In the past few decades, technology has taken over the way we live our lives. From the books that we read to news we receive, the way we consume media has been changed forever. But recently, there’s been a movement to return to the analogue. Whether it’s vinyl records, DVDs, or even newspapers - the demand for physical media is growing. Creators and storytellers across the nation are meeting that growing need by making new and interesting physical content of their own. Christopher Payne is doing just that with his publication Fine Print. Christopher grew up in a small town in California named Cherry Valley near the Mojave Desert. While living there, he honed his skills as an artist, producing art that focuses on what he describes as, “nature viewed through a distorted lens”. After finding artistic success in exhibits, on magazine covers, and having artworks placed in movies and TV shows - and after living in LA and Austin - a new job search led Christopher to Baton Rouge four years ago. Now he leads his Fine Print team across the nation from here in the capital city. It goes without saying that the news has had one foot out the door of the physical medium for years now. This has caused magazines, newspapers and newsletters to have to make moves to stay alive. One of the main things you’ll see them doing is establishing a strong internet presence to make sure their readers can get their news anywhere and everywhere. Ivory Payne is no stranger to this evolution. Ivory is a graphic artist and the publisher of the Baton Rouge Weekly Press, a paper that started life 47 years ago and today has a significant internet presence - though Ivory still prints physical issues for those traditionalists who want it. Ivory says the paper has a circulation of around 60,000, which, per capita, makes it one of the most well-read local papers in the country. Ivory was born and raised here in Baton Rouge but spent much of his working career in Ohio. He came back home in 2016. Back here he wears many hats, including President of the Louisiana Black Publishers and Media Association, assistant pastor at the Greater New Birth Full Gospel Fellowship, and publisher of a bi-annual coffee table book about African American leaders who make a positive impact in their communities, called Leaders Publications. It’s clear to see that these two Paynes don’t just share the same name, they’re two sides of the same coin. On the heads side of the Payne coin, Ivory is keeping the public informed through one publication and highlighting innovators with another. On the tails side, Christopher is using his skills and talent to lift up others' work as well. Ivory and Christopher are both very passionate about what they do and that’s important: If it weren’t for organizations like theirs, physical mediums would surely phase out of existence. Oscar Tickle sits in for Stephanie Riegel on this episode of Out to Lunch, recorded live over lunch at Mansurs on the Boulevard. At around 1 a.m. on the morning of November 15, 1994, Captain Prentice "Skip" Strong III woke to a distress call. Skip was the new captain of an oil tanker called the Cherry Valley. He and his crew had been making their way up the coast of Florida that evening when a tropical storm had descended. It had been a rough night of 15 foot waves and 50 mile per hour winds. The distress call was coming from a tugboat whose engines were failing in the storm. Now adrift, the tugboat was on a dangerous collision course with the shore. The only ship close enough to mount a rescue was the Cherry Valley. Skip faced a difficult decision. A fully loaded, 688-foot oil tanker is hardly anyone's first choice of a rescue vessel. It is as maneuverable as a school bus on ice. And the Cherry Valley was carrying ten million gallons of heavy fuel oil. A rescue attempt would put them in dangerously shallow water. One wrong move, and they would have an ecological disaster on the order of the Exxon Valdez. What happened next that night would be dissected and debated for years to come. The actions of Skip and his crew would lead to a surprising discovery, a record-setting lawsuit, and one of the strangest legal battles in maritime history. At the center of it all, an impossible question: How do you put a price tag on doing the right thing?Help support Planet Money and get bonus episodes by subscribing to Planet Money+ in Apple Podcasts or at plus.npr.org/planetmoney.

Welcome to Mysteries to Die For and this Toe Tag.I am TG Wolff and am here with Jack, my piano player and producer. This is normally a podcast where we combine storytelling with original music to put you at the heart of mystery, murder, and mayhem. Today is a bonus episode we call a Toe Tag. It is the first chapter from a fresh release in the mystery, crime, and thriller genre.Today's featured release is Echo from a Bayou by J Luke Bennecke Echo from a Bayou was released from Jaytech Publishing and is promoted by Partners In Crime Tours and is available from AMAZON LINK and other book retailers.About J Luke Benneckehttps://www.jlukebennecke.com/J. Luke Bennecke, a master civil engineer, became an award-winning author, philanthropist, and daredevil pilot amidst the concrete jungles of Southern California. While constructing bridges and highways, Bennecke secretly plotted high-octane thrillers that became instant bestsellers. But his adventures didn't end there. As a licensed real estate broker and general contractor, he built homes with the precision of a ninja, all while jetting off to exotic destinations, voiceover acting, and giving back to the community via annual high school scholarships. Living in the shadows of Cherry Valley, CA, Bennecke's next daring escapade is always just around the corner.TG Wolff ReviewEcho from a Bayou is a paranormal suspense. John Bastian went head-first into a tree. He woke from a coma and, yeah, he could see dead people. Even weirder, John woke with memories of a war he never fought in, a career he never had, and a wife he never kissed. Flashes hinted at map leading to treasure and an ax leading to death of the man who John was…Jack Bachman. Now John is on the hunt for the treasure, his murderer, and the woman he left behind.Bottom line: Echo from a Bayou is for you if you like your suspense steeped in the supernatural, paced to draw out the good stuff and finishing with one of the best, eerie endings you've ever seen.Strengths of the story. From the start, the premise of the story grabs you. This isn't a typical time travel type of story but a well-reasoned reincarnation story. This not only is a unique spin on the supernatural genre but eliminates all the problems of logic stability that is inherent in time travel. The characters are also a winner. John / Jack is an ordinary man, put in extraordinary circumstances. He doesn't flip a switch and go into hero mode but his slowly driven there by memories and urges his rational mind has to justify. The best friend, Kevin, is an excellent comic relief. The bad guy, Scott, is complex. Just because he's evil doesn't mean he's always an asshole. The pacing matches the expectation set with being suspense. Certainly, some scene hit the thrill level, but, overall, this is one you sit back and enjoy…until you have to read faster because the shit is hitting the fan.Where the story fell short of ideal: Having finished this book several days ago and revisited the plot, this is a really solid suspense. There is very little to pick on here. If you like thriller-like pacing, you may find this a bit slow, but again, this is true to the suspense genre. While I totally loved the end, I did have one question for the author on why/how it happened that way. Regardless of his answer, this is at the top of my list for cool ways to finish a book.

This is the second part of a two part interview with Captain Skip Strong and Twain Braden of: In Peril: A Daring Decision, a Captain's Resolve, and the Salvage that Made History When Skip Strong, the thirty-two-year-old Captain of the 688-foot oil tanker Cherry Valley received the call, all he knew was that an ocean going tug with five men aboard was in distress off Florida's east coast. Caught in an unusually powerful storm, the tug's engines failed, and as the winds gusted to more than sixty miles per hour and the sea whipped into a frenzy, the tug--and the barge it was towing-- were in danger of being swept ashore. Captain Strong also knew that he would follow the age-old tradition of sea rescue. Coming to the aid of the crew, the tug, and its cargo, he would have to maneuver his ship--laden with 10 million gallons of oil-- in extremely hazardous conditions. One mistake and Strong would be responsible for an ecological disaster on Florida's beaches equal to that of the Exxon Valdez. What Captain Strong didn't know was that the tug was carrying a 150-foot aluminum fuel cell worth upwards of $50 million. And that in the instant he decided to rescue the tug and its crew, he was opening the door on a dramatic and tense legal struggle that would pit him against the United States Government for salvage rights. What began as a path traveled by Native Americans became a plank road for European settlers and now is suburban Guilderland's major thoroughfare — Route 20.Route 20 seemed long to Bryan Farr when he was kid, traveling with his family every summer from the Fingers Lakes where they lived to the Darien Lake, an amusement park near Buffalo. But, as a young man, he embraced the entire length of the historic highway, driving through 12 states from Boston, Massachusetts to Newport, Oregon in two weeks: 3,365 miles from coast to coast, America's longest highway. Farr describes it as a once-in-a-lifetime trip on this week's podcast.Farr, a meteorologist with a penchant for photography, took pictures along the way and planned to put together a book. He wrote to the towns he had traveled through and asked them to write three things about the town. He was sent three-page emails in return. As his interest in the history of the route burgeoned, Farr founded the Historic U.S. Route 20 Association, a labor of love.Farr will be speaking, through Zoom, to the Guilderland Historical Society at 7 p.m. on Nov. 18. The public is invited to the free event. Details on how to join the meeting are posted at www.guilderlandhistoricalsociety.org.Farr knows the history of the route intimately. The stretch between Albany and Buffalo, he says, almost became defunct in the 1850s because the Erie Canal was so popular. As automobiles started replacing horse-drawn conveyances in the early 20th Century, Farr says, “Good roads were hard to find.” In 1921, the Federal Highway Act allocated funds to states; each was to pick their best roads.Leaders met regionally and then, in 1925, Farr said, all the regions met to connect the dots. The act laid the groundwork for a national highway system. That's when the numbering system for highways was developed, with the lowest numbers for roads running north and east and the highest for roads going south and west. Even numbers were for east-to-west roads; odd numbers for north-to-south roads. A zero at the end of a route, as in Route 20, means it's a cross-country highway.Such a numbering system was useful, Farr notes, before the age of GPS when travelers had to find their own way.Once the roads were numbered, roadside motels and cabins popped up, Farr said, noting motorists could travel only 100 or 150 miles a day and would stop along the way at the mom-and-pop businesses, often with a shop, restaurant, and gas station — and sometimes a kitschy attraction.“Roadside architecture really started to bloom,” said Farr, as a landlocked lighthouse or a giant teapot beckoned to travelers.By the 1950s and '60s, traffic became so intense that, in some places, it could be backed up for a mile or more. Once superhighways, like New York's Thruway, were built, some of the towns along the old Route 20 dried up almost overnight, said Farr.Cherry Valley, west of Guilderland, became a ghost town, Farr said, describing the Thruway as “the nail in the coffin.”One of his association's goals is to highlight small towns so visitors return there. Recently, Iowa gave Route 20 an historic designation, which took several years to secure. There are now 250 signs across Iowa to help travelers follow the historic Route 20 there.Farr and his association were following a similar approach in New York State. Both the Guilderland Public Library and Gade Farm in town posted signs, noting they stand along Route 20. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Así nació “Burn My Bridges”. Escuchar audio

As head of innovation and marketing, Suzanne seeks to be the connection between Red Shed and the brewing industry, working with her father Jack and brewers on interesting flavors and trends that use locally sourced New York hops and grains, and working with her husband David and tap room managers to understand the guests and clientele served to ensure that Red Shed remains connected with the community. After graduating from the University in Arizona with a degree in Business Management, Suzanne worked at UCLA as Marketing, Media and Public Relations Manager. She moved to Pittsburgh, PA in 2002 and spent 14 years in the retail food industry working in food marketing, customer relationship marketing and finally found her calling being the head of customer experience for the chain of grocery, convenience and pharmacy locations. After getting married, having kids, and being convinced by her father Jack to bring her hospitality and food expertise to Cherry Valley, NY, Suzanne and the family took a leap of faith and joined the family business Red Shed Brewery in 2017. Suzanne splits her time developing patient experience initiatives at Bassett Healthcare, teaching yoga and the brewery. Living up to the tagline of Local, Handcrafted, Fresh is Suzanne’s mission, and she wants to create that experience for her guests with each beer, flavor, experience and visit to the brewery. On this episode of Destination on the Left, I talk with Suzanne Olson of Red Shed Brewery about the customer experience and how to operate a business with a person-first mindset. What You Will Learn in This Episode: What leaders in large companies can learn about running small businesses and what that transition taught Suzanne How a person-first approach benefited Suzanne’s brewery and what that philosophy looks like in practice Using feedback to ensure your company is always growing and improving Handling the “slow season” and getting creative with your destination The effects of co-opetition and collaboration on Suzanne’s brewery and how to forge meaningful partnerships What targeted marketing can do to help diversify your audiences or explore your niche Putting the Customer First Suzanne Olson is a strategic and innovative customer experience and marketing professional with 16 years of progressive experience and related education. She spent 14 years at Giant Eagle, a New England grocery chain, directing customer service and marketing strategies. She then transitioned from the large grocery chain to a small brewery, Red Shed, in upstate New York. I was so happy to talk to her and get a glimpse into this exciting industry! Suzanne’s background means she has a special perspective on serving customers and giving them experiences to remember. Her switch from a company with 37,000 employees to a small brewery of 14 people gave her insight on operations, service, and training. She discovered how relevant company culture is to a smaller organization and resolved to put customers and people first. Small businesses in the travel industry face unique challenges that large corporations don’t otherwise know about. It’s very easy to neglect things like training when running an in-season destination for seven days a week. Suzanne’s person-first approach is a great fix for this and other problems Red Shed has dealt with. Her company brews and works for the customer. As a result, the company has adapted to local tourism by implementing a beer garden, yard games, giant Jenga, tractor tires, and a family-friendly menu. The family focus carved out a niche for Red Shed that appeals to a broad range of customers who just want to relax. Craft Brew Collaboration Suzanne’s creative “customer-first” practices have put Red Shed ahead of the game. To help her along the way, Suzanne and her company have consistently asked for feedback to ensure they’re always improving and recreating their winning formula. This level of creativity and flexibility is extremely helpful for when Suzanne’s business faces its inevitable challenge: the slow season. To shake things up, Red Shed “invents events,” as Suzanne puts it. Events such as a prom party and other fun festivities keep people interested, while new beers keep them coming back for more. Other features, like an Oktoberfest party with a variety of attractions, continue to draw new and diverse audiences. Targeted marketing helps Suzanne build a vision for Red Shed and the events and ideas she wants to try out. In the large market that is the brewery business, Suzanne has discovered the magic of collaboration. Red Shed’s one-of-a-kind brews are a great way for the brewery to partner and promote local farms and spotlight their ingredients. Suzanne’s collaboration extends to the Destination Marketing Corporation of Otsego County, where she serves on the board. Suzanne regularly offers help to the DMCOC while informing them of Red Shed’s local events and plans. She reinforces transparency as a valuable trait for any destination or company to have. By staying transparent, partners like local restaurants trust Red Shed and work with them to the benefit of both companies. Do you guys miss any of your local favorite spots that have either shuttered or changed from when you last saw it? In Episode 6 of the Atypical Asians, the guys do a small trip down memory lane and reminisce about food locations in their hometown that, while not Michelin award-winning, are long-running local favorites for dates & quick eats. Places such as the recently shuttered Douglaston’s Movieworld or Burger King, as well as Whitestone’s Christina’s and Cherry Valley, two neighborhood delis across the street each other known as a beacon of light for late night party hungry party goers. The guys also tackle “caring for mental health”; why it’s important to do so next to your own physical well-being, and ultimately why we need to destigmatize the idea of seeking help from a therapist. Opening up about some of their newfound ventures by stepping outside of their comfort zones, be it working out in a new gym, meeting new people, or even trying new experiences such as salsa dancing, the guys talk about how these experiences not only contribute to caring for your own well-being but how these new experiences help you learn to be your own hero.

1001 Heroes, Legends, Histories & Mysteries podcast rips the cover off the politically correct version of the American Indian fighting only to protect his lands from white encroachment., as we look into the unholy alliance between the Iroquois nation and the British power brokers trying to stamp out American independence during the American Revolution between 1775 and 1783.  Part one begins with Lord Chatham's now famous speech to the House of Commons in 1777 expressing his shock and sadness that the once honorable British army was using and encouraging Indian atrocities- including scalping and cannibalism-against the colonists- and he, correctly assessing the outcome early in this war, was asking for a peace before it was too late, He states that England had no chance of winning that war.  Also discussed in part one- Sir William Johnson and his successor, white and Indian problems and mistakes, two captive accounts, one from Ft. Niagara, raids and skirmishes in 1777-78, setting the stage for part two with the Massacre at Wyoming (Pennsylvania), the Massacre at Cherry Valley, and the atrocities of the Tories and Indians across the frontier.  ALL NEW LINKS AUGUST 2018 SUPPORT OUR SHOW MONTHLY AT PATREON Become an Assistant Producer at 1001 Stories Network ( a great resume enhancement) and support us at Patreon today! John chats with Lydia Dobyns, president and CEO of New Tech Network, which has about 200 K-12 schools in 28 states, and Matthew Swenson, assistant principal at Cross County (New Tech) High School in Cherry Valley, Arkansas. New Tech Network’s mission to reimagine schools using four basic pillars that apply in their two models, one for elementary, and for the secondary level: culture that empowers students; project-based learning; embedded use of technology, and schoolwide learning outcomes, both academic and non-academic. Swenson works in a rural town (population 650) in the Mississippi delta, with about 600 students in the district, which was on a state low-performing list. His students, Swenson says, need 21st Century skills, which New Tech provides. The New Tech model is meant to be applied by the community, using virtual and on-site experience, for the specific economic and other needs of the local community, notes Dobyns. In Cherry Valley, the school is the hub of the community. New Tech implements its program by building deeper understanding of the challenges faced by teachers, administrators, parents, local business leaders, in terms of culture issues. For example, the school and the network established a Virtual Internship, in which the student and a professional “build something together.” Graduating students now have a plan for what they’ll be doing after high school, Swenson notes.
