Frugality is an endearing element of saving money and living the good life. But interestingly, the recent discourse in personal finance circles has seemingly shifted to embrace spending over saving. Dylan Magaster In person meeting in Cape Verde part 2 I met in person Dylan Magaster in Cape Verde. About half way thorough the interview we both realized that we had talked before in 2020 Below are the show notes for that interview!...... ------------------ I received this email from Dylan, so how could I resist the interview invitation! Hello, My name is Dylan Magaster and I am the creator of the successful YouTube channel FLORB with 600k subscribers and over 100M views (www.youtube.com/dylanmagaster). I believe if you were to bring me as a guest to your podcast we could create an episode that would provide a lot of value and entertainment to your listeners. I started a career in YouTube at the age of 21 years old with a backpack and $1,000. After 6 months in South America I converted a van in order to begin my travels in North America. About 2 years ago I moved to the Mediterranean and bought a sailboat with only 7 days of sailing experience. I have since sailed from Spain to Croatia, all the way into the Black Sea and all the way down to Tunisia, where I am currently living aboard on my 1939 Morgan 382 sailing boat, The Arianrhod, until the borders reopen. My life choices and professional journey have been called anything from risky to unconventional but FLORB is now a full-fledged, reputable film production company based in Los Angeles, California. I look forward to hearing from you. Cheers! Dylan Dylan Magaster flew to South America at the age of 21 with only $1,000 in the bank and his camera gear. He backpacked for 6 months, converted a van, and began creating influential short documentaries showcasing Alternative Living. After nearly two years in a van, Dylan decided to move to the Mediterranean in pursuit of adventure. With only 7 days of sailing experience, he bought a 1979 Morgan 382 sailing boat and has since been living aboard The Arianrhod. Currently, he has sailed over 6,000 nautical miles to 3 different continents. He has traveled to 27 countries thus far while sharing countless inspiring stories of Alternative Living. Dylan's main passions are Adventure, Storytelling, and Sustainable Living. Now, he is the CEO of FLORB, a successful film production company based in Los Angeles, California, USA. Best US Cities for Tiny House LivingSubscribe: https://thingsyoushouldknow.supercast.techFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/879254746173653The ongoing fascination with tiny homes hasn't lost momentum, and more people might decide to build tiny in the not-too-distant future. Ordinances that prevent accessory dwelling, and a lack of builders focusing on small living spaces are two significant barriers to growing our tiny house nation, but more and more places are starting to welcome home owners who want to build under 600 square-feet.Where are the best places to go tiny? To identify states that don't micro-manage miniature home building, we studied resources, ordinances, and builders in all 50 states. Based on an unweighted system awarding points for opportunities to easily live tiny, the top five states where going tiny is a bit easier than the rest are California, Oregon, Texas, North Carolina and Florida.A tiny house community is a village where tiny house dwellers live alongside each other in areas designed for small-living. If you want to bypass the often challenging process of financing a tiny house, finding raw or undeveloped land for sale where you can legally put your tiny house, or searching for a tiny house for sale with land, living in a tiny house community is often a great and more affordable option. Sometimes these communities function like RV parks. You basically pay to park your tiny home on wheels on a lot with hookup utilities. Other tiny house communities offer tiny homes for sale or rent, as well as plots of land where you can build your own tiny home. In fact, renting a tiny home in one of these communities short-term is a good idea for those who aren't sure about buying or building their own tiny home yet. Why not try it out before you commit? Below we outline some of the best tiny house communities around the US, with particular focus on Colorado, Florida, and California — states that are particularly tiny-house-friendly.Buzzsprout - Let's get your podcast launched! E121: After working with Elizabeth as a client managing her podcast and creating original music for her I had to have her on the show to share some of the content I had been hearing. Elizabeth is a love coach and works with love, sex, and relationships on the west coast. One thing I've seen in our community here is the friction that pops up with peoples relationships as they start pursuing an alternative model of living and career path. Entrepreneurs as couples together both starting something up or one entrepreneur and one partner with a more standard living practice both have their own challenges. I wanted to share some of her wisdom so we can all focus on the things that truly matter while we pursue our purpose and our creative successfully. We speak through empathy and entitlement, human brain justification and problem seeking. Ownership and managing expectations inside the relationship. Elizabeth has created a six figure coaching business in Seattle helping people with what she loves, so she's here to help in business and in life as well. In This Episode We Cover Love, sex, and relationships Relationship with time and money Compassion and empathy for yourself and others Deeper levels of love that we aren't aware of Empathy Humans can justify anything, we are programmed to Taking responsibility for your own actions and understanding why Managing a relationship as an entrepreneur Managing a relationship as two entrepreneurs Setting aside sacred time for the things you really love Keeping new relationship energy Agreements with your partner Over communicate! E73: In today’s episode Dave speaks with long time friends Ethan and Katelynn Hunter of Hunters Van Life. For awhile now I’ve wanted to interview some van life or other “alternative life” people out there to get perspective on the why behind it. I believe the why is the same why many of us have just in a different approach at achieving a life we want to live all the time being creative and having time to create. We speak about the process, working for what you want to have happen. Control on life and perspective of time. Perception of the life and time we want verses what we actually have to do and what is not real. Lots of deep conversation sprinkled with some pre-game wine and jokes between friends. Lots to think about here but not too deep to go for a run and hang with us. In This Episode We Cover Seeing where your money is going Wanting less Having less What do you need, what do you care about? What is for you? What other ways can you live? Minimum expenses Creating a schedule When you want you can make it happen Things have to suck sometimes Time when your in it vs when you look back Controlling time There are other ways to live Quotes “We just worked two weeks, now we are all set for the next 3 months.” - Ethan Hunter “ You don’t have to do the 9 to 5, you don’t have to buy the house with the picket fence and fill it up with things. There are other ways to live. People think this is what we are supposed to be doing and if you aren’t feeling like thats meant for you or that brings you true joy then there are other ways.” - Katelynn Hunter “When there’s something that you really want you just do it, you make it work. If there’s something you really want I truly believe you just make it happen.” - Katelynn Hunter “I need that game to play, I need the other game to play, and I know that.” - Host Dave Swillum “When your in your 30’s or 40’s looking back 6 months feels like nothing. When your in 6 months, 6 months feels like 10 years and your like this is awful, how am I still doing this?!?!” - Host Dave Swillum Ethan & Katelynn Website & Links Website www.thehuntersvanlife.com Insta @thehuntersvanlife Ethan & Katelynn’s Noted Resources & Artists Eamon & Bec www.eamonandbec.com Trent & Allie www.trentandallie.com Waking Up From Work Podcast Links Website www.wakingupfromwork.com Instagram/Twitter/Tik Tok @davewakeup Merch To Support Us! https://wakeup.itemorder.com/sale?fbclid=IwAR30nyVXdpFaax0mN0CRcC_mVjNzafbMo0spds82eoG-GMo01HG6Uq0dvzw Patreon (If you want to support the show check out our sweet offers for you) https://www.patreon.com/wakingupfromwork Facebook Community to connect to creatives https://www.facebook.com/groups/wakingupfromwork/about/ Email wakeupfromworkpodcast@gmail.com Youtube Channel https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCJeddF25VuWn8Eg3Fhy13fQ?view_as=subscriber For audio advice and more in depth music content from Dave www.crawlspaceaudio.com Dave’s Indie Rock Band Broadwing www.broadwingband.bandcamp.com
E66: What’s Your American Dream? Alternative Living Starter Home W/ Dave Swillum What is your American Dream? For many it feels like your first home but for even more it is the way they want to live their life in every aspect. In today’s time it isn’t that it is less enjoyable to own a home, it’s just that it can be challenging to own a traditional first home and NOT go down the path of working a 9 - 5 to keep up with the overhead. Many bail from their dream because their overhead keeps an uphill battle going forward and doesn’t provide the cover fire to get started. I want to talk about what your true goal is, if it is to buy a single family home and you like your job then that’s great! Super obtainable. But if your goal is more than that in this episode I talk on ways to live alternatively or change the perception of what your “starter” home looks like to come up with ways to minimize overhead, invest in assets that generate income or give yourself the cover fire to open a business or focus on creative. This is from hearing conversations of friends buying after wanting to talk to myself 6 years ago about something no one told me. What is your dream and what are you doing about it? Do they align with getting it done or is it a short term win that could look like something else to become a catalyst toward your goal? In This Episode We Cover What is your American Dream? What is the goal and what’s the actual goal? Buying your first home Killing your overhead Alternative living and housing What are you trying to do? What does that look like every day? Reverse engineer Don’t build a mountain to climb Quotes “ My priority for me is my way of life and how long do I get to have it?” - Host Dave Swillum “ Don’t get distracted because it feels like the goal and it feels good for the mean time for jeopardizing something that could be a long term goal for you.” - Host Dave Swillum “ The businesses that have the most leverage and the least overhead that they have to battle are the most likely to succeed for the longest, because you have time to react appropriately and not act through fear.” - Host Dave Swillum Waking Up From Work Podcast Links Website www.wakingupfromwork.com Patreon (If you want to support the show check out our sweet offers for you) https://www.patreon.com/wakingupfromwork Instagram/Twitter/Tik Tok @davewakeup Facebook Community to connect to creatives https://www.facebook.com/groups/wakingupfromwork/about/ Email wakeupfromworkpodcast@gmail.com Youtube Channel https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCJeddF25VuWn8Eg3Fhy13fQ?view_as=subscriber For audio advice and more in depth music content from Dave www.crawlspaceaudio.com Dave’s Indie Rock Band Broadwing www.broadwingband.bandcamp.com

I think that society has groomed us to believe that once we "grow up" we need to live a certain way. Whether that is holding down a regular 9-5 or buying a home, we're taught that adventure is something we should 'get out of the way' when we're younger. I wanted to interview Tara Wear because she met a guy online by answering an ad, flew to Florida to meet him and sailed the Mediterranean with him for the next two years! Now, that is not what i'm saying we should all do - but what adventures have you put off that you've been dreaming about? It's never too late to travel the world, to learn that new skill, to follow whatever your heart has been whispering to you. Tara has traveled to 35+ countries living from a backpack, in a camper-van and, most recently, traveling via a sailboat. In this episode, we chat about what it's like to live in a van as a solo female and the mishaps and adventures that happened along the way while sailing from Barcelona to Athens. I hope that she inspires you to follow your heart as much as she inspires me to follow mine! Emma and I have a an awesome chat this week, discussing the motivations behind the alternative practice of dumpster diving. With enormous corporations disposing of immense amount of edible and packaged food products, we are seeing more and more, the need to manage our waste as a society. As members in that society, we can start to take things into our own hands by voting with our dollars, and minimizing the waste on the ground (or dumpster in this case). Join us this week as we explore the wacky and zany adventures of dumpster diving and learn how this simple step can really serve us and the greater community!thanks for listening!SamIf you want to support the show, check out my go fund me at www.gofundme.com/divedeepwithsamSupport the show (http://paypal.me/divedeepwithsam)

What kind of life do you really want to lead? Does consumption and stuff dictate your life more than you’d like? It is so important to examine your own life to discover the small changes you can make right now to give you more freedom to do the things that truly matter most to you. For this interview, we sat down with Chris and Cristi from Life Opted Out to talk about how and why they chose to leave a life they loved in NYC for a much simpler, more affordable life traveling the country in their van. They share that so many of the lessons they’ve learned are not specific to life on the road, and can be applied to anyone looking for more purpose and fulfillment. During this episode we both enjoyed a Nothing Left to Give by Orpheus Brewing which you can find on Untappd. A big thanks to Jimmy for donating these beers to the show! ‘Grow, feed, educate’ is Emma and Tom Lane’s motto for their beloved business, The Farm in Byron Bay. The ethos underpins all they do, and stems from their deep belief that firsthand experience of seeing how food is grown and produced makes eating so much more pleasurable - and equips us to make better food decisions for our health and the health of our planet. The family lived on Sydney’s Darling Harbour, where Tom led his family’s business, the fashion label Oroton, and Emma worked in advertising. But when they discovered their three-year-old daughter in their veggie patch, devouring green beans she’d grown herself, they wanted a healthier life for their young family. The seed of an idea was born to launch a working farm, offering this same food connection for other families.“People did think we were crazy,” Tom says. This is what happened next.Spoiler alert: it's all kinds of incredible.
In many homes worldwide, David Holmgren is a beloved name. As the co-creator of the global permaculture movement, his work has touched millions of lives, and can be seen etched into the gardens of inner city projects to community co-operatives to large-scale farms. The term permaculture was created back in the mid-1970s by David and university professor Bill Mollison, and is a combination of the terms ‘permanent’ and ‘agriculture’ to create a symbolic union. Its 12 principles are based around three pillars - care of the earth, care of people and return of surplus - and over the last forty years it has evolved into an organic, adaptive movement to expand alongside modern times.Behind the movement, David is not only promoting a sustainable lifestyle, but a powerful alternative life away from dependent consumerism. As such, the principles of permaculture transcend the humble garden to see homes flourish through non-monetary economies, communities blossom through connection and to celebrate a life handmade through the imperfect art of creation.Kayla had the pleasure of interviewing David at his home of Melliodora in Central Victoria, one of the best documented and well known permaculture demonstration sites worldwide. In this episode you'll learn David's tips for the first place to start when greening your home, and the easy ways that you can introduce permaculture into your life.

In her 20s she traveled around the country working seasonal jobs and then landed in the Grass Valley area of California. After settling and living in a small studio apartment, she realized while she was mostly happy, there was also a piece of her that felt a little dead inside. She listened to that piece and started a new adventure of living in tents, which taught her a lot about herself. The Gems have been working with Carrie and are talking to her before she takes her next leap -- returning to a traveling gypsy lifestyle. This time with her male counterpart. Ginger and Carrie talk about being in relationships with men older than them (12 and 18 year differences) and how to hold a secure space when you are each on very different inner journeys. This episode touches on fear, fighting programming and how to let your guard down after being a warrior for so long. Update: This podcast was recorded in November 2016. Carrie is on the road and doing well! The above photo is from her current travels in December 2016.
