Jianggan Li, Founder & CEO of Momentum Works, and Jeremy Au discussed: 1. Singles' Day 11/11 eCommerce: Jianggan shared his recent immersion trip to Hangzhou, where he observed China's vibrant e-commerce and live commerce sectors. With Singles' Day on November 11 approaching, he noted how this biggest shopping holiday in China has influenced shopping behaviors across Southeast Asia. Major platforms like Lazada and Shopee now promote Singles' Day regionally and have inspired monthly events like 10.10 and 9.9 sales, reflecting how Chinese shopping culture has permeated the region's markets. These frequent sales resonate with local consumers, and the rise of “payday promotions” as SEA brands continually invent new reasons to engage consumers between big sale events. This trend has raised demand for popular Chinese products, which occasionally leads to counterfeit goods, such as longjing "dragon well" tea.. He also highlights a visit to a logistics center in China, where human workers sort 3.5 million parcels daily, which rise to 8 million at peak periods, significantly contrasting Southeast Asia's relatively lower volume. 2. Trump vs. BRICS & Exporters: Reflecting on the US-China trade war, they outlined how supply chain shifts began during the 2016 Trump administration when tariffs on Chinese exports pushed some manufacturers to relocate to Vietnam and Cambodia. Although challenging, this diversification trend was essential for reducing tariff exposure and mitigating political risk. Chinese founders had to overcome frauds and scams in these frontier markets. The recent BRICS summit, with Southeast Asian nations like Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, and Thailand joining as partners, highlights a shift toward a multi-polar economic strategy. A handshake between Xi Jinping and India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the summit indicated efforts to ease border tensions while China maintained its role as India's largest trading partner. 3. Singapore Suzhou Industrial Parks & Hangzhou: They examined the role of regional industrial parks, with a focus on the Suzhou Industrial Park, a collaboration with Singapore that set a model for attracting FDI and spurred local development. Both Jiangsu (Suzhou) and Zhejiang (Hangzhou) provinces now lead China's wealthiest regions, each with a GDP per capita of about $20,000, double the national average. Suzhou's FDI-driven approach contrasts with Zhejiang's privatized clusters, where private entrepreneurs, such as those in Yiwu, naturally formed their own industries. This economic contrast highlights how both regions have fostered complementary ecosystems, with distinct founder “vibes” reflecting diverse business cultures. Jeremy and Jianggan also discussed why China is holding off on a fiscal stimulus till America's election results, how Singaporean brands are entering America's “affordable luxury” niches which align with America's higher GDP per capita, and the expansion of Chinese brands like Luckin Coffee and Chagee into the US market. === Jianggan Li is the Founder & CEO of Momentum Works, a Singapore-headquartered venture outfit. Prior to founding Momentum Works, he co-founded Easy Taxi in Asia, and served as Managing Director of Foodpanda. He is also the co-author of the book Seeing the Unseen: Behind Chinese Tech Giants' Global Venturing. He holds an MBA from INSEAD and a degree in Computer Engineering from Nanyang Technological University. Apart from English and his native Mandarin, he is also fluent in French and conversational in Cantonese & Spanish. === Watch, listen or read the full insight at www.bravesea.com/blog/ trump-vs-brics-exporters Nonton, dengar atau baca wawasan lengkapnya di www.bravesea.com/blog/ trump-vs-brics-exporters

Can local sparkling drink brand Supergulp thrive in the crowded and competitive beverage market? In this episode of Open For Business, we dive into Julian Koh's journey from e-commerce and food tech roles at companies like Honestbee and Foodpanda to founding Supergulp — a Malaysian sparkling prebiotic drink brand. As Julian shared with Vulcan Post, the idea for Supergulp began with a simple supermarket visit, where he came across Western sparkling prebiotic drinks. Impressed by their taste and low sugar content, he wondered why there wasn't a similar option tailored for local tastes. That moment planted the seed for what would become Supergulp. With no prior F&B experience, Julian drew on his background in food tech and e-commerce to create a healthier alternative for Malaysia's bustling beverage market, blending inspiration from Western brands with a focus on local preferences.Julian shares the challenges of launching a consumer brand, strategies to stand out in the “better-for-you” drink market, and Supergulp's ambitious growth plans. Join us as we explore the early hurdles, the unique product development journey, and the future Julian envisions for Supergulp in Malaysia and beyond.
Earlier in September, Meituan went live in Saudi Arabia under its global brand, Keeta. This comes more than a year after Meituan entered its first overseas market, Hong Kong, where it quickly overtook established players like Foodpanda, becoming the market leader in order volume due to aggressive promotions and a focus on low Average Order Value (AOV) meals. Now, Meituan is entering Saudi Arabia, a promising market for food delivery but one that presents unique cultural and operational dynamics for Meituan compared to its previous markets. And unlike many Chinese tech companies going global, Meituan faces the challenge of being an operationally heavy business. Will Tony Qiu, Head of International Business at Meituan and former lead of DiDi's expansion in Latin America, be able to navigate these complexities? Agung Saputra, CEO & Founder of Surplus Indonesia, and Jeremy Au talked about three main themes: 1. Indonesia Pollution Crisis: Agung flagged that Indonesia is one the top 3 polluters in the world: #2 plastic polluter, #2 food wastage and #1 most air polluted city (Jakarta). He highlighted the lack of regulations and public awareness as major barriers to effective waste management for the country's severe environmental challenges. Indonesia's reliance on “ticking time bomb” landfills (rather than incineration or recycling) poses significant safety hazards, e.g. a landfill explosion in Bandung led to fatalities. Deforestation for urban development has led to significant biodiversity loss, e.g. the new capital city of Nusantara in Borneo. He underscored the need for comprehensive governmental action and community involvement to improve environmental practices. 2. 48 Million Tons of Food Waste: Agung addressed the rapidly-rising problem of food waste, driven by its large population, increasing affluence and cultural attitudes (e.g. viewing an empty plate at the end of the meal as impolite). Harvard research shows that 20M people (8%) in Indonesia are unable to meet their nutritional needs every year, and stunting affects one-third of children under five years old. However, 48 million tons of food worth $39B USD (~5% of Indonesia's GDP) is lost annually, which is equivalent to 170kg of food waste per person. Not only would redirecting edible food to food banks support people experiencing hunger and chronic malnutrition, but it would also help reduce greenhouse gas emissions produced from food ending up in the landfill. He warns that food waste will continue to increase as Indonesia gets larger and richer unless effective interventions are implemented. 3. Surplus Marketplace App: Agung described how Surplus Indonesia operates as a marketplace for surplus food, connecting consumers with discounted food items that would otherwise go to waste. The platform works similarly to Foodpanda, allowing users to find and purchase surplus food from local businesses via an app. Surplus Indonesia has grown significantly, reporting a threefold increase in revenue in 2023, which indicates a rising demand for sustainable practices. He also discussed the company's approach to ensuring food safety and quality, including a two-strikes policy for vendors who fail to meet standards. He highlighted that the primary customers are younger Indonesians, who are more environmentally conscious and willing to support sustainable businesses. He explained that the demographic shift is reflected in the increasing number of sustainability startups in the country, from just a few in 2019 to nearly a hundred by 2024. Jeremy and Agung also talked about managing different types of waste and recycling streams, growth in sustainability-driven sectors, and the increasing involvement of young Indonesians in environmental issues. Valerie Vu, Founding Partner of Ansible Ventures, and Jeremy Au talked about three main themes: 1. China Tourism & Taylor Swift: Valerie shared the significant impact of Lunar New Year celebrations on Vietnam's work culture and economy, highlighting the extended holiday period shared with its neighbors like China and Singapore. She explored the potential economic benefits of reviving Chinese tourist numbers to pre-COVID levels, considering China's tourists historically accounted for a third of foreign visitors to Vietnam. They also discussed Taylor Swift's Singapore concert as a case study in tourism marketing. 2. Food Delivery Industry Economics: Jeremy and Valerie discussed the inherent challenges of the food delivery industry, characterized by low margins and, in many cases, negative profitability. They mentioned the failed negotiation between Foodpanda (under Delivery Hero) and Grab, highlighting the tough economic realities of the sector. Valerie also expressed her preference for ShopeeFood over Grab due to the smaller, local merchants, and "mom-and-pop" restaurants that the platform partners with. She also touched on the broader market dynamics, including the exit of other players like Bé Minh, the third-largest food delivery service, which left the Vietnamese market to focus on its primary market in South Korea. 3. Air Quality Pollution vs. Industrial Growth: Jeremy and Valerie talked about Vietnam's economic benefits from its industrial sector, with the smartphone export growth of 16% year-on-year in January 2024. The economic boon comes at the cost of environmental degradation, with both Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City respectively placing 3rd and 10th on alarming air quality index rankings. They explored potential strategies for addressing air quality such as temporarily halting industrial activities which China did around the 2008 Olympics to improve its air quality. They discussed the lack of substantial policy measures from the Vietnamese government to combat the air pollution problem partly due to the government's prioritization of economic growth through manufacturing, which is a key driver of Vietnam's GDP. Jeremy and Valerie also talked about the influence of high-profile educational backgrounds like Harvard, Oxford and NUS on tech startups, environmental policy, and the impact of global cultural events on local economies. As daily routines normalize and people venture out more frequently, these platforms are tapping into the dine-in experience to offer convenience and affordability. Grab has initiated a dine-in feature trial across 15 cities in Singapore, Thailand, and Indonesia. This feature enables users to pre-purchase dine-in vouchers at discounts of up to 50%. Additionally, users can access restaurant menus, read reviews, place orders, and pay using a QR-based system, all within the app. The company plans to expand this service to Malaysia, the Philippines, and Vietnam in the near future. Foodpanda was a pioneer in introducing dine-in features in Singapore back in 2021. This innovation, known as Foodpanda Dine-in, has since expanded to include multiple countries such as Thailand, the Philippines, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. Across these nations, over 8,000 restaurants have joined the platform, offering dine-in discounts ranging from 15% to 25%. Foodpanda's Asia Pacific CEO, Jakob Sebastian Angele, expressed the platform's enthusiasm for dine-in services, foreseeing considerable potential in this expansion. Despite its growth in the dine-in sector, food delivery remains Foodpanda's primary focus, followed by grocery delivery. In collaboration with restaurant solutions provider TabSquare, Foodpanda has also launched automated food ordering processes through digital menus and QR codes, aiming to enhance the dining experience. With increasing dining costs due to inflation, Grab's dine-in discounts have been welcomed by consumers. This not only facilitates restaurant discovery but also makes dining out more affordable. Analysts believe that Grab's dine-in service can indirectly generate additional revenue by earning commission fees on dine-in voucher purchases. While both Grab and Foodpanda experienced impressive growth over the past few years, the rate has been moderating recently as customers return to their regular routines. Benchmark Company, an investment banking firm, projects a normalized food delivery growth with a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 13% through 2025. This adjustment is attributed to shifting consumer preferences, reduced incentives, and the gradual return to in-person dining. The expansion of Grab and Foodpanda into dine-in services reflects a strategic response to evolving consumer needs post-pandemic. As more people seek affordable dining experiences and venture outside, these platforms are aligning their services with changing behaviors, providing not only food delivery but also seamless dine-in experiences. This transition is expected to contribute to the platforms' ongoing growth and expansion strategies. Reference article: https://www.cnbc.com/2023/08/03/food-delivery-apps-grab-and-foodpanda-expand-into-dine-in-services.html

In this episode of the Impulso Podcast, go on a journey with us through Meituan's evolution. From the founders' failed previous entrepreneurial adventures, to the company's initial founding as a Group Buy company in China. Learn how Meituan remained strong through the group buy battle and Alibaba's clear dominance of the market share by doubling down on their service offerings. After building a successful movie ticket purchasing platform, as well as a one and no star hotel booking platform, Wang Xing finally came up with the idea to move into food delivery. At the time, Alibaba's ele.me was the only real option around, but as it focused largely on universities and students, a large segment of the population was left to tap into as demand for food delivery increased. Once again, Alibaba and Meituan faced off; Meituan's years of honing its operational efficiencies came in handy as they slowly acquired their now extremely extensive user base. But this all happened almost a decade ago. What is Meituan up to now? Learn about the AI company founded by an ex-founder of Meituan itself, Wang Huiwen, and the company's acquisition of this tech company. Is Meituan entering China's AI race? They also recently launched in Hong Kong, bringing their signature speed and efficiency guarantees to KeeTa (aptly named after the word “cheetah”) to compete with the likes of Deliveroo and FoodPanda in this new market. There is clearly a lot to be learnt from this immensely successful company. Read the full report here: https://momentum.asia/product/meituan_finding_business_clarity/
Welcome back to "Impulso," the podcast by Momentum Works where we explore the latest trends, breakthroughs, and stories from the worlds of business and technology. In this exciting second episode, we explore Meituan's expansion into Hong Kong with KeeTa, Grab's co-founder stepping down and what it means for the tech giant, Alibaba's most dramatic restructuring in over 2 decades, and everyone's favourite beverage: bubble tea. We begin with the context of Meituan; a company that has pivoted its direction too many times to count before landing where it is today. Though it has worn many masks, Meituan hasn't really ventured out of China since its founding in 2010, so its debut in Hong Kong has been top of mind this last week as the company enters the pond previously dominated by well-established Foodpanda and Deliveroo. Our attention then turns to the recent announcement of Grab's cofounder, Tan Hooi Ling, stepping down from her role as COO. We discuss what this means for the company's future, and what tangible impact this change will have internally. This brings us to the wider question of founders and the companies they start; when it is time to say goodbye, what do we say goodbye to with them? Another founder who has been in the news lately, is that of the biggest ecommerce company in the world; Alibaba's Jack Ma. Since his return to China, the company has announced its largest restructuring in over two decades - the split of the singular Alibaba into six independent companies, each focused on a sector or subsidiary of the former whole business, with its own CEO, board of directors, vision for the future, and IPO plans. There is so much to talk about with regards to the motivations behind this change, the context in which it occurred, and the speed at which its being carried out, that we barely scratched the surface. For more on this, stay tuned for our first in depth episode coming to you next Wednesday at 8am (GMT+8) for more. Before we say goodbye, we would be remiss to not mention Momentum Academy (Momentum Works' corporate academy arm) and their new immersive bubble tea program. The bubble tea market in Southeast Asia is almost a USD$4 billion one, and Momentum Academy is taking you behind the shaker of a bubble tea store, and into its strategy. "Impulso" offers an engaging blend of insightful analysis and thought-provoking discussions to keep our listeners informed and inspired. Whether you're a tech enthusiast, a business professional, or simply curious about the latest developments, this episode will leave you craving more knowledge and understanding in the dynamic realm of business and technology. In this episode, I speak with Maha Shahzad, Founder and CEO of BusCaro, a mobility startup in Pakistan that is changing the way that commuters travel. Maha grew up between the US and Pakistan and has worked at many well-known startups in Pakistan inluding FoodPanda, Careem, and Swvl. Maha has seen first-hand the financial, accessibility, and security challenges faced by commuters, particularly women, and started BusCaro to solve them. Maha started BusCaro in August of 2022 and is already active in 3 cities across Pakistan. You can learn more about them by visiting buscaro.com. This is not our typical Green Room episode focused on a fintech startup, but given my own background in mobility and Maha's inspiring story, I wanted to share the good work that she is doing, especially as we celebrate International Women's Day 2023. We added a few minutes at the end of the podcast to share about Maha's experience working and fundraising as a woman, and I am happy to support her as part of Findicate, a women-focused angel investing syndicate I recently founded - DM me or shoot me an email to findicateangels@gmail.com if you want to learn more.
