Today on the podcast I am talking about how "financial freedom" is a farce and a terrible money goal to have for yourself.  While there may be variations on how one defines "financial freedom" for themselves- it's still quite common for most folks to have "zero debt" as a pre-requisite of "financial freedom."  Put another way, this means you can't be financially free if you are paying back debt. And this my friend, is the problem. In fact, it's not just one problem- there are TWO problems with this definition.  This is such a problematic concept that I'm dedicating a full episode to this topic.  Below are some key insights and learnings from today's episode:   Why I coined the terms Mindset Masquerade and Debt Shaming Culture  How to leverage an understanding of the Mindset Masquerade and Debt Shaming Culture when it comes to seeking “financial freedom.” Why it's incorrect and incongruent to equivocate working hard with wealth The danger of making your “financial freedom” contingent on a future goal or version of yourself The importance of financial literacy including how to use debt as leverage.   This is an important topic we are covering on today's episode.  Please listen, subscribe, and share the episode with folks who will benefit from this topic.   Naomi ____________________________________________________________________________   Sign up to get More Money, More Power, an email I send a few times a month. Today on the podcast we are talking about the power of progress.  We live in a society and culture that is very much results oriented.  I think there is such a hyper-focus on outcomes, results, and goals that we can miss a lot the goodness that comes along the way.    In this episode I also shared about a major podcast goal that took almost 2 years to complete.  If I'd only focused on the goal I would have missed out on countless wins, learnings, aha moments, and goodness along the way.  And life is too short to miss out on goodness!   I will be covering four mindset shifts you can take to reorient yourself to focus on progress instead of results and outcomes. I want you to pull out a pen and notebook for this episode, take notes and carve out some time for reflection.   Below are some key insights and learnings from today's episode: Your power is in the present. Recognizing this is how we can have some impact and influence over our future circumstances and results.   How to avoid falling into what I call the “Bang Fizzle Pitfall”- entering into a commitment with excitement for it only peter out and come to an end.   How to recognize when personal development and improvement becomes unhealthy What it means to be in a state of expansion and how this can we can get a wider perspective on all options you have available as you progress towards a desired outcome. Why it's important to take into account the season of life you are within as that can impact how you go about progressing towards your goals.    This is an important topic we are covering on today's episode.  Please listen, subscribe, and share the episode with folks who will benefit from this topic.   Naomi, The OutSpoken Girlfriend® _________________________________________________ Sign up to get More Money, More Power, an email I send a few times a month. 87: The Power Of Radical Self Advocacy

Today on the podcast we are talking about the power of practicing radical self-advocacy.  I call this radical because for many folks who have marginalized and intersectional identities, the practice of standing up for yourself can be a radical act within a society and culture that does not recognize the humanity and rights of all individuals.  Practicing self-advocacy is a form of self-love and of self-care.     For women and folks impacted by misogyny and sexism, there is a risk in practicing self-advocacy because we are socialized as girls and women to be likeable, to be pleasant, to be nice, to put and to put other folks' comfort ahead of our own.  This is a radical act when we are living within a society that has bias, prejudice, and discrimination built into the fabric of our culture.    So the reality is one must be strategic in how you go about being a self-advocate, you need to understand the power dynamics at play within any situation, but what we are not going to do is allow worry about our likeability and perceived lack of humility to keep us from standing up for ourselves and our interests.   Each time you stand up for yourself, make your interests known, communicate your non-negotiables, and are honest with yourself and others you are and living in alignment with your values. You practicing self-advocacy in your personal life is a power move.   Below are some key insights from today's episode: The power of self-advocacy and how it's a crucial element to your self-care routine.   Practicing self-advocacy won't guarantee a desired outcome but it will always be of benefit to you.   Why self-advocacy is a power move especially for folks who have experienced bias, discrimination, and prejudice from the past and in the present. Why it's not always easy to be a self-advocate due to how girls and women have been socialized The powerful examples of how Simone Biles and Naomi Osaka- premier athletes and women of color who have unapologetically self-advocated for themselves by putting their mental and emotional health as a priority over profit. Learn three mindset shifts that can help you go from information about self-advocacy to implementation   This is an important topic we are covering on today's episode.  Please listen, subscribe, and share the episode with folks who will benefit from this topic.   Naomi, The OutSpoken Girlfriend® ____________________________________________________________________________   Sign up to get More Money, More Power, an email I send a few times a month. In some areas we are brimming with self-trust, and in other areas...not so much. And that's okay. The process of cultivating self-trust is a life-long practice.  Because of this, it helps to be reminded that doubt is part of the human experience.    This can include doubt and uncertainty when it comes to making decisions about money. When it comes to making money decisions, our thoughts and beliefs about money are guiding our actions.  Money does not spend itself.  Money does not save itself. Money does not invest itself.  Money does not earn itself. We are the ones making the decisions.     But we are making money decisions within a belief system. Our belief system is something to help us to make sense of the world.  Our belief systems act as a filter through which we view the world and our place in it.    And countless beliefs are interwoven within our belief systems.     We have beliefs about ourselves.  Beliefs about our self-worth and our capabilities.  Beliefs about what we "should" do (or not do) with our money.  We have beliefs about our partners, spouses, and folks with whom we share financial responsibilities. Often times our beliefs about money are instilled in us early on, as children.     There are the beliefs we are told outright about money from our families, elders, friends, and communities. There are the beliefs placed upon us by society and the culture we live- in terms of who gets to have money and who does not.  Who is good with money and who is not? Who is worthy of investment and who is not?   Listen to today's episode where we cover the following key topics: The concept of belief and those beliefs we hold both at the conscious and subconscious levels. Because there is no talking about money without talking about beliefs and how it shows up in our day to day decisions which includes decisions around money.  Some of the common money stories and beliefs that can get in the way of your goals.   Learn an easy and simple method on how you can flip the script on some of the money beliefs that may be getting in your way.      This is an important topic we are covering on today's episode.     Naomi ____________________________________________________________________   Sign up to get More Money, More Power, an email I send a few times a month. Early graffiti artists were commonly called "writers" or "taggers" (individuals who write simple "tags," or their stylized signatures, with the goal of tagging as many locations as possible.) The goals was to have one's work seen by as many people as possible, in as many places as possible. So taking a rivals tag name and replicating it upside down or backwards was a way to showcase one's own superior skills. It was a way to show a rival's "script" or "tag" was so simple you could replicate it any way.  This is where "flip the script" originates and it's important for us to recognize it – Click Here to read more. "On The Other Side Of Rest Is Flow" which is a quote and teaching I've learned from one of my friends and mentors Ixchel Lunar.  I'm very excited to be back and releasing new episodes of the OutSpoken Girlfriend podcast. I thought that I was going to take a shorter vacation and be back on the mic in June...but here we are over halfway through July and this was the time I needed.   Today is a behind the scenes episode. Slowing down created space for me to really pay attention to what was going on within me and to just rest. Here's the thing, although I was taking time off for rest, the time away was not all rainbows, butterflies, and unicorns. There were some doubts and insecurities and questions that came up. But with time comes perspective so I'm in a position to share more on this.  Listen in to hear me talk about self-doubt, visibility, who gets to rest (and who does not), and some of the mind-f*ckery that is so critical to deconstruct in our modern society.  I had real worries I'd have no more podcast listeners since I was not putting out new content the last few months.  This worry led me to get curious about just how deep within all of us is the culture of relentless productivity and the edict to “get sh*t done” at any cost. It's time to vanquish the hold of relentless productivity- and live in a state of flow. We are not talking about creativity for the purpose of consumption.    Today on the podcast I am talking about creativity that is just FOR YOU. Creation done simply for the joy of it. Today on the podcast we are talking about the power of everyday people-specifically the power we have with our daily choices, with our actions, with our words, with what we speak about and what are silent about- ultimately the power we have to create a society and culture where we are all valued, where we are all safe, and where we all embrace our shared humanity.    How do we use this power? By rooting out white supremacy culture (aka white supremacy delusion).   Because white supremacy culture at its core- is violent. And the violence of white supremacy culture comes in all forms- there is direct violence, structural and systemic violence, interpersonal violence, and collective violence.  There is violence to the mind, heart, and psyche. There is violence to the spirit and violence to the soul.  There is violence that is passed down from generation to generation. And there is the violence of silence and complicity.  The violence of white supremacy culture is all-encompassing.     The good news is this- we can root out white supremacy culture. We can deprive it of oxygen and not allow it to spread.   Tune into today's episode is to learn 5 actions you can take to root out white supremacy culture. Today on the podcast I am covering some topics that came up during the workshop I held a few weeks ago. The workshop was titled "Where The F*ck Is My Money" and I covered some key concepts around Disappearing Money Syndrome- and that is when you have money coming but you don't know where it's going. I talked about the common reasons your money might be disappearing and how to manage your money in way that goes way beyond budgets. But in addition to money tactics, with me you are always going to get the bigger picture as well. We talked about why it matters for justice informed people to have more money and more power. I covered what I call the money mindset villains- specifically Debt Shaming Culture and the Mindset Masquerade. I talked about how it's important to understand the language of finance and not internalize the oppression found in the language of money...and of course I talked about the importance of knowing your values when it comes to decision making around your money- because money does not spend itself. This was a free workshop and if you missed it, you can still get access to the recording by signing up for the guide to More Money, More Power- the link is below in the show notes. Today on the podcast I'm covering some of the questions and topics that came up during the workshop. I broke up the questions into major themes I want to cover. Today on the show we are talking about the importance of help. And asking for help might be tough, and even when we do ask for help- actually getting it can feel impossible. But just because we know in our heads and our minds we are deserving of help and support- it doesn't always mean we feel like we actually deserve it. We may embrace not needing anyone or anything. We may find a sense of purpose and value in being the one who handles all the things, at work, at home and everything in between. And in making ourselves available for everything and everybody- we can lose sight of what we want for ourselves. So how do we push back against the feeling that we are not deserving of help? How do we disrupt the conditioning that has been placed within us to do everything for everybody? And to do it with a smile? Even during a health pandemic. If asking for help, or even feeling worthy of help is something hard for you to do- I want you to practice reframing "getting help" to "getting resourced." Because when you are adequately resourced, you have what you need to thrive. And when it comes to resources I think the fundamentals are the resources of time, energy, and money. Because time, energy, and money are sources of power. Thus when we are fully resourced with our time, with our energy, with our money- that's when we are best positioned to amplify our power. Hold up! Before you skip over the episode because of the title- please pause.     If after reading this you think- well I'm not a Black woman so this episode is not for me- that is incorrect.  This episode is for you too because remember not everything has to be centered on one's own identity to get value from learning about others.     A part of what makes us justice informed people is that we are on a path of unlearning and we seek out information and insights from others that are different from us.  We are on this journey together. ____________   This episodes goes live on Monday, January 18th which is a holiday here in the US, where we recognize the life, legacy, and impact of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr who was born on January 15th 1929.We recognize the day of his birth, not the date of his death.     As I was preparing for this episode I knew I wanted to talk about why Black women matter and how to make sure self-care remains a priority for Black women no matter what is happening around us.      This is a behind the scenes type of episode where I am speaking directly from the heart so there is minimal editing- just me, the mic, and what you hear is what you get!    Thank you for listening to The OutSpoken Girlfriend podcast. Happy New Year! I am someone who loves the New Year energy that comes with the month of January. It's a feeling of having a fresh start, a clean slate, and for me it's also a month of reflection and sentimentality because it's by birthday month- yes, it's Capricorn season! As I was reflecting on what we'd talk about on the OutSpoken Girlfriend podcast this month- I always start with going back to my vision which is about helping women get more money, more power, and f*ck up the oppressive systems getting in your way. So I decided this month on the podcast we will be covering themes that will help you tap into your internal power specific to habits, planning, and focus. We're also going to talk about leveraging your external power around gaining clarity and getting organized when it comes to your money, energy, and time. But before we do any of that- we have to set the foundation. That foundation starts with YOU- you setting and living on your own terms. Listen to today's episode to get insight on the three principles I believe are crucial to living a life on your own terms: Knowing your core values and be committed to living by them Accepting yourself today; not just focusing on who you want to be in the future Making self-trust and self-advocacy a practice in your life I believe these three principles are foundational when it comes to creating plans, and taking decisive action. And I'm going to take each of these principles and go a little deeper on each one to provide context. So tune in! Thank you for listening to The OutSpoken Girlfriend podcast. The first thing I do is focus on my beliefs.    On today's episode I am talking about what I call “bone deep beliefs.”   These are the beliefs that are rooted and grounded in who we are- the beliefs so DEEP IN OUR BONES- that these beliefs cannot be shaken nor shattered. Not by anything nor by anyone.   Your “bone deep beliefs” about yourself are an internal source of power. It's important to tap into your internal power before you start planning goals and creating action plans.   Today's episode is a little different in that I will be externally processing some fears I have about 2021- and how I am using my bone deep beliefs about myself- to move forward in spite of these fears.   Listen to today's episode to get insights on the following: Three questions to ask yourself to identify your own “bone deep beliefs” Why it's important to tap into your “bone deep beliefs” as an internal source of power How the psychology of belief bias in the human brain can help us achieve goals   Thank you for listening to The OutSpoken Girlfriend podcast. "Power at its best, is love implementing the demands of justice, and justice at its best is power correcting everything that stands against love."  - Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.     This message from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is timeless.        And it is the inspiration for today's podcast episode.     These are critically important times we are living in, important for the future of our planet, our culture, and the world we want to live in and pass on to future generations.     Today on the podcast, I am asking us to reflect on our beliefs, decisions, and actions through the lens of our shared humanity.  And we will do just this by taking a deeper dive into the following current events:    US Thanksgiving- On the 4th Thursday in the month of November, the US celebrates the national holiday of Thanksgiving.  Also, the 4th Thursday in the month of November is observed as a National Day Of Mourning for many Native Americans, and their supporters.  American society renders Native Americans and their culture as invisible- it's past time to reimagine how we can create a more just and inclusive culture by examining our own actions and beliefs when it comes to Thanksgiving.   2020 US Presidential Election- The President Elect is Joe Biden and his term starts when he is inaugurated in January 2021. However, Trump and the Republican Party are taking actions to disenfranchise the votes of hundreds of thousands of Black Americans. From the founding of the US-the enslaved were viewed as less than human and this dehumanization is codified in the US Constitution.  Systemic racism continues to be a barrier to Black Americans- and we are seeing this occur in how Trump and the Republican Party are seeking to throw away the votes of Black Americans were Biden won the election. This is a direct assault on American citizens and how democracy is supposed to work- it's past time to hold all elected officials accountable to ensuring the democratic process is equitable and available to all.    COVID19 Pandemic- We are continuing to see record infection rates of COVID19.   Poor people, women, and people of color are disproportionately negatively impacted by health and economic impact of the COVI19. This is not just about our individual liberties and freedoms to go where we want to go and do what we want to do.  We don't live in isolation.  For the love of our shared humanity, let's protect each other when it comes to this virus. And so instead of thinking of these as three distinct topics, I decided to talk about the common thread that runs through each of these topics- and that common thread is our shared humanity.     This is an important episode. Tune in. Episode 62 - Having Brave Conversations: Why It's Important, Necessary, And Powerful

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 16, 2020 25:33

Some conversations can be hard to have, they can be challenging, and difficult. Too often, we are tempted to focus on what makes a conversation hard for us. Instead, let's reframe how we view the conversations we are having in our everyday lives.   I want us to reframe in that we think about these conversations not as hard, but instead we think about them as brave.      This reframe is especially important if you belong to a group society seeks to marginalize. This reframe is also important for those who seek to use their privilege to advocate for others.   This reframe allows us to acknowledge there may be fear and difficulty in what we are talking about, but it puts the focus on our acts of courage and bravery instead of focusing on what may be hard about the conversation.    For those of us who are justice informed people, for those of us who society seeks to marginalize, for those of us who are allies and advocates for others- Brave conversations are a necessity, they are important, and they are powerful.    Listen to today's episode for insights on the following: How holding brave conversations is a form of internal power Why brave conversations refocus your energy on what is within you control How brave conversations help you remain rooted in in your values and principles   This is an important topic we are discussing on today's show- tune in. The results of the 2020 US Presidential election are in and Trump has officially been voted out of office.  Boy bye!  Yes, it was a significant step to get Trump out of the executive branch of the US government. And we get to celebrate that more people voted him out than voted to keep him in office.   But just because Trump is gone- doesn't mean Trump-ism is gone.   No, Trump-ism is alive and kicking.   For those of us who are justice informed people our work continues on well beyond this election.    Today on the podcast I am sharing these 5 lessons from the 2020 US Presidential election: We will not be fooled by the “nice” oppressors (I'm looking at you Nikki Haley). We will not be complacent now that Trump has lost the election because Trump-ism lives on.  We will tap into our power as everyday people in holding those we elect accountable We will learn from Native Americans & Black Americans who have immense knowledge and experience in dismantling systems of oppression and building a culture that is just and inclusive. Today on the podcast I am talking about the essentials of rest. There is the notion that rest is for the lazy, rest is for the entitled, and rest is unnecessary.   As if all of our waking hours should be allocated to productivity and “getting shit done.”   But rest is vital, and I consider it to be a human right- to have the time and space to rest. Rest is essential for the body and for the mind. Most importantly it allow us to just “be.”   Also, if you listened to last week's ‘behind the scenes episode', I am also sharing some details on how I felt AFTER recording the episode (spoiler alert- there were some moments of doubt & uncertainty, but I had a community of people that rallied around me). My hope is that by sharing my experience, you will know you are not alone and that it's okay to feel nervous while doing the right thing. Today I am talking about the intersection of personal finance and personal development.   There are many people that will tell you that the solutions to all your problems is to fix your mindset and build better habits.  These two simple fixes will help you to lose weight, manifest money, land the dream job, and have the best relationships.   Essentially you are told that you have a personal problem and it's your job to fix yourself.   And yet, many times there is not any attention given to the Oppressive Systems and the "isms" that often create the problems we are trying to solve for ourselves.   Often times it's not a personal problem that needs to be fixed- it's an Oppressive System that needs to be dismantled.   And this my friends is where Debt Shaming Culture meets The Mindset Masquerade.   These are two terms I've coined that represent the underbelly of the personal development and personal finance industries.   In personal finance, Debt Shaming Culture tells you that your value and character is tied to your debt. In personal development, the Mindset Masquerade tells you that all your problems are created by you and yours alone to solve.   I call B.S.   Listen in to today's episode for insights on the following: Why I coined the terms Mindset Masquerade and Debt Shaming Culture  How to identify & disrupt the impact of the Mindset Masquerade in how you view your success How to determine if you are being influenced by Debt Shaming Culture when making financial goals How to leverage an understanding of the Mindset Masquerade and Debt Shaming Culture when it comes to seeking “financial freedom.”   This is an important topic we are covering on the podcast today.  Tune in.   Naomi -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Additional Resources Mentioned   If you would like to explore finance consulting with me I have openings starting in August 2020 To schedule your free 60 minute clarity call- CLICK HERE   This is the map I used to research Native American traditional territories- https://native-land.ca/   Episode 14 My Manifesto- Diet Culture, Patriarchy, And A Woman's Worth  Episode 31 Scarcity, Security, And The Mindset Masquerade Episode 33 The Invisible Predator In Your Finances- How To Identify It & Disarm It Episode 40 Racism & America Part 3: History, Integrity, And Speaking Truth To Power Episode 42 Your Zone Of Genius Is Unassailable Join Us Free Private FB Group  Join us at facebook.com/groups/outspokengirlfriend/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/theoutspokengirlfriend/  (@theoutspokengirlfriend) My Website: www.naomiscottclark.com Email Me:  hello@naomiscottclark.com
