Listeners of The Reckless Pursuit that love the show mention: wherever,What Does Pouring into Someone Mean? And How Do I Know it's Safe? When we pour into others, we are sharing the contents of our hearts. Sometimes this comes from wanting to share our passion and love for someone or something while other times it comes from needing to convey our deepest held secrets. If you're in a mutually healthy and safe relationship or environment, pouring your heart may come easy. But if you're not in a safe and healthy relationship or environment, it's not always reciprocal and can cause more harm than good. We're curious though, what are your thoughts? What does pouring into someone look like for you? How do you know when it's safe to do so? We'd love to hear from you! Leave us a comment in our NOMADS community or reach out via social media. Why Does it Matter? You may be asking, “why does what matter”, which is exactly the right question. Why does it matter? What is it? Why are we here, doing this thing? What purpose does it serve? What even is it are we looking for? This week's question opens up the conversation for even more questions. But what's new? Whether you're a business owner, a podcast host, a dentist, a ring leader, a pastor, or a middle school art teacher, you've probably asked yourself why does any of it matter? What purpose does it serve to do what you're doing right now in this moment? And does there have to be a deeper meaning or purpose behind what we're doing (or not doing)? The only answer we have for you is simply, or not so simply, “Yes, and”. It's all up for interpretation. You have the freedom to go as deep as you want to go. We're curious though, what are your thoughts? Why does it all matter to you? We'd love to hear from you! Leave us a comment in our NOMADS community or reach out via social media. How Do You Reconstruct? What's the difference between deconstruction and reconstruction? What does it look like to rebuild from the ground up? How do we give ourselves room to grow and space to evaluate ourselves? Where should we end up after asking our questions? This week, we're sharing a question submitted through our NOMADS community about reconstruction. Many of us are familiar with the idea of deconstruction and questioning our beliefs but unsure of what to do with those questions. The beautiful thing is that de/re construction is a cyclical process, meaning that we're constantly growing and changing our beliefs based on experiences and communing with others. In order to reconstruct, we must be open to new possibilities and allow ourselves to not have all the answers. We're curious though, how do you reconstruct? Have you recently reconstructed your faith? We'd love to hear from you! Leave us a comment in our NOMADS community or reach out via social media. Is “Christian” Still the Right Term for a Follower of Christ? Can I still call myself a Christian if many of the actions of others don't represent Christ? Is there a better alternative than the term “Christian”? Does “Follower of the Way or “Follower of Christ” mean the same thing as Christianity? Does it have the same connotation? Is there anything wrong with the term Christian or is it outdated? Can the term “Christian” evolve into something else that means truth and love to us? This week, we polled our NOMADS group if they struggled with calling themselves Christian, and while we had varying answers, the majority of everyone said yes. Throughout many conversations we've had in our group and on our social media channels, other individuals shared that while they don't have a hard time associating with the term Christian, they had a hard time associating with other Christians. So we wanted to bring the conversation behind the mic. Have a question you'd like featured on the show? Looking for a topic to learn more about? “What are Green Flags to Look for in a Spiritual Leader, Mentor, or Parent? Do pastors have “spiritual authority” over their congregation? Are titles given or received? And what does it mean to have a “spiritual parent”? “What are Green Flags to Look for in a Church?” And what are the green flags to look for in a community? Do you have to be like-minded to find a healthy community? Or can you disagree on beliefs and still love and respect one another? “What is Church?” How do you define Church? Is it a building you attend on specific days of the week? Is the Church more of a diverse, like-hearted community? Or is it a mixture of both? You've probably heard the phrase, “Church isn't a building; We are the Church.” But if you've experienced church hurt or have never attended a single church service in your life, it may be hard to convey what it truly is. Once you've defined what Church is (or isn't) for yourself, this opens the door for even more conversation to flourish, such as defining what a healthy Church body looks like and Church leadership. If you feel like you have more questions than answers, this series is for you! This week, we are starting our 3-part series of “Green Flags,” where we explore what makes a healthy church, creating a healthy community, and what to look for when in a healthy Spiritual leader. As we share our personal ideas of what makes a Church in part one, we also explore the difference between Church as a noun vs. Church as a verb. --- JOIN THE COMMUNITY: If you'd like to keep the conversation going, we want to invite you, our reckless listeners, to join our NOMADS Community! Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven: a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot, a time to kill and a time to heal, a time to tear down and a time to build, a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance, a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them, a time to embrace and a time to refrain, a time to search and a time to give up, a time to keep and a time to throw away, a time to tear and a time to mend, a time to be silent and a time to speak, a time to love and a time to hate, a time for war and a time for peace. Sometimes we look around at the chaos and can't help but ask: “Where is Jesus in all this”. Then we look in the mirror. --- Jesus is all around us. But more than that, He is in and is everything as well. The darkest dark and brightest light all contain the echo of Christ. This week, we share a quick thought on how to find Christ in the chaos. We talk about how Christ is not far off or distant, but rather how to find the God (not necessarily good, but the God) in those hard moments and seemingly barren events. --- JOIN THE COMMUNITY: If you'd like to keep the conversation going, we want to invite you, our reckless listeners, to join The Reckless Community! Can you lose salvation or did you never have it to begin with? Or maybe it's option 3: You found God along the way... --- Depending on your church upbringing, you have probably heard of the idea that one might lose their salvation. That God was chillin' at his desk-throne with a big bottle of White-Out® just waiting to blot your sorry broad butt out of his nice book and swap you with some new heathen worth saving. Or, if you grew up a little more southern Baptist, maybe you thought that if you mustered up the guts to walk away, you never loved God in the first place. To quote one of the great thinkers of our time, Gym Class Heroes, “if that ain't love then I don't know what love is”. What if all this talk of losing your salvation is actually a limitation? What if, instead of limiting the thoughts of an amazing Savior, we opened our mind to who that is beyond just what we have been taught? What if when we got tired of reenacting miracles of old, we found God and actually developed an intimate relationship with Him/Her. That would probably look a lot like a loss to someone who hasn't lived it. --- JOIN THE COMMUNITY: If you'd like to keep the conversation going, we want to invite you, our reckless listeners, to join The Reckless Community! Sometimes things happen that are just too bizarre. So much so that we halt our original scheduled content to talk about. This week what is it? Satan shoes, of course. --- So apparently a rapper put some blood in some Nike shoes and labeled them devil Shoes or “Satan Shoes”. Of course, Christians are upset and now boycotting Nike for them. Just one problem: Nike didn't make the shoes…. And so here we are, once again looking to react instead of respond, judge instead of love, and curse and blame instead of showing compassion. I mean, what's better than freaking out at a company that had nothing to do with something rather than addressing the trauma that caused the item to be made in the first place, am I right? --- JOIN THE COMMUNITY: If you'd like to keep the conversation going, we want to invite you, our reckless listeners, to join The Reckless Community! Life is more organic and less industrial. Our goal is to grow out, not build up. It's good to just be and live content. --- Babel, that tall tower that we built to reach heaven. No one online cares that much about your opinions unless you share the same opinions as they do. There, we said it. --- Have you ever been scrolling along and saw someone share something that just burned you up? Maybe you were watching the news and just learned a new, outrageous thing to be upset about. “I can't believe they did this!?” News Flash: This is all intentional. Controversy keeps ratings high, money flowing, people in power, and most importantly, you under its dominion. I know, I know. We are sounding a bit like conspirators. Then I invite you to go through history and observe how this is and has been the case for years. Control people's emotions, control the people. From political powers to religious institutions and everything in between, the Satanic mindset of control has been deployed. So how do we get free of it? It's simple! (and not so simple…) Cut off the flow of information. You can't be upset and meaningless things if no one can tell you what to be mad about. Now, We are not saying to turn a blind eye. Not at all! Sharing the gospel is not blasting every little thing about your faith online. It's okay to have a private relationship with God. --- Welcome to the wacky world of faith and social media where we've been conditioned to share every little detail about our faith online to justify our salvation. Did you pray today? You better post about it! Have a blessing loft your way? Public proclamations are in order! Maybe you are feeling a bit of a struggle come on… BUT GOD IS GOOD! Your relationship with Christ is intimate. And like most other intimate relationships, some things are meant to keep private. This week, for our episode that officially marks THREE YEARS OF THIS SHOW, we are talking about something that is basically the polar opposite of a podcast. (fitting, right?) Your self worth is not denied by your salary, your social status, or your faith. We are all humans. Christ came to unify. --- We love to define people. Make more money? Oh, you're special. In the ministry? Wow, you're chosen by God. Have a bit of fame? Man, we just need to wear those clothes you wear so people think we are something special too! Labels help us define categories in our lives...but those aren't intended to be the lens we view our fellow humans through. When we walk into a room, we can instantly gauge the atmosphere. Ever heard the term, “You could cut the tension with a knife”? This whole episode is dedicated to realizing our value, to respect ourselves enough to create the atmosphere that promotes our growth (and in doing so, promotes the growth of others), and realizing that those who do not value who you were created to be should not and do not have the authority to speak into your life. Life is a gift and Christ came to show us our humanity and equality. Life is what we make it. But also what we make it can end up being so far from living. --- Nothing like having a gun pulled on you to make you rethink life, am I right? This week, we are talking about a crazy experience we had a few weeks ago that left us a bit shaken. But we learned a lot from it! Things like how so much of what we do is completely meaningless, how God and spirituality are so much more simple than we make them out to be, and how the simple joys in life are what count. This episode recaps a truly sobering moment in our lives. We hope that this is also a reminder to us that what brings us joy is worth pressing into. Sometimes our faith isn't at the forefront of our thoughts. It's like Jesus on cruise control. This is okay. --- When you're new to the faith you are often taught to meditate on Christ and to imitate him. Like riding a bike, at first, it's all you can do to not just crash and scuff your shins. But as you get better and more familiar with balance and braking, you begin to focus upward and outward, taking in your surroundings. The same applies to faith. Just like riding a bike or driving a car, our relationship with Christ becomes so close to us that the action of faith itself becomes indistinguishable from daily life. And this is okay! Now of course there are times we have to give it our focus (and should!) but there is no built-in putting faith on cruise control, rolling the windows down, and just enjoying the ride. --- JOIN THE COMMUNITY: If you'd like to keep the conversation going, we want to invite you, our reckless listeners, to join The Reckless Community! Jesus was full of grace but in our terms, He wasn't graceful. He was excellent but in the way we use it, He wasn't full of excellence at all. --- Church culture loves the term excellent. Society loves the term graceful. Both of these terms carry a load of importance but neither of them are used the way they should be. What does it mean to be full of grace? Is it simply how we carry ourselves? How does one achieve excellence? Is it our mannerisms and how we dress? This week we are talking about grace and excellence. We discuss how both of these terms are vital, yet have been taken to mean something much vainer than their intended purpose. This one goes out to all the people who were told their gifts were given to them by God not to be used, but to be laid down to Him as a sacrifice. --- So you have something you enjoy. So what? I mean, if you're not doing it “unto the Lord” then you're wasting your time. Don't you know that unless you knit unto God or play worship music or teach modest fashion tips and how to rock a denim skirt, you are sinning? God gave you those gifts so you could lay them down as a sacrifice unto Him. I mean yea, sure, he gave you those gifts but he either wants them back or wants you to cast them at His altar and never use them. I mean, if i gave you a gift card you best believe I expect you to go spend it on me! Why else would I give you a gift? It for sure isn't for YOU! If all of that sounded like complete garbage, yet all too relatable than this episode is for you. --- JOIN THE COMMUNITY: If you'd like to keep the conversation going, we want to invite you, our reckless listeners, to join The Reckless Community! Why does Jesus use parables to teach? Why do we love and relate so well to allegory? What's the reason behind our love for stories? --- There once was a listener who opened their podcast app to see what was new. Upon the realization that The Reckless Pursuit had a new episode, they took a look to see what it was about. To be quite honest, the title intrigued them so much that they clicked and had to take for themselves a listen. (Hey, I think this is talking about you…) People love a good story. We draw connections, dig into deeper meanings, and tear apart plots and narratives to gather what life lessons we can carry away from them. We love to hear of the past; to reminisce on things that once were while drawing comparisons to how nothing has really changed. Stories are beautiful, terrifying, and the parables and allegory they contain shake us to our core and alter how we choose to exist on this big rock. What if I told you that parables were more than just life lessons? What if I told you that parables are in reality, how God experiences His own constructs? Without us, the body, hands, and feet, there would only be ideas and no way for God to even comprehend the very thing He strategically planned. As an architect can envision a project by its blueprints, so did God build this place with the intention of seeing the divine reality play out in a tangible way. It's all quite beautiful really, even if it is only a metaphor. --- JOIN THE COMMUNITY: If you'd like to keep the conversation going, we want to invite you, our reckless listeners, to join The Reckless Community! Does God care if we curse or swear? What makes a word bad or good in the eyes of God? --- Let's be honest. We have all had that moment where some random person takes out their bad day on us. We are driving to the store to get cut off by some bloke on the phone. Our boss is in a pissy mood and chews us out for work they didn't do. Our spouse had a rough day and snips at the first words out of our mouth. And of course, our first thought in these situations has at some point been something a bit… nasty. Then there are those times you get up to get a drink of water in the middle of the night only to realize you don't have any. So you fumble downstairs with the lights off (You don't want to wake anyone.) just to catch your toe on the corner of a cabinet. “D@** that piece of $&*%”! What, just us? Okay then. But how much does God care about this? Our traditional upbringing says that curse words are sinful. But is it the word or the intent? What makes a word a curse? When does a prayer become profanity? What instance of saying God out loud strays from casual conversation to taking His name in vain? Welcome to Christian cursing and the power of intent. This is a 101 on what our words say about our faith (and what our faith says about our words). --- JOIN THE COMMUNITY: If you'd like to keep the conversation going, we want to invite you, our reckless listeners, to join The Reckless Community! Jesus never tore anyone down to rebuild them in His image. Jesus did not gaslight. Jesus saw truth in every soul. --- Why do we feel the need to tear someone down in order to build them back up? THat is such an American mentality isn't it? Why preserve something original and beautiful when we can bulldoze it and build a highrise on it's grave? Who cares about preserving the individuality! For our 150th episode, we took a walk through nature (Sorry about the crunching sounds) and had an in depth talk about gaslighting within the Christian faith and how to properly perform the great commission. We discuss what it looks like to share the good news, how to show the love of Christ without stripping people of their unique identity, and how authority does not mean trust. --- JOIN THE COMMUNITY: If you'd like to keep the conversation going, we want to invite you, our reckless listeners, to join The Reckless Community! The Spiritual journey begins when we give ourselves permission to take the next step away from our past burdens. --- Welcome to 2021 and episode 149 of The Reckless Pursuit! It's time for new expectations, new goals, and a new episode! This week, we are talking about the power our minds have to dictate our emotions. We discuss how a new year is as good a time as any to choose to let go of our hurts and push into spiritual healthiness, as well as how it doesn't take a new year to make those mindset shifts. We also touch on where The Reckless Pursuit is heading as we move forward into 2021. We feel that for many of us, it is time to put one foot in front of the other so to speak. To begin furthering our spiritual journey. It does us well to annalize the baggage we once carried to learn what is necessary for our spirits and what is unnecessary weight but sooner or later we must lay it down and move away from it. To simply unload one's burdens does not help our journey if we do not then continue onward. --- JOIN THE COMMUNITY: If you'd like to keep the conversation going, we want to invite you, our reckless listeners, to join The Reckless Community! How did we find more of Christ in 2020? By looking deeper into ourselves and pursuing our God-Given Passions. --- 2020… whew. What a year and while 2021 doesnt mean we are out of the woods, it sure feels like a much-needed reset. But despite the seeming chaos befalling the globe, 2020 offered many of us a new perspective and a new way to view life. From the mindfulness of others to tangible things like working remotely or being on the front lines of necessity, we have learned to adapt and grow (well, kind of.) This week, we are taking a look back at 2020 and how our Spiritual Journey has progressed. We talk about how we found God by finding and understanding more of ourselves and how to lay down Spiritual Obligation. It's been a crazy, life-altering year but if we know where to look, there is much to be learned, more to be gained, and even more yet to find. Christmas doesn't have to be elaborate and you are not wrong for not feeling that Christmas magic. --- 2020 has been one crazy year and low and behold, it's already Christmas Week once again! It's come so quickly for a year that has dragged on… A lot of us have guilt wrapped up in the holidays. Maybe we feel as if we have to have over family but are cautious due to the fact that there is a global pandemic. If you are like Cody, there's a lot of pressure to muster up a certain feeling to make the holiday season seem fulfilled. Whatever this holiday brings you, we are here to tell you that the spirit of this season does not have to be exclusive to this season. You don't have to feel normal or be in the “Christmas spirit”. to claim Christianity isn't a mantra or title, it's a constant choice to exhibit the purest love above all else. Actions speak louder. --- There was a time that we wanted to know if someone proclaimed to be a Christian. It helped dictate how we felt about someone. But as time went on, we learned this was more idolizing a thought than truly loving Christ in someone else. This week is a quick episode on why actions speak louder than words. Our first goal isn't to figure out someone's religion but rather to see the spirit in which they operate. Oh, and to help shine the love of Christ their way. It's amazing how much easier it is to love your neighbor when there are fewer conditions to that love. --- JOIN THE COMMUNITY: If you'd like to keep the conversation going, we want to invite you, our reckless listeners, to join The Reckless Community! Burning bridges is seldom the best idea when it comes to maintaining relationships and progressing your life forward. --- Arson is rarely a good idea. This is true both in reality and metaphorically. Yet often our first reaction when moving from one point in life to another is to burn that previous bridge to a pile of ash. But what if we realized we made a wrong turn along the way? We hate making wring turns. Even more, we hate admitting when we made wrong turns. So often it's easier in life to cut off where we came from to prevent us from going back. I mean, in some instances that seems understandable. But when that means cutting off potentially healthy relationships, this ends up causing more harm than help. We like to use the analogy of a draw bridge. Sometimes the road needs to be closed to your kingdom but seldom do we want to destroy the path altogether. This week we are talking about boundaries, the spiritual journey, and how to maintain relationships even though we have moved on to a new horizon. We chat about when backtracking is needed, what the point of a spiritual drawbridge is, and how we can strive to protect our inner kingdom while maintaining a healthy relationship with both those of like mind and those who are still in a place you once called home. --- JOIN THE COMMUNITY: If you'd like to keep the conversation going, we want to invite you, our reckless listeners, to join The Reckless Community! All sin can be forgiven except for one, or so we have been told. But what even is this so-called Unpardonable Sin? And can we commit such an act? --- If you have spent any time in a traditional church you have probably heard a bit about the unpardonable or unforgivable sin. You know, that verse in Matthew where Jesus basically says that blasphemy gets you a one-way ticket to hellfire and you're basically screwed… But does it actually say that or are we just making stuff up? What does that verse actually mean? What's the context behind Jesus' message? How are we to know if we've already goofed up and are destined to be the next slow cooker meal in the underworld? This week we are talking about the unpardonable sin. We discuss current views held within the Christian faith, a bit of the background that brought this little encounter into the bible, to begin with, and our personal take on what this traumatizing fear verse means. Spoiler alert: We don't think it's fear-based at all. Quite the opposite actually! This episode gets deep and messy so strap in for a bumpy yet rewarding race to the depths of Christian theology. Spiritual Gluttony: The act of feeding upon those things that divide us rather than unify us. --- All across the United States this week, the dressing will be prepped, casseroles will be assembled, and turkeys will be basted and baked! Thanksgiving is back once again and even though gatherings will most likely be a bit smaller this year, it's still a time to express our gratitude for life and our love for one another. Oh and one more thing: a time to EAT! SO what better time than America's favorite food holiday to talk about gluttony! Now, just know we aren't here to discuss your eating habits and consumption levels. We'll let you handle that after you face yourself in the mirror that following Friday. But we are talking about Spiritual Gluttony. You know, Spiritual Gluttony. That feeling of needing to know one extra sermon or have just a couple more volunteers. Maybe the church altar call wasn't as “responsive” as you'd have hoped or maybe you just need to quit being a glutton for reasons to be angry by reading your cousin's tweets. If it robs you from love then it robs you from Christ and robs Christ from others. So let's come together (6 feet apart but together) and share in a nice, healthy time of love rather than junk that just makes us desperate for more divisiveness. --- JOIN THE COMMUNITY: If you'd like to keep the conversation going, we want to invite you, our reckless listeners, to join The Reckless Community! How we respond to life's inconveniences can create a God-filled joy and blessing or can conjure up anger and burden. --- Sometimes things don't go our way. Maybe we woke up on the wrong side of the bed. Maybe we slept through our AM alarm. Or it could be like what we just learned: that you lost the keys to your bike lick so your bikes are fastened to your camper when you intended to go for a ride. There are many instances in our daily lives that just don't go our way. Plans get changed. Intentions are left unmet. Sometimes life throws us curveballs but how we respond to these instances can tell us a lot about our faith. This week we are talking about how to not make mountains out of molehills. How to recognize what is actually a problem and what is merely an inconvenience. We talk about how our responses can create or rob us of our joy and how to find blessings in the midst of annoyance. Do we use our faith to open conversations up or close them down? Is faith a reason to talk or to end the discussion? --- We have all done it: used our faith as an excuse to end a conversation. Maybe the topic is messy. Maybe we feel as if the other party doesn't have a lick of reasoning in them. Maybe we just feel we are superior. But when is this a justifiable answer? This week, we are recording from the great Ouachita national forest. On a refreshing hike, Elaine poses the question, “is using your faith a justifiable end to a conversation”. Spoiler alert, most of the time it isn't! This isn't a conversation about putting yourself into negative situations or to feel as if you have to have all the answers. Quite the contrary! This is a tool to help us identify when we are truly at a loss in our understanding of what answer we feel is truth, how to not use our faith as a copout or a crutch, and how to identify the difference in a supernatural reliance on God, versus having a selfish dominant view of our faith and using it as a trump card (puns only minorly intended) --- JOIN THE COMMUNITY: If you'd like to keep the conversation going, we want to invite you, our reckless listeners, to join The Reckless Community! How should Christians vote? Are there Christian political parties? How do we get along with people who think differently!? --- It's almost election day. Time to rush to the polls! (Or hopefully, you turned in your mail-in ballots). This is that time of year where we get to rouse up all that tension and piss off those select family members right before we are forced to sit and have a big turkey dinner together. Man, this year has flown by. Every election cycle it becomes even more evident just how much our faith gets tied up in our politics. But why is that? And are we to understand other people's political choices when we are so busy trying to defend our own? This week we are talking about a Christian's guide to political parties. We discuss how a Christian can be a part of any political party, how most people actually desire the same things, and how like love and hate, different political parties are more alike than they are different. It is one of the most difficult asks we could give, but we ask of you this: This election season, please try to refrain from needless debates that just weaken your own mental health. Try to see people for what they are, a piece of God's glory with their own lenses they filter the world through. Astrology is sinful! Except, where does it say that in the Bible? Do Christians even realize what astrology is? --- People love the stars. We've looked to them for inspiration. We use them to tell time and direction. We even depend on them for our entire existence. Without stars, the night sky would look a lot less spectacular, and well, day wouldn't exist at all! There are so many parallels between Christ and the sun, angels and stars, and God with the heavens. Yet in spite of this, The stars have gotten a bad rap. In many circles, understanding the heavens has become less about seeing the image of Christ they contain and more about the fear of our assimilations. This week, we are wrapping up our October Halloween series talking about Biblical Astrology. We discuss why astrology has received such a bad reputation, how followers of God throughout history have actually used the stars as a predictor of things to come (wise men or revelation ring a bell?) and how reading the stars is not a sin, at least not in and of itself. Rather, it's not what we do but how we use it and to whom we try and see So, let's sit back and have a gaze at such a misunderstood topic this hallow-week. What does the Bible say about necromancy? What makes using “witchcraft” and performing a “Miracle” so different? --- Talking with ghosts, predicting the future, and raising folks from the dead; these are just a few things that the Bible strictly forbids…. Except when it doesn't? From praying to saints and asking forgiveness for those passed to summoning those who have long departed or just bringing them back all together, the Bible is full of events that seem to mimic the very things it forbids. But what is the difference? What makes a prophet different from a divinator? What separates necromancy from resurrection? How does one man making a rod turn into a snake not make him a sorcerer when all the others that did the same were? This week, we are talking about all things magic and what separates it from God. We discuss how all the power of God placed in creation can be harnessed in many different ways but “spoiler alert”, it all comes down to one's intent. God is our filter. Many of the things that are miracles can also be malicious if we have selfish ambition. Now, we are not encouraging you to go grab an ouija board, okay? Performing supernatural works is not a test of faith, but even more a test of intent. So before you light your torches and sharpen your pitchforks, we invite you to take a dive into this little journey through the magic of the Bible and learn a bit more about the divine “magic” all around us. --- JOIN THE COMMUNITY: If you'd like to keep the conversation going, we want to invite you, our reckless listeners, to join The Reckless Community! Halloween, Pokemon, Ouija Boards oh my! - Christians tend to fear what they don't understand and fear robs us of our authority in Christ. --- It's OCTOBER! If you have been listening to our podcast for any time at, you know what this means… A month of diving into the spookiest and craziest parts of Christianity! This week we are talking about the fear of the unknown and how fear can stifle our faith. Humans fear what we do not know. We've kind of done this since we have existed. I mean, all it takes is a sneaky snake and a little whisper that there is some knowledge hidden out of site and we demand to know what it is. After all, knowledge is power, right? And while this phrase can often be seen as humanity's downfall, there is some truth to it. THis isn't a gnostic gospel message but rather a call to try and understand before we react, sympathize before we rebuke, and shine the light on the shadows instead of making up tales of how they creep. So let's start off this halloween season on a serious note, but don't worry, the spooky stuff is just around the corner. Don't believe me? How can we truly live free from the unspoken expectations held against us by others and ourselves? --- Many times Christians hold themselves and have others hold a certain level of expectations that are simply not healthy. From relationships and community to our own desires, how do we quench those unspoken expectations? This week, we are talking with Kurtis Vanderpool: Author, Public Speaker, and Life Coach. We hear Kurtis' deconstruction journey and why he and many others continue down such a seemingly uncertain road despite the seeming uncertainty. Kurtis talks of what it means to live free of unspoken expectations and how the love of Christ draws an authentic community to us when we need it most. This week we talked about: • Pursuing Christ beyond the walls of the church • Relationships with past church members ofter deconstruction • Why one would leave the comfort of religion to chase Christ into the unknown • Allowing God to guide true community • Standing alongside others when they need support • “Living Free” GUEST INFO: Kurtis Vanderpool Life Coach, Best Selling Author, Speaker Many of us are born with incredible gifts just boiling up within us. The problem is, our churches and religious organizations don't always value those gifts. That's where I come in. Hi, I'm Kurtis and I help spiritual misfits like myself become powerful leaders in their own unique and life-giving way. Through regular content on my blog and podcast, as well as products, and one-on-one coaching, we are committed to raising up leaders that will guide God's people through great times of change and uncertainty, leaders just like you. Fall is upon us. The trees are beginning their transition from lush and thriving to reserved and docile. This season is a season of beauty, comfort, and echos the metaphors of creation. The earth begins to take her rest from a bountiful time of productiveness. She rests her feet and settles in to recoup, renew, and reemerge on the other side stronger than ever. This week we are talking about NOT growing. So often we are shamed (in every corner of our lives) for not growing. We are told that we need to bear more fruit. We need to prune back to produce more crops. It's a constant barrage of more. But everything needs a Sabbath, even our growth. Leviticus talks of how in the seventh year to stop working the vineyard and to cease pruning the plants. Just let them be. They need this time of rest. There is so much here we can learn from. So whether you were convinced you had to always be growing or have taken on guilt for being content, let this conversation serve as a reminder that in the right season, growing is the WRONG goal to strive for. We all have moments where we have to offer up a little grace, but how often do we extend that grace to ourselves? --- The spiritual journey is kind of like those gumball machines we used to use as a kid. You know the ones; you drop the quarter in and give the knob a turn and the little gumball falls out of the bin and spirals around and around until finally you can get your hand on it. Except in this analogy, we are the gumball… Sometimes we feel close to God. Other times we struggle to even believe the there is a God. But through it all, we MUST give ourselves grace. Grace is the thing that allows us to progress further down our journey. Think of that gumball again. Sure, there were ties it seemed out of view but it always circled back, this time a bit closer to you finally being able to grab ahold of it. It takes the back and forth, the spinning closer and farther away to draw closer to our objective. There's a reason Jesus always spoke in parables and if Christ is indeed God, it's not a far cry to assume parables are sewn into the fabric of creation. God wants us to find the beauty that is Him in every aspect of life. And He gives grace for us to enjoy that journey. So if God can give us grace, we have to learn to give ourselves grace as well. --- WEEKLY QUESTION/s: • What areas are triggering to bring back your previous beliefs and why? Sometimes we get bored with God. But is it boredom or lust for a new experience? --- Have you ever just been sitting in your same ole house and think to yourself, “What if I just sold everything and moved to a cabin in the woods?”. Or maybe you look at your walls and think to yourself just how desperately you want to know out that wall and open up the living room. No? Just us? Well, we do this same thing with our faith. Many of us were raised with the idea that we had to constantly be on the hunt for the next big God experience. We needed to go to the nicest conferences and hear the best teachers get our spiritual high. But once the mundane sets in, we are left dealing with a pile of spiritual wanderlust. This week, we take the conversation on the road with this installment of “Reckless on the Road”, where we talk about our innate desire for change and how that drives our relationship with Christ forward or drives it mad! We talk about how the grass being greener on the other side isn't always a good thing and that despite it being good and healthy to pursue our faith forward, let that not be an example of forcing things along too fast. --- JOIN THE COMMUNITY: If you'd like to keep the conversation going, we want to invite you, our reckless listeners, to join The Reckless Community! Matthew 12:35 - A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in him, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in him. --- Christianity has gotten a bit... hostile lately. But for what? What good does it do us to rebuke someone with differing beliefs, especially when those beliefs are secondary to the gospel? Does it matter if we don't believe in a literal lake of fire or thing old earth theory is more accurate? All of these things are secondary to loving God and loving others. This week we are continuing our talks about finding God in the stillness, but this time we are talking less about how to find God and more of how to show Him. Most of the time our conversations online (or elsewise) are geared towards exalting our own superiority complex and clout chasing instead of loving one another and exuberating Christ. So here's to hoping that this episode puts a bit of conviction on each one of us to examine our words closely before we spew them out. To analyze what is and is not Christ. To show and emit the love of Christ above the desire to fill our egos. But also remember, conviction and condemnation are not the same. It is hard to hear God in the midst of deafening noise. But we have the ability to choose what noise we allow in our headspace. --- Political propaganda got your mind in a fritz? COVID have you fearing for your life? What about racial injustice, catastrophic storms, recessions, or even your cousin who just doesn't get your opinions? God only knows how many different things are pulling for our attention. Sadly, we couldn't even ask Him ourselves since we can't seem to find our way out from all the mud. This week we are talking about the many different things trying to rob us of our oneness with Christ (Spirit). This conversation is a great continuation of last week's conversation about reacting versus responding. Now we are going a bit deeper and discussing how this high energy season is designed to rob us of our joy, sanity, and understanding all the while pinning us against each other strategically to silence the still, small voice. In order to experience true spiritual freedom we have to be willing to unplug from the chaos, realize our anxiousness is not the solution to any problem, and allow God to fill our headspace to a greater capacity than any news cycle or argument online could ever achieve. --- If you'd like to keep the conversation going, we want to invite you, our reckless listeners, to join The Reckless Community! It hurts to be rejected by someone else. But what hurts worse is rejecting who you are. --- Despite sounding similar, reacting and responding is not the same thing. A reaction is more irrational. It is primal and full of emotion but a response is thought out and more open. Both of these have their place but we often mix up which to use when. We should spend less time reacting to other people's experiences and more time responding to learn and grow in love. When we react towards someone we often end up pushing someone further into the very thing that garnered our reaction in the first place. Reacting is picking up the stone to beat the adulterous woman, responding is to tell her no one here is going to bring her harm, now learn from this experience. This week we are talking about cancel culture, being true to yourself, and using disagreements as an opportunity to create conversation and grow. It is easy to try and silence someone's voice but true wisdom is realizing you too can learn from other's perspectives and have a positive interaction despite their position. Oh and side note: just because someone reacts towards you does not mean you have to fuel the fire by reacting to them. Trust us, rejecting yourself by stooping to such a level is a far worse punishment than the rejection you feel from their reaction against you. Sex Culture vs Purity Culture: Two supposed opposites that inadvertently create each other. But two wrongs don't make a right. --- Everything is permissible. But is everything beneficial? If everything is black and white, is there ever any grey area and what can we learn from standing in the middle? This week, we are talking about recent events in pop culture and why polarizing views can cause a lot of grief. We talk about why extreme perspectives on either side of the fence can be destructive, the deeper meaning behind current sex culture, and why we need to be mindful of what we are teaching the younger generations to come. When we peel back the curtain, we find that there are often deeper meanings behind our actions. So what influences these decisions and how can we learn from our past experiences? Listen to this week's episode here: https://therecklesspursuit.com/episode128 There is power in a name. A name can identify who you are. It can give you direction. But it can also hold you back. --- There's a lot of authority in a name. Throughout the Bible, God used a good name change to redirect someone's life to help them push into their truer selves. Names carry authority and can push you forward, but a name you have outgrown can hold you back. This week, Elaine is sharing how she has decided to retire her previous platform named “The Prodigal Daughter” in favor of a new name that carries to her, a deeper and more fulfilling meaning, “Spirituality Untamed”. She shares how she invested over 6 years into The Prodigal Daughter and how she feels God leading her beyond the old name and into something fresh and new. But this episode isn't just a promotion, this episode can help us move beyond the containers we place ourselves in. This conversation is about breaking free from old identities that no longer ring true to who we are: Whether that be s physical identifier like a name or more of a mindset. Either way, progress can be made or broken with something as simple as a name. --- THE PRODIGAL DAUGHTER - SOON TO BE SPIRITUALITY UNTAMED! What do Walmart, the Holy Spirit, Clones, Protesters, and a shopping cart with a go-pro all have in common? They all were a part of a strangely spiritual experience we recently had. --- It's easy to get cynical against things we have commonly talked about in church. It is also easy for us to get caught up obsessing over something so much that it loses its flavor. Both of these tend to be the extremes we lean towards when dealing with hearing the voice or listening to the spirit of God. So many times we used to walk away from church feeling like we either A: had a great service because the music was right, the songs were on key, and the emotional tension was as thick as morning fog after a rainy night, or B: Felt like God was so far away because we weren't really into it today. This is because we oversaturate our God-time with experiences. Just like how we overconsume sugar, we become numb to the spiritual moments around us because we can no longer taste the subtleties of God in the more mundane moments. This week we set out to talk about changing life experiences and spiritual growth but soon found ourselves deep in the conversation of listening to God and the validity of discernment. We talk about spiritual warfare, spiritual atmosphere, and picking up on the subtle cues God has given us the ability to detect. This is a wacky and wild episode that we are convinced will help you understand you're connecting to Christ in a new way no matter what side of the church wold you currently sit on. --- JOIN THE COMMUNITY: If you'd like to keep the conversation going, we want to invite you, our reckless listeners, to join The Reckless Community! Did you know social distancing is effective online at preventing the spread of anger, frustration, and an overall crappy day? --- Social Distancing is the buzzword of 2020. We should all be aware by now how standing a bit further apart and limiting large gatherings helps reduce the spread of harmful diseases. But with so many people turning to social media to get their daily fix, the atmosphere online has gotten pretty smoggy, to say the least. Add in a looming election and it doesn't take long to end up in a screaming match via the world wide web. This is why we here at The Reckless Pursuit advise a good, healthy dose of social distancing online as well! It's amazing how a little time off Facebook changes how you can view those friends who currently just don't see eye to eye. The amount of peace and joy that can come up in us when we don't feel like we have to constantly be on guard is more needed, especially now, than we probably even realize. This episode, we took a walk around our campsite and just dumped our feelings in a quick debriefing on why we feel getting off or limiting social media can be a life-giving thing amidst such a politically polarized and otherwise intense time. Yes, everyone's voice matters, but why waist that voice on those who's ears are not yet ready to hear? What can Christians learn from reading the Tao Te Ching? And how can this writing assist us in deconstruction? --- It is truly amazing how the more we begin to study other religions, spiritual practices, and philosophies, how much of what they teach begins to overlap with the teachings of Christ. And as we begin to go through or progress further down our spiritual journey, picking up these little nuggets of wisdom help to teach us the truths of God's creation in a whole new way. Sometimes, when we hear a philosophy taught in a different light it helps us understand these universal truths in a new way. This week, Corey Farr, host of the podcast, “A Christian Reads the Tao Te Ching” joins us to share an introduction into what he has learned as he has explored Taoism, as well as how we can apply some of these truths to our walk with Christ. Corey has taken the time to pan through numerous translations to offer up his perspective of these truths and shares how by finding, reading, and studying the Tao Te Ching, his relationship and faith in Christ have grown stronger. --- This week we talked about: * The Parallels between Christianity and the Tao The Ching (sp) * Hearing from God * The Non Dualistic thinking of life * holding your desires “loosely” * cataphatic vs apophatic theology * Realizing that you cannot control your circumstances, only how you react to them * striving for a presence of peace by being mentally present GUEST INFO: Correy Farr: I'm a seminary graduate, a Christian Anarchist, a writer, a poet, a songwriter, and a wannabe author. Prayer isn't a magical fix to a situation but it is a great tool to help get us in the right headspace. --- Have you ever prayed for God's protection? Maybe you have asked for guidance or wisdom? Have you ever felt as if that prayer wasn't answered? Many of us have been taught that God “sometimes doesn't answer our prayers because He has something better in mind”. Or “God knows what we need more than we do” so he blatantly ignores our requests. And while there very well may be some kind of truth to God knowing best and such, that just seems like a cute way to gloss over a glaring hole in our theology. This week, we had a super short but impactful conversation about what prayer is, God answering prayers, wisdom, guidance, and not dying from carbon monoxide. No, seriously. It's much easier to claim we are healed from our past wounds than it is to actually deal with them. --- So you have some church hurt or spiritual abuse? How are you going to recover?
