Why does Jesus use parables to teach? Why do we love and relate so well to allegory? What's the reason behind our love for stories? --- There once was a listener who opened their podcast app to see what was new. Upon the realization that The Reckless Pursuit had a new episode, they took a look to see what it was about. To be quite honest, the title intrigued them so much that they clicked and had to take for themselves a listen. (Hey, I think this is talking about you…) People love a good story. We draw connections, dig into deeper meanings, and tear apart plots and narratives to gather what life lessons we can carry away from them. We love to hear of the past; to reminisce on things that once were while drawing comparisons to how nothing has really changed. Stories are beautiful, terrifying, and the parables and allegory they contain shake us to our core and alter how we choose to exist on this big rock. What if I told you that parables were more than just life lessons? What if I told you that parables are in reality, how God experiences His own constructs? Without us, the body, hands, and feet, there would only be ideas and no way for God to even comprehend the very thing He strategically planned. As an architect can envision a project by its blueprints, so did God build this place with the intention of seeing the divine reality play out in a tangible way. It's all quite beautiful really, even if it is only a metaphor. --- JOIN THE COMMUNITY: If you'd like to keep the conversation going, we want to invite you, our reckless listeners, to join The Reckless Community! The Spiritual journey begins when we give ourselves permission to take the next step away from our past burdens. --- Welcome to 2021 and episode 149 of The Reckless Pursuit! It's time for new expectations, new goals, and a new episode! This week, we are talking about the power our minds have to dictate our emotions. We discuss how a new year is as good a time as any to choose to let go of our hurts and push into spiritual healthiness, as well as how it doesn't take a new year to make those mindset shifts. We also touch on where The Reckless Pursuit is heading as we move forward into 2021. We feel that for many of us, it is time to put one foot in front of the other so to speak. To begin furthering our spiritual journey. It does us well to annalize the baggage we once carried to learn what is necessary for our spirits and what is unnecessary weight but sooner or later we must lay it down and move away from it. To simply unload one's burdens does not help our journey if we do not then continue onward. --- JOIN THE COMMUNITY: If you'd like to keep the conversation going, we want to invite you, our reckless listeners, to join The Reckless Community! Did you know social distancing is effective online at preventing the spread of anger, frustration, and an overall crappy day? --- Social Distancing is the buzzword of 2020. We should all be aware by now how standing a bit further apart and limiting large gatherings helps reduce the spread of harmful diseases. But with so many people turning to social media to get their daily fix, the atmosphere online has gotten pretty smoggy, to say the least. Add in a looming election and it doesn't take long to end up in a screaming match via the world wide web. This is why we here at The Reckless Pursuit advise a good, healthy dose of social distancing online as well! It's amazing how a little time off Facebook changes how you can view those friends who currently just don't see eye to eye. The amount of peace and joy that can come up in us when we don't feel like we have to constantly be on guard is more needed, especially now, than we probably even realize. This episode, we took a walk around our campsite and just dumped our feelings in a quick debriefing on why we feel getting off or limiting social media can be a life-giving thing amidst such a politically polarized and otherwise intense time. Yes, everyone's voice matters, but why waist that voice on those who's ears are not yet ready to hear? Sometimes it's good to straddle the fence because from there you can see both sides of the story to try and find unity. --- The Reckless Pursuit has come under fire on more than one occasion for not choosing sides. We make it our goal to attempt and see different angles of each story. Our desire is for unity and we believe that the only way to achieve that is to understand the heart behind each person beyond their thoughts and indoctrinations. This week, we are talking about the dangers of collectivism and giving our reason for why it is actually good to straddle the fence. Now sure, there are times you have to take action. One cannot live in the middle all the time, but if more people put forth the effort to understand someone else's heart desire, we truly believe unity would be closer to our grasp. This week we talked about: * Collectivism * Like-Minded vs Like-Hearted * Remaining centered despite the circumstances * Confirmation Bias * Racism and Seeing differences as threats * Damage caused by group judgment * Seeing the God in each person * Digging past thoughts to find the heart behind each person * People speaking from a place of hurt * The difference in having a thought vs having an identity * Overcoming shame with growth * There are no bad people, just people who are more hurt than others. * Seeing the heart in someone's message --- RESOURCES: Listen to 30 Thoughts Till Dawn, a new, instrumental album created by Cody: http://brailleatlas.com/30thoughts --- JOIN THE COMMUNITY: If you'd like to keep the conversation going, we want to invite you, our reckless listeners, to join The Reckless Community! What does it mean to be brave? How do you define bravery? This topic is something that I have really been leaning into the past couple of weeks. It's even the tagline for my other podcast, The Reckless Pursuit, “Be Brave, Be Bold, & Be Reckless”. But what's so interesting to me is that we often talk about being brave but when we look deeper, we all seem to have a different definition. This week, I am exploring the idea of what it means to truly exercise bravery. When I looked to my friends list on FB and asked them the question, “what does bravery look like to you?”, I found all kinds of acts of bravery. And if you ask me, despite the differences in opinion, i would say that every single person was correct in their definition. Does God answer our prayers? Is He good all the time? What is the difference in mindset and petitioning prayer? This week we are wrapping up our series on prayer with the second half of our conversation with Kyle Butler. This episode is one of our most loaded episodes to date! Just take a look at that topic list below and you'll see just how many great thoughts are worked into just ¾ of an hour. We dove deep into prayer. Kyle shares an intense yet heartfelt story of unanswered prayer and we take a long, hard look at how mindset and prayer work together. We discuss why prayer in its stereotypical sense is lacking in any real power. Then, we begin to uncover how Jesus never actually prayed for healing for any of those he healed. This episode might make you a bit uncomfortable. We hit the ground running at full speed and it never slows down but if you stick it out, we truly believe this can revolutionize our prayer life, our faith, and our understanding of healings/abundance if we put it into practice. This week we talked about: * Religious prayers * What power does God have through prayer? * Does God need our prayer? * Does God need permission? * How much belief does it take to have a prayer answered? * The product of our thought life * Merging thoughts and feelings * Vilianizing our thoughts * What does God's voice sound like? * Praying “like Jesus” * Disconnecting from a religious mindset * The connection of thought and prayer * The power of prayer is breaking mindsets --- GUEST INFO: Kyle Butler: Reaching and Teaching about God's unconditional love and unlimited grace for all. Why is thinking good? Why should we learn to question our faith/teachings/beliefs? Many places deem free thought as dangerous. Some churches have shunned the idea of asking questions or rebuked the notion that one can believe something a bit differently. Problems arise when people step out of line but only for the systems that feed on keeping us contained. Does all this sound a bit like the Matrix? Surely the world/religion/media isn't that controlling, right? Sadly, it's true. Everyone is fighting to influence your mind to fit their agenda. Not everyone has bad intentions but when we give up our right to think, we give up our freedom to decide. This is why from the moment we met this week's guest, Kyle Butler, we knew we had to hear his voice on the show. Kyle does an amazing job of showing people that thinking is good. There is no “them”, there is only us. Deviciveness is not what God intended for creation. Have you ever heard a sermon about how the big bad world is out to get you? Maybe you had a family member tell you how certain people are your enemy. Perhaps you have been hurt by someone and now certain things trigger you or cause you to push people away. No matter the cause, divisiveness is one of the worst things that wreak havoc on our minds. We were created for community but division isolates us from each other which in turn isolates us from God. This week we are talking about how to discover our triggers and overcome them so we can be in unity with each other. We discuss what triggers look and feel like, what causes them to take root in our minds, and how to disarm them. People are never the enemy and while healthy boundaries are good, unhealthy boundaries can hold us back. This episode is challenging but together, we can be brave. This week we talked about: * How to notice divisive thoughts and what triggers them * Personal convictions * The us vs them mentality * Is there such a thing as a baby Christian? * Allowing yourself to be put in someone else's shoes * The unreliability of first impressions * No one is an unworthy vessel * Reactionary projection of our flaws on others * How pushing something away often causes us to dwell more on it * Shifting your thoughts from a negative frame to a positive frame --- JOIN THE COMMUNITY: If you'd like to keep the conversation going, we want to invite you, our reckless listeners, to join The Reckless Community! Experiencing the love of Jesus isn't always what we claim it is in church. It's not a worship service, a fuzzy feeling, or a strung together set of songs. Experiencing the true love of God goes deeper and is intensely more personal. This week, we are talking with Jason Elam, host of the Messy Spirituality podcast about his journey through deconstruction after spending years as a pastor, missionary, and evangelist. Jason was “that guy” who other pastors called in to straighten out a church that was asking too many questions. But one day he had an encounter with a God he didn't recognize through all the layers of religiosity he had been attempting to view God through. God is bigger than our box, bolder than our attempts to define Him, and way less religious than most of those who claim His name. When we allow our minds to venture out a bit further from our preconceived notions, we begin to experience a deeper love then we could ever have witnessed from the shoreline. This week we are talking about: * Experiencing the love of God in a new way * Encountering God beyond the ways we have always been taught * Coming to a place of grace for those who do not believe the same as you * What constitutes church --- GUEST INFO: Jason Elam is Brandi's grateful husband, proud dad of 4 awesome kids, a former professional wrestler and radio broadcaster, and former pastor for over 20 years. He currently oversees The Hope Center, a community resource center serving one of Alabama's poorest communities, and hosts The Messy Spirituality Podcast. How can you make God an idol? What does it mean to worship the idea of God more than God His/Herself? Whos image of God do you look to when you worship? Have you ever taken any time to look at a portrait of someone else? Take the Mona-Lisa as an example. While it's true that without that painting none of us would even know who this was, it still doesn't really tell us much about her. As a matter of fact, we have no idea of what makes her, her at all! How often do we do this very thing with God? We spend our time looking at other people's portrayals of God and craft for ourselves an idol out of their revelation. But that leaves us complacent without learning who God is to us uniquely. There is no relationship with a painting, no depth to who was originally depicted beyond the scene portrayed. We can spend our time looking to other people, church, systems, and even our own works but it is all in vain if we do not take the tie to get to know who God is to us. It's time to quit committing idolatry with an idea of God. This week we talked about: * Making an idea of God into an idol * Fears of certain practices as being Godless * The dangers of idolizing the church * God versus systems * Making an idol out of someone else's understanding of God * Making an idol out of working for God * Making yourself an idol to others instead of allowing them to come to God on their own * The simplicity of having a relationship with God --- RESOURCES: Check out our new merch: https://therecklesspursuit.com/merch --- JOIN THE COMMUNITY: If you'd like to keep the conversation going, we want to invite you, our reckless listeners, to join The Reckless Community! Does God care more about how you love people or how you love him? In Matthew 19 we find the familiar story of the rich young ruler. So often we hear it taught how we need to abandon our possessions and follow Christ or how our love for things will keep us from heaven. (Camel and a needle anybody?) But what if Jesus wasn't saying that at all? No, what if Jesus was more concerned with how this man treated the creation more so than the creator? This week we are talking about how to truly love God, we must first love people. We discuss what it means to put effort behind your prayer, to be present with someone despite their beliefs, and what it means to intercede. We also discuss how we so often group certain socioeconomic classes of people together instead of seeing individuals as unique creations of God. Showing the love of Christ is so much more than preaching at someone. It is being present and giving someone a piece of yourself to exhibit an aspect of GOd's love they could only receive through you. After all, being present is the best present you could ever give. This week we talked about: * Story of the rich young ruler - Matthew 19:16 * Loving God by loving your fellow man * God's value in loving humanity * Showing love without preaching * Prayer AND being present with people * Finding God in humanity * Understanding God's love through unique relationships --- RESOURCES: Check out our brand new line of TRP merch at: https://cedartemple.com/product-category/therecklesspursuit/ --- WEEKLY QUESTION/s: • Do you want to be a person filling someone else up or the reason they are empty? Sexual abuse has been a hot topic this year, but its so much more than just a church debate. There are real people with real trauma who want more than anything to be able to share their stories, to help others, to heal, and to be heard. The Christian community has been silent long enough. Its time to give victims of sexual abuse a voice and allow them to be heard. This week, we are talking with Mary DeMuth, author of We Too. Mary is an abuse survivor turned advocate for those who have been sexually abused. She has a heart to see the church unite in an uprising to help those who have been victimized as well as to help educate us on this pressing issue. This week we talked about: Sexual abuse Finding your victory through trauma SBC allegations Complementarianism vs Egalitarianism When to leave church after abuse Community as a part of your healing Mental shifts that takes place within an abuse survivor Why did God allow bad things to happen Healing better together pornography and sex culture's attribution toward sexual abuse allowing room for forgiveness when the time is right GUEST INFO: If you met Mary DeMuth today, her joy might confuse you. Who she has become in light of tragedy is a testimony of Jesus's ability to transform a broken life. A child of three divorces, a victim of repeated sexual assault at five-years old, with a father who died when she was ten, Mary wanted to end her life in her teens. In the tenth grade, she heard about Jesus, and she knew she wanted to chase after Him for the rest of her life. Thankfully, He chased her. Mary is the author of forty books, including her latest: We Too: How the Church Can Respond Redemptively to the Sexual Abuse Crisis (Harvest House 2019). She has spoken around the world about God's ability to transform a life, bringing needed freedom to her audiences. She's been on CNN and featured in The Washington Post, and she's spoken in Munich, Johannesburg, Port au Prince, Geneva and Monte Carlo, and planted a church with her family in southern France. Her best work? Being a mom to three amazing young adults and the wife of 28 years to Patrick. Vick, Author of “The Renewing of Your Mind”. Todd shares about how we can remap our brains to get in sync with God, how traditions and religion have caused us to lose sight of what a relationship with God looks like, and what a renewed mind looks like. Todd also shares about his deconstruction as a pastor and how it birthed the idea for his book. Now, Todd is on a reconstruction journey. The church might look a bit different but he has a new, fresh perspective on who God is and how to align with Him. What does it mean to celebrate Halloween with purpose? How can you bring purpose into a holiday? To some this day in all candy and costumes, yet to others it is all demons and devil worship. But what if we told you it was actually all in your intent? This week, Austin Fletcher is back on the show and he is bringing a very unique perspective to the table. As someone who deals in both Christianity and New age, Austin can see both good and bad intention in something and helps us understand that like most things, the value of our celebrations come down to our intent. But this week we talked about so much more than just Halloween. We rabbit trailed off into how to revive the local church, personal conviction, and so much more. Christians and superstition go together like ham and eggs or a pb&j. For some reason, we are drawn to the idea that there are big and bad things that are waiting to overtake us. We cling to the idea that evil is a lion and blend it with the metaphor that we are nothing but sheep. But what if our superstitions actually GAVE power to the very things we fear? That is exactly what we are discussing this week. The truth that our mindset is what empowers an action. From Ouija Boards to curses and hexes,we talk about all things deemed impure by most Christian standards. We create our atmosphere. Don't let the fear of the unknown overpower a GOd that is bigger than creation. Paganism and Christianity, living harmoniously together. Each one drawing from the other. But does this even make sense? How can two things that are so different exist side-by-side? Or are they so very different after all? This week we are talking with Jeremy and Irena Warriner. Jeremy grew up in the methodist church but neglected his faith as he grew older and went off to college. But when he accidentally attended a ceremony put on by witches, he found that old spark again. Tragically, Jeremy lost his legs in an automobile accident and was placed in a medically induced coma for 6 weeks. It was during this time he had a spiritual awakening and realized just how similar so many religions actually are. Irena grew up in a conservative, patriarchal Christian atmosphere. After getting pregnant at 18, her church shunned her and cast her out. She soon married but was treated more like an item and less as a human. Due to his dogmatic upbringing, he attempted to silence Irena's voice in the name of his faith. Luckily, Irena found her place with a local earth-based religious group. Now she is a priestess in the Temple of Ascension and a practicing committee member of their local Christian church. This is a beautiful story of two people coming together to understand God in a deeper way. We invite you to come and allow any superstition to fall off as we get to know both of these amazing people better. Red and yellow, black and white, they are precious in His sight. Straight or gay, trans or Bi, God is love and love is kind. We have done a terrible job at the greatest commandment. We have turned our backs on and cast out those who dress different, have a different skin color, or who love in a unique way. We have taken a few scriptures and used them as a weapon against our fellow brothers and sisters. Some might say it is “calling out sin”. Others may argue “they are accepted but not affirmed”. But every single person needs emotional support. How? By listening and learning to see past someone's sexual orientation into the heart of the created being, just as God does. This week, David Hayward, “The Naked Pastor” is back to talk about how to love and listen to those who we have deemed as outcasts or unloveable. We discuss different sexual orientations, gender identities, and even skin tones and religions. David shares his story and how he came from a Pentecostal upbringing to realizing that God is an inclusive God who looks deeper than our surface: He looks at the heart. --- GUEST INFO: David was baptized Anglican as a baby, came to faith in a Baptist church when he was a teenager, changed to Pentecostal in his late teens, married another Pentecostal named Lisa, was ordained Presbyterian, pastored a Vineyard church, went Independent, and planted others. In 2010 he left the professional paid clergy after almost 30 years of ministry. Is there a literal Hell? Is it a lake of fire that never goes out? Is eternal torment really God's way of handling people who refuse to accept Christ? Doesn't that seem a bit harsh? Where did this whole idea even come from? Is hell in the bible or did we just make all this crap up? This week we are talking with Matthew Challenor. Matthew was born and raised in a Baptist household but once he reached his early twenties, walked away from the church. After a spiritual encounter, he found his way back as a follower of Christ but then ended up in the hospital with what everyone believed was a heart attack. After some extensive testing, Matthew was diagnosed with extreme stress and this, along with some already pressing questions lead him into deconstruction. The pressures of living up to God's supposed standard were replaced with an understanding of God's love. One of the areas Matthew found himself deconstructing was Hell. The idea that a good God would send people into a pit of eternal torment didn't seem to add up according to God's character. So Matthew began researching where the idea of hell came from and where we misconstrued it along the way. What if you commit the “unpardonable sin”? This week, we are talking about what sin is and how to overcome the fear of it. Sin is less an action and more a mindset. If you constantly focus on what you have done wrong you will inadvertently trap yourself in that mental state. NAC's goal is to generate an identity (of sorts) the people can rally around. In creating this identity, one of the things that we value is the fact that no one person or group of people should be the ones to define it. That's why we will be adding BONUS episodes into our podcast lineup as we develop more relationships with other groups that are on the same journey. We're not sure where this will take things, but we know you'll enjoy hearing from other people who see things in a complimentary way to you. This episode was an interview that Austin Fletcher did with Cody an Elaine of The Reckless Pursuit. They are an awesome couple and we're really excited to share their stuff with the NAC community. Check out their site at https://therecklesspursuit.com and their Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/therecklesspursuitpodcast/. Have you ever felt like what you were taught about faith was based more on a list of what not to do more than a freedom you feel Christ offers? Or have you ever wondered why we preach sermons of fear more than sermons about overcoming? If so, you are not alone! This week, we are talking with Austin Fletcher, host of New Age Christianity. We are discussing the freedom of true spirituality versus the controlling fear religion can lead to. Whether you realize it or not, God has set us free from sin nature and law. Austin shares with us his life mantra of trying to live by the verse which states “Everything is permissible”. Most of the time, our first reaction would be to quickly try to finish the second half of the verse but let it sink in: Everything is in fact permissible. Sure, there are things we should not dabble in. This is not an excuse to justify sin. But when you are living according to the Spirit our desire falls in line with God's purpose. It's been over a year since we have done an episode on this very topic and this time, we brought the guy who created the podcast about it! We have entered into a new age of Christianity so let's explore what God is offering up. Austin's words are strong and can challenge us but let them sink in. Is the Bible Literal? Is the Bible literal? Should the Bible be taken literally or figuratively? Are those stories we read really events that happened? So many questions! And the more you read, the more questions you come up with! We view God through layers of distorted lenses we have picked up over the course of our lives. This week we are talking about how to unlearn what we think we know about God. We discuss how when reading the bible, often times we unknowingly lean on the information we have already been taught. This leads to confirmation bias and robs us of gaining a newer, deeper, or even more truthful understanding of scripture. We view God through layers of distorted lenses we have picked up over the course of our lives. Judaism is a religion that thrives on personal understanding and contemplative thought around their scripture. Sadly, we are a culture of Black and White thinking and we have carried the mentality into our religion. When we realize that most of what we read was much more open to interpretation, it unlocks a level of Spiritual life that is so far beyond what we limit ourselves to. Don't believe us? Then just how do you think we created so many different translations from the same original texts? --- RESOURCES: Itinerant: biblical History Beyond the Bible - http://itinerantpodcast.com --- WEEKLY QUESTION/s: • What is something you have been taught about God that does not line up with what you have seen? On July 12th, 2018 Delena Carol Johnston, Cody's mother passed away. Now one year later we are revisiting the topic of grief as it has sifted through the sands of time. Dealing with grief is a process. It takes time to unpack all the emotions: anger, resentment, sorrow, and acceptance. It is normal and healthy to feel emotions. But what is not healthy is to bottle them up. This week, we are talking about how to find beauty in the midst of sadness. This episode is a bit less structured. There was not any premeditated thought but rather raw feelings and emotion to be as honest and transparent as possible. People fear pain and death. Obviously, no one wants to experience negative emotions or loss. But even in the bad, there is good that can spring forth from it. We give real-life examples of this, as well as sharing a few takeaways we learned from our loss and how to embrace every moment this gift of life has. We hope that in this we can shed a bit of light on those dark parts of life to help out anyone who might be feeling lost. There are laughs and tears a-plenty so grab a tissue box and settle in. Is God inclusive? If so, why does Christianity seem so exclusive? With groups like the LGBTQ+ showing love so freely why is a belief based on a God who created everyone so unaccepting and worse, unloving of so many people? This week we tackle the topic, “Is God inclusive?”. We talk about how fear is a driving factor to the church's exclusivity and we have divided ourselves off from the rest of God's creation. We also talk about the downsides of evangelicalism and the uprising of the ex-vangelical movement. We have become so focussed on what people are doing wrong that it seems we have often lost the ability to see what is good and right in people. At one point the church feared those who are wolves. DETAILS: What purpose do denominations serve? Do they help unite us? Do they divide us? Can they help us grow or do they lead to isolation? And what's the deal with house churches!? - This week, we are talking about denominations and how they affect believers: from long time practitioners to those who just started their walk. We talk about the stigmas many denominations hold. We discuss the rise of non denominational churches and how though they might have more freedom, that freedom can also cause an imbalance. And we even discuss house churches and recent allegations claiming that they are “wound licking” clubs and against the bible. --- DEFINITION: de·nom·i·na·tion: /dəˌnäməˈnāSH(ə)n/ - a recognized autonomous branch of the Christian Church. --- WEEKLY QUESTION/s: • How can we better look past our differences and find our similarities in Christ? DETAILS: No one can do it all alone. We are created with a desire for community just as Christ desired to commune with creation. This week, Cody is behind the mic talking about how people need people. We talk about forgiveness, boundaries, offering someone a shoulder to cry on, an ear to listen, and giving people the space to grow. We also talk about how when we make right our convictions it prevents shame and condemnation from having room to grow.
