In this interview with BizNews, Roy Jankielsohn, the Democratic Alliance (DA) leader in the Free State, gives an update on political developments in the province. He expresses the hope that with the arrest - and impending extradition from the US - of Ace Magashule's former PA, that there will be convictions for corruption. He also details the findings of a Public Protector's report into the R6-million funeral for an MEC, in which a cap on State funerals is recommended. Another cause for optimism is the way national political developments have impacted the province's politics where, for the first time since 1994, opposition parties have received chairpersonships of committees within the Free State Legislature. However, a huge concern remains cross-border crime, including human trafficking , drug smuggling, cattle rustling, and vehicle smuggling. But Jankielsohn has faith that the appointment of crime fighter Ian Cameron as Chair of the Portfolio Committee on Police in Parliament, will lead to improvements in law enforcement.
A US court has granted permission for Moroadi Cholota, the former assistant to former Free State premier Ace Magashule, to be extradited to South Africa. Cholota faces corruption charges connected to a R255 million asbestos contract. The court determined there was sufficient evidence against her and confirmed that the extradition treaty between the US and South Africa is applicable. Reneilwe Morema reports on a leaked Whatsapp conversation between ANC General Secretary Fikile Mbalula and Musician Papa Penny. In the leaked Whatsapp conversation, Fikile Mbalula threatens Papa Penny from performing at an MK rally in Soweto. Papa Penny said he doesn't take these threats lightly, and his resignation stems from years of being mistreated by the ruling party, and these recent threats are just the icing on the cake. This is not the first time Mbalula threatens an artist, he once threatened Kwaito Star for branding his phalanx vehicles in ANC colours in support of dismissed former ANC secretary Ace Magashule. It seems the ANC is hellbent in staying in power, even if it means threatening and bullying it's citizens. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/africandiasporanews/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/africandiasporanews/support

In a wide-ranging conversation with ‘Sunday Times Politics Weekly', EFF leader Julius Malema shared his views on the upcoming elections, and possible coalition permutations. Malema says he won't join any coalition in which Cyril Ramaphosa or John Steenhuisen are potential presidents. However, he did speak of his willingness to work with deputy president, Paul Mashatile, whom he acknowledged he had a soft spot for. Malema also addressed the willingness of the party to accept former ANC secretary-general Ace Magashule who, like himself, had been expelled from the party. Malema also reflected among other things on: the party's overall growth ahead of their 10 anniversary celebrations in July, his stance on the impending visit by Russian President Vladimir Putin, the recent passing of the NHI Bill, corruption allegations levelled against him, his past actions and their impact on how the public see him, and the party's views of the commemoration of Youth Day in the present day. In this gripping interview, the Democratic Alliance's provincial leader, Roy Jankielsohn, exposes how state capture was “perfected” in the Free State under former premier Ace Magashule. In a wide-ranging conversation with ‘Sunday Times Politics Weekly', ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula speaks on the ANC, his predecessor Ace Magashule who faces possible expulsion from the party, and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Mbalula reflected on his tenure as party SG and assessed the ruling party under the leadership of President Cyril Ramaphosa. He said voter frustration gave him the impression support for the ruling party could be as low as 30% ahead of next year's general elections, but says the party has not discussed coalitions. The episode is hosted by Sunday Times reporter Kgothatso Madisa, and produced by Bulelani Nonyukela.
Linda van Tilburg interviewed political analyst Dr Piet Croucamp about his take on the 55th ANC elective conference and reports on an interesting angle: the party is so divided and perceived as so untrustworthy by many South Africans that it may be lucky even to garner 50% of the votes in the 2024 national election. Given that realisation, ANC stalwarts realise that Ramaphosa will still be their best bet to try to prop up the ailing structure – but the threat from the alienated RET faction and Ace Magashule still remains. As investors gather for a third round of fund-raising for the country, the President faces a fightback as ANC secretary general Ace Magashule is charged. But does Ace really have the firepower to hurt Ramaphosa and what is the Ramaphosa camp doing to counter the propaganda effect of the Magashule trial afforded him by television channels? How likely is it that Jacob Zuma all ever give evidence to Raymond Zondo and why does the president leave Bheki Cele in charge of the police when he is clearly so unsuited to the job.
