The taxi strike that brought eThekwini to a standstill is over. Taxis are back on the roads today after Durban taxi operators and KZN transport officials reached an agreement late last night. Yesterday, thousands of commuters were stranded as operators joined the South African National Taxi Council, SANTACO's call for a stay-away over delays in issuing operating licenses and the impounding of taxis. Elvis Presslin spoke to KZN Transport MEC Siboniso Duma
KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) residents are facing widespread disruption as the ongoing taxi strike, led by the South African National Taxi Council (Santaco), continues to paralyze transport across the province. The strike, which began in the eThekwini metro area, has left thousands of commuters stranded, businesses short-staffed, and schools struggling with low attendance. The heart of the dispute lies in grievances between the taxi industry, the eThekwini municipality, and the Provincial Department of Transport. Key issues include the attachment of operating licenses, the review of impounded vehicles, and the need for updated data on taxi routes. As negotiations stretch into their second day, there is cautious optimism for a resolution. In an exclusive interview, Sifiso Shangase, KwaZulu-Natal spokesperson for Santaco, emphasized the industry's willingness to find common ground. “When we go into negotiations, we always have to be optimistic because the objective is to meet each other halfway. It's not a win-all approach. It should be a win-win,” Shangase said. He confirmed that some impounded vehicles have already been released after operators provided the necessary documentation. “We always say we are law-abiding citizens and want only roadworthy vehicles on the road. These vehicles were impounded because drivers didn't have their operating licenses on hand, not because they were unfit for service,” Shangase explained. The strike's impact has been felt across all sectors. Local businesses, like the Bush Tavern in Umdloti, have struggled to operate with skeleton staff. “We've been busy since early morning, with management driving around to pick up staff so we can keep running,” said Brenton Turner, a local business owner. “For those without cars, it's been a real struggle just to keep above water, but we're open and doing our best.” Listeners shared stories of hardship, with many forced to walk long distances to work or school. One parent recounted, “One of my kids didn't make it to school. The other had to walk eight kilometers because he had a project due. I myself walked six kilometers to work.” Another listener, a teacher, described classrooms half-empty and the challenge of catching up on missed assessments: “I can't do my job properly, and I'm not even sure if they'll be there tomorrow. There are deadlines to be met and it's affecting us badly.” Shangase acknowledged the pain caused by the strike, urging both taxi operators and commuters to remain patient. “We know people have been affected in different ways. Others were intending to go for interviews and have lost out. It's very painful and sad. We are pleading with our members to regroup and prioritize commuters.” As talks between Santaco and government officials continue, there is hope that a resolution will be reached soon. “There's light at the end of the tunnel,” Shangase assured. In the meantime, KZN residents are left waiting, hoping for a swift end to the crisis that has upended daily life across the province.
Stephen Grootes speaks to Tracey Davies, Executive Director at Just Share, about climate irony. Toyota South Africa is suing Transnet, the KZN government and eThekwini municipality for R6.5 million in damages from the 2022 floods, arguing officials failed to maintain key flood defences. But as Davies notes, there’s an irony: Toyota itself is part of the fossil-fuel economy driving the climate crisis behind such extreme weather. The possibility of Democratic Alliance (DA) Federal Council Chairperson Helen Zille as the next Mayor of Johannesburg has the country talking. In this interview with BizNews, Zille says although she has not yet made up her mind, she is “tending in the direction of doing so”. If she were to become Mayor, she says, her “only objective will be to restore service delivery and functionality” to Joburg. “And then Joburg will fly. It's got everything going for it. It's got every potential going for it. And that's what it must get right. We've got to get Joburg. We've got to get eThekwini. We've got to get Tshwane…the metros in Gauteng are the next major frontier and South Africa will stand or fall by what we do with the metros in Gauteng.” As for how African National Congress (ANC) Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi might feel about the prospect of her as mayor, Zille says: “…he will pull out all the stops to stop me, no doubt about that. So will Herman Mashaba (ActionSA Leader). He's played the race card already.” Meanwhile, Zille stresses that she and her family are committed to staying in South Africa. “And for South Africa to work, Joburg's got to work. It's very simple. We can't have just the Western Cape working. We've got to have the whole of South Africa working. And that's why we put up really good candidates to be mayoral candidates in all the cities, all the cities where we've got a chance.”

The DA should have burnt the ANC flag instead of the national flag, says ActionSA leader Herman Mashaba says in a wide-ranging interview on the Sunday Times Politics Weekly podcast. The party stirred controversy earlier this week when it launched its election campaign advertisement showing the national flag in flames. The DA has defended the advert, with federal chair Helen Zille saying the alternative to being rescued is dying. The party's election slogan is “Unite to rescue South Africa”. Asked about his ambitions, Mashaba said: “Being president of the country or being a premier are the last jobs I want, but I am committed to finding a solution to our country's problems.” He said he blames former president Thabo Mbeki for many of the country's problems, saying his advice proved to be “disastrous” and “he's got the experience of destroying”. Mashaba told podcast host Mike Siluma that ActionSA has proposed renaming eThekwini after the late Mangosuthu Buthelezi. He also discussed his party's plans for economic recovery and immigration.
