This audio is brought to you by Wearcheck, your condition monitoring specialist. Ongoing strong performance by South Africa's Hillside Aluminium operation in KwaZulu-Natal has helped diversified mining company South32 achieve record half-year aluminium production. Moreover, South Africa Manganese sales increased by 9% in the December quarter at a 5% price premium to the medium grade 37% manganese lump ore index. There were lower secondary production yields at South32's Australia Manganese, where a royalty tax equal to 20% of adjusted earnings before interest and tax applies. Full-year guidance of 720 000 t of aluminium production remains unchanged at South Africa's Hillside Aluminium, whereas in Mozambique, full-year production guidance for the Mozal Aluminium smelter has been reduced by 12% amid Mozal's saleable production decreasing by 9% in the six months to December 31. Furthermore, owing to some 60% of Mozal's production consisting of below specification material in the last three months of last year, Mozal product sold at discount prices compared with South32's other London Metal Exchange-linked aluminium sales. "With some of our commodities facing headwinds in the half, we continued to focus on delivering cost efficiencies and expect first half operating unit costs to be below or in line with guidance for the majority of our operations," South32 CEO Graham Kerr stated in a release to Mining Weekly. "As we enter the second half, strengthening market conditions for many of our commodities, our planned 7% production growth and ongoing cost management focus, position us well to capture higher margin," Kerr said. BATTERY MANGANESE Meanwhile, Financial Review journalist Hans van Leeuwen has reported from Davos that South32 is pressing on with plans to potentially supply manganese for battery making. Kerr revealed in the report that initial memorandums of understanding with some battery makers and the supply of samples for a pilot study were now being expanded. "We'll give enough material so they can seriously test it," Kerr is quoted as saying. Ultimately, South32 might produce high purity manganese sulphate monohydrate or HPMSM itself and sell that to the battery makers. "When we thought about this three or four years ago, our marketing team said it would be about a 10 000 t market. Then all of a sudden, we're talking to our customers, and they're all asking for 60 000 t," Kerr said. "It's looking more promising." Three other companies involved in the manganese industry in Southern Africa are showing strong interest in the production of HPMSM battery manganese for the battery industry in general and battery electric vehicles (BEVs) in particular. Foremost among these is Bernard Swanepoel's Manganese Metal Co (MMC) in Mbombela, Mpumalanga, South Africa, which has a half-century of experience in adding value to manganese and has been engaging in far-reaching preparation for entry into the potentially colossal HPMSM market. Trade & Industrial Policy Strategies (TIPS) senior economist Gaylor Montmasson-Clair describes the Mbombela company as "a South African industrial jewel" that could be much bigger than what it is today. He describes MMC as a one-of-a-kind company that should be supported on its growth trajectory. TIPS, an independent, non-profit, economic research institution based in Tshwane, was established in 1996 to support economic policy development, with an emphasis on industrial policy in South Africa and the region. All that stands between MMC and the construction of the battery manganese project in Mbombela is the finalisation of funding, which South Africa's State-owned Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) has managed to achieve for Botswana to the extent that the Canada-owned Giyani Metals has described the IDC funding as being the cornerstone of its $26-million funding package. Funding from the IDC for construction of South Africa's own potentially paradigm-shifting initial HPMSM plant in Mbombela is stil...

The African National Congress (ANC) has reportedly taken its logo dispute with the newly formed uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party to the Electoral Court. ANC secretary-general (SG) Fikile Mbalula revealed during a live interview with eNCA that he had signed papers on Tuesday. "MK is our trademark. It is well known in South Africa. It's the people's army, and it belongs to the ANC," he said. Mbalula added that the ANC challenged the formation of the MK Party in May and won, but later a certificate was awarded to the new organisation without the party's knowledge. "The technicality about that was that [there] was a gazette, and we didn't respond. We were unaware of that, and once we were aware, we responded. We are challenging that and we are going to the Electoral Court. I signed the papers [on Tuesday]," he added. Interim MK Party spokesperson Nhlamulo Ndlela said: "We have just heard statements that were mentioned by Fikile Mbalula. We will respond accordingly when we receive court papers; until then, it is just hearsay." The two parties are embroiled in a legal battle over the use of the MK logo. The ANC believes the logo bears similarities to that of its military wing, uMkhonto weSizwe. In a letter of demand, the ANC submitted that the logo would confuse voters at the polls. In what appeared to be a desperate attempt to spin his most recent statements on using millions of taxpayers' money for security upgrades to former president Jacob Zuma's homestead in Nkandla, including R4-million on a "fire pool", Mbalula said he was speaking to ANC cadres and would not sugarcoat his message. Mbalula added that he was not throwing party members under the bus when he said the party had lied to defend Zuma. He was relaying historical facts, he said. "I was not addressing a media conference. I was speaking to ANC supporters, and when I talk to ANC supporters and members, I don't sugarcoat issues. I say what they know and what is the truth, and that truth is on that day, Nkandla was explained," he added. Since then, former police minister Nathi Nhleko said his 2014 claim that the R4-million pool was a "fire pool" aimed at securing the home of the president at the time was backed up by facts. Mbalula said he would engage with Nhleko "quietly as per ANC standards". He added that ANC chairperson Gwede Mantashe had broken ANC protocol by speaking out publicly against him. Mantashe told journalists on Tuesday that Mbalula may have been excited by the press when he commented on the fire pool in Nkandla. Mbalula said that while Mantashe had yet to answer his phone calls, he would meet with him in Mbombela to discuss the matter. "I will get him every day. Every day we meet. I am not in a hurry about it. "I think in his way, he thought he was doing something good for the movement, and in this particular instance, I will give him the benefit of the doubt. "Who am I in the ANC? I am just the SG," Mbalula added. In the ANC's build-up programme on Thursday, party leaders and members embark on poverty alleviation programmes, which includes planting vegetable gardens in the area.

All Blacks coach Ian Foster has made what could be the final big call of his tenure, handing the No 10 jersey to Richie Mo'unga for the second test against South Africa at Ellis Park in Johannesburg this weekend. Foster is also gambling on two of his less-experienced props, Ethan de Groot and Tyrel Lomax, to match the Springboks' monstrous men. The All Blacks props have 20 test caps between them. It is the first test start of the year for Mo'unga, who guided the Crusaders to victory in Super Rugby Pacific, and has watched on ever since as the All Blacks have made faltering starts in all their matches this year. Incumbent first five-eighths Beauden Barrett, a two-time World Player of the Year, is relegated to the substitutes bench, from where he could enter the fray as a replacement for Mo'unga or in the outside backs. Other than the change at 10, the beleaguered coach largely played it safe in his backline selections, sticking with the same players who ran on to the field in last week's 26-10 humbling in the Rugby Championship opener in Mbombela. That result from a directionless performance was the fifth defeat in six starts for Foster's men. Jordie Barrett has overcome ankle injury concerns to hold on to the No 15 jersey, with another Springbok barrage of high balls likely. Caleb Clarke and Will Jordan start on the wings, while the coach persists with Rieko Ioane in the No 13 jersey. David Havili is at second five-eighths and Aaron Smith continues at halfback. Under-pressure captain Sam Cane has retained his place as openside flanker, and takes the field alongside No 8 Ardie Savea and Shannon Frizell, who has been called up to fill the No 6 jersey after Akira Ioane, who moves to the bench, had little impact last week. Locks Scott Barrett and Sam Whitelock return to duty, as does hooker Samisoni Taukei'aho — one of the few bright performers last week. Uncapped tighthead Fletcher Newell is set to make his All Blacks debut from the bench, with Angus Ta'avao missing out after struggling in the front row last week. Codie Taylor returns to the bench after being dropped in the first test, while George Bower, Tupou Vaa'i, Finlay Christie and Quinn Tupaea make up the rest of the substitutes. "Belief and confidence remain high in our group, which is working incredibly hard this week," said Foster. "Playing at Ellis Park is always a special occasion for any All Black team, and this weekend will be no different. "Adding to that, the Freedom Cup is on the line which makes this a challenge that everyone is looking forward to." Meanwhile, Duane Vermeulen is back for the Springboks at No 8 for his first test this year as South Africa made five changes to its starting lineup, the team announced earlier this week. Two of those changes were forced, with Jaden Hendrikse at halfback in place of Faf de Klerk, who was ruled out with concussion, while Jesse Kriel replaces Kurt-Lee Arendse, who was sent off, injured and subsequently suspended for four games after a dangerous tackle on Beauden Barrett in the first test. South Africa coach Jacques Nienaber also made two tactical switches in the front row by bringing in Ox Nché for Trevor Nyakane at loosehead prop and restoring Bongi Mbonambi as starting hooker in place of Malcolm Marx. Tighthead prop Frans Malherbe is set for his 50th test. The Springboks are seeking back-to-back wins over the All Blacks for the first time since 2009 and another defeat for New Zealand is expected to see Foster lose his job. The All Blacks have slipped to an all-time low of No 5 on the world rankings. Caleb Clarke will return for the All Blacks this weekend, taking his place on the wing for the first test against the Springboks at Mbombela Stadium. For their first test in South Africa since 2018, the All Blacks have named a few surprises in the team for the clash on Sunday morning (NZ time). Samisoni Taukei'aho, in his 12th test, will make just his second start at the top level, while Angus Ta'avao takes on the starting tighthead prop role in the absense of Nepo Laulala. George Bower, the best of the team's props in the Ireland series, retains his place as the first-choice loosehead. Tyrel Lomax and Ethan de Groot - neither of whom were selected in the squad for the Ireland series - will provide cover from the bench. Scott Barrett joins Sam Whitelock in the locking department with Brodie Retallick unavailable due to injury, while Tupou Vaa'i will look to make his impact late if called upon. The back row is a predictable one, with Akira Ioane, Sam Cane and Ardie Savea retaining their roles, while Aaron Smith and Beauden Barrett hold down the No 9 and 10 jerseys. Will Jordan and Clarke provide speed and flair on the wings, outside Rieko Ioane and David Havili in the midfield, and Jordie Barrett at fullback. "What a great way to start this year's Rugby Championship. It's always an exciting tournament to be part of," All Blacks head coach Ian Foster said. "This year's draw means we have a massive challenge of two games here in the South Africa. "We have settled in well in Mbombela and are preparing for what is always an intense game against our old foe. "Many of our squad are here in South Africa for the first time. This gives us another opportunity to add new experiences and grow our game." All Blacks: Jordie Barrett, Will Jordan, Rieko Ioane, David Havili, Caleb Clarke, Beauden Barrett, Aaron Smith, Ardie Savea, Sam Cane, Akira Ioane, Scott Barrett, Sam Whitelock, Angus Ta'avao, Samisoni Taukei'aho, George Bower. Reserves: Dane Coles, Ethan de Groot, Tyrel Lomax, Tupou Vaa'i, Shannon Frizell, Finlay Christie, Richie Mo'unga, Quinn Tupaea.
