After almost 10 year, the families of those who died in the Life Esidimeni tragedy might finally see justice. The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has received a legal opinion recommending the prosecution of former Gauteng health MEC Qedani Mahlangu and former director of mental health in Gauteng, Dr Makgabo Manamela, for the deaths of two mental healthcare users in the Life Esidimeni tragedy. The families of those who suffered and lost their lives during the saga say they met with Acting Director of Public Prosecutions, Marika Jansen van Vuuren on Monday, 18 August to inform them of the development. In 2016, at least 144 mental healthcare patients died when the termination of the Gauteng Department of Health's contract with long-term psychiatric care hospital Life Esidimeni resulted in more than 1,400 patients being moved to ill-equipped and unlicensed non-government organisations. The Democratic Alliance in Gauteng will lay criminal charges today against former Head of the Gauteng Department of Transport, Ronald Swartz. DA Shadow MEC Evert Du Plessis says Swartz, who served from 2013 to 2019, oversaw significant financial mismanagement. A PricewaterhouseCoopers report revealed over R400 million in irregular expenditure on bus subsidies during the 2016/17 and 2017/18 financial years, plus R70 million in fruitless and wasteful spending in 2015/16. The Gauteng Department of Education has suspended two inspectors from its Infrastructure Unit. The inspectors were assigned to manage a project to conduct repairs at Noordgesig Secondary School in Soweto following a fire that broke out at the school last year. Following the fire incident that occurred at the said school, the Department had allocated funds for urgent repairs and reconstruction work. However, it is suspected that repairs might have not been completed, some of the committed upgrades are suspected to have been partially done or not carried out at all. The Gauteng Department of Health in partnership with the Medical Bureau for Occupational Diseases are rolling out an initiative to trace former mine workers who may be eligible for social security benefits for work-related illnesses and possible provident/pension funds due to them. While the programme will be rolled out across the province, Phase one has already began in the West Rand District due to a large concentration of mines in that area. The Gauteng Department of Education says it has successfully placed 32,587 late online applicants in Grades 1 and 8 before today's deadline. MEC Matome Chiloane confirmed that 1,500 out of 2,079 schools were open for late applications since December 11. To ease overcrowding, the department introduced satellite schools, creating over 4,417 additional spaces in high-pressure areas. The community of Naledi in Soweto is still reeling from the deaths of five children who died after allegedly consuming chips from a local spaza shop. The children, aged between six and nine, died within minutes of each other on Sunday. Their parents are lamenting how the children died at a local clinic after displaying symptoms of diarrhoea, vomiting, and frothing at the mouth. The families of the five children have relayed how they were all friends and how they passed on after allegedly consuming chips bought from a local spaza shop in the area. They expressed their pain and sorrow as they try to cope with the loss of these children. One child is currently in hospital under intensive care, and this is what the child's mother told Eyewitness News: "So, the doctor said that the poison is coming out. They can't tell me that it's going to be fine or what. Only God knows. I must just pray."
