The Gauteng Department of Health in partnership with the Medical Bureau for Occupational Diseases are rolling out an initiative to trace former mine workers who may be eligible for social security benefits for work-related illnesses and possible provident/pension funds due to them. While the programme will be rolled out across the province, Phase one has already began in the West Rand District due to a large concentration of mines in that area. The Gauteng Department of Health has refuted recent media reports alleging that it intends to compel school girls aged 12 years and above, to receive contraceptives without their consent. The reports began earlier this month following a school visit by provincial Health MEC, Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko, where she was reported to have announced the alleged proposed rollout of the program. The Gauteng Department of Education says it has successfully placed 32,587 late online applicants in Grades 1 and 8 before today's deadline. MEC Matome Chiloane confirmed that 1,500 out of 2,079 schools were open for late applications since December 11. To ease overcrowding, the department introduced satellite schools, creating over 4,417 additional spaces in high-pressure areas. The community of Naledi in Soweto is still reeling from the deaths of five children who died after allegedly consuming chips from a local spaza shop. The children, aged between six and nine, died within minutes of each other on Sunday. Their parents are lamenting how the children died at a local clinic after displaying symptoms of diarrhoea, vomiting, and frothing at the mouth. The families of the five children have relayed how they were all friends and how they passed on after allegedly consuming chips bought from a local spaza shop in the area. They expressed their pain and sorrow as they try to cope with the loss of these children. One child is currently in hospital under intensive care, and this is what the child's mother told Eyewitness News: "So, the doctor said that the poison is coming out. They can't tell me that it's going to be fine or what. Only God knows. I must just pray." The Gauteng Department of Education has expressed deep sorrow following news of the deaths of four learners in two seperate incidents. In the first incident, three siblings enrolled at Evaton Primary School in Sebokeng, south of the province, reportedly fell ill at around 08:00 yesterday morning. Department spokesperson, Steve Mabona says two of the learners, a girl in Grade 3 and a boy in Grade 4, were rushed to the school's sick bay after complaining of stomach pains. As the two were being assessed, their sister, a Grade 5 learner, was also found unresponsive at the same school. All three learners were reportedly rushed to a nearby clinic, where they were tragically declared dead. The department says the fourth learner, a Grade 8 learner from Tsakane Secondary School, in Ekurhuleni, died on Monday after she and another learner allegedly ingested rat poison on the school's premises. The Gauteng Department of Education has expressed vehement condemnation of a violent incident in which two learners were removed from Matshidiso Primary School, in Ekurhuleni, by a group of men brandishing a gun and pangas. The department says police are investigating after video footage of the incident went viral on social media platforms yesterday.
