Hello & Welcome to another Real Talk with Tamera episode! This one is really special, not to say any previous or following are not, but this was my first time hosting a live recording of the real talk with Tamera episode! This was a really great way to connect with listeners but also celebrate 6 months of the podcast, which is hard to believe it’s already been 6 months, but here we are.My guest for this special episode was my friend and fellow boss in charge, Sakita Holley. Sakita is an award winning publicist + the Founder/CEO of House of Success PR, an award winning firm that launched 9 years ago.The topic was increasing your visibility and how to thrive + build resilience in an unpredictable environment and this is totally something me + Sakita are pretty familiar with. Here is a little bit more about Sakita…Sakita Holley is an award winning publicist and the Founder/CEO of House of Success PR.The nine year old firm has worked with a wide array of clients that include Luster's Pink, African Pride, Lottabody, KinkyCurlyYaki, Harlem Arts Festival, Heat Free Hair and more. You can find and follow her on social media @MissSuccessWhat’s really special is we’ve seen each other grow up and build our businesses since the beginning. We graduated a year a part from Howard University and we’ve been in the thick of building our businesses, dismantling our own limiting beliefs and growing together. We talked for about 90 minutes, but I edited it down to about 70 or so and honestly, we could have gone longer. We covered how it was in the very beginning, how done is better than perfect, why it’s important to give someone their flowers, while they’re still here, the importance of networking laterally, actually building with people you like, some relationship advice and so so so much more.So grab your favorite drink or cocktail and settle in for what was an amazing conversation. So without further adieu, let’s get into this conversation.P.S. Brian K Marks never liked the term “industry standard.” Instead, he took a different path leading to a life-long entrepreneurial record of achievement – innovating products and brand experiences that resonated with consumers. At 25, Brian started African Pride – a maker of ethnic hair and skin products. He tapped into the Afrocentric movement at the time, creating innovative “street level” merchandising and advertising sampling programs that grew the business from zero to over $35MM in annual sales. He later sold the company to Revlon for over $40MM, staying on as President of Revlon ethnic products worldwide – overseeing the A.P. Product brands and Revlon's ethnic product portfolio. In this interview: * How to go into a partnership * Why borrow from a bank * The power of the trademark * How to sell your company * Corporate America vs Entrepreneurship * How to survive success * Starting over again in the Amazon Age * My Israel's Miracle the first company ever to use “Israel” in the prefix/suffix of a brand * Amazon vs Retail To recommend someone for an interview and to reach Rabbi Werde, email Rabbiw@chye.info

Brian K. Marks, who has launched a series of companies that offer women’s quality haircare products, will be the featured guest on this episode of Dustin Plantholt’s “Life’s Tough, You Can Be Tougher” podcast. Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, Brian began his entrepreneurial career by selling products to the health-food trade from his car trunk. At age 25, he started a haircare company called “African Pride.” That company, which produced haircare products for the African-American community, was so successful that Brian received the prestigious “Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award” in 1996. Revlon, ultimately, purchased “African Pride” in 1998. Brian then was named president of Revlon’s worldwide Multicultural Division. Working at a big company, however, did not suit his entrepreneurial spirit. He waited out his non-compete agreement with Revlon, and then, in 2004, started another new brand, “Dr. Miracles.” The brand name referred to a fictitious, cure-providing scientist. Like “African Pride,” the brand was a hit, and Brian subsequently sold it to a major private-equity company. “African Pride” and “Dr. Miracles, along with a couple of other brands Brian created – “All Ways Natural” and “Ginseng Miracle” – continue to rack up sales, surpassing a billion dollars in collective retail revenue. After the sale of “Dr. Miracles,” Brian took time off. He met his future wife Nene, a former model who emigrated to the United States from West Africa. The couple has three sons and three daughters. Brian also became curious about his Jewish heritage and began studying it which prompted him to travel to Israel for the first time. It was while in Israel that Brian said he felt “an amazing connection to something ancient, spiritual, and energizing.” He further discovered that there were ingredients, which had been used for thousands of years. Such ingredients, he thought, could be the basis for a new, organic haircare formula. The result was the onset of Brian’s latest product line, “My Israel’s Miracle.” In addition to introducing this new line, Brian continues his strong focus on philanthropy and recently pledged to support Hatzalah, the largest independent, non-profit, fully volunteer Emergency Medical Service organization that provides the fastest and free emergency medical first response throughout Israel. Life’s tough – you can be tougher, like Brian Marks, who never tires of bringing a new product to fruition, and leveraging his success for the sake of good in the world.
