Experience the wonder and excitement of watching wild birds! Suzy shares her observations of local birds in southern England to those seen internationally. Listen to recorded bird walks, interviews, and stories from birdwatchers around the world.
The Casual Birder Podcast is a delightful and informative show that has reignited my interest in birding. Suzy Buttress, the host, has a calm and inviting delivery that makes you feel like you're joining her on a peaceful walk through nature. The best aspect of this podcast is Suzy's genuine passion for birds and her ability to convey that enthusiasm to her listeners. Her love for the topic is infectious, and she encourages others to embrace birding as well. The show features interesting guests who share their knowledge and experiences, adding depth to each episode. Additionally, Suzy's soothing voice combined with the sounds of birds in the background creates a relaxing atmosphere that transports you into nature.
One potential downside of The Casual Birder Podcast is that it may not appeal to those who have no interest in birds or nature. While Suzy does an excellent job of making the topic accessible and interesting, some listeners may find it difficult to engage with discussions solely focused on birdwatching. However, for those with even a slight curiosity about birds or who enjoy spending time outdoors, this podcast is highly enjoyable.
In conclusion, The Casual Birder Podcast is a must-listen for anyone interested in birds or looking for a calming escape into nature. Suzy Buttress is a charming host who shares her knowledge and love for birding in an engaging way. This show has taught me so much about birds and their behavior while providing a sense of relaxation and tranquility. I highly recommend giving The Casual Birder Podcast a listen; it may just inspire you to look up at the skies and appreciate the beauty of our feathered friends.
Episode Notes Suzy reviews her birding experiences from January 2025, starting with the final week of an epic vacation to Australia! Back in the UK Suzy joined a local RSPB outing and went to the New Forest with the Ladybirder sub-group of the Hampshire Ornithlogical Society (HOS). While in the New Forest Suzy spoke with HOS Chair Keith Betton about his early birding experiences and the success of HOS initiatives to increase the engagement of young people and women birders in the group. Host Suzy speaks with Sandra Morocho (Birdwatchers of Quijos Valley, Ecuador) and Michaela Leeb (Swarovski Optik). Sandra lives in the cloud forest on the eastern slopes of the Andes in Ecuador. In 2014 she won a pair of binoculars in the Digiscoper of the Year competition run by Swarovski. Using the binoculars stoked Sandra's enthusiasm for sharing views of the local birds with her friends. From there, Sandra's engagement with the wider community led to an initiative with local leaders to promote eco-tourism alongside conservation efforts in the cloud forest in the Quijos Valley. Michaela tells us of the part Swarovski plays in supporting conservation efforts around the world. We also hear how Sandra and Michaela would spend a fantasy birding day. Alan Davis and Ruth Miller are passionate birders. In 2008 they gave up their jobs and sold everything to embark on an epic year-long quest to see and hear as many bird species as possible. After many adventures, on a journey taking them around the world, their final total was an amazing 4341 species, achieving a world record for the most species seen in one year. They wrote about their adventures in their book The Biggest Twitch. They now run a bird-watching tour company providing guided tours (with cake) in their home country of Wales and worldwide. A passionate designer, Dick set out to revolutionise bird feeding practices by confronting the disease and contamination risks that exist wherever we feed our garden birds. Not only do their feeders separate the food from contact with birds feet, they also encourage us to maintain good feeder hygiene by providing easy clean solutions through their innovative feeder design. Bridget Butler, also known as the Bird Diva, did not originally have a passion for birds. But seeing an Indigo Bunting one morning sparked her birding interest. Finding support and encouragement in the Vermont birding community Bridget developed an interest in slow birding. Bridget encourages the observation of birds as a holistic, mindful practice rather than a race to spot the most species. She now teaches the practice of slow birding, encouraging others to embrace a slower, more contemplative approach. Kate Shaw, from Strange Animals Podcast shares a delightful trip report about the birds she saw on a recent vacation to Belize. It was a family vacation rather than a pure birding trip, but she still managed to squeeze in a day's birding with a guide. In addition, Kate took note of the birds around her while at the beach or while walking to the next village. And Suzy shows how Kate used the key bird identification tools to narrow down the species she was seeing in Belize. A short episode to alert you to two events currently on: the Great Backyard Bird Count, and National Nextbox Week. Due to delays in my episode production, the next episode will be too late to tell you about these two events. The Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) 18-21 Feb 2022 What started as a way to collect data on birds visiting backyards in North America, is now a global event that provides data helping researchers learn about bird populations. Anyone can take part - just watch birds for 15 minutes or more and submit your checklist to the eBird or Merlin mobile apps or the eBird website. Visit the official website for more information. And follow along with the event on the eBird GBBC page where you can filter sightings and recent checklists by region on a page tailored to the Great Backyard Bird Count. National Nestbox Week 14-21 Feb 2022 Organised by the BTO (British Trust for Ornithology) the event encourages people to put up nest boxes to help breeding birds, needed because many natural sites are disappearing. It's also a great way to feel connected with nature, when you see birds raising their young nearby. Members of the team had a range of birding experience, from novice to expert, and saw 430 species in locations in Australia, UK & Europe and North America. This week’s episode was originally created for International Podcast Month, September 2020, and released on their podcast feed. Over the past year, many of us have been seeking solace in nature. As I have remained at home much of the time since the lockdowns began, my garden birds have provided interest and distraction. In episode 96, I provide an audio portrait of the 13 bird species that regularly visited my garden during 2020, including: - what they look like, - how they sound, and - some of the behaviours and interactions I've noticed. If you live in the UK, this episode will help you to identify some of the more common birds found in our gardens and parks. Wherever you live, I hope it will encourage you to look more closely at your own local birds, and maybe consider keeping a journal of their appearance and behaviours. Suzy’s guest is Dr Amir Khan, General Practitioner, best-selling author, Nature enthusiast and Ambassador for the Wildlife Trusts. Amir tells us about the wildlife he sees in his garden, the importance of Nature for our well-being, and about his work as an Ambassador with the Wildlife Trusts, helping young people in inner cities to engage with the natural world. Amir's book is 'The Doctor will See You Know' A note about the interview: I spoke with Amir in September 2020, after we had left controlled lockdowns relating to the Pandemic, and those previous restrictions are spoken of in the past tense. At the time of the release of this episode in February 2021, the U.K. is back in lockdown. A content warning that, relevant to discussion about Amir’s profession as a General Practitioner, there are some references to the death of patients due to the Pandemic.
