Beneath the jokes, though, this episode gets honest. James talks candidly about anxiety, overthinking, creative insecurity and how performing is often the only reliable switch that quiets his brain. He reflects on grief, friendships, career knockbacks, confidence after good gigs and disappointment after bad ones, plus the strange balance between caring deeply about the world and protecting the emotional energy your family deserves. There are musings on comedy as purpose, why getting out of the house can save your sanity, why laughter is still the fuel, and why a life built around pubs, theatres and making people laugh in New Brunswick might just be the perfect version of success. Funny, heartfelt and reassuringly human, this is a Christmas Eve episode for anyone trying to stay hopeful, grateful and sane.Mullinger's Weekly Ramble is brought to you by Ganong ChocolatierPlease send any questions to comedy@jamesmullinger.comFor podcast sponsorship opportunities, please email info@podstarter.caProduced by Podstarter

What does it take to leave a comfortable corporate career and build a food brand from scratch? Adam D'Eramo, co-founder of Awake Caffeinated Chocolate, made the leap from PepsiCo to entrepreneurship over a single lunch conversation with two friends—and hasn't looked back in 12 years. In this episode, Adam shares the unfiltered reality of building a consumer brand: from testing their first product in a college convenience store to watching 75% of their customers disappear overnight during COVID.He breaks down the critical difference between having an idea and having a viable business opportunity, reveals how a persistent team member saved the company by pushing for e-commerce (when the founders resisted), and explains why resilience isn't just helpful for entrepreneurs—it's a prerequisite for survival. This conversation is for anyone wrestling with the "golden handcuffs" of a stable career, wondering if their side hustle could become a real business, or looking for honest insight into what it actually takes to stay alive as an entrepreneur when everything falls apart. In This EpisodeThe pivotal lunch conversation that sparked Awake Chocolate's foundingWhy "golden handcuffs" kept Adam at the breaking point—and how he broke freeThe crucial difference between having an idea and having a business opportunityHow a college convenience store test proved Awake had product-market fitSurviving COVID: Losing 75% of customers in one week and the fight to stay aliveThe team member who persistently pushed for e-commerce (and saved the company)Building a culture where ideas are welcomed and continuous improvement is the standardWhy resilience is the most unglamorized secret of entrepreneurial successKey TakeawaysStart before you're ready: If you're waiting for the perfect moment to leave corporate, allocate time on the side to test your idea. The journey of 1,000 miles begins with a single step.Ideas vs. opportunities: An idea becomes a business opportunity when people will pay for it AND you can turn a profit. Market test early and often.Use digital research tools: Concept testing through apps costs just a few hundred dollars and provides feedback in under 24 hours. Awake uses this multiple times per year.Break big problems into small ones: During COVID, Adam and his team focused on solving the problem right in front of them—this week, this month, this quarter—rather than being overwhelmed by the enormity of the challenge.Listen to your team: The marketing manager who persistently advocated for Amazon and e-commerce ultimately helped save the business during the pandemic when all physical locations closed.Memorable Quotes"I think the hardest regret for me to carry for the rest of my life would be if I didn't try this. A regret of inaction.""There's no substitute for executing an actual market test. When we found out we were selling 20 bars in a week, it was euphoric.""Are you a quitter? Quitters are losers. If no, then it doesn't look good today, but you've gotta find a way to solve this problem.""I haven't heard a single story that was all sunshine and rainbows. Everybody's had adversity. Resilience isn't just a nice attribute for an entrepreneur, it's a prerequisite.""The biggest strength of our partnership is that we know what we don't know. It's liberating to go find people who have that knowledge and capability."About the GuestAdam D'Eramo is the co-founder of Awake Caffeinated Chocolate, a functional snack brand that launched in 2012. After leaving PepsiCo with his co-founders Matt and Dan, Adam has spent over 12 years building Awake from a campus-exclusive product to a nationally distributed brand available in major retailers across Canada including Costco, Shoppers Drug Mart, Loblaws, and more. She built her teams around the customer journey, giving each pod full creative and data ownership. The people driving results also own the tools, learning by building and celebrating small wins. Her “change champions” make new ideas stick, and her view on AI is grounded; use it to go faster, not think for you. Curiosity, she says, is what keeps marketing human.About MeganMegan Kwon runs digital customer communications at Loblaw Digital, the team behind how millions of Canadians hear from brands like Loblaws, Shoppers Drug Mart, and President's Choice. She's part strategist, part systems thinker, and fully obsessed with how data can make marketing feel more human, not less. Before returning to Loblaw, Megan helped reshape how people discover and trust local marketplaces at Kijiji, and before that, she built growth engines in the fintech world at NorthOne. Her career has been a study in scale; from scrappy e-commerce tests to national lifecycle programs that touch nearly every Canadian household. What sets her apart is the way she leads: with deep curiosity, radical ownership, and a bias for collaboration. She believes numbers tell stories, and that the best marketing teams build movements around insight, empathy, and accountability.Building a Career Around Conversations That ScaleRunning digital messaging at Loblaw means coordinating communication at a scale that few marketers ever experience. Megan oversees the systems that deliver millions of emails and texts across brands Canadians interact with daily, including Loblaws, Shoppers Drug Mart, and President's Choice. Her team manages both marketing and transactional messages, making sure each one aligns with a specific stage in the customer journey. The workload is immense. Each division has its own priorities, and every campaign needs to fit within a shared infrastructure that still feels personal to the customer.“We work with a lot of different business divisions across the entire organization. Our job is to make sure their strategies and programs come to life through the customer lifecycle.”Megan's team operates more like a connective tissue than a broadcast engine. They bridge the gaps between marketing, product, and data teams, translating disconnected strategies into a unified experience. That work involves building systems capable of:Managing multiple brand voices while keeping messaging consistentTriggering real-time communications that respond to customer behaviorIntegrating old and new technologies without breaking operational flowEvery campaign becomes part of a continuous conversation with the customer. Each message is one step in a long dialogue, not a one-off announcement.Megan's perspective comes from experience earned in very different industries. She began her career at Loblaw during the early days of online grocery, a time when digital operations were experimental and resourceful. She later worked across fintech, marketplaces, and paid media before returning to Loblaw. That journey helped her understand every layer of the customer funnel, from acquisition through retention. It also taught her how to combine growth marketing tactics with enterprise-level communication systems, that way she can scale personalization without losing humanity. Most large organizations still treat messaging as a collection of isolated programs. Megan treats it as an ecosystem. Her work shows that when lifecycle and acquisition efforts operate within a shared framework, communication becomes more coherent and far more effective. Alignment between data, channels, and teams reduces noise and builds trust with customers who engage across multiple brands.Key takeaway: Building a unified messaging ecosystem starts with structure, not volume. Create systems that connect channels, data, and brand voices into one coordinated experience. Treat messaging as a relationship that continues long after the first conversion. That way you can make enterprise-scale communication feel personal, intentional, and consistent across every touchpoint.Customer Journey Pods and Martech Team StructuresRunning digital communications at Loblaw means managing one of the largest customer ecosystems in the country. The team sends millions of messages across grocery, pharmacy, and e-commerce brands every week. Each interaction has to feel personal, relevant, and timely, even when it comes from a massive organization. Megan explains that the only way to handle that kind of scale is to treat data as the operating system and collaboration as the backbone. Her team relies on analytics to shape every message. Real-time signals from dozens of digital properties guide what customers see, when they see it, and how those experiences evolve. It is a constant feedback loop between behavior and communication. “We lean a lot into the data that we gather,” Megan says. “That pretty much drives almost everything that we do.” The systems are only half the story, though. The other half is how her team stays connected across offices, divisions, and projects. They share knowledge in Coda, manage progress in Jira, and rely on Slack to keep conversations fluid. Even their emojis have purpose, creating a shared language that makes collaboration faster and more human.“Everything that we do, we share that knowledge back and forth so that we can continue to learn off each other,” Megan said. The team structure used to follow the company's business units. Each division had its own specialists who acted like small internal agencies. It worked for speed, but it made collaboration harder. Megan reorganized everything around the customer journey instead. Her teams now work in “pods” that align with stages such as onboarding, discovery, shopping, and post-purchase. Each pod has both data and creative ownership over its domain. That way, a single team can experiment, learn, and apply what works across multiple brands.Megan also built intentional overlap between pods to keep ideas moving. For example, the loyalty and early engagement pod owns both new-member activation and retention. That connection helps them understand the full customer arc, from first purchase to repeat visits. The result is a flexible structure that shares expertise fluidly without losing focus. Large enterprises tend to slow down under their own weight, but this model keeps Loblaw's marketing engine fast, synchronized, and grounded in customer behavior. The work Megan's team does might look complex from the out...

What unique challenges do women face in ministry leadership—and what gives them hope for the future of the church? In this special roundtable episode of the Future Christian Podcast, host Loren Richmond Jr. welcomes a panel of seasoned clergy leaders: Rev. Tabatha Johnson (Disciples of Christ), The Venerable Sheila Van Zandwyck (Anglican), Rev. Canon Katherine Morgan (Anglican), and Rev. Canon Martha Tatarnic (Anglican and Future Christian co-host). Together, they share candid stories about their call to ministry, navigating representation and authority, the sacrifices women often make that men may not, and how mentors and allies have helped along the way. From maternity leave struggles to stereotypes about “what a minister should look like,” these leaders open up about both progress and persistent challenges for women in the church today. Listeners will gain insights into: How women discern and embrace a call to ordained ministry. The “stained glass ceiling” and ongoing equity issues in church leadership. The importance of mentors, representation, and visible role models. How congregations respond differently to women clergy across traditions. What gives hope for the next generation of women entering ministry. Whether you're a pastor, church leader, or layperson passionate about equality in the church, this episode offers wisdom, encouragement, and a vision for a more inclusive future.   Rev. Tabatha D. Johnson is a pastor in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).  She has served as a pastor and chaplain for over twenty years. She graduated from the University of Missouri-Kansas City and Central Baptist Theological Seminary and is co-editor and contributor to Still A Mother: Journeys Through Perinatal Bereavement (Judson Press.) a 2017 Gold Medal Winner in the Illumination Book Awards. She is currently the Senior Pastor at Shawnee Community Christian Church where she joyfully serves alongside people who love Jesus and one another. Tabatha's greatest love, besides her family and her church, are coffee and starting home improvement projects in her home that someday, hopefully, she will finish. Tabatha lives with her spouse, Cory, and their children in the Kansas City Metro. The Venerable Sheila Van Zandwyk is Archdeacon of Lincoln Deanery and Rector of Church of the Transfiguration. She was born and raised in St. Catharines and was raised in the Christian Reformed Church. She began attending an Anglican Church in my twenties. Until starting seminary at 40, Van Zandwyk worked in retail, for a number of years as the Manager of a Shoppers Drug Mart. Ordained for 17 years, Van Zandwyk has worked in churches in Oakville, Hamilton and now St. Catharines, being at Transfiguration for 6 years now.  The Reverend Canon Katherine Morgan graduated with a Master of Divinity from Trinity College, University of Toronto. Morgan is ordained in the Diocese of Niagara where she had the privilege of serving in rural, small town and city parishes for 29 years.  Currently Morgan is the rector of Church of the Resurrection in Hamilton. In her free time, she loves to sing, enjoy puzzles, and is the proud parent of an adult son.    Mentioned Resources:

Now, let's take a moment to remember what Canada looked like when Gord first put on his Shopper's Drug Mart badge.    In 1978, Pierre Elliott Trudeau was our Prime Minister.  The Toronto Blue Jays had just played their second Major League Baseball season.  Terry Fox was training quietly for what would become his heroic Marathon of Hope.  Anne Murray was topping the music charts, and Canadians were gathering around their TVs to watch Hockey Night in Canada, cheering on legends like Guy Lafleur and the Montreal Canadiens, who would go on to the Stanley Cup that year.  Through all those decades of Canadian history, Gord has been a constant with  kindness, professionalism, and a friendly smile at Shoppers Drug Mart. His leadership and dedication, along with the entire Shoppers team, have made that store a true pillar of the community.  On behalf of all the friendly and dedicated staff at Shoppers Drug Mart, the friends you have made, the customers that you have helped, everyone here at The ‘X' Zone Radio/TV Show, my wife Laura and myself, Gord, we all want to thank you.  Thank you for always being there for our family, and for families in St. Catharines that have met you, and have been customers at your Shoppers Drug Mart in the Lake and Carlton Plaza.  Gord, as you step into retirement after nearly half a century of service, we all wish you nothing but health, happiness, and well-earned relaxation.  Gord, congratulations on an extraordinary career — and thank you for being part of our lives since 1978.”Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-x-zone-radio-tv-show--1078348/support.Please note that all XZBN radio and/or television shows are Copyright © REL-MAR McConnell Meda Company, Niagara, Ontario, Canada – www.rel-mar.com. In 2023, more than 6.5 million people across Canada did not have a family doctor. Family doctor deserts are growing so vast that patients will stay with their doctors even after moving hours away. Some provinces have been increasing pharmacists' capabilities – allowing them to prescribe for common ailments like pink eye. The hope is they can relieve some pressure on already stretched family doctors' offices and increase accessibility for people without one. After acquiring Shoppers Drug Mart in 2014, Loblaw has a hold on 25 per cent of the Canadian pharmacy market. Ten years later, they're betting that the future of Canadian healthcare lies at the back of their stores. They've started building what they're calling “pharmacy care clinics,” where pharmacists will be able to visit with patients in a clinic-like setting. Chris Hannay is the Globe's independent business reporter, and Susan Krashinsky Robertson is the Globe's retail reporter. They're on the show to talk about what Loblaw's expansion into the healthcare space means for Canadians, and what healthcare providers think about the move.Questions? Comments? Ideas? When The Beatles came out with Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, it seemed like music had changed forever. Out with the days of 78s and random singles compiled into LPs. Now the act of listening to music was an art in itself! Until it wasn't. In this episode, Hannah and Maia look past their musical differences to take you on a journey through music history as it collides with technology. As major innovations in music - disco, punk, MTV, pirating, the predetermination of music streaming - slowly erode the art of the concept album, it's hard not to wonder what, if anything, has been lost. Technology pushes music forward, but can music push back? Tangents include: hating on Shoppers Drug Mart; The Beatles originating the “rodent boyfriend” trend; and Maia putting a nickel into the “Don't Talk About Youtube” jar.  Support us on Patreon and get juicy bonus content: https://www.patreon.com/rehashpodcast Intro and outro song by our talented friend Ian Mills: https://linktr.ee/ianmillsmusic

You have to work pretty hard, in most of the country, to avoid spending money with a Loblaw-owned business. From its origins in groceries to market dominance there, the ubiquity of Shoppers Drug Mart and Pharmaprix, and everything from finance to clothing also under its umbrella, the Weston family has built a staggering retail empire. How did they do it? What happens when one company controls so much of the market for essential goods? What does it mean for us? Should the government take action here, and what could they do about it if they were so inclined? After all, isn't Loblaw just...successful?GUEST: David Moscrop, writer, author and political commentator (Read David's piece on Loblaw right here.)
