With the Paris Olympics kicking off this week, we thought there was no better time to revisit an episode we recorded in 2023 with Super Groom to the Stars Alan Davies. Alan Davies, the most famous groom in the world, needs no introduction - but if you have been hiding under a stone for a few years then let us introduce you to him. Alan is most famous for working alongside Charlotte Dujardin and Carl Hester, and really catapulted into the main stream media spotlight with the rise of Valegro - aka Blueberry. The ultimate professional, Alan has helped Team GB win so many medals that even he has lost count. In today's episode we put our EquiTeam member's questions to Alan as he shares his journey into becoming a professional groom, managing competition horses, his most memorable moments, some of the challenges along the way, and what it's like flying with horses internationally. Alan gives a taster into life as a professional and as a British Grooms Association Ambassador, Alan touches on how being a competition groom has changed as well as sharing some of his exciting plans for the future.

Carl Hester is a dressage rider who has competed in six Olympic Games, winning a team gold at London 2012. Carl grew up on Sark in the Channel Islands, where cars are banned and horses are part of the island's daily life. He learned to ride on a donkey before progressing to horses. After leaving school, his first job was at an equine therapy centre in Hampshire. A key moment in his early career was an invitation from Dr Wilfried Bechtolsheimer, a leading figure in dressage, to join his yard. In 1992 Carl became the youngest ever British rider to compete at an Olympic Games. As well as a gold in London in 2012, he and the team won silver in Rio in 2016, and earlier this year a bronze medal in Tokyo, where he was the oldest member of Team GB. Carl has also enjoyed great success as a trainer of horses, including Valegro, once described as the ‘Lionel Messi of the dressage world.' He has also mentored the rider Charlotte Dujardin, currently Britain's most successful female Olympian along with the cyclist Laura Kenny. He lives near Newent in Gloucestershire and says he hopes to compete at the Paris Olympics in 2024. Presenter Lauren Laverne Producer Sarah Taylor

We are excited to announce an exclusive interview with triple-gold medallist Charlotte Dujardin. The 35-year-old dressage superstar won the hearts of the British public at London 2012 with her ‘dancing horse’ Valegro, on whom she won double gold. The pair went on to become both World and European champions, break numerous records, and win a further gold and team silver at the Rio Olympics. In this interview Charlotte talks frankly about her life and her sport – the massive highs and crashing lows – and why she is still as hungry as ever for future medals and success. We find out how her nerves nearly got the better of her at Rio, and why being offered a job as a groom for Carl Hester 14 years ago changed her life forever. Charlotte also talks about: · The special bond between her and Valegro – why there will NEVER be another ‘Blueberry’ · What she looks for in a dressage horse · Her amazing new ride, the “pocket rocket” Gio (aka Pumpkin) · Her relationship with her friend and mentor Carl · The pressures of achieving so much in her sport, in such a short space of time. · Struggling with social media at the height of her success · Learning to be more in the moment and enjoy her achievements · Why she knows she will another Olympic gold medal We hope you enjoy listening to this podcast as much as we enjoyed making it. In this podcast we cover a whole range of subjects, including: Embarrassing himself at his first dressage competition The ups and down of British Dressage The secret of Charlotte Dujardin and Carl Hester’s success Learning from his experiences – getting older and wiser Trying to modernise the sport and the obstacles he faces The new World Cup Grand Prix format The psychology of judging Future ambitions with his horse Bubblingh Why it takes more than decent horse power to win medals Not putting too much pressure on results and just enjoying the whole process The Davison Equestrian empire - how his whole family is involved There was so much great content, which I had to whittle down into 50 mins for this podcast. Honest, passionate and generous. These are words that apply to both Vanessa Way and her trainer, friend and mentor Carl Hester. Vanessa's enthusiasm is infectious. She's driven and focused…and was kind enough to give me an interview a few months ago at the Sydney CDI. Vanessa is a star of the NZ dressage world having come back from a very nasty rotational fall back in her eventing days. Since then she's really focused on her dressage and has undertaken many stints with Carl in the UK. She talks about training programmes, the key to handling sharp, young horses, the importance of The Training Scale and getting horses' backs up and lifted. She still believes the bridle is quite misunderstood and as riders we must work harder for lightness of contact. And people…FIX YOUR HANDS…and give yourself time!!! So…what's it like to ride Nip Tuck and Valegro and what's it really like to train with Carl and Charlotte?! Hedge End dressage rider Olivia Oakeley (20) will be heading to Compiegne in France to compete for Britain at the Young Rider European Championships, 10 – 14 July 2013. She rides her own Dimaggio sired chestnut gelding Donna Summer, or ‘Rio’ to his friends. A member of the UK Sport funded World Class Development programme, Olivia is no stranger to representing her country as this will be her fourth consecutive Team GBR appearance having been on the Junior team in 2010 and 2011 and then on the Young Rider team last year. Olivia and ‘Rio’ have been partners since Olivia was just 13 and she’s produced him through the grades herself. Olivia has recently completed her studies as a Hartpury College scholar – see their video on her selection - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fZgtEc3Dfac. A delighted Olivia commented; “I’m really excited about this year’s Championships and to be selected for a fourth year running is a real achievement. None of what I’ve achieved would be possible without my ‘home team’ plus the support of World Class or my sponsors. It’s been a great season so far; I’ve managed to score personal bests in all the tests used at the Championships. My ultimate goal would be qualify for the Freestyle and improve on my 15th place from last year but a team medal would be exciting too! I’ve had two weeks of intensive training with Carl (Hester) and Rio has been going nicely so we’re ready to go to France.” The British Young Rider Team has had moderate success at the European Championships having brought home four medals, one silver and three bronze in its 30 year history. What the programme has done is help to produce medallist of the future with team gold and individual bronze Olympic medallist Laura Bechtolsheimer one of the notable ‘graduates. Other Brits who’ve gone on to win medals at senior level after young riders include Emma Hindle, Fiona Bigwood, Maria Eilberg and Sophie Wells. Along with team-mates Pippa Hutton, Samantha Thurman Baker and Eilidh Grant, Olivia sets off for Compiegne, some 40km north east of Paris on Monday ahead of the opening ceremony on Tuesday 9 July. The competition gets underway at the 10-hectare ‘Stade Equestre du Grand Parc’ with the Team test on Wednesday, continuing Thursday when the team medal will be decided. It’s then down to individual honours with two days of the individual test to qualify for a coveted freestyle place when the individual European Champion will be crowned on Sunday. Follow the action on http://dressageeurope.compiegne-equestre.com/ or British Dressage will be on Facebook and Twitter with updates.
