Many food and drink founders dream of landing their product on the shelves of the major supermarkets. But why do they make it so hard for Foodpreneurs to do so?In this episode of Foodpreneur with Chelsea Ford podcast, I chat with Allen Roberts, a former FMCG senior executive with food giants like Vegetable Oils which became Goodman Fielder, Cerebos the makers of Fountain Tomato Sauce and Dairy Farmers. Allen and I talk about the big issues for small brands when working with the majors and the multiples. We go beyond just speaking of the crippling price promotions asked of brand owners and retailers copying innovative products. We give insight into how to make it work, if this is the pathway you choose. If you've got the patience and willpower to commit to the long-game, it's ‘relatively' easy!
Allen Roberts returned home, annoyed. A man named Sam Wagner had set up an appointment with him to talk about purchasing some land. Allen had gone out to meet Sam, but the man never showed. Now Allen found himself back home and, strangely, alone. His wife, Martha “Doe” Roberts was nowhere to be found. That was unlike her. She never left the house without at least writing a note. And now for a note about our process. For this episode, Brandi copy and pasted from the best sources on the web. And sometimes Wikipedia. (No shade, Wikipedia. We love you.) Temple work may have slowed due to the pandemic, but temple-building is moving forward at an unprecedented pace. With The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announcing multiple new temples at each General Conference, architects are busy designing these holy edifices for locales ranging from Argentina to Zimbabwe and scores of places in between. Besides creating new temples, the Utah-based faith is also renovating 10 existing ones, including the iconic Salt Lake Temple. Just last week, the church unveiled a new look for the 1970s-era Provo Temple and its Space Age design, one members have had a sort of love-hate relationship with through the years. On this week's show, Allen Roberts — a Utah architect who specializes in preservation and has worked on Latter-day Saint chapels, tabernacles and temples — discusses designs for these sacred structures, each of which members view as a “House of the Lord.” He talks about how these temples are designed, the architectural styles that are employed, and reveals some of his favorites (19th-century temples like Manti and Logan top his list along with the ones in Cardston, Alberta, and Washington, D.C.) and some of his least favorites (the current Provo Temple, for instance).
DTRH Episode 37 How to Grow Your Business Profitably Ft. Mark Allen Roberts Growing a business generally involves a copious amount of debt, and rides the line, hovering from the black, red, and green constantly. Mark Roberts, who's masterful while working with enterprises and hyper-growth mid-market businesses to enable them to grow faster and maintain profitability while scaling. Profitably scaling operations is not an easy task, so learn from one of the best. Key Takeaways: Listen to your customers to understand how to best serve them: Get your customers to share their pain points. Ask them what their challenges are and what changes have occurred in their market's ecosystem. Doing so will give you the advantage of truly understanding their needs, and holds the key to how you need to improve and where to innovate or expand your offering. Proudly sell your product for what it's worth. Nothing more, nothing less: People often undervalue or discount their products and services to land new business, especially with smaller deals. Don't give in to the temptation of giving "buddy-buddy pricing" to accounts that are not consistent customers and/or big spenders, and have a damn good reason for doing so. Always and continuously nurture your relationships: Even if a prospect is not ready to buy yet, nurturing the relationship you have with them is critical to acquiring their business because a competitor can swoop in and steal the deal if you slip up. Sames goes with your existing clients. The better the relationship, the higher the sales volume. All good things come to those who nurture. 3.22.2021 (Season 2: Episode 16; 62 minutes) To read the show notes includng a listed of related materials and the guest's bio, click here -- Utah Department of Heritage and Arts' Speak Your Piece Podcast. Podcast Introduction: The Netflix documentary Murder Among the Mormons (released March 3, 2021, IMDb) has created much national interest, or should I say renewed national interest, in the story of murderer and master counterfeiter Mark W. Hofmann (professionally active 1978 to 1986). In this episode of Speak Your Piece, historian Allen D. Roberts -- who wrote the book Salamander: The Story of the Mormon Forgery Murders (1988) with former Deseret News reporter and historian Linda Buhler Sillitoe -- describes essential aspects of the Hofmann story that were not included (or maybe landed on the cutting room floor) in Murder Among the Mormons. Sillitoe's and Roberts' book Salamander was the first full length treatment on the subject, and endures today as the most complete, balanced and accurate, among the half dozen books written to explain, or defend, or to serve as exposé regarding this most complex 20th century Utah story. John Sillito -- Linda Sillitoe's husband (the different spelling is intentional) -- recounts in the podcast how Linda, who is now deceased, saw her purpose as writing for "her tribe, her people," who she believed needed to understand the whole complex, messy and uncomfortable story. She also felt that she and Robert's could "act as a translators" for those outside of their community, so they too could understand all the subtle aspects that someone outside might not understand or describe correctly. To purchase a copy of Linda Sillitoe's and Allen Roberts' book click her: Salamander: The Story of the Mormon Forgery Murders (Signature Books, 1988, 2nd edition) **** On KindleHofmann's apparently manipulated, deceived and defrauded his wife, parents, employees, investors, manuscript and rare book dealers, collectors, historians, curators, conservators and even America's most respected forgery specialists. Revered and respected institutions -- including the Library of Congress, National Archives, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints -- fared no better. I asked Roberts at the end of this episode, now some thirty-five years later, what he thought were Hofmann's motives, which were not entirely made clear in the documentary Murder Among the Mormons.

With so many people immersing themselves in sales, it is not surprising that a huge chunk of them cannot even close deals or only in it because of mere profit. For one to achieve successful sales, hiring people equipped with the right skills and mindset is needed. Ben Baker sits down with Mark Allen Roberts to talk about the right way salespeople should present pitches and start meaningful conversations. Mark Allen further explains how comprehensive assessments can help a lot in discovering individuals fit to enter sales and why adapting to technology is significant in keeping up with the industry's transition to the digital stage.

The world watched in horror this week as Notre Dame burned. Now, with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints poised to announce Friday the details of a massive renovation project for its iconic Salt Lake Temple, perhaps Mormonism’s Notre Dame, thoughts turn to the Utah-based faith’s sacred structures. Allen Roberts, a Utah architect who specializes in preservation, including work on Latter-day Saint chapels, tabernacles and temples, discusses the church’s historic buildings, their place in the design world and the faith’s high points and low points in preserving them.
Allen Roberts shares from 1Peter 5:5-11 about doing the right thing at the right time for the right reasons.
Allen Roberts shares from Mark 4:35-41 about dealing with the storms of life and Jesus being the Master of the Seas.
Allen Roberts shares from Psalm 142 about David calling on the Lord in his difficult times.
Dan Wotherspoon interviews Allen D. Roberts and Curt Bench about the lasting legacy of Mormon forger, con man, and murderer Mark Hofmann. Exactly twenty-five years ago, on the morning of 15 October 1985, Salt Lake City was rattled—both literally and psychologically—by the explosion of two bombs which each killed a person. The next day brought a third explosion, nearly killing Mark Hofmann, a well-known dealer in Mormon documents. Because of clues at that scene, investigators soon realized that perhaps Hofmann was not so much a third victim but the person actually responsible for all three bombs. In the course of the investigation, the tale of Mark Hofmann as a master forger and con artist began to unfold. In this podcast, we examine the long and complex legacy of these murders and forgeries, as well as their continued reverberations even today. Although it is still unclear if Hofmann’s intent was to bring down Mormonism through creating documents that challenged traditional presentations of early Church origins, he definitely was a serious student of Mormon history and knew where various controversies lay—which he then exploited through the forged letters and documents he produced. This case has also presented challenges to some Latter-day Saints because of Hofmann’s various meetings with Mormon general authorities who failed to detect that he was deceiving them, as well as because of the Church’s practice of sometimes obtaining controversial documents and then suppressing them. Joining Mormon Stories host Dan Wotherspoon to tell the story of these tragic murders and complex issues are two terrific guests: Allen Roberts, who co-authored with Linda Sillitoe the book Salamander: The Story of the Mormon Forgery Murders, which is widely regarded as the most thorough account of the Hofmann saga, and Curt Bench, who at the time of the bombings managed the Fine and Rare Books department of Deseret Book’s flagship store in downtown Salt Lake City in which he dealt regularly with Mark Hofmann and even considered him a friend. Linda, Allen, and Curt all ended up playing important roles in helping investigators ultimately make their case against Hofmann and untangle the threads that had led him to murder.

Allen Roberts shares from Psalm 142 about David calling on the Lord in his difficult times.
