Today opens with one of our favorite segments, Tara Bull's Top 10 News stories the Legacy/mainstream media didn't cover or didn't cover properly this past week. It's a fantastic way for us to run through the news from the past few days. Then we dive into a perfect example of why I tell you the Legacy/mainstream media is nothing more than the propaganda wing of the Democrat party. JD Vance addressed the school shooting on one of his campaign stops. While it was clear he was lamenting the state of our world where deranged psychopaths who crave to make headlines will look for soft targets to hit, the Associate Press made it sound like he was telling the audience that school shootings were a common occurrence and we just needed to get over it. That's how sick and evil the media really is. This leads me to talk more about the latest Russian Hoax perpetrated by the DOJ and the FBI. The more I thought about the whole notion that Russians thought funneling $10 million dollars would, in any way, have an impact on the election seems ludicrous. Plus, AG Garland himself said no one down the line, from the influencers to their subscribers, had any idea that money from Russia had been funneled into Tenet Media. There are way too many red flags for me to believe this is anything other than yet another hoax meant to manipulate voters and impact the election. If we just look at Harris's proposed tax increases, it's hard to imagine anyone voting for her. Her plan is meant to crash our economy and steal away the assets of the vast majority of Americans. She really believes all the money is hers and the rest of us should own nothing. So, to end with a bit of a laugh, I close with another installment of “Deep Thoughts with VP Kamala Harris.” This time, she wants to let us know about a remarkable word she discovered. That word is, “hypothesis.” And, assuming we are all 8 years old, takes a moment to tell you what a wonderful thing a hypothesis can be, unburdened by what has been. Allen Roberts returned home, annoyed. A man named Sam Wagner had set up an appointment with him to talk about purchasing some land. Allen had gone out to meet Sam, but the man never showed. Now Allen found himself back home and, strangely, alone. His wife, Martha “Doe” Roberts was nowhere to be found. That was unlike her. She never left the house without at least writing a note. Let's stop criticizing intuitive eating. In a world where intuitive eating has become a buzzword, it's crucial to sift through the chatter and truly understand what it means. We're not here to entertain misconceptions or misinterpretations of intuitive eating—those are a whole different story. Instead, we're bringing you a discussion that revolves around the insightful critiques of intuitive eating from individuals who genuinely respect and comprehend its principles. In this episode, I am chatting with Elyse Resch (her second time on the UDE podcast, by the way!). Elyse Resch, MS, RDN, CEDS-S, Fiaedp, FADA, FAND, is a nutrition therapist in private practice in California, with over forty years of experience, specializing in eating disorders, Intuitive Eating, and Health at Every Size. I love it when I can pick up a box when I can twist the top off of a bottle that nobody else can. I love being strong.” - Elyse Resch “They have to do with cortisol, with our stress. You may have heard about an illegal Chinese lab that was discovered in California housing dozens of deadly pathogens including Covid, tuberculosis, HIV and dengue fever. That's a pretty big deal, especially since Covid, so the corporate media dutifully covered it up: Nothing to see here. The Associate Press led the way, breathlessly claiming that “An illicit, Chinese-owned lab fueled conspiracy theories. But officials say it posed no danger”. See, no danger. All good. Other media organizations just parotted the Associate Press – despite the fact that there are at least 305 pages of court filings saying the opposite. Of course, reading 305 pages takes a lot of time and those 305 pages also contain a lot of uncomfortable truths, so the media just decided to stick to the official narrative. Well, not on this show. We dug into the facts and can now tell you the real story – and what a crazy story it is – a national scandal of epic proportions. ⭕️ Watch in-depth videos based on Truth & Tradition at Epoch TV
In a world where beauty is so often equated with thinness and weight loss with health, willpower, and virtue, Intuitive Eating gives us a different framework-one that emphasizes the beauty of body diversity and makes food freedom possible. In today's episode, I have the privilege of speaking with one of the co-creators of Intuitive Eating, Elyse Resch, MS, RDN, CEDS-S. Elyse is a nutrition therapist in private practice in Beverly Hills, California, with forty years of experience, specializing in eating disorders, Intuitive Eating, and Health at Every Size. She is the co-author of Intuitive Eating, now in its 4th edition, the Intuitive Eating Workbook, The Intuitive Eating Card Deck—50 Bite-Sized Ways to Make Peace with Food, The Intuitive Eating Workbook for Teens, and The Intuitive Eating Journal—Your Guided Journey for Nourishing a Healthy Relationship with Food. She is also a chapter contributor to The Handbook of Positive Body Image and Embodiment and her work has been profiled in outlets such NPR, CNN, NBC, KTTV, Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Associate Press, KFI Radio, USA Today, and the Huffington Post, among others. Elyse is nationally known for her work in helping patients break free from diet culture through the Intuitive Eating process. Her philosophy embraces the goal of reconnecting with one's internal wisdom about eating and believes that all bodies deserve dignity and respect. She also supervises and trains health professionals, is a Certified Eating Disorder Specialist and Supervisor, a Fellow of the International Association of Eating Disorder Professionals, and a Fellow of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. In my time with Elyse, we discuss what first drew her to the concept of Intuitive Eating, what Intuitive Eating is and how it differs from diet culture, sneaky ways diet culture is showing up these days, and how the concept of health can be expanded beyond weight. So, if you're curious about Intuitive Eating, making peace with food, or looking for a new way to connect with your body, this episode is for you.

Recent events have reminded us that we cannot always trust the police to protect us. In the U.S., though, bad policemen and women represent only a small minority of law enforcement. I feel I can turn to the police if I need help, and if I report a crime, I believe they will respond and investigate my claim. The police in Nome, Alaska, however, often did not take reports of sexual harassment seriously, especially claims made by Alaska Native women. Conflict has erupted again between Israel and Palestine, resulting in Israel's controversial choice in striking a residential building where Hamas operations purportedly were taking place. This week, we lead off with an update on the recent Colonial Pipeline ransomware attack, and why some media outlets have reported that the "business" of the hackers in question may be all washed up... or so they appear to be saying online. We also look at issues surrounding the CDC's updated advice about masks, and how this applies to children who have not been vaccinated. Finally, we turn our attention toward Israel's controversial choice in striking a residential building where Hamas operations purportedly were taking place, why it has not offered evidence yet in support of the attack, and why the Associate Press has also received criticism in the aftermath of the events. With the rollout of the first COVID-19 vaccine in the US this week, media coverage has been incessant about distrust of our medical industry in the black community. I've noticed very few of them actually talk about why. Medical racism. Have you heard of it? It's been around, it's an ongoing problem, and it's coming to light again with the treatment for COVID-19. Let's talk about a horrific moment in American history, a 1932 experiment called the “Tuskegee Study of Syphilis in the Negro Male”. Good morning and welcome to the Ben Garves Podcast - a daily show at the intersection of health, activism, and technology. I'm your host, Ben Garves. The best explanation of medical racism I've found is on the YWCA website. They write: “Medical racism is the systematic and wide-spread racism against people of color within the medical system. It includes both the racism in our society that makes Black people less healthy, the disparity in health coverage by race, and the biases held by healthcare workers against people of color in their care.”So, in 1932, the Tuskegee experiment began with 600 Black men, 399 who tested positive for syphilis, and 201 who didn't. It failed to tell those men they had syphilis, instead telling all 600 they were being treated for “bad blood”, which was a blanket term for a bunch of issues, like sickle cell anemia. The reality was, these men didn't receive proper medical treatment of the disease researchers knew they had, and the six-month experiment ended up running for 40 years. It wasn't until a story from the Associate Press in 1972 brought the study to light that a panel began to investigate. They found the men in the study had been misled and weren't given enough information to give real informed consent for their treatment. Here's an example: penicillin, the antibiotic used to very easily treat syphilis, became widely used in 1947 and was never offered to the study's test subjects. That's dark. It's terrible. And it's really just one story in a long list of behaviors in the United States which have fostered mistrust within the Black community. In 1966, Henry K. Beecher published a paper documenting 22 instances of unethical medical research in the New England Journal of Medicine, including Tuskegee.Blind studies, basically studies where the recipient of a treatment doesn't know if they're receiving the treatment or a placebo, are important to proving if a treatment is effective and safe. But we need to ask questions about whether they're ethical in a situation where we're testing on a specific race or ethnic background, if we're testing on a group which has been abused in the past, and if that testing continues when a viable cure is found without adjusting the experiment to inform the doctors, researches, and study participants about what's going on.That wraps it up for today. Thanks for listening to the Ben Garves Podcast, at the intersection of health, activism, and technology. Don't forget, Fitness is for Everyone™.The CDC has a write up on the Tuskegee study and the work related to it on their website, so I'm putting a link to that in my show notes, which you can find in your podcasting app or on bengarves.com. As young professionals we are fueled with incentive - motivated to learn, eager for the next promotion and excited by new challenging experiences. This path however, is always non-linear. There are sidesteps, peaks, pits, pivots and in most cases redirects, add the false realities social media contributes and this leaves so many feeling career defeat. Here’s the truth, the real and raw snapshots are those years in between, many of us go through it, but few are willing to share the stories that landed them on the other side. Featured on Fox’s Good Day LA, in Women's Health Magazine, The Associate Press and more, we talk to entrepreneur, Marni Chaikin who has embraced the art of career navigation. She shares her incredibly personal and private pivots, but remains grateful for each of those experiences. Today she has transformed those lessons into helping others at scale. Everyone is locked up in their houses now or something, and what choice do we have? So we’ll talk about social distancing and creativity – Creative Social Distancing? – we’ll give a call to Ethan from Cameradactyle, talk about wire photos and what they have to do with a James Stewart movie, and zine reviews. After a sort of meandering wellness check (including a talk about an exhibition Vania’s in), we hit the answering machine!I Hate Your Answering MachineWe asked listeners to call in and tell us how social distancing has effected their creativity. The array of answers was encouraging. Despite being closed in and often separated from friends and photolabs, our listeners have got their collective shit together. Some are building darkrooms, one is building a camera out of his bedroom (like the entire room), another is perfecting old and forgotten color chemistry, some are still working in the healthcare field and use photography to keep them going.Lots of people are being creative in lots of ways. But it’s also important to remember that we don’t need to be creative now. It’s okay to not be. It’s okay to not be able to be.Shoot Inside Challenge ThingThat said, we’re offering a way for you to stay creative if you want to – and to do it indoors. For those who like challenges and being tasked with things, we’ve got the Shoot Inside Challenge Thing for you! Each episode as this whole virus thing blows over, we’ll give you a challenge. This isn’t a contest. There’s no winners. But we will judge you silently.See what you can come up with. Then after you dev the shots, tag us and we’ll feature them. #allthroughalensathomeFor this episode, let’s try…-Natural light – pick five random things from your house and take a still life with them interacting in natural light. Points for absurdity.InterviewOn this episode, we checked in with Ethan from Cameradactyl. We talk about 3D printing medical parts, new cameras, new camera ideas and the movie Call Northside 777.There’s a lot going on in his shop these days, and we talk about a good fair amount of it.Sending Photos By WireInspired by the Jimmy Stewart movie Call Northside 777 (1948), we dig into the history of the wirephoto – actual photographs sent over telephone wires long before the internet. We explore the early attempts at this, starting with etchings encoded and sent via telegraphs. But soon we’re mentioning names like Arthur Korn and Édouard Belin. And when Western Union, AT&T and the Associate Press get into the game, all bets are off! Here’s a quick rundown on how all of this worked:After the print was ready, it would be attached to a cylinder on the transmitter. This cylinder would spin 100rpm under a more modern photocell. A small lamp would shine a very small light onto the print, which would be reflected back onto the photocell. The cell, as before, would turn the array of gray tones into signals that could be transmitted across telephone wires to a receiver. This receiver held a piece of photopaper on its cylinder. As it spun at 100rpm, the signals coming across the wire would be translated back into light. The varying lights and darks were exposed to photopaper making a positive print. Reproducing the entire photo took around 10 to 17 minutes.By the end of the decade, these transmitters were made small and basically portable, fitting in a large suitcase. All that had to be done was to tap into an existing phone line and send the photo to a receiver near a darkroom. The wreckage of a small plane lies in a wooded area near Morehousville, N.Y., Dec. 31, 1934 after a crash landing three days earlier. The four people aboard were reportedly not seriously injured. This photo is believed to be the first photo transmitted to Associated Press members on the AP wirephoto network, Jan. 1, 1935. (AP Photo)Zine ReviewsBefore going into the zine reviews, we talk about our quick adventure to Polacon San Francisco! But then we get into the zine reviews, hitting two zines that we picked up that weekend. We review Big Shot Portraits by Jaya Bhat and Before My Eyes compilation zine, which you can get here (probably).Kenny RogersWe lost Kenny Rogers recently, who also happened to be a large format photographer. Here’s the original article about his photography that everyone keeps referencing and not linking back to.Rogers started as a kid with a Kodak Brownie Hawkeye and eventually traded up to a Hasselblad. He got really serious about it when he picked up a Linhof Master Technika 4×5. He published a book of landscapes and then moved onto 8×10, he shot portraits with that mostly, publishing two additional books from those. And that’s the show!Be sure to check out our Dev Party episodes. On this episode of the Sofa King Podcast, we take a look at a modern day conspiracy theory that turns out to be true—the AIDS drug trials conducted on foster children. These were a series of as many as 48 different trials spread through seven different states in the US. They were very dangerous Phase I and Phase II drug trials that were performed on children with AIDS or HIV. The really nasty part is that many of the kids didn’t have any legal advocate, and when they wanted to stop the drug trials, they weren’t allowed. Some were even force fed with feeding tubes surgically inserted into their stomachs. This story came out in 2005 thanks to reporting done by Jamie Doran of the BBC (see show notes below for the Guinea Pigs documentary link) and John Solomon from the Associate Press. While the trials were done on children in multiple locations, the worst of it was in New York City. Thanks to then Mayor Giuliani, a group called the Administration for Children's Services (ACS) was created. This monster of an organization was gifted with the power to take children away from parents for simply refusing medical treatment. And they did. In the 1990s, they started to take away infected children from biological and legal parents simply for not giving them dangerous, sometimes untested drugs. Not giving them the drugs made them “abusive” parents, so the kids were taken from them and placed in foster homes such as the Catholic church owned Incarnation Children’s Center. From the Catholic group home to prestigious research hospitals to academic institutions and the giant pharma companies, everyone was complicit. They denied children their legal rights, took them from their parents, and filled their bodies with Black Label, dangerous drugs. How many kids were involved? What percent were foster kids? What legal protections do parents have against getting their kids taken away? What happened to the kind-hearted nurse who tried to help? Listen, laugh, learn. In what is supposed to be a defining day in the 2020 presidential campaign, we are left with an uncertain mess. The candidates, now in New Hampshire ahead of next week's primary, not knowing if they're winners or losers due to technical issues with the count. Iowa's Democratic party, holding a conference call with the campaigns this hour, says delayed caucus results should come later today. In the meantime, frustration, anger and plenty of spin from the candidates. And President Trump, hoping to look past impeachment and ahead to the 2020 election in tonight's State of the Union speech. Today's panel: Seung Min Kim and Rachael Bade with The Washington Post, Julie Pace with the Associate Press, and Julie Hirschfeld Davis with The New York Times. Also on the program: CNN's Leyla Santago and Jeff Zeleny.
On this episode of the Sofa King Podcast, we travel back in time to look at one of the earliest events of UFO history, the Foo Fighters of World War Two. Before a grunge band took the name, it was a term used by the US Army to describe unexplained phenomenon that pilots saw over various battle fronts in the war. From the Pacific to Africa, Germany to the Mediterranean, these strange lights in the sky were seen. What’s even more strange is that they were reported by not only US troops but by the Brits, Germans, Italians, and Japanese as well as others. So what did the pilots see when they reported Foo Fighters? They were typically lights that looked like multi colored fire floating in the sky near aircraft that were flying night missions (though sometimes the lights formed shapes like a T or were cigar shaped). The Foo Fighters changed course to keep apace of the airplanes. They sped up, slowed down, and at times seemed to play with the pilots. The airmen who saw these came to the conclusion that they were under intelligent control. None of the pilots thought they were alien in origin, but some sort of Axis weapon, aircraft, or surveillance device, so they took the presence of Foo Fighters seriously. Though they were spotted all through the war, the thing that made them the most famous was a string of sightings from the 415th Night Fighter Squadron in 1944. This squad gave them their name, based on an old comic strip. In fact, an embedded Associate Press reporter for the 415th is the one who made the sightings known to a larger audience when he published an article about the Foo Fighters. So what were these strange UFOs? Many theories run from them being pilot fatigue to St. Elmo’s Fire to a German device (such as the Wernher von Braun’s V2 Rocket or something called a Feuerball), but none of these quite fit the unique characteristics of the Foo Fighters and their behavior in the air. If you love yourself some World War Two, Nazi Tech, and UFOs, this is the one for you! On this episode of the B&H Photography Podcast, we welcome neuropsychiatrist Anthony Feinstein, and the Director of Editorial Content at Adobe, Santiago Lyon, to discuss Feinstein’s latest book Shooting War. “What makes a person choose a profession in which they know that scores of their colleagues, some of them friends, will be killed each year, while hundreds of other colleagues will be arrested and some will go missing, never to be found? Why choose a profession that entails running toward grave danger while those around you flee from it? If you can answer these questions, you begin to gain insight into the complex world of frontline journalists.” The above paragraph begins the profile of Santiago Lyon in Shooting War, and provides an apt summary for our own episode. We discuss the motivations that drive photographers to cover war, as well as the consequences to their physical, psychological, and emotional health they face. Feinstein brings his years of clinical work studying the effects of war on journalists and Lyon adds insight from his personal experiences as a conflict photographer and editor. Of course, we also discuss the research that went into the making of the book, and Feinstein relates the experiences of several of the photographers mentioned in his book. Anthony Feinstein is professor of Psychiatry at the University of Toronto. He has authored a series of seminal studies exploring the psychological effects of conflict on journalists, including Journalists Under Fire and Battle Scarred, and is a Guggenheim fellow. The 2012 documentary, Under Fire, is based on his research and won a Peabody Award. Prior to his position at Adobe, Lyon was Director of Photography at The Associate Press and a respected photojournalist who covered conflicts in Latin America, the Balkans, Afghanistan, and Somalia. As an editor at AP, he led teams that earned Pulitzer Prizes on three different occasions. He is one of eighteen photographers profiled in Shooting War. Join us for this powerful episode. Xinhua News Agency and The Associate Press have pledged to further enhance their innovative cooperation in the digitalization of traditional media. Xinhua President Cai Mingzhao and AP CEO Cary Pruitt made the pledge on the sidelines of the third World Media Summit held in the Qatari capital Doha. Cai said Xinhua and The AP have already made numerous explorations in digital migration for media groups, adding that Xinhua values its cooperation and exchanges with The AP in the face of their common challenges from the Internet. Since 2015, Xinhua has made a number of experimental attempts, including introducing robot systems to draft news stories and launching on-scene news via Xinhua's application on mobile phones. The efforts have enabled reporters to do live reporting with hand-held devices. He also said what Xinhua is trying to do is to bring readers to the scene where news is happening, yet there are always limits to today's news coverage, whether it is in the form of text, pictures or videos. Xinhua expects to enhance their cooperation with The AP in media innovation. For his part, Pruitt said The AP has observed and admired the innovation at Xinhua and how much Xinhua has done to integrate and bring digital platforms to it. He said The AP recognizes the need for innovation, and is looking forward to deepening its partnership with Xinhua. This is Special English. China is preparing to launch a Mars probe in 2020, and it is expected to arrive at the red planet the following year. An aerospace expert said that although China is not the first Asian nation to send a probe to Mars, it wants to start at a higher level. Ye Peijian is an academic of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and leader of the team with the China Academy of Space Technology. Ye said the probe will include an orbiter, a lander and a rover. The orbiter will conduct global surveys of Mars; and the entry device will land a rover on the surface. Parachute and reverse thrust engine technology will probably be used in the landing. He said although there is less than five years to go till the launch, they are confident. The probe is being developed by the team that completed the Chang'e-3 lunar probe. A 3D demonstration video from the academy shows how the Mars probe will fly around 10 months before closing on the red planet. Controllers on Earth will guide it into a large elliptical orbit and the orbiter and lander will separate. The orbiter will stay in orbit for at least a year to photograph key areas and monitor the planet's environment. You're listening to Special English. I'm Mark Griffiths in Beijing. Three Chinese nationals have received top honors from the British Council when it handed out the 2016 Education UK Alumni Awards in Beijing. Nine alumni of British universities were among the finalists for the awards, having stood out from more than 800 applicants from across China. Ling Yifan is a cartoonist who graduated from Birmingham City University. She received a Professional Achievement Award. Ling has published more than 20 comic books in China and abroad, and three of the books have won international awards. Her online comic story, Guarding, has been read by more than 100 million people and was adapted into a film. Ling said she benefited a great deal from her studies in the United Kingdom, which helped improve her artistic skills and added to her confidence. Xiao Dun, who obtained a master's degree at the University of Cambridge, received the Entrepreneurial Award for his success in co-founding a company that develops educational mobile apps, and for an online homework platform he established for more than 15 million students. Xiao said his experience at Cambridge enhanced his leadership and sense of business, which played a key role in his career to become a successful entrepreneur. Zheng Jianwei, a visually impaired English teacher, won the Social Impact Award. Zheng was the first among his visually impaired peers in southwestern China to have taken an English language proficiency test, the International English Language Testing System, and then studied in the UK. Carma Elliot, director of the British Council China, said the excellent alumni shared one similarity: their education experience in the UK laid a solid basis for their success in different fields and enabled them to inspire younger generations. China now has around 600,000 students who returned from the UK after graduation. This is Special English. More than 300 students from various Mexican universities as well as entrepreneurs, diplomats, lawmakers and journalists have been invited to the Chinese Embassy to celebrate the annual Chinese Culture Day. The Chinese ambassador to Mexico Qiu Xiaoqi hailed the curiosity of Mexicans about Chinese culture and said many young people in China are also interested in getting to know about Mexico. The ambassador explained that it is important to hold the Chinese Culture Day in Mexico as it helps to bring new generations of people from both countries closer together. This was the fourth Chinese Culture Day in Mexico. The event opened the door to sharing different forms of Chinese artistic expression with the public. The four-hour-event included dances, Chinese and local cuisine, a fashion show, and a concert by Chinese singer Pu Jie, who combined Chinese songs with interpretations of Mexican classics. Former Mexican ambassador to China Sergio Ley Lopez said at the party that such events are needed as Mexicans know little about modern China; and such events are a treasure, which can lead to a greater understanding in every way between the two countries. People living in small cities generally enjoy better sleep than those in larger ones in China, and negative emotions are the biggest contributor to sleep disorders. According to a report released ahead of World Sleep Day, which fell on Monday, negative emotions are a major obstacle to quality sleep for people in China. The China Sleep Quality Index 2016 was released by consultant firm Dataway, together with a leading mattress producer. The research was based on feedback between January and March to online questionnaires sent to Internet users in 30 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions. Those surveyed had an average sleep index of 69 out of a possible 100, indicating an overall gap in the quality of sleep for Chinese people. The sleep index was based on seven sub-indices, including the ability to fall asleep quickly, the ability to have regular sleeping hours and the ability to control emotions. Respondents scored 50 in their ability to control emotions, ranking the lowest of all seven sub-indices. That means negative emotions were the biggest contributor to bad sleep. The report also showed that residents of bigger cities in general had slightly worse sleep. People living in first-tier cities including Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou averaged 67 in the index, while those in middle-sized and small cities averaged 70. You're listening to Special English. China has entered its flood season, 11 days earlier than previous years. The State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters said heavy rains have hit parts of south China, pushing water levels in some rivers well above warning lines. The National Meteorological Center forecast that strong rain will continue to pelt south China. It urged relevant departments to strengthen disaster prevention. The center said some provinces will be hit by rain or storms, with maximum rainfall reaching up to 50 millimeters per hour. The center issued a blue alert for rainstorms in southern regions on Monday night, warning that people should be alert for possible risks including mud-rock flows and landslides. China has a four-tier warning system for severe weather, with red being the most serious, followed in turn by orange, yellow and blue. This is Special English. The first stage of fieldwork has been completed for a project to help preserve China's ethnic minority languages and dialects, including some on the verge of being wiped out. Specialists from the Ministry of Education worked in 80 fieldwork sites in ethnic minority regions and 50 sites with different Chinese dialects to help preserve the languages by collecting and documenting their use. The ministry and the State Language Commission launched the project in May with the goal of collecting and preserving the languages. The five-year-project is also designed to augment and streamline the current multi-media database of Chinese languages compiled in 2008. In 2015, the preservation project began from places where dialects and ethnic minority languages are in dire need of conservation, including the provinces of Shanxi, Zhejiang and Fujian, as well as Chongqing municipality. The project will expand to cover more localities. The Ministry of Education has urged local governments to build up their regional museums of language culture. You're listening to Special English. Could falling oil prices actually be a good thing for certain industries in Houston? If Houston is doing well why is there such a large unbanked or under banked population compared to the rest of the country? We explored both of these questions on a new monthly segment with Houston Business Journal's Legal and Money Reporter, Suzanne Edwards. Edwards most recently comes from Shanghai, China, where she was an editor at SinoMedia and, before that, a contributor to China Economic Review. Edwards is an Austin native and interned at the Austin Business Journal, an affiliated publication. She began her journalism career as an intern at the Associate Press' Rome bureau. Edwards graduated from The University of Texas at Austin and majored in journalism, as well as Asian cultures and languages. In addition to English, she speaks Mandarin, as well as Italian and Spanish. Edwards will focus her coverage for HBJ on following Houston's thriving financial industry, including banks, credit unions, wealth management, philanthropy, venture capital, private equity and more. She also will cover the highly competitive law sector in Houston, where expansions and M&A continue at a rapid pace. We discussed alternatives to payday loans such as credit blind programs that lend to indivduals without actually checking credit. We discussed Financial Literacy in the workplace and how financial health can be related to physical health. Adam, 35, served as a Marine Corps officer for 10 years, rehabilitating war and disaster ravaged populations in Iraq, Afghanistan, and South Asia. He also supported the Navy Marine Corps Relief Society financial wellness programs - which have successfully counseled troops into better financial behavior and away from predatory lenders. He believes the work done by the military relief societies to recover troops who were overwhelmed by their expenses and debt should be continued in the private sector. Adam is an alumnus of John Hopkins University and the Stanford Graduate School of Business.
