On December 9, 1988, Joan Bernal and her family were preparing to leave their home in Joliet, Illinois, and head to Texas to visit her husband’s parents for the holidays. Things didn’t go as planned, and they were only able to bring one of their children. According to Joan’s husband Gil, they left the following morning, and Joan asked to be let out of the car in Oklahoma. She wanted to go back home and try to get her children from a previous relationship and bring them to Texas. Gil stated that he dropped her off near a McAlester, Oklahoma bus stop, and gave her some cash to get back to Illinois. Joan Bernal has never been seen or heard from again. Andrew Jackson lost the 1824 presidential election to John Quincy Adams through what some called a “corrupt bargain” in the House of Representatives. The maneuver was masterminded by hot-headed but politically savvy Henry Clay, who with Adams, announced their intent for far-reaching new federal programs. Fierce opposition to these policies united pro-Jackson supporters who formed a new party, the Democrats, to rally around their hero and elect him to president in 1828.But while Adams was defeated, Henry Clay had no intention of leaving the fight. He helped lead a new party which gathered together anti-Jackson, fiscal conservatives, and pro-states rights factions. During the July 4th holiday in 2006, 18-year-old Roxanne Paltauf left home to spend a few days celebrating her anniversary with her boyfriend, a much older man with a lengthy criminal history. The couple checked into a hotel in Austin, Texas, which was the last time Roxanne was ever seen. Her boyfriend later stated that the two got into an argument, and she left with nothing but her state identification. He claimed that he looked for her prior to calling her mother the next day to inform her that Roxanne was missing. Roxanne's family immediately knew something was wrong and alerted the authorities. While all signs seemed to point to her boyfriend, another man later became a person of interest as well.
