On the show this week, Chris Hedges discusses the peculiar pathology of the rich and our oligarchic state with Chris Lehmann, editor-at-large for The New Republic. “The rich are different from us,” F. Scott Fitzgerald is said to have remarked to Ernest Hemingway, to which Hemingway allegedly replied, “Yes, they have more money.” The exchange, although it never took place, sums up a wisdom Fitzgerald had that eluded Hemingway. The rich are different. The cocoon of wealth and privilege permits the rich to turn those around them into compliant workers, hangers-on, servants, flatterers, and sycophants. Wealth breeds, as Fitzgerald illustrated in ‘The Great Gatsby' and his short story “The Rich Boy,” a class of people for whom human beings are disposable commodities. Colleagues, associates, employees, kitchen staff, servants, gardeners, tutors, personal trainers, even friends and family, bend to the whims of the wealthy or disappear. “They were careless people, Tom and Daisy,” Fitzgerald wrote of the wealthy couple at the center of Gatsby's life. “They smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness, or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made.” Aristotle, Niccolò Machiavelli, Alexis de Tocqueville, Adam Smith, and Karl Marx all began from the premise there is a natural antagonism between the rich and the masses. “Those who have too much of the goods of fortune, strength, wealth, friends, and the like, are neither willing nor able to submit to authority,” Aristotle wrote in ‘Politics.' “The evil begins at home; for when they are boys, by reason of the luxury in which they are brought up, they never learn, even at school, the habit of obedience.” Oligarchs, these philosophers knew, are schooled in the mechanisms of manipulation, subtle and overt repression, and exploitation to protect their wealth and power at our expense. Foremost among their mechanisms of control is the control of ideas. Never Have I Ever... left an unaired podcast episode in drafts for over a year due to a global pandemic! Little did we know that our time with that masterpiece was limited.  On a trickier note, Natalie is struggling with the pressure of expectation to like a piece of media that friends recommend due to their emotional attachment to it, a situation that can be difficult as both the pusher and the pushee, and Brittany brings to light the sad reality that we're all struggling with our reading speeds these days.  **Here's the deal, folks. Back in the first lockdown, we recorded two episodes back to back - one specifically focusing on the growing issues of COVID and one escapist one, completely avoiding talking about COVID. Due to the State of Things in 2020, the Coronavirus special quickly - as in, within a few days - became dated and not appropriate to air any more, so we canned the two-part special. However THIS part, the "No-rona" partner half, is, upon re-listening, actually fine and relatively evergreen, aside from the part where Prodigal Son has since been rudely and cruelly cancelled. Ray grew up in Palmdale, CA and promised himself he would get out as soon as he could. Music filed his house as a child, the only mixed kid in his family  as he grew up music became his solace when he'd feel like the outsider of his family. Listening to the local hip hop stations at the peak of west coast hip hop, Ray aspired to work in radio; and his blue collar parents supported his dreams. The first person in his family to go to college, Ray attended USC. Although high school was a breeze, college was a rude awakening there was a lot of partying and poor grades. He received a DUI along the same time, which led Alba to getting back on the straight path and stop drinking. He'd get kicked out of USC twice. But during a communications class, Ray let his goal of wanting to work in the music industry be known. A classmate remembered this and at the end of the semester, passed his resume along to people at Interscope records. He's never looked back.Ray's academic woes in school leading to his expulsion from the USC led to the end of his internship. Causing Ray to live out his worst nightmare, of being back in Palmdale working at Office Depot. He still kept in touch with people at Interscope and would temp periodically. But when a desk job opened up, he jumped at the chance. He got his shot in the Publicity department, where he was the assistant to Greg Miller who was looking after the careers of Rich Boy, Soulja Boy, and The Game. Where he'd set up interviews for talent while they toured. Driven by the fear of failure, Ray was always waiting for the shoe to drop and doing the wrong thing, he learned that mistakes are okay, just don't make it a habit. Ray built a reputation for being the hip hop head around the office.
