Look around you. What do you see? A lot of stuff? Material objects? Now, think about where those things are going to go after they have served their purpose. We're willing to bet that most of those items will end up in a landfill or in the ocean. Our system, as it stands, follows a linear path of waste management where an item is produced, used, and thrown away. We humans are more innovative than that. We can work to blaze that linear path into a circle. Angela Abshier, Founder of Sail to Shelter, joins Jenna for this episode of the Sea Change Podcast to discuss just that, innovating solutions to give new life to materials that were destined for a landfill. Sail to Shelter is a nonprofit organization working to extend the utility of high performance sails by thinking of them like a building material. Together with architects, engineers, sailmakers, and fabric technicians, they are creating solutions for the ever growing humanitarian crises occurring around the world. Special thanks to Leslie Ewing, host of Shorewords! on the American Shoreline Podcast Network, for connecting Angela and Jenna. Angela and Leslie crossed paths through The Explorers Club, where Angela was recently selected into this year's group of the Explorer's Club 50, highlighting 50 people changing the world.

For years now, US Presidents have proclaimed June to be National Ocean Month. This sparked host, Tamara Kahn, to wonder if people really understand the role of government in supporting the Blue economy and the oceans at the heart of it. On this episode of Wave Makers, Tamara is honored to speak with Rear Admiral Tim Gallaudet, PhD, US Navy (ret). Tim has a great depth of knowledge having served as Former Assistant Secretary of Commerce and Deputy NOAA Administrator, Oceanographer of the Navy and now a consultant with many incredible Blue Technology companies. He is an ocean advocate, policy expert and even holds a PhD from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Doesn't that seem a perfect person to talk to about how public agencies and private ocean tech enterprises work together for the betterment of our country and its citizens while working to protect and preserve the ocean resources we depend on? Listen to hear Tim and Tamara discuss the importance of public-private cooperation and learn about some of NOAA's focus areas that Tim helped define. Of course, they get into a few of the fascinating blue tech companies that Tim works with and why they matter to our everyday lives. Perhaps most importantly, the discussion touches upon cooperation, diversity and passion in the industry and how Tim is also utilizing podcasting to promote The American Blue Economy and those working to advance it. What is the impact of our passion and what do we leave behind? This episode is centered around the life, work, and legacy of our friend, classmate, and fisheries researcher Anja Sjostrom who passed away in an accident in early January. This episode is meant to serve as an introduction to her work and what drove her to study her passion: the ocean, all the things that live inside it, and the people who are heavily connected and dependent on this resource. We are joined by her mother Natalie Cargill, her Ph.D. advisor at East Carolina University Cindy Grace-McCaskey, and her advisors in her Master's program at Oregon State University, professors Flaxen Conway and Lorenzo Ciannelli. Anja's life was centered around the ocean, her curiosity, empathy and ability to connect with people from various backgrounds lead her to a very impressive career at the nexus of social sciences and ecology. She is leaving a huge gap in our hearts, the science community and the world but we are thankful for having had the opportunity to meet such a beautiful soul. Please consider donating to the Anja Sjostrom Memorial Scholarship in Coastal Sciences to help young researchers like Anja to continue this important work to give underserved communities a voice in ocean management. We want to thank our partners at the American Shoreline Podcast Network and The Coastal Society for this opportunity, and our community for the support and love we have received during this incredibly difficult time.

Robert Jones welcomes to the Seafoodie podcast Chef PJ Stoops, co-author of Texas Seafood: A Cookbook and Comprehensive Guide, to talk about the rich diversity of the Gulf of Mexico fishery, how we use and misuse this precious resource, and the intersection of fishing, food, harvest practices, and culture. Andrew Zimmern, James Beard Award-winning TV personality, chef, and author, described the book this way: “PJ and Benchalak Stoops have written the definitive book on the seafood that comes out of the Gulf. The recipes are superb and the food is glorious, but the bigger message is the one that is vital to the national discourse: our planet is in the midst of a global food and climate crisis. Eating locally, cooking less popular species of smaller fish, and broadening our vision of what seafood on our plate looks like is a lasting legacy that makes Texas Seafood one of the most important cookbooks of this or any year.” PJ's route to award-winning chef, author, and culinary revolutionary has been a circuitous. After majoring in English and Philosophy at the University of Texas, Stoops bounced around restaurants in Austin, France, and Thailand, where he met his wife, Apple. He launched a seafood distribution company out the back of his car well before “bycatch” became a buzzword and successfully introduced Almaco jacks and Pink Porgies to some of Texas’s best restaurants. With his wife and co-author, Benchalak Srimart "Apple" Stoops, the Stoopses founded Foreign Correspondent, a farm-to-table Thai eatery in Houston named one of Bon Appétit’s Best New Restaurants in 2015. PJ was also the driving force behind Houston’s “Total Catch Market,” a regular event that sold bycatch seafood from the Gulf of Mexico. The abundance of seafood available from the northwest Gulf of Mexico includes hundreds of delicious species that are often overlooked by consumers. Robert Jones and PJ Stoops explore this complex issue, how we can use seafood more sustainably, reduce the tremendous waste of bycatch, and still enjoy beautiful wild-caught seafood. There is a better way. Find out how on this episode of the Seafoodie podcast with Robert Jones. Only on the American Shoreline Podcast Network.

Dolphins, manatees and even a few whale sharks succumbed to the dastardly blooms. And, coastal businesses dependent on tourism -- like hotels, fishing guides, restaurants and bars -- fared poorly too. Millions of dollars in business profits and local taxes evaporated into the stink-filled air. Dr. James Sullivan -- nicknamed "Dr. Doom of the Algal Bloom" by his wife -- is a leading algal researcher and Executive Director of Florida Atlantic University’s Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute. He is also the boss of the newly formed Florida Center for Coastal & Human Health at FAU and was recently appointed to the Governor's Blue-Green Algae Task Force. Florida is looking to science to tackle the menace of harmful algal blooms, a good move, and you can hear first hand from one of the experts. many believe the blooms will continue and may get worse and, if so, tough choices are ahead for Florida and other coastal states. He walks us through the science, the risks, and how to understand our changing coastal waters. Great show. Only on the American Shoreline Podcast Network.

Tony McNeal has served the Florida Department of Environmental Protection for 34 years and will be retiring in 2020 as the Administrator of the Coastal Construction Control Line Program that regulates construction along Florida's 825 miles of coastline. It is a huge job, high stakes, and occasionally -- maybe more than occasionally -- contentious. Tony was the CCL Program lead for 20 years during his tenure at FDEP, a remarkable accomplishment. Mike Barnett, former Chief of the FDEP Bureau of Beaches and Coastal Systems, nominated Tony for this prestigious award, and joins Tony on the American Shoreline Podcast. It's a long back from two of Florida's best known and respected state agency professionals. We talk about Tony's career in public service, the tough decisions coastal regulators face, and what it takes to handle this challenging job so successfully and for so long. Congratulations Tony from Coastal News Today and the American Shoreline Podcast Network and thank you for all the years of leadership, hard work, and judgement to protect the beaches and dunes of Florida.

On the American shoreline, there are an army or professional consultants that design, evaluate, assess, permit. and build coastal projects -- everything from hotels, to houses, to parks and beaches. Peter Ravella, co-host of the American Shoreline Podcast (his co-host, Tyler Buckingham, is at a Ukrainian wedding and will be back next week) sits down with two women to discuss what it takes to make it in the highly competitive world of coastal consulting. Lois Edwards and Kim Colstad, two pros who dedicate their time to coastal resource protection and project permitting, left the comfy confines of a big firm to strike out on their own, forming Ardea Environmental Consulting in Ft. Pierce, Florida. Now co-owners of their own company, find out how these two fierce and dedicated women have found the balance, the work, and happiness as coastal consulting professionals. It's a great story. And, as a bonus, they talk about how to make the business work, how to keep clients happy, and the value of relationships and trust in serving their clients while protecting the environment. One of the best conversations from the FSBPA conference. Enjoy it. Only on the American Shoreline Podcast Network!
