In this episode of Word Balloon, I sit down with longtime DC writer and historian Bob Rozakis for a deep dive into his Bronze Age experiences writing Robin, Teen Titans, Superman, and more during one of the most transitional eras in comics history. Bob reflects on crafting character-driven stories at a time when DC was recalibrating its identity, sharing behind-the-scenes insight into working with iconic heroes while balancing continuity, editorial demands, and the evolving tastes of readers in the 1970s and early '80s. From Robin back-ups to Titans team drama and Superman tales, Bob paints a vivid picture of what it was like working inside DC when the Bronze Age was firing on all cylinders. We also revisit one of the most unique chapters in DC lore, when Bob literally drove the DC Comics promotional “mobile” around New York and New Jersey hand-selling books like a Good Humor ice cream man.He shares stories of being there when Christopher Reeve judged a Superman movie contest at DC, capturing that moment when comics and Hollywood suddenly collided in a big way. Bob offers candid memories of the DC Implosion. What it felt like from the inside as titles were slashed and uncertainty hit the staff, and how creators adapted during a turbulent stretch in the company's history. We also discuss his fascinating alternate-history essays published in Alter Ego, where Bob imagines a world in which DC and All-American Comics never consolidated the way they did. It's a smart, playful exploration of “what if” publishing scenarios from someone who knows the real history inside and out.

[27:20] In this episode Greg Gazin welcomes back longtime contributor and speech delivery coach Bill Brown for a conversation that reflects back and shares lessons learned from more than a decade of writing for the Toastmaster magazine. A Toastmaster for nearly 20 years Bill has become a familiar name to readers through The Toastmasters Toolbox, The Answer Man, and dozens of feature articles written since 2014. This episode coincides with Bill’s final Answer Man column and his reflective December 2025 article, “Lessons from the Toastmaster: Discover What I Have Learned as a Writer for the Magazine.” Bill describes how a simple hallway chat with former magazine editor Jennie Harris unexpectedly launched what would become a plethora of articles—including nine years of monthly columns.Greg revisits Bill’s earlier podcast appearances as well, including Episode #206, “Receiving Feedback: A Valuable Skill You Can Improve On,” (June 2022) where Bill explored the under-discussed art of accepting and applying feedback. That theme re-emerges here as Bill talks about how editorial guidance helped him adapt his writing for a global audience—learning to “think like a listener” and write more universally.Listeners will hear Bill discuss:How writing strengthened his speaking, helping him craft tighter messages with clearer cadence. Why rhythm and flow matter—including a brief, powerful recitation from Douglas MacArthur’s “Duty, Honor, Country.”Challenges in early Pathways navigation, and how one article unexpectedly helped rural clubs get their footing. His passion for speech delivery, especially vocal variety and cadence as core elements of listener engagement.Surprising moments of feedback, including responses from Toastmasters in remote or underserved areas. Why memorizing a speech frees you to deliver with authenticity and connection rather than anxiety. The episode also revisits one of Bill’s popular humor pieces, “Make Your Speeches Something to Laugh At”(December 2020), as he and Greg unpack the “alternate meaning” technique, pun-based humor, and how to recover when the wrong meaning lands unintentionally. As he transitions from column writing, Bill shares what’s ahead: new delivery-training programs, books in development, fresh articles, and continued contributions to Toastmasters International. As he says, Toastmasters HQ has already made it clear—“they’re not done with me yet.”To read his December 2025 article and enjoy his final Answer Man column, visit the Toastmaster magazine.Other articles mentioned: Memorize Your Speech to Avoid Interruptions, (Nov 2025) and Help! Our Club Needs Members: Discover where to find members in your community. (March 2024.)Greg's humorous speech: Much Ado About Gadgets. “You can see God from anywhere if your mind is set to love and obey Him.” Question: What is the chief End of man? Answer: Man's chief End is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever! Written in one night on a train trip, Kate and Sheila recap A. W. Tozer's powerfully written book, The Pursuit of God. This inspirational jewel was published in 1948 but timelessly impactful, challenging readers to look out instead of in. We cannot simply sit in a pew to please God; we must fervently pursue Him if we are to grow closer to Him. “Complacency is a deadly foe of all spiritual growth.” “Sin has twisted our vision inward and made it self-regarding.” Eli and his sons were sad examples of pursuing self instead of God. The self-sins are many: self-righteousness, self-pity, self-confidence, self-sufficiency, self-admiration, self-love and a host of others that can so entangle our lives causing us to stagnate. Are you ready to put down the spoon and dig deep to seek God wholeheartedly? “How tragic that we in this dark day have had our seeking done for us by our teachers.” As the parable told by Jesus about the 10 virgins illustrates, each one of us must prepare to be ready, we cannot rely on someone else to do the work. Let's make passionately pursuing our heavenly Father a vital part each day He gives us!
Pastor Juan Carlos Huertas loves short stories and this week he shares some thoughts from his reading of Stephen King's “The Answer Man.” We all get anxious about making decisions, about the uncertainties of life, and want to make sure that we take the right next steps. What if we could get some answers? Would it help us live a more fulfilling life?

Ken Weber is the President of Weber Asset Management and also a mentalist, magician, consultant and author. This week we chat with Ken about these latter job descriptions. Ken has performed aboard cruise ships and as a young man in the Catskills of New York. He was an early member of the Psychic Entertainers Association (P.E.A.) and frequent attendee at MINDvention and other mentalism conventions. He authored “Maximum Entertainment” that was updated and re-published as “Maximum Entertainment 2.0.” More than just a reprint of the original, there is much more material added to the new book. We have had Ken on this podcast from time to time as part of the content from a few magic convention reports in the past. But in this episode, we finally get to sit down and have a proper conversation about his book, “Maximum Entertainment 2.0” as well as some tips that he suggests when he is consulting with some of the top pros in the business. He has some good advice that will benefit you whether you are a close-up or stage magician or mentalist. Men have a natural desire to be the smartest guy in the room. Deep down, we love being the one who solves every problem and ends every debate. Even with our children, we often tell them what's right instead of letting them discover God's truth on their own. If your kids are going to reach their God-given potential, though, they'll need to struggle some and find their own answers to the biggest questions in their lives. That's healthy, but that also involves taking a step back. You'll need to embrace the role of pointing them in the right direction instead of being the guy with all the answers.
