Her husband’s death began a period of transition for Nora. She took over his hardware business and cared for their three children on her own. “Be strong,” friends often told her. But what does that mean? she’d think. That I must deliver without fail in my responsibilities? God gave great responsibilities to Othniel in a time of transition for the people of Israel. As discipline for the nation’s idolatry, God had given them “into the hands of Cushan-Rishathaim . . . to whom the Israelites were subject for eight years” (Judges 3:8). Under the cruel king of Mesopotamia, the Israelites “cried out to the Lord,” and “he raised up for them a deliverer” (v. 9)—Othniel, whose name means “God’s strength.” As the first judge of Israel, Othniel had no predecessor to help him. This military leader had to guide the Israelites back to living out their covenant relationship with God and defend them from their enemies. But because “the Spirit of the Lord came on him” (v. 10), he succeeded. With God’s strength sustaining Othniel’s leadership, “the land had peace for forty years, until [he] died” (v. 11). Doctor Dolittle, the fictional doctor who converses with animals, has delighted fans through books, movies, and plays. However, few people know that author Hugh Lofting first wrote the Dolittle tales to his children from the ghastly trenches of World War I. He later said that the war was too awful to recount in his letters—so he wrote and illustrated stories instead. These whimsical, joy-filled tales were Lofting’s way of pushing back against the war’s horror. It’s inspiring to see a person moving against the menacing, degrading forces that seem too powerful to thwart. We admire this resilient courage because we fear that injustice, violence, and greed will triumph. Sometimes we fear that the whole world will be “overcome by evil” (Romans 12:21). And these fears are well-founded if we’re left to ourselves. However, God has not left us to ourselves. He fills us with His divine strength, places us in the action, and calls us to “overcome evil with good” (v. 21). We each overcome evil with good in whatever ways God has put into our hearts. Some of us write beautiful stories. Some of us care for the poor. Some of us make our homes places of welcome. Some of us share God’s story through melody, poetry, or conversation. In a myriad of ways, we carry His goodness and peace into the world (v. 18), overcoming evil as we go.

Come As You Are Series - MosesExodus 4:10-13 “Then Moses said to the Lord, “Please, Lord, I have never been eloquent, neither recently nor in time past, nor since You have spoken to Your servant; for I am slow of speech and slow of tongue.” But the Lord said to him, “Who has made the human mouth? Or who makes anyone unable to speak or deaf, or able to see or blind? Is it not I, the Lord? Now then go, and I Myself will be with your mouth, and instruct you in what you are to say.” But he said, “Please, Lord, now send the message by whomever You will.”This chapter starts with Moses questioning God.  God had just told Moses he wanted him to go to Egypt and talk to God's people.  He said he wanted Moses to speak to the most powerful person at the time, the pharaoh of Egypt, and tell him he needed to let the Israelites go.  He needed to release his entire workforce, as the Israelites were slaves in Egypt.  Also, Moses has been on the run for 40 years after he killed a man.  Moses was concerned no one would believe him if he did as God asked Him to do.  In Exodus 4:1-9, God tells Moses exactly what to do if they don't believe that God spoke to him. God said he would turn Moses's staff into a snake when he threw it on the ground, and then, when he picked it back up again by the tail, it would become a staff again. This way, the Israelite people will know that God sent him. Furthermore, if that didn't work, the Lord told Moses two other signs he would do so that they would believe that the Lord sent him.In verses 10 & 11, it says, “But Moses said to the Lord, 'O my Lord, I have never been eloquent, neither in the past nor even now that you have spoken to your servant; but I am slow of speech and slow of tongue.”  Then the Lord said to him, “Who gives speech to mortals? Who makes them mute or deaf, seeing or blind? Is it not I, the Lord?” The Lord is telling Moses, I know you, I made you. I know what you can and can't do. However, I am the Lord, and I can do all things. If God can make the deaf hear or the blind see, then don't you think He could give you whatever you need to do whatever He is calling you to do?Just before this verse, God was telling Moses that He wanted Moses to go to Egypt and free the Jewish people. Moses, like many of us, had lots of reasons why he was not qualified to do the job God asked him to do. What if they didn't listen to him? What if they didn't believe God had sent him? God gave Moses all sorts of answers to these questions. Every excuse Moses gave him, God responded with an answer.It makes me think of my kids when I ask them to do something, and they have a million excuses for why they can't. It doesn't matter if you shoot down 1 million excuses; they will always have just one more. It is so frustrating, and I can imagine it would be even more frustrating for the Lord. I mean, He is God. He knows everything. If He says you can do something, you can do it.Moses started right in with the what-ifs. What if they don't believe me is the only one he mentioned, but I wonder if it was the only one?  I wonder if this one “what if” spiraled into a bunch of “what ifs?”  Has that ever happened to you before? You start wondering what if this happens, and what if that happens, and before you know it, you've imagined 50 different scenarios, and most of them are bad.  Did you ever notice your mind doesn't usually go through all the positive what-ifs?  When is the last time your brain asked What if I win the lottery?  What if everything works out perfectly?  What if I do get that job with the pay raise?  What if I do meet the man of my dreams?  If your brain has done the what-ifs with a positive spin, then you are lucky; that is not how it usually goes.God was going to use what Moses already had, the staff, to convince the people that Moses was telling the truth.  If God sends you to do something, he will give you all you need to do it.  We don't have to question Him. This aligns with one of my favorite sayings, which is that God doesn't call the equipped, He equips the called.  If God is calling you to do something, you can rest assured knowing He has already given you all you need to fulfill that calling.  When we ask “What if,” we are thinking about the future, we are going through all the scenarios of everything that could go wrong with our day.  What if it isn't really God calling me to do this thing? What if other people think I am crazy for doing this thing?  What if I am too old or too young to do this thing? What if I try it and I fail? Do you see how one thought can then spiral into a lot of thoughts, each one seemingly more and more serious?  I would like to say this type of thought pattern was unusual.  It isn't. If you tend to start to head down the what-if road often, you are not alone.  Many of us do this.  However, when we do this, we are worrying needlessly, and we are probably missing out on whatever is happening at the moment because we are too wrapped up in our thoughts.  We are too wrapped up in what might happen, and so we are missing out on what is actually happening. For instance, let's say you have a calling from the Lord.  Your mind may start down the what if road.  What if I can't so what He is asking me to do?  What if I try, yet I can't do it?  What if my family disagrees with what I am doing?  What if I let people down? What if I make people angry?  Do you see how our thoughts can spiral quickly?  Do you see how these thoughts are based on the future?  They are also based on things I don't have any real control over.  The Lord is the Lord God Almighty. He is not going to ask you to do something that you can not do. He created you. He knows everything about you. He knows your weaknesses, and He knows your strengths. If He is calling you to do something you feel you aren't very good at, then that means He is going to help you get better at it. I remember about 8 - 10 years ago, I asked the Lord, “Why is it that everyone in my family can write but me?” My dad and two of my brothers have published books. I am one of the five youngest in my family, and the other four are very gifted writers, especially with poems. So, I was curious why I wasn't a good writer. The Lord reminded me that although I can't seem to write poems, I always did very well writing papers in school.I had no idea that 5 years later the Lord was going to call me to write a different devotional 5 days a week for several years and also to write two books. When asked to write the blogs first, then these podcast episodes, and finally the books, I definitely talked to the Lord about how I wasn't the best writer. However, I also told the Lord that I would show up to write if He would show up and tell me what to write, and so it all began. Now I have over 1,000 episodes that I have written, numerous blog posts, and two books. If I can obey the Lord's call, so can you.He isn't asking you to know how to do it. He isn't asking you to do it perfectly. He isn't asking you to be good at it. He isn't asking you to have all the provisions to make it happen. All God is asking you for is your yes. He will do the rest. All you need to do is take the next right step and trust that if you need something, God will provide it.God had a pretty amazing call for Moses' life, and once Moses accepted it and stopped complaining and trying to get out of it, they did some pretty awesome things together. Moses got to experience miracles he never would have gotten to experience if the Lord had bought his excuses and let him off the hook. Early in the basketball season, the coach at our neighborhood middle school seemed to work hardest convincing his players to risk shooting the ball. “Shoot!” he pleaded from the sidelines. His players eagerly passed the ball. Dribbling was a favorite too. The season was half over before most of them would shed their doubts and try to shoot the ball to score. But “going for it” made all the difference. By obeying their coach, letting go of doubt, and trying—even if they often missed the target—they learned to win. Jesus teaches us to let go of doubt to obey His call to make disciples. He explains, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you” (Matthew 28:18-20). In practical terms, this can mean stepping out of our comfort to share our story of what God has done for us. Or getting involved in the lives of our hurting neighbors, showing them Jesus’ love. Such approaches work, but only if we let go and try them. Above all, we go in Jesus’ authority to attempt what may look hard—making disciples. But we need not fear. Jesus promised: “Surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age” (v. 20).

Come As You Are Series: Rahab The ProstituteHebrews 11:31 “By faith the prostitute Rahab did not perish along with those who were disobedient, after she had welcomed the spies in peace.”This series is to remind us that God wants us to come as we are. He doesn't expect us to wait until we have cleaned ourselves up or changed our habits before we go to Him. He wants us to come to Him as we are, and then He can help bring us to where He wants us to be. I love the quote, “God meets us where we are and He loves us too much to let us stay there.” We don't need to change before we go to God; we need God to help us change.Today, we are talking about Rehab the prostitute. You might wonder why we are talking about a prostitute. If you don't know Rahab's story, let me summarize it for you. God told the Israelites that He would give them Jericho as their promised land. Joshua sent two spies to check out that land. The Bible says, “So they went and entered the house of a prostitute whose name was Rahab, and rested there.” (Joshua 2:1) Why would these holy men go to rest at the prostitute's house? Could it be because she was an outcast, and so there wouldn't be a bunch of people at her house? Is it because she is used to hiding men in her house? We don't know exactly, as it doesn't say why they went there, just that they did go there.I heard Steven Furtick of Elevation church talking about this, and he said something that I thought was really good. He said sometimes God will use what you think is a weakness as part of His plan. Joshua's men chose to stay with Rehab, maybe for the very reason she would have thought God couldn't use her. I know if I were a prostitute, I would have counted myself out by being used by God. I would have thought that my sins were too great for God to have used me in any way. However, God used Rehab to hide these two men who went to check out the land for Joshua.These men stayed with Rahab, and then the king found out there were spies in his land, and he told Rahab to turn them over. Luckily, she had already hidden them, again, something her job would have taught her to do, and so she said that they had stopped by, but they left before the gates closed for the night. Rehab knew that God had sent these two guys and that He had planned to give Jericho to His people. She helped them so that they would spare her life when they came in to take the land. These men agreed to spare her and her family as long as they were inside her house with her. They gave her a scarlet cord to put in her window so they could tell all the troops to stay out of her home.Rahab used her talents to hide these men and, therefore, gained safety for her whole family. I bet her parents never saw that coming. I bet they never expected the skills she had learned because of her profession would wind up saving their lives someday. God's ways are a mystery to us. We don't understand His plan, and yet, with His plan, He shows us time and again that He is not choosing the perfect people to carry it out. He does not choose who we would have chosen.We talked about Tamar and how she dressed like a harlot to seduce her father-in-law to sleep with her so that she could have a baby. We discussed how, out of all the lineages of Jesus listed in the Gospels, Tamar, even after tricking and sleeping with her father-in-law, is only one of five women mentioned in the lineage of Jesus. Now we have Rehab, who is a prostitute, and she is another one of the five women listed in the lineage of Jesus. It says in Matthew 1:5, “Salmon fathered Boaz by Rahab, Boaz fathered Obed by Ruth, and Obed fathered Jesse.”In Jewish culture, when listing someone's lineage, it is customary to include the father's name. However, in the case of Jesus, it is mostly just the father's listed. However, there are five of the mothers listed. Just five in all those years. Matthew 1:17 says, “ So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; from David to the deportation to Babylon, fourteen generations; and from the deportation to Babylon to the [o]Messiah, fourteen generations.” There are 42 generations from Abraham to the Messiah listed in the Gospel of Matthew, and of those 42 generations, He only mentions 5 of the mothers. Those five women must have been pretty special for God to use them to help bring forth the Messiah.Did they feel special? Did they feel abandoned? With Tamar, we know she lost her husband and was promised that his brother would be given to her when he was of age, but he wasn't. Her father-in-law betrayed her, and so she took what she felt was hers. I doubt she felt special taking it, though. I suspect she didn't feel holy enough for the Lord to use her in an incredible way like He did. With Rehab, we don't know her story. We don't understand why she became a prostitute. We don't know any back story that would provide us insight into her career choice. However, I am willing to believe she didn't feel special. I am sure she was an outcast because of her profession. The women in town probably hated her, as some of their husbands probably went to see her.Why did God choose these women to help bring about His plan to save us with Jesus? Why are these women listed in the lineage when others are not? I believe it is because God wants to show us that you don't have to be perfect to be used by God. You don't have to be doing all the right things. You don't have to get it right all the time. Life is hard, and God knows that. He understands if we get lost and follow the wrong path in life. He is not condemning us or holding it against us. He is just patiently waiting for us to come back to Him.We mustn't count ourselves out. God can use us, no matter what we have done in the past. God will love us, no matter what we have done in the past or what we are doing now. He still loves us more than anything. Rehab was a prostitute, and yet her name made it into the lineage of Jesus. She is also mentioned two other times in the New Testament. One of those is the verse above. “By faith the prostitute Rahab did not perish along with those who were disobedient, after she had welcomed the spies in peace.” Rahab was not one of the chosen people of the time. She didn't see God part the Red Sea so she could walk through. She didn't see the manna sent from God every day to feed his people.She didn't see any of these miracles, but she did hear about them. She heard about them, and she believed them so much that she was willing to risk her life to hide the men of God so that they might spare her and her family's lives when they came back to conquer the land. Her faith in a God she didn't know was so great that she was willing to risk it all. There are many lessons we can learn from Rahab. One is that we don't need to be afraid to take risks when God is involved. Second is that God can use anyone for His plan. Third is that God may want to use that very thing that you feel is your greatest weakness, that very thing that fills you with so much shame. God can turn that shame into something you can be proud of if you let Him. Don't shut God out because you don't feel worthy. Ask Him to come into the messiness and allow Him to love you right where you are!Dear Heavenly Father, I ask you to bless all those listening to this episode. Lord, we love you, and we ask you to help us know that you love us, too. Help us to believe that just as you did for Rahab, you can redeem us too. You can use us even though we are not perfect and we have made a lot of mistakes. Please help us to believe that we are exactly the type of person you could us to help bring your kingdom to earth. Sitting in the hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit, I visited with a mother as her newborn baby cuddled up against her chest. In this technologically advanced medical facility, the doctors had recommended a very low-tech “prescription” to improve and strengthen the child’s health—the new mom was to spend extended periods of time simply holding her daughter. There’s almost nothing like the overwhelming love and tender compassion of a parent to provide healing comfort for a child. We see this powerful imagery in the prophet Isaiah’s description of God with His people. Even after prophesying impending exile for the nation of Israel because they’d rejected God (Isaiah 39:5-7), Isaiah emphasized to the people that God still loved them and would always provide for them. God’s tender compassion and secure care is evident in the beautiful metaphor where He is described as a shepherd who, much like a loving father, gathers His sheep “in his arms and carries them close to his heart” (40:11). God’s presence grants us peace and protection and reminds us that He carries us close to His heart, like a newborn baby with its mother. As He “gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak” (v. 29), the Spirit’s healing comfort allows us to meet the challenges of each day.

Her fans knew her as Nightbirde. Singer-songwriter Jane Kristen Marczewski won a following in 2021 on a popular TV talent show. In 2017, she’d been diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer. In 2018, she went into remission. She started touring, but months later the cancer returned, giving her little chance of survival. Amazingly, she recovered and was declared cancer-free. But on February 19, 2022, Nightbirde died. During her difficult journey, she blogged, “I remind myself that I’m praying to the God who let the Israelites stay lost for decades. They begged to arrive . . . but instead He let them wander, answering prayers they didn’t pray. . . . Every morning, He sent them mercy-bread from heaven . . . . I look for the mercy-bread . . . The Israelites called it manna, which means ‘what is it?’ That’s the same question I’m asking . . . . There’s mercy here somewhere—but what is it?” The exodus story reveals much about God’s mercy. First, His mercy was promised to the Israelites. “You will be filled with bread” (Exodus 16:12). And second, His mercy may surprise us. “They did not know what it was” (v. 15). Mercy often doesn’t look like what we think. But it’s mercy nonetheless. For the Israelites, it looked like morning manna. For Nightbirde, she wrote of the gift of a blanket from a friend, and her mother’s hands.

such things. Philippians 4:8 Lap after lap, Katie Ledecky was in a familiar spot during the 1500-meter freestyle race at the 2024 Paris Olympics. For some fifteen minutes, she was far ahead of the rest of the swimmers and alone with her thoughts. What was Ledecky thinking about during the long race? In an interview conducted immediately following her gold-medal-winning performance in which she set a new Olympic record, Ledecky said she was thinking about her training partners and saying their names in her head. Distance swimmers aren’t the only ones who need to focus their minds on the right things. We as believers in Jesus also need to guard our thoughts throughout our faith journey. The apostle Paul encouraged the Philippian church to “rejoice in the Lord,” not be “anxious about anything, but pray about everything (Philippians 4:4, 6). The result? “The peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (v. 7). Jesus, the Prince of Peace, helps put our worries and troubles in perspective. Paul also encouraged believers: “Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things” (v. 8). As we go about our day, let’s be aware of our thoughts. When we see God’s hand in our life, we can count our blessings and worship Him.

Come As You Are Series - The Samaritan Woman at the WellJohn 4:39-42 “Many Samaritans from that city believed in him because of the woman's testimony, “He told me all that I ever did.” So when the Samaritans came to him, they asked him to stay with them; and he stayed there two days.  And many more believed because of his word.  They said to the woman, “It is no longer because of your words that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is indeed the Savior of the world.”I like this verse because it shows how important it is that we talk about our faith and how much God is doing for us.  The opening sentence in this verse says, “Many Samaritans from that city believed in him because of the woman's testimony.”  What if she didn't tell anyone what had happened?  What if she was too afraid of what others might think to talk about it?  She was already an outcast because of her lifestyle.  She had five different husbands over the years, and when she met Jesus, the man she was currently living with was not her husband.  The reason she was getting water at the hottest time of day was that she was too ashamed to get water in the morning when the rest of the women got their water.  She did not want to be the center of attention.  She didn't want everyone looking at her, and yet she ran to town to tell everyone about Jesus.  I wonder if all those people would have been saved if she had been too afraid to tell her story.  If she was too afraid to share her excitement over Jesus and what He did for her.  The reason I ask is that I sometimes feel afraid to share.  Sometimes I get a prompting from the Holy Spirit to say something to someone, and all this fear and doubt go through my mind.  I wonder what that person will think of me if I say it.  I wonder if I will sound crazy or stupid.  I wonder if they will even listen or if they will just walk away.  I wonder if they will be mean.  It sounds like this woman did not think about it at all.  She had a conversation with Jesus and then ran right to town to tell everyone about it.  I want her courage, her boldness, her humility.  Or maybe her impulsiveness, if she ran off without even thinking about it.  Maybe I need more of that when it comes to Jesus.  Maybe I just need to act first and think later when it comes to following the promptings of the Holy Spirit.  Have you ever wondered if something you say or do could have this effect on people?  It can.  It might have already.  A lot of times, it is for us to plant the seeds but not to see the harvest.  We have no idea how our words and actions can affect the course of someone's life.  Sometimes we say something, and the person we say it to doesn't really think much of it, but then down the road, they see the significance of it. Think back to all the people who have been influential in your life.  Did you know at the time they were going to be so influential?  Did you know that the advice they gave you was going to shape the kind of person you would become?  Are those people still alive?  Could you tell them now how influential they were?  They may not know.We don't usually see the good in us as much as others do.  It is an interesting experiment to ask those who know you well to tell you what they see in you, what they feel your strengths are, and what your weaknesses are.  I was reading a book titled “The Miracle Morning” and the author Hal Elrod suggested sending an email to those closest to you, this can include family, friends, and coworkers.  He suggests you email them and ask them to tell you the top 2-3 areas of weakness you may have, and then also some areas of strength.  He said it is a great way to see if you are living life intentionally and if you are giving off the vibe you want to give off.  At the end of the book, he gave a sample email to send out.  I think if you asked others how they see you, you would be surprised.  They will see things in you to admire and look up to, and you may not see them.The verse ends by saying that although the people in the town started to believe in Jesus because of her words, now they believe because they heard Jesus for themselves.  I love this part too because I feel it takes the pressure off of me.  I just have to tell my story, I just have to talk about what Jesus has done for me, and hopefully that will be enough to lead people to find Jesus.  It is not my responsibility to make them Christian, to save their soul, to teach them everything they need to know about Jesus.  Jesus will do that.  It is just my job to tell them about my encounter.  If I tell people how God is working in my life, that will be enough to get them to seek God so they can find out more.  I truly believe our stories are powerful enough to bring others to Christ, and this verse is a great witness to that.  Sometimes we think our story is not big enough, interesting enough, or important enough to tell others.  We feel we have lived a boring, normal life, and so others won't want to hear about it.  This is a lie from the enemy.  He knows how important our stories are, and he knows others need to hear them.  There isn't a single person who gets through this life without hardships, without struggles.  Maybe you feel your struggles are small compared to others, and yet someone else might be having the same struggle you had, and they feel like it is so overwhelming.  God might be doing big, amazing things in your life, and that is awesome. Tell people about it.  God might be doing small, almost unnoticeable things in your life, and that is amazing too; tell people about it.  There are some people, a lot of people, who don't know God.  They don't know that the reason everything went so well and things fell into place so nicely is because of God.  However, if you tell them about the little ways you see God showing up in your life, they will start to see Him in their life as well.  I know it is hard to speak up sometimes.  I know this world doesn't seem to be super friendly to people who want to talk about Jesus.  I know there are a million reasons we can come up with for why we shouldn't share our story.  I know the enemy is whispering in your ear that you don't have anything to share.  He is saying your life is too boring, and no one wants to hear about your life.  I know all of that, and yet if you read this verse, hopefully you can see the importance of sharing your story anyway.  What if your story was the story someone needs to hear today to find Jesus, or to come back to Jesus?  Can we join together and be brave enough to share our story so that we can bring others to know Jesus?  Can we do that for God?  If you feel like you are not brave enough, I know I am not some days, then ask God for help.  He gives us what we ask for, especially if we are asking for things that will help us build up the kingdom of God.  How is God working in your life, and who can you talk to about it today?Another thing I thought of when I was thinking about this story is the fact that Jesus chose this particular woman to reveal his identity to.  She was a Samaritan, and Jews were not supposed to associate with Samaritans. She was a woman, and men weren't supposed to talk with women they didn't know. Yet God chose this Samaritan woman to be the first person to whom He revealed his true identity. God chose her, and He is choosing you, too!God has a purpose for each one of us.  I was going to say, “If God wants to use you, He will.”  However, I don't believe it is a matter of “if”.  God definitely wants to use you; He wants to use all of us to help Him build up His Kingdom.  Whatever you feel God putting on your heart, know that He chose you for a reason.  Maybe that thing you feel is a weakness is the exact reason God chose you.  Maybe he is going to use that weakness to help you talk to others with that same weakness?  Maybe your addiction to alcohol makes you perfectly suited to bring his good news to others with an addiction to alcohol.  God will use all our mistakes, all of our pain, all of our sins, for good if we let Him.  Don't listen to that inner voice that tells you God wouldn't use you.  That is the voice of the enemy trying to keep you down because he knows God has powerful plans for you, and the enemy is worried about what will happen if you step into those plans.  God knows you are not perfect, and that is exactly why He wants to use you.  Let Him.  Say Yes.  Surrender to God, and He will use you.  You are exactly who He wants.  Dear Heavenly Father, I ask you to bless all those listening to this episode today.  Please help us see how you are working in our lives.  Please open our eyes to all you do for us and help give us the boldness to share it.  Dad, we are asking you to help us spread our story to all those we meet so they can start to see you working in their lives.  We ask that you help us not to believe the enemy's lies that our story is boring or that we don't have anything to say.  We love you, Lord, you are working in our lives, and we want to share that with others.  We just need your help to do that.  Thank you, Lord!  We ask all of this in accordance with your will and in Jesus' holy name, Amen!Thank you so much for joining me on this journey to walk boldly with Jesus. Think back to all the people who have been influential in your life.  Did you know at the time they were going to be so influential?  Did you know that the advice they gave you was going to shape the kind of person you would become?  Are those people still alive?  Could you tell them now how influential they were?  They may not know.We don't usually see the good in us as much as others do.  It is an interesting experiment to ask those who know you well to tell you what they see in you, what they feel your strengths are, and what your weaknesses are.  I was reading a book titled “The Miracle Morning” and the author Hal Elrod suggested sending an email to those closest to you, this can include family, friends, and coworkers.  He suggests you email them and ask them to tell you the top 2-3 areas of weakness you may have, and then also some areas of strength.  He said it is a great way to see if you are living life intentionally and if you are giving off the vibe you want to give off.  At the end of the book, he gave a sample email to send out.  I think if you asked others how they see you, you would be surprised.  They will see things in you to admire and look up to, and you may not see them.The verse ends by saying that although the people in the town started to believe in Jesus because of her words, now they believe because they heard Jesus for themselves.  I love this part too because I feel it takes the pressure off of me.  I just have to tell my story, I just have to talk about what Jesus has done for me, and hopefully that will be enough to lead people to find Jesus.  It is not my responsibility to make them Christian, to save their soul, to teach them everything they need to know about Jesus.  Jesus will do that.  It is just my job to tell them about my encounter.  If I tell people how God is working in my life, that will be enough to get them to seek God so they can find out more.  I truly believe our stories are powerful enough to bring others to Christ, and this verse is a great witness to that.  Sometimes we think our story is not big enough, interesting enough, or important enough to tell others.  We feel we have lived a boring, normal life, and so others won't want to hear about it.  This is a lie from the enemy.  He knows how important our stories are, and he knows others need to hear them.  There isn't a single person who gets through this life without hardships, without struggles.  Maybe you feel your struggles are small compared to others, and yet someone else might be having the same struggle you had, and they feel like it is so overwhelming.  God might be doing big, amazing things in your life, and that is awesome. Tell people about it.  God might be doing small, almost unnoticeable things in your life, and that is amazing too; tell people about it.  There are some people, a lot of people, who don't know God.  They don't know that the reason everything went so well and things fell into place so nicely is because of God.  However, if you tell them about the little ways you see God showing up in your life, they will start to see Him in their life as well.  I know it is hard to speak up sometimes.  I know this world doesn't seem to be super friendly to people who want to talk about Jesus.  I know there are a million reasons we can come up with for why we shouldn't share our story.  I know the enemy is whispering in your ear that you don't have anything to share.  He is saying your life is too boring, and no one wants to hear about your life.  I know all of that, and yet if you read this verse, hopefully you can see the importance of sharing your story anyway.  What if your story was the story someone needs to hear today to find Jesus, or to come back to Jesus?  Can we join together and be brave enough to share our story so that we can bring others to know Jesus?  Can we do that for God?  If you feel like you are not brave enough, I know I am not some days, then ask God for help.  He gives us what we ask for, especially if we are asking for things that will help us build up the kingdom of God.  How is God working in your life, and who can you talk to about it today?Another thing I thought of when I was thinking about this story is the fact that Jesus chose this particular woman to reveal his identity to.  She was a Samaritan, and Jews were not supposed to associate with Samaritans. She was a woman, and men weren't supposed to talk with women they didn't know. Yet God chose this Samaritan woman to be the first person to whom He revealed his true identity. God chose her, and He is choosing you, too!God has a purpose for each one of us.  I was going to say, “If God wants to use you, He will.”  However, I don't believe it is a matter of “if”.  God definitely wants to use you; He wants to use all of us to help Him build up His Kingdom.  Whatever you feel God putting on your heart, know that He chose you for a reason.  Maybe that thing you feel is a weakness is the exact reason God chose you.  Maybe he is going to use that weakness to help you talk to others with that same weakness?  Maybe your addiction to alcohol makes you perfectly suited to bring his good news to others with an addiction to alcohol.  God will use all our mistakes, all of our pain, all of our sins, for good if we let Him.  Don't listen to that inner voice that tells you God wouldn't use you.  That is the voice of the enemy trying to keep you down because he knows God has powerful plans for you, and the enemy is worried about what will happen if you step into those plans.  God knows you are not perfect, and that is exactly why He wants to use you.  Let Him.  Say Yes.  Surrender to God, and He will use you.  You are exactly who He wants.  Dear Heavenly Father, I ask you to bless all those listening to this episode today.  Please help us see how you are working in our lives.  Please open our eyes to all you do for us and help give us the boldness to share it.  Dad, we are asking you to help us spread our story to all those we meet so they can start to see you working in their lives.  We ask that you help us not to believe the enemy's lies that our story is boring or that we don't have anything to say.  We love you, Lord, you are working in our lives, and we want to share that with others.  We just need your help to do that.  Thank you, Lord!  We ask all of this in accordance with your will and in Jesus' holy name, Amen!Thank you so much for joining me on this journey to walk boldly with Jesus. I viewed the opening displays of the 9/11 Memorial & Museum in New York City with curiosity but kept my emotions in check. That changed when we entered the inner exhibit, which the curators have wisely closed off from children and those wanting to shield themselves from the more heartrending images. As I encountered story after story of heartbreak and loss, waves of lament rose within me. When we witness or remember such destruction and pain, we can join the cries of those who have voiced their distress to God. This includes the words of anguish found in Lamentations, which many scholars believe the prophet Jeremiah wrote after the destruction of Jerusalem. In the tightly formed structure of this poem, he releases his sorrow and grief over the pain of God’s people: “See, Lord, how distressed I am! I am in torment within, and in my heart I am disturbed” (Lamentations 1:20). And yet he looks to God as the ultimate judge, knowing that only He can deal with the sins and destruction: “Let all their wickedness come before you” (v. 22). This kind of honest crying out to God can help us to grapple with painful atrocities such as what happened on September 11, 2001, or other current-day evil deeds. We look to God for help, hope, comfort, and justice.

Anita Bailey’s heart was warmed when she got this social media message about her son Jalen: “I was a greeter today at [church] and a young man with a child in his arms came up to me and put his arms around me. . . . I stared for a second, then I recognized him and said, ‘Jalen’! We embraced and chatted briefly. What a fine young man!” The greeter had known Jalen in his rebellious days when Anita and her husband, Ed, felt powerless to save their son from the consequences of his unwise choices, which resulted in twelve years in prison for him. Though the Baileys felt powerless, they were not prayerless. And neither was King Jehoshaphat in 2 Chronicles 20. When harassed by a menacing coalition of enemy forces, he called a prayer meeting (vv. 1-4). “Our God, will you not judge them?” he prayed. “For we have no power to face this vast army that is attacking us. We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on you” (v. 12). Have you ever felt powerless or clueless in the face of circumstances that were out of your control? Why not call a prayer meeting—either alone or with others? That’s what Jesus did in the face of His coming crucifixion (Luke 22:39-44). Prayer space is the sacred place where the petitions of powerless people are offered to our almighty God in the name of Jesus.

Before he was martyred for his steadfast faith in Jesus, an African minister whose name has not been preserved penned “A Martyr’s Prayer.” This profound message from another era has become known as “The Fellowship of the Unashamed.” This pastor’s words present a challenge to all believers in Jesus—a challenge that echoes the words of the apostle Paul, who wrote in his letter to his young friend Timothy: “Do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord” (2 Timothy 1:8) because the Holy Spirit gives us “power, love and self-discipline” (v. 7). Here, in part, is what that faithful African pastor wrote: “I am part of the fellowship of the unashamed. The decision has been made. I am a disciple of [Jesus] and I won’t back up, let up, slow down, back away, or be still. My past is redeemed. My present makes sense. My future is secure. . . . I live by faith, lean on His presence, walk by patience, lift by prayer, and labor by the Holy Spirit’s power.” Both Timothy and that pastor faced difficulties we may never experience, but their words challenge us to stand strong when our faith is tested. We can remain unashamed because God “is able to guard what [we] have entrusted to him” (v. 12)—our lives and our future.
