Where fairytales come true: a story on how to live your best life I have secretly been planning this podcast episode — all about how to live your best life — in my mind for more than two years. Bringing this story to you, friend, is…well, a dream come true. As you'll soon hear, it all started once upon a time, many, many years ago. There I was, presenting at a conference, when Stephanie Osmundson and Loreal Hemenway made themselves known to me. And then…well, you'll just have to listen to this episode to get the rest of the story because their tale is the stuff that living your dreams is made of. (Spoiler alert: Stephanie and Loreal are a case study on what it means to “live your dream” and they'll show you how!) How to live your best life now Stephanie and Loreal are not only best friends (and have been for many years), they are also business partners and the owners of Happily Ever Elementary. Most of all, they are — literally — living their best life now! And on today's podcast episode, they will not only share what it means to live your best life, they will also offer strategies and tools for you to do the same. As Stephanie and Loreal attest, you can become anything that you want to become, friend! The trick, of course, is to get really clear on what you want first. And if you can figure that out, anything (and I mean ANYTHING) is possible. As a teaser, their happily ever after includes being both stay-at-home moms AND teachers in the classroom. Are you ready to begin living your dream? Listen to this episode for all of the inspiration… ABOUT STEPAHNIE AND LOREAL AND HAPPILY EVER ELEMENTARY Stephanie and Loreal are two young teachers who are on a mission to make classroom dreams come true! This journey revolves around bringing meaningful engagement to instruction and creating beautiful learning spaces that remind children of Disneyland. They are also both mamas to two boys, with Loreal's first precious daughter on the way. In an effort to spend more time with their growing families, the two will be splitting a teaching contract for the first time at their neighborhood elementary school. It is a dream come true for these two teachers and now they can focus on finding the longed-for work life balance. In this episode, you will learn: How living your dream begins with turning your back on fear That to succeed you must START Why building trust first is instrumental to live your best life now That when failure befalls, being honest, open, and genuine may allow you to connect more fully with your audience That living your dream begins by ASKING for what you want LINKS MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE ABOUT HOW TO LIVE YOUR BEST LIFE:  The CEO Teacher® The Classroom to

Black and white thinking is a barrier to moderation - Stephanie Chivers

In this week's podcast, habit and addiction coach and long-time friend of Club Soda, Stephanie Chivers, addresses a long-burning issue within our community; why some people need to be abstinent and why some people are more suited to moderation.  This issue often bubbles up within our Club Soda Facebook group, causing some division.  But, as Stephanie explains in her conversation with Club Soda's Dru below, black and white thinking - one approach is good and the other is bad - is exactly what hinders success for both abstinent and moderate drinkers.  Who is Stephanie Chivers?Stephanie is is a qualified Coach and Master Practitioner of NLP. Stephanie specialises in behaviour change and addiction as a 1-1 practitioner and in group work and has facilitated change for many people in many different addictive scenarios. She addressed her own addictive behaviours in her 30s and, as a result of her personal and professional insight, now gets a buzz from guiding others to lead healthy and fulfilling lives beyond the restrictive behaviour and black and white thinking of addiction. What is black and white thinking and what does it have to do with moderation? As Stephanie discusses in the podcast, black and white thinking is another way of describing an all-or-nothing mindset towards substance abuse. In this conversation, Stephanie and Dru consider the effect of a restrictive mindset on moderation - can you really be moderate if you believe that abstinence is the only 'good' way to behave? Does the trendy idea that alcohol free is the only way forward hinder people who only need to cut down? And how do we know that what works for us is the 'best way'? 'When you give advice or share, use your language carefully. I can share with you what worked for me take from that what you will.'The other point is that we should not be too all-or-nothing with ourselves. Just because a period of moderation may not have worked out for us in the short term doesn't mean that it never will. Our lives are full of circumstances that mean that our plans need to change or become more flexible, and so we should also allow ourselves flexibility to see how we feel, amend our strategies so that we can reach our goal, and not allow black and white thinking to derail our intentions. Give it some time. See how you feel. Make another decision.Other resources from Club SodaIf you want to hear more about moderate drinking, check out our other blogs about moderation. In the end, the best way to know if moderation will work for you is to try it.  Club Soda's courses about mindful drinking teach you the skills you need to moderate your drinking - sign up today!Support the show (https://joinclubsoda.com/product/tip-jar-support-club-soda/)

Stephanie Grant has an infectious positivity. You can’t help but enjoy watching her cook amazing meals on her Instagram stories; or celebrating Black women in beer in her newsletter, The Share; or scrolling through her vibrant photographs. Her projects and pursuits all seem to radiate joy. But Stephanie’s not afraid of getting real—far from it. In her latest story for Good Beer Hunting titled “Beyond the Beer — Colorism, Black Pride, and the Black Is Beautiful Initiative”, which was published on January 27, 2021, she weaves together her personal experiences as a Black woman with the history and evolution of the Black is Beautiful movement. The result is a deeply affecting, personal, and informative story that readers of any background can appreciate. As Stephanie points out in her piece, however, no white person will ever be able to fully understand the gravity of the phrase “Black is Beautiful,” and what it represents. So in this conversation, Stephanie tells us in her own words what that phrase means to her as a Black woman. She wants people to understand just how deeply racism is embedded in American culture, how early messages of racist inequality start for children, and how the concept of colorism continues to divide communities from within as a holdover from slavery. Despite the heavy nature of the conversation, she still relishes the strength she can draw upon from other Black women, and how she’s been able to find joy, even during a tumultuous year and while writing this raw account of her own journey to self-love. During this conversation, we talk about the evolution and importance of language, how accountability is everyone’s responsibility, and why Black is Beautiful is so much more than just beer. Stephanie is optimistic, yet realistic. But above all, she’s ready to keep doing the work.

So often we hear that we are supposed to have goals and dreams. I can’t tell you how many times I sit down with people and they have no idea what their goals and dreams are -- or how to define them. Is it because we live in a world that is constantly spinning on what those definitions should be? The blanket advice - fast track - magic formula - latest trending topic or hashtag. We struggle with defining these because sometimes we just need to slow down, sit, be still, and listen. It has been something in all honesty that I myself at times have struggled to do. Thankfully, I surround myself with people like our guest today Stephanie Walton who reminds us all to dig deep for our passion and then we can define better those goals and dream - first though we have to understand what brings us joy. True joy not superficial. Learning about our conditioned mindset changed Stephanie’s life. She shares with us the three ways that you can have a conditioned mindset and how that may misguide you into what your passion. Not enough.Something is broken.I have to do something. Our stories are real. Where we come from is real and if we think we leave it behind naturally without working through it, well we are sadly mistaken. It takes hard work and recognition to process, in a healthy manner, the trauma that we have all experienced. Are you sweeping the past under the living room rug, pushing the sofa on top of it, and then throwing those pretty decorative pillows to cover up the pain, hurt, abandonment, and other feelings we might carry deep?As you go into a new year, rather than setting goals, that you might abandon, I encourage you to give this episode a listen and rather direct that energy to uncovering your passion. If you are living out your passion...how are you holding space for other people in your life to do the same? 9/17/20-- This week brought news that Ralph Gants, the Chief Justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court died suddenly at the age of 65. Gants was an advocate for racial justice, whose call for Harvard to explore racial inequities in the Massachusetts criminal justice system resulted in the publication of a report just last week. As Stephanie and Jenn note, Governor Baker will appoint two justices to the bench this year, as Justice Barbara Lenk plans to retire in December. Once the appointments have been made, Baker will have been responsible for putting up every justice on the Supreme Court bench. The Boston Globe reports that the only other governor to have appointed an entire slate of justices was John Hancock, the first and third governor of Massachusetts. In municipal news, Michelle Wu has officially announced her run for Boston Mayor, and Steve is armed with polling numbers illustrating Wu's favorability stacked against sitting Mayor Marty Walsh. Wu's popularity is lower than Walsh's, but Steve predicts younger voters could be extremely influential in this election, and their role could take shape in a similar fashion that unfolded in Ayanna Pressley's 2018 bid for Congress against incumbent Mike Capuano. Steve explains, younger people learned about Ayanna Pressley, became likely voters, and ultimately became her supporters. Meanwhile on Beacon Hill, the legislative session continues beyond its traditional July 31st end date after legislators moved to extend it through the end of 2020. Even with extra time dedicated passing major legislation on health care, transportation, housing and more, lawmakers have yet to make notable progress just yet. BFF of the pod and State House News Service reporter Katie Lannan stops by the show and explains that even though major developments haven't been made yet, because the legislative session continues, "the hope is still alive" on several of these big-name bills. Over in Western Massachusetts, Springfield City Councilors are making moves to the State House. Councilors Orlando Ramos and Adam Gomez are headed to the State House of Representatives and Senate, respectively, after winning their Democratic primary elections. Matt Szafranski, editor-in-chief of the Western Massachusetts Politics and Insight blog, says Springfield City Council is "now a viable political launchpad." Barbara DiPietro is the Senior Director of Policy at the National Health Care for the Homeless Council. She joins us this week to talk about what homelessness looks like in the United States, the wildly disporportionate incidence of COVID-19 in people currently experiencing homelessness, and how the dual crises of rising unemployment and insurance loss are making people more at-risk for becoming homeless. She explains why Medicare for All and the fight to make housing a right are interrelated struggles. Show Notes In the United States, both our healthcare and our housing systems have failed to protect us during COVID-19, and the two systems can interact in dangerous ways. To talk specifically about this intersection, we welcome Barbara DiPietro to the program, from the National Healthcare for the Homeless Council. Stephanie starts by asking what homelessness really looks like, and to address any myths people might have. Barbara says that most Americans when they picture homelessness will conjure to mind a street-homeless man who is a chronic alcoholic, but that description represents only about 10% of the homeless population. In fact, the homeless population is primarily low-income, working families and adults, and 1/3rd to 1/2 of shelter stays are children. Even families that work full-time, earning above minimum wage, often do not earn enough to afford rent in addition to meeting their food needs and other basic expenses. On any given night in America, there are about 1/2 a million people who we can count as homeless (many more are not counted). Over the course of a year, at least 1.5 million people use the shelter system, and possibly 2 million more are experiencing housing instability or doubling up. Barbara mentions that health issues and healthcare costs are actually one of the leading causes of homelessness in America. Medical debt and hospital bills can quickly overwhelm income, and leave people without cash to pay rent. However, other important issues can also lead to homelessness: domestic violence, fires, losing your job, etc, can all lead to losing your housing. Right now during COVID-19 we have millions of people losing their jobs, and unemployment benefits running out, along with a very vague national eviction order. What about the common notion that Medicaid is likely to cover everyone who becomes homeless, or that you can seek care in an emergency room? As Barbara mentions, your ability to access Medicaid depends entirely on the state you're in, as 15 states still have not expanded Medicaid to cover low-income people without meeting other requirements. Even in states that have expanded Medicaid, many people are churned in and out of the program. While it's technically true you can receive life-saving care at an emergency room, it doesn't mean you won't be billed for that care, or that you'll be treated with dignity. That care also won't be coordinated, and the emergency room is not the right place for providing primary and behavioral health in the community. Barbara would like to see more hospitals advocating for Medicare for All, since it would move these patients out of the ER and into appropriate primary care settings, which could really help with ER volume and capacity for all who need it. What would a public option do for healthcare access for homeless populations? Barbara says: well, it's better than nothing. We have to be honest though: the public option is primarily about incrementally increasing health insurance coverage. As Stephanie mentions, if an ACA marketplace plan (bronze, silver, or gold) is unaffordable to you, a public option plan will likely be as well. Why is housing so important for the fight for Medicare for All? Barbara reminds us that a Medicare for All system creates an incentive to do better preventive work in the community, to keep people from getting sick in the first place. People who are homeless often experience tremendous amounts of healthca...

On today’s episode of Just the Tips, Dean and I welcome Stephanie Blake to the podcast. Stephanie is at the forefront of Facebook Messenger bots, and how they can help marketers take the next step in their field. Stephanie has an amazing and relatable story, being a work-from-home mom with an affinity for taking online courses, and she’s used that to really place herself on the vanguard of bots. We talk with her about how she got into marketing, how she discovered bots, and how you can leverage bots to make your marketing sing. How bots work for your marketing Stephanie is the quintessential entrepreneur. She’s gone from getting laid off by her work-from-home job, to becoming a self-taught expert in a cutting-edge field. And she says bots are really at the forefront because they allow you to interact with your customer on a much more personal, individual level at a time when we’re seeing click-through rates and retention rates on emails and webinars decline. If this is all new to you, or you’re also worried about the effectiveness of your tried-and-true tools, you have to listen to this week’s episode of Just the Tips. Bots are a revolution in communication Stephanie calls bots a communication revolution. And while she’s already seen how Facebook Messenger bots can change things for companies, it’s not stopping there. She told us about how tech giants like Google are asking phone companies to switch from SMS messaging to RCS messaging. And that change will make a seismic shift in how people communicate with their phones, so there will be much more opportunities for dynamic interactions (including buttons, links, etc.) that will be a marketer’s dream. So if you already know how to communicate well with a bot, you’ll be able to jump on when it expands so rapidly. With great bot power comes great bot responsibility Stephanie points to a company called Smart Moms Plan Disney as an example of someone who is using a bot effectively and, well, intelligently. According to Stephanie, the owner of Smart Moms makes her bot very interactive, including having visitors take quizzes or surveys so that she can help serve them better. And Stephanie has some great ideas for how to get people subscribed to a bot beyond simply asking someone to subscribe. This is truly a tip-filled episode of Just the Tips. Bots haven’t killed email lists As Stephanie told us on this week’s Just the Tips, if you have people subscribed to your bot, you don’t own that list. That’s why email lists will never truly be replaced by bots. But while she walks us through a lot of the similarities between bots and email, she says one of the worst things you can do is copy and paste email campaigns into bots. In this episode, Stephanie talks with Naila Rizqi Zakiah, a public lawyer for LBH Masyarakat, a branch of the Indonesian Legal Aid Foundation, about the current plans to revise the Indonesian criminal code under a draft proposal called the RKUHP. As Stephanie and Naila's conversation show, the proposed revision is more concerned about moral policing sexual activities rather than actually address the issues that impact the most marginalized communities. Many people through no fault of their own can potentially go to prison under this proposed criminal code — people such as rape victims, victims of sexual exploitation, teenagers who have consensual sex outside of marriage, couples who have unregistered informal marriages (nikah siri), as well as ethnic minority groups. This major revision to the criminal code is a huge threat to Indonesia's fragile democracy. Please sign this Change.org petition (http://bit.ly/2DWsrLr) addressed to the Parliament and add your name and support to the fight against moral policing Indonesian society!

Is This Battle Worth Fighting?

A couple weeks ago, we asked our friends on our Facebook page to tell us what battles they’re currently fighting in their homes— or choosing not to. As we all know, there are some parenting buttons our children push that are perhaps best left ignored. Then there are dishes left in the sink instead of the immediately adjacent dishwasher, which we believe we have no choice but to interpret as a spouse’s call to arms. In this episode we decide once and for forevermore which of the following battles are worth fighting: * messy playrooms * messy kids’ rooms * food outside the kitchen * co-sleeping children * co-sleeping pets * matching outfits (for school, church, family weddings) * shorts in the winter * picky eating * hats at the dinner table * saying “like” like, every third word Even if a battle is worth— let’s say “skirmishing”— there are more and less productive ways of making your point, and in this episode we lay out what does and doesn’t work for us. We also love Stephanie Dolgoff’s article for Parenting: How To Choose Your Battles. Stephanie suggests creating a short “family-values list” of non-negotiable points (like no name-calling) in a non-confrontational moment. And when all else fails, don’t be afraid to compromise. As Stephanie writes, “When [your kids] see you work out what’s really important, they learn how to work out for themselves what’s really important.” See that? Choose your battles, and you just might win a few. This episode is brought to you by Pip & Grow, makers of the Smitten Sleep System for babies. My guest in this episode of the Your Purpose is Calling Christian business podcast has. In this episode you’ll meet Stephanie Shelow, Founder of Dessert Tours NYC.   A few years ago Stephanie was working in full-time vocational ministry at a megachurch in Florida when she felt God call her to New York City. She knew leaving Florida meant leaving ministry and taking a leap of faith into a new career… even though she had no idea what that career would be. As Stephanie explored New York, praying that God would reveal her next step to her, she had no idea that He already had. An avid baker since she was young, Stephanie spent hours exploring some of the city’s best dessert spots from world-famous bakeries to small, out-of the-way finds. It was through talking about her passion for desserts with friends and a community group of entrepreneurs at her local church in New York that Stephanie discovered that the purpose she was looking for had been under her nose the entire time. In this episode of the Your Purpose is Calling podcast Stephanie talks about how she overcame challenges in launching and growing her business. In this episode Stephanie also talks about: How she discovered her calling almost by accident Wondering if her idea was “serious” enough to glorify God and serve the kingdom The importance of friends and an entrepreneurial community that helped her discover and refine her vision How embracing her own authenticity helped her find joy in her calling What ministry looks like now If you’ve ever thought about turning your passion into a purpose (and profits) then Stephanie’s story is sure to inspire you.
