This week, we're starting a new series looking at witnesses of Christmas in scripture during the advent season. Our series begins with a look at one of the ancient voices that foretold Jesus' coming in Micah 5. Join us as we explore the expectations that were set for the coming of the messiah, how Jesus exceeded those expectations, and what it means for us today! Could the Egyptian Sphinx have been built many centuries earlier than conventional history would have us believe? Could the great natural disasters that propelled the evolution of life on Earth have played a dominant role as well in the rise and fall of civilizations? Could Earth have been home to civilizations far greater in number -- and far older -- than orthodox researchers have suspected?  From his geological analysis of the Sphinx,  Dr. Robert M. Schoch  draws a conclusion that he admits is controversial: that a technologically advanced civilization rose and faded in Egypt long before the time of the pyramids. Adding speculative science and drawing on myth, he asserts that other similarly advanced civilizations flourished around the world, only to be obliterated by global catastrophes brought on by a century-long rain of asteroid impacts. Similar cosmic storms strike once a millennium, he says, triggering or ending ice ages, causing floods, earthquakes and volcanic eruptions of biblical proportion, precipitating shifts in the earths axis.Robert Milton Schoch is an American associate professor of Natural Sciences at the College of General Studies, Boston University. From the Archives: This live interview was recorded on June 19 1999 on the nationally syndicated radio program, hosted by Laura Lee . This week I speak with Joanne Hagemeyer. When she received her own Bible at the age of nine, she read the whole book, from preface to concordance, with transcendent joy, knowing these were the very words of God. Today, Joanne continues in God's call to teach, counsel, mentor, and train in God's word and Spirit through retreats, Bible studies, and online classes. After leading and teaching a Bible class of 350–500 students from 2003 to 2013, Joanne retired in 2018 as an advisor and mentor to eight Bible classes in the Maryland area through Bible Study Fellowship. She began teaching and speaking through Ancient Voices, Sacred Stories, LLC, then founded Grace and Peace, Joanne. Joanne earned her Master of Arts in Theological Studies from Portland Seminary and serves as a member of both the pastoral team and pulpit teaching team of her church. A long-time amateur archaeologist, Joanne joined the Board of Directors for the Biblical Archaeology Forum in 2013 and has participated in two excavations, Tel Kabri and Tel Akko, Israel. We look at Joanne's life from childhood to the present and are so encouraged by the beautiful thread of Jesus working in her life!! Episode 46: The Great Opeongo Lake - Times Before 1893 In this and the next two episodes, I will focus on sharing as much history as I can about Algonquin's largest body of water, Lake Opeongo. Much of the content comes from a now out-of-print 1998 book by S. Bernard Shaw, called Lake Opeongo:  Untold Stories of Algonquin Park's Largest Lake. I'm also for the first time, going to try to share as much as I know about the indigenous Lake Opeongo experience.  For this, I depend upon two sources by Chief Kirby Whiteduck of the Algonquins of Pikwakanagan including a 2001 Algonquin Park TED TALK and Chapter Two in Mike Walton's 2009 Algonquin Park: The Human Impact. On today’s date in 1935, the Kolisch Quartet gave the premiere performance of Bela Bartok’s String Quartet No. 5 in the auditorium of the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. That performance was part of a chamber music festival sponsored by Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge, one of the 20th century’s great musical patrons. In 1925, she created a Foundation to enable the Library of Congress to present concerts and commission new works in the nation’s capital Among the major American works commissioned by the Coolidge Foundation were Aaron Copland’s “Appalachian Spring” and George Crumb’s “Ancient Voices of Children.” Coolidge herself was an accomplished musician and amateur composer. One of her chief advisors was the Dutch cellist and conductor Hans Kindler, who once contacted Sibelius with a Coolidge commission for a new cello concerto, which, sadly, never materialized. It was Kindler who suggested commissioning a string quartet from Bartok, this time with success. After its premiere, the critic for The Musical Courier wrote: “Mr. Bartok’s [new quartet] is impressionistic and well-wrought.” The critic for Musical America was less impressed: “It honestly treats folk melody with a healthy vigor . . . [but] there is … no subtle play of light and shade.”

Soprano Tony Arnold joins us to chat about hopping careers from orchestral conductor to international superstar vocalist, her varied interests in how sound is made and how to harness sound to make it into something else, and the way her interests have helped in collaborations with all sorts of instrumentalists and in teaching composers how to help performers lift music off the page . We speak about how she developed the working knowledge necessary to decipher contemporary scores, the close connection between chamber music and contemporary music, and learning how to fit into the deeply intimate and idiomatic language of a string quartet with a long history that no longer required verbal communication. She shares about how her connection to George Crumb deepened on a trip to Charleston, WV and how community- and network-building play in forming long-lasting professional connections. We discuss how the COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the impact of digitization on the shaping of the musical world and the importance of separating music-making from money-making as best as one can. Celebrated as a “luminary in the world of chamber music and art song” (Huffington Post), Tony Arnold is internationally acclaimed as a leading proponent of contemporary music in concert and recording, a “convincing, mesmerizing soprano” (Los Angeles Times) who “has a broader gift for conveying the poetry and nuance behind outwardly daunting contemporary scores” (Boston Globe). Her unique blend of vocal virtuosity and communicative warmth, combined with wide-ranging skills in education and leadership were recognized with the 2015 Brandeis Creative Arts Award, given in appreciation of “excellence in the arts and the lives and works of distinguished, active American artists.” Ms. Arnold's extensive chamber music repertory includes major works written for her voice by Georges Aperghis, George Crumb, Brett Dean, Jason Eckardt, Gabriela Lena Frank, Josh Levine, George Lewis, Philippe Manoury, Carlos Sanchez-Gutierrez, Christopher Theofanidis, Ricardo Zohn-Muldoon, and numerous others. She is a member of the intrepid International Contemporary Ensemble, and enjoys regular guest appearances with leading ensembles, presenters and festivals worldwide. With more than thirty discs to her credit, Ms. Arnold has recorded a broad segment of the modern vocal repertory with esteemed chamber music colleagues. Her recording of George Crumb's iconic Ancient Voices of Children (Bridge) received a 2006 Grammy nomination. She is a first-prize laureate of both the Gaudeamus International and the Louise D. McMahon competitions. A graduate of Oberlin College and Northwestern University, Ms. Arnold was twice a fellow of the Aspen Music Festival as both a conductor and singer. She was the 2015-16 Kunkemueller Artist-In-Residence at the Boston Conservatory, and currently serves on the faculty of the Peabody Conservatory and the Tanglewood Music Center.
