Over the past week, Florida Atlantic accomplished something it hadn't since the Final Four season. Also, choose your feel-good breakout: KyKy Tandy, Matas Vokietaitis, Nico Moretti? Baba Miller hit a milestone this past week that only he has accomplished in all of college basketball season, and in addition to that, Ken explains why he was most impressed with something not actually done on the floor this week but, instead, by something Nico admitted to him after the USF win. In this episode, Minnick and Rogner reflect on Florida State's 2023-2024 basketball season — an inconsistent and frustrating year from the Seminoles that the duo attributes to a lack of competitiveness and defensive issues. The two also talk about the ACC's performance in the tournament, noting the conference's overachievement relative to seeding and discussing reasons behind this trend, such as the ACC being undervalued by metrics and poor conference scheduling: a reflection of ACC leadership's strategies and the conference's overall management, especially in comparison to other conferences. Yes, you're reading this correctly — Florida State is on a four-game win streak, now 10-6 on the season and 4-1 on the ACC just a month after dropping a buy game to Lipscomb. With the resurgence of the Seminoles, its only fitting to drop a new episode of the Gospel of Ham — the only Florida State basketball-focused podcast around. On the latest show, Matt Minnick and Michael Rogner recap everything that's happened with the Noles since they last spoke — from disappointing losses via blown leads to a newfound spark within the squad buoyed by the defense. In a detailed breakdown, they analyze FSU's rise in KenPom rankings, scrutinizing the team's struggle in December and its subsequent upturn in January — as well FSU's chances of making the NCAA tournament. The conversation also centers around key players like Primo Spears, Baba Miller, Jaylen Gainey, and Bol Bowen, discussing their pivotal roles in the team's improvement. In addition, the duo breaks down FSU's next two opponents: the Miami Hurricanes and Clemson Tigers, the latter of which sees Matt calling his shot for the Seminoles to upset the Tigers by 10.

NCAA – US appeals court to weigh NCAA case over pay for athletes The NCAA hopes a federal appeals court will soon block a lawsuit that seeks to treat athletes as employees who are paid for their time. It is the latest test of amateurism in college sports. The Division I athletes who filed the suit being argued next month want hourly wages similar to those earned in work-study programs. Schwartz spent the past two seasons as a defensive adviser for Tennessee. Cleveland's search for a coordinator began last week when coach Kevin Stefanski fired Joe Woods after three seasons. The 56-year-old Schwartz began his NFL career as a scout with Cleveland in the 1990s. He will take over the Browns’ defense once he signs his contract, according to the person who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because that hasn't happened yet. Nadal pulled up awkwardly at the end of a point late in the second set against the 65th-ranked McDonald. ESPN reported the school's police department is investigating a report of computer access crimes from last month at Schembechler Hall, where coach Jim Harbaugh and his staff have offices and the Wolverines practice. Weiss said in a statement to ESPN that he is fully cooperating with investigators and looks forward to the matter being resolved. The Associated Press left messages seeking comment from Weiss and the university police department. They say the nation's colleges are violating fair labor practices by failing to pay them for the time they put into their sports. Baylor University President Linda Livingston, chairperson of the NCAA’s Board of Governors, says the idea would have a “potentially catastrophic impact on college sports.” NFL – Warren ready to embrace new challenge as Bears president Kevin Warren is ready to tackle a new challenge as president and CEO of the Chicago Bears, and he has a big one going from Big Ten commissioner to leading a founding NFL franchise. A new suburban stadium could be on the horizon. The team owns the No. 1 pick in the draft coming off one of the worst seasons in franchise history. And he's looking forward to working with general manager Ryan Poles and coach Matt Eberflus. He says he's a “big believer in challenges” and wouldn't have been as attracted to the job “if it were easy.” NFL – Browns hire Jim Schwartz as defensive coordinator A person familiar with the decision says the Cleveland Browns have hired former Detroit Lions coach Jim Schwartz as their defensive coordinator. Schwartz previously worked as a coordinator with the Titans, Bills and Eagles. He won a Super Bowl running Philadelphia's defense in 2017. Tennis – Australian Open – Hampered by bad hip, Nadal out in 2nd Rd of Australian Open Rafael Nadal says his hip was injured during a second-round loss at the Australian Open to Mackenzie McDonald. The 6-4, 6-4, 7-5 defeat abruptly ended Nadal’s title defense and bid for a record-extending 23rd Grand Slam trophy. Nadal pulled up awkwardly at the end of a point late in the second set against the 65th-ranked McDonald. The No. 1-seeded Nadal was visited by a trainer on the sideline and then left the court for a medical timeout. His wife wiped away tears up in the stands. Nadal returned to play but was physically compromised and not his usual chase-every-ball self. After the Florida State Seminoles started the 2022-23 season with a 1-9 record head coach Leonard Hamilton and his staff had to adjust and reconfigure, adapting from regularly having a roster of experienced players and trying to build cohesion behind FSU's newcomers amid a flurry of availability issues. In the month of December the Noles had a 4-3 record, which isn't incredibly eye-opening, but it shows that development within the roster is improving. The Seminoles currently stand at 5-11, ranked as the No. 4 team in the ACC. A tremendous part of their recent success has been the play of sophomore Matthew Cleveland. He came into the Seminoles program as a highly touted prospect, but there were technical issues to be dealt with before Cleveland took a step forward in his game. The biggest red flag was Cleveland's shooting ability, finishing the 2021-22 season with a 17.9% three-point percentage and a 55.5% free-throw percentage. Those numbers have massively improved after Cleveland spent a large portion of the offseason working on his shooting form. With a smoother jump shot in his arsenal, Cleveland is now shooting 42.9% (highest percentage on the roster) from distance and 74.3% from the free throw line. He also leads the Seminoles in scoring and rebounding, averaging 14.4 points and 7.2 rebounds per game. Cleveland's constant effort on the glass has led to five-straight double-doubles, becoming the first Seminole to do so since Doug Edwards in the 1991-92 season. Florida State has a hefty plate on their schedule with ACC opponents scattered throughout the next few months; with the addition of Baba Miller in their next game, the Noles can make some noise in the conference. Following the Seminoles win against Georgia Tech, Tomahawk Nation spoke with Cleveland on his newfound leadership role, thoughts on the Noles season, and the potential the current truly has. Perhaps you've been distracted by FSU football being good again. Perhaps your tv subscription expired, or you haven't been able to drive to the Tuck, and your radio died, and you forgot how to use the internet, and your neighbor's dog steals the newspaper, and all your friends who love basketball left town. If so, you may be wondering exactly how good the 'Noles look this year. I mean, there's a core returning quartet of Matthew Cleveland, Caleb Mills, Cam'Ron Fletcher, and Jalen Warley. There are critical transfers in Jaylen Gainey and Darin Green. And the freshmen class looks to be the best in years with Baba Miller, De'Ante Green, Cameron Corhen, Tom House, Jeremiah Bembry and Chandler Jackson. Let's get excited, people! Well....we've got some news for you. Gainey blew his knee and will be out all year. So will De'Ante Green. So will Bembry. Chandler Jackson broke his thumb. Fletcher can't practice. And the jewel of the newcomers - Baba Miller - is suspended by the NCAA for a half a year because he attended his own team's training camp. Has anyone else noticed that FSU hoops has been cursed since Covid hit? Luckily the season opened against Stetson. Even with just 8 scholarship players, surely they'd roll Stetson. Right? The next game was tougher. A road game at UCF. How'd it go? Well, through two games there in one team in college basketball (looking at you Mississippi Valley State) that has been worse on the defensive glass than Florida State. And the rest of the defense has been intriguing at best. And the offense? Well, there's a ball and a basket and sometimes the two meet. So here we are, two games into the bright and shiny new season. Come along as Matt and Michael provide some insight. It's gonna be a long season folks, so get comfortable and go 'Noles. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Adam Spinella is back for the second part of a promised two-part episode this week, with us diving deep into the 2023 NBA Draft class with some bold predictions heading into the college basketball season. We talk about Duke's freshman four, overall outlooks on the class, the upperclass prospects heading into the year, Ausar Thompson, Jalen Hood-Schifino, Indiana, and more. But first, we start with the NCAA's Baba Miller decision, as the organization handed down a 16-game suspension to the Spanish freshman forward that defies comprehension. Then, around the one-hour mark, Sam chats with Dayton center DaRon Holmes. Holmes is considered a potential 2023 NBA Draft prospect, and a likely breakout player in college basketball. Sam and DaRon chat about how he ended up at Dayton, how he got involved in basketball, and then they break down tape for 25 minutes, discussing his rim-running, his passing, his jumper and his defensive ability across the board. Welcome in to Noles News Now, your audio home for all things happening in Florida State athletics on the Tomahawk Nation podcast network. A victory and record breaking  Monday for the FSU football team as they enter rivalry week. Thanks so much for tuning in. I'm Brian Pellerin on this Monday October 31st. Happy Halloween.  That record breaking effort came from the football team in a blowout win over Georgia Tech. The Yellow Jackets were clearly no match for FSU as evidence by the 41-16 final score. The Noles were far from perfect in the game and still dominated the yardage, first downs and of course points. Jordan Travis broke his personal passing yardage mark with 394. That was a big piece of a larger FSU historical game as this game was the third time in FSU history that they had a QB throw for 375, a running back for over 100 -- Trey Benson's 111 -- and a wide receiver over 100 with Johnny Wilson going for 111 as well.  Another big note was Fabian Lovett made his first appearance since the second game of the season. A huge piece to have back heading into rivalry week against Miami.  The Canes coming off a 4-OT 14-12 win this weekend against Virginia that saw no touchdowns. They're far from playing their best football and oddsmakers will tell you that. FSU is an 8-point favorite on this one Sunday night. We'll see if that moves during the week.  A win this week would give FSU bowl eligibility but also a nice welcome to the conference to Mario Cristobal. A statement victory could also help in some recruiting battles with the Canes. Mike Norvell and the coaching staff had plenty of potential Tribe 23 guys on campus this past week. For more on that, you can check out our recruiting and portal thread with plenty of great insight all for free.  Elsewhere on campus, FSU basketball hit with some bad news this weekend as the NCAA announced star freshman Baba Miller violated guidelines when his family received travel to and from a training camp from his native Spain to the U-S. That ruling puts Miller out of action for half the season. Miller and his family say they immediately paid back the benefits once they learned it violated NCAA rules. Athletic Director Michael Alford was none too pleased with the ruling saying the decision seems disproportionate and inconsistent in today's modern environment. Miller will continue to practice with the team so he's ready to return after his 16-game suspension.  The FSU volleyball team dropped a 4-set match to Boston College on Sunday. They'll face Clemson next on Friday.  Women's basetball dominated West Georgia 115-46 in an exhibition game.  And the No. 5 soccer team closed out their regular season with a 4-1 win over Virginia Tech.  That'll do it for today's Noles News Now. Until Wednesday, I'm Brian Pellerin. Hey! A hoops pod. No. 49 to be exact - we were hoping to save No. 50 for a national title recap but we'll try and squeeze some in between here and there. Maybe you've heard that some weird rumblings in the college football world are taking place. It's like LIV Golf only it matters. Looking forward, conference matchups like UCLA-Rutgers are gonna be lit. But we take a look from a basketball perspective (really, an all sports besides football perspective) which will hopefully come to fruition. Let football do its thing, and let the other sports maintain some sort of regional focus. After some conference talk (and yes, Minnesota really is a cool place to go see a game) we talk about the sport that matters: college basketball. Florida State is currently touring Canada which is full of nice people and maple syrup, and playing some games along the way. When you have so many new faces, having trips like this are priceless - just don't pay too much attention to the box scores. Oh, and four guys are out: Matthew Cleveland, De'Ante Green, Baba Miller, and Jeremiah Bembry. So one fake game into the season and we already have a walk-on in the starting lineup. Some things never change. Like Canada. After a break where we advertise something that is very important but I'm not sure what it is, we spend a few minutes gushing over FSU's sole 2023 recruit Taylor Bowen. It's hard to predict a class size because technically no one has to leave (assuming Gainey is awarded a Covid year), but we know it is at least one. And he's a good one. And that's that. Enjoy! It's been a while since Matt and Michael sat down to talk hoops. In this episode (Number 48!), they are joined by Tomahawk Nation's Max Escarpio. Max has interviewed Baba Miller and Darren Green Jr., and talked to many of the other players off line. So the guys pick his brain about what he's learned about this team so far. Hint: everyone is pretty excited. Once Max drops off, M&M going in depth on the John Butler departure. It would have been great to have all three of the freshmen from last year's team return, but that was not in the cards. Butler is obviously a loss, but how big? And is immediate help on the way? After the Butler deep dive, they spend a while discussing roles, fit, and depth. Florida State basketball under Leonard Hamilton has prided itself on being the deepest team in the ACC, but we have not seen that in recent years - due to injuries and poor fits. What about this team? They also touch on the NBA with Luke Loucks joining the Sacramento Kings as an assistant coach. With Sam Cassell seemingly on the trajectory toward becoming a NBA head coach, could the 'Noles end up with two? Plus, they talk about some of the players in the NBA, and close with a quick check-in on the US Open. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

In a boost to its 2022 recruiting class, FSU hoops has added overseas prospect Baba Miller. The 6-foot-10 Real Madrid product is arguably one of the biggest additions of Florida State basketball's 2022 class. Miller has been in the professional basketball atmosphere for years, having signed with Real Madrid at 12 years old, per ID Prospects. He's known for his fluid, smooth game with exceptional ball-handling and shooting. Miller's decision came down to FSU and WCC powerhouse Gonzaga, which are the only official visits he took to the United States. The Seminoles head into the 2022-23 season with a relatively young group of players, having lost their entire starting five in the offseason. The class of 2022 includes Chandler Jackson, Cameron Corhen, De'Ante Green, Jeremiah Bembry, and Tom House, along with transfers Darin Green Jr. and Jaylan Gainey. Head coach Leonard Hamilton and his staff will yet again be prepared to play with a deep lineup of 8-10 players. With the addition of Miller, FSU's 2022 class is highlighted by their size and ability to guard multiple positions, while being able to spread the floor on the offensive end. Miller's decision to join the Noles was likely enticed by the idea of making an immediate impact on a program to prepare for the NBA. Multiple scouts and coaches around the league have had Miller on their radar for quite some time. He'll likely use the 2022 season to adjust his body and skill set, while being able to play on a national stage in one of college basketball's best conferences. He'll likely get to Tallahassee in the next couple of weeks to start preparing for a more physical, defensive-minded game at Florida State. Miller's skillset will act as a Swiss Army knife, being able to knock down shots from the midrange and outside the three. His ball-handling is stellar for a player his size, and he'll definitely be useful in the post if he continues to add more weight. Seminole fans should be ecstatic that Miller will be in garnet and gold, as he looks to be another classic Hamilton blueprint product. Learn more about your ad choices. Thanks for starting your week with us. The biggest headline heading into today comes on a sad note as the Florida State baseball team's season has come to an end in the Auburn Regional. The Noles opened the weekend with a victory over UCLA on Friday afternoon. Parker Messick took the win in that one holding the Bruins to 2 runs over 5 innings. The bullpen chipped in 4 one-run innings to close it out. The winner's bracket game on Saturday though, wasn't as successful for the Noles on the hill as Auburn wallopped Florida State to a 21-7 final score... Yeah, it sounds like a football score. Four errors in that one didn't exactly help the Seminoles either. Regardless, they'd need one hell of arun on Sunday to keep the season alive, but they couldn't find the bats in the elimination game against UCLA as the Bruins got revenge and sent them packing with a 2-1final. The Noles who were top 15 in the preseason polls ended up as one of the last teams into the tournament and taking third place in the regional... a long shoutfrom where they hoped the season would end. We're still about 2 months from football season, but the recruiting year never stops. For Mike Norvell's group, it's camp time. Saturday started with the annual elite Camp. The goal is a pretty simple one — get some of the nation's top prospects on campus for workouts... meet the coaches and tour the facilities. The group that came to Tallahassee included every 2023 commit including 5-star running back Kam Davis, 4-star Q-B Chris Parson, and 3-star Q-B Luke Kromenhook. Parson did announce while speaking with the media that he plans on taking some official visits to other schools for the first time since committing to FSU so something to keep an eye on. As we counting down to the start of the season, the Seminole Wrap podcast crew including yours truly, Jon Marchant, and Max Escarpio took a look at the five most important players for Florida State this year. That's not necessarily the 5 best players but the 5 that will need to play a big role if this team hopes to take a step forward in 2022. We get some good back and forth in a 20-30 minute episode. I think it's a fun listen so give it a shot and let us know who you think we may have missed. Meanwhile, a current leader on the Noles offensive line continues to collect honors for his work off the field. Dillan Gibbons won the Starfish Award from the Big BendBoys and Girls Club. Congrats Dillan. A guy who has been incredibly impactful with his platform. Keep up the good work. We're proud to call you a Seminole. And one more thing to keep an eye on today in the hoops world is Baba Miller who is set to announce his next destination today. The 6-foot-10 Spaniard could be a big impact on the wing for the Noles. So check in with Tomahawk Nation throughout the day to see if he's Tally bound. That'll do it for today's edition of Noles News Now. Thank you for listening and remember to rate and review this podcast if you like what you're hearing. I'm BrianPellerin. We'll see you again on Wednesday. Learn more about your ad choices.
