Are we ready for some Romulans?! The drama of it all! In this episode of Holodeck Divas we discuss the classic Star Trek Original Series episode "Balance of Terror" (s1e14). The historical signifcance of this episode can't be overstated, but it is still a television show that was made in 1966, so not everything aged very well. Still, Kirk had a classic line in this episode that set the stage for the rest of The Trek. Listen and find out what the divas had to say about this episode!
Israeli tanks and troops that entered Gaza on Friday are now focusing on encircling Gaza City – the population hub of the northern part of the strip. This comes after Benjamin Netanyahu's announcement on Saturday that Israel had entered a “long and difficult” new stage of the war. He stopped short of calling this new phase an all-out invasion, but airstrikes have escalated along with an advancing ground incursion. This strategy could have further implications for the region, and Israel's allies in the West – including Canada – will be looking to figure out their parts in this ongoing war.Thomas Juneau is on the show to help us understand this next phase of the war and what it could mean geopolitically. He's an associate professor at the University of Ottawa's Graduate School of Public and International Affairs whose research focuses on the Middle East as well as Canadian foreign and defence policy.Questions? Got some bigotry on the bridge, maman. No room for it there. Keep it in your quarters, maman. After more than a century the Romulans are back, and they look eerily like the first officer. Is there a spy on board? Or just a d-bag? Tensions are high, maman.Review This Episode:Star Trek 1x09 "Balance of Terror"Hosts This Episode:David C. Happy 2023 everybody. We all hope you had a great holiday season. This time of year, many of us find ourselves at parties with coworkers having conversations we wouldn't normally have, and here aboard our starship, it's no different. Occasionally you find yourself in a conversation that you were not prepared for, like when your new Transporter Chief officer says something like “I never understood the appeal of Star Trek”. Once we were all done hitting him with our Lirpas, we realized this could actually be used as a teaching moment. We invited our new Transporter Chief Eric to watch one of the best, if not the absolute best of the episodes from the original Star Trek, Balance of Terror. Q. What does this episode of RetroTube have in common with the 1998 Belgian Grand Prix?A. Start Wreck. Now I've got that off my chest, it's time for long-term non-Trekker Adam to be introduced to two episodes of Star Trek by Heather, the world's biggest Leonard McCoy fangirl, ho boy, and how, yes indeed. And you'll be pleased to know that a) at no point do they mention the words, "Beam me up, Scotty", and b), you won't hear a single note of *that song*. You know the one I mean. We're a classy podcast. This is part one of two - they got a little bit overexcited and talked for two and a half hours. Balance of Terror is discussed in this episode, This Side of Paradise in the next. So, wearing the purple uniform of the Starfleet podcasting division, Adam and Heather buckle up and knuckle down to some serious Trekkery. The Salty Nerds take a look at Star Trek TOS - Balance of Terror! This is the episode of the Original Series where the Romulans are introduced into the Star Trek universe and Captain Kirk matches wits with the Romulan commander in a deadly game of cat-and-mouse that is reminiscent of World War 2 submarine battles. William Shatner delivers one of his best performances as James T. Kirk in this episode, and Leonard Nimoy as Spock has to deal with a lot of bigotry against Vulcans. This is one of Alex's and Kadish's favorite Star Trek episodes because it reminds them of their favorite submarine movies like The Hunt For Red October and Run Silent Run Deep. We also get a lot of great Star Trek Lore-Building in this episode as we're introduced to the Neutral Zone and the Romulan War.If you enjoy Star Trek and want access to the FULL retrospective review of our take on Balance Of Terror, be sure to check out our members area where you not only get access to this review, but many other exclusive episodes that cover shows like Foundation, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Doctor Who, Firefly, Stargate Atlantis, Orphan Black, Eureka, and more! In this episode of Trekking Through Compliance, we consider the episode Balance of Terror, which aired on December 15, 1966, Star Date 1709.1 Enterprise investigates the lack of response from Earth outposts 2 and 3, monitoring the Neutral Zone between planets Romulus and Remus and the rest of the galaxy. The Earth outposts have been constructed on asteroids and were authorized by treaty following the atomic war with the Romulans more than a century earlier. No human or Romulan, however, has ever seen the another. As the Enterprise communicates with outpost 4, Commander Hansen reports an attack underway by an unknown weapon from a spaceship which subsequently vanished. The Romulan commander questions his mission of starting a war and discusses it with his Centurion. The Enterprise and Romulan ship exchange fire. The Enterprise then sits motionless, hoping the Romulan ship will make a move and reveal itself. They do so, and the Romulan ship is rendered inoperative, and its captain self-destructs. Does anyone have the answer? I don't.As far as I can tell, the first appearance of the streaky star effect (where all the stars blur into lines streaking past the Enterprise when it goes into warp) was in Star Trek II: Wrath of Khan, the second Star Trek movie. Wrath of Khan came out in 1982, five years after Star Wars debuted in 1977. Which means Star Wars did it first, as far as I can tell (someone correct me if I'm wrong). In the opening credits for the Original Series, we definitely get a whooshing noise as the Enterprise zooms through space, but no streaky star effect.

The Court of Appeal in Abuja today stopped Rivers and Lagos State Governments from collecting Value Added Taxes (VAT). Specifically, the appellate court halted the Rivers State government from collecting VAT until all legal disputes relating to the matter are resolved. The court ordered that the judgment of the state high court from which the state drew authorities to collect the tax must not be implemented. In this episode of The Big Issue, we discuss the VAT war which took a new twist when the 36 states of the federation, through their Attorneys-General, yesterday dragged the Federal Government to the Supreme Court over alleged failure to remit funds generated from stamp duties into state accounts. #vat #politics
We kick off our “Best of TOS” series with “Balance of Terror”. We venture to sharpen our appreciation of the show that started it all by taking a look back, starting with a battle of tactical wits and a fight against bigotry. Join in on the fun in a staple of “The Original Series”.
Balance of Terror was the fourteenth episode of Star Trek‘s debut season to air, with a skilled adversary presenting a tough examination of Kirk's battle craft. In this episode Gerry and Iain debate the rights and wrongs of bearing grudges from your ancestors' wars. Responding to a distress call from an outpost bordering the Neutral Zone between Federation and Romulan space, Kirk and the Enterprise are thrust into conflict with an enemy unseen in over a century when fired upon by a Romulan Warbird and its commander (Mark Lenard). Casualties of the conflict included a Romulan Centurion (John Warburton), the Romulan officer Decius (Lawrence Montaigne) and the Enterprise phaser operator Lt Tomlinson (Stephen Mines), who had been due to marry fellow officer Angela Martine (Barbara Baldavin) that day. Lt. Stiles (Paul Comi) was saved from a similar fate by the quick thinking of Spock, who he had suspected of being a Romulan infiltrator for much of the episode. Balance of Terror was directed by Vincent McEveety, the third of six episodes he helmed. The episode was written by Paul Schneider, who wrote one further episode of the series, along with an episode of The Animated Series. In this episode Gerry and Iain considered what friendship there is to be found between two warring adversaries and whether a foolish man builds his house upon an asteroid. You can listen to the show here on the website, on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, Pocket Casts, TuneIn, Stitcher, Google or wherever you find your podcasts. Balance of Terror was released in 1966. It is 50 minutes long and originally aired on the NBC network. It can be viewed on CBS All Access in the United states, Netflix in the UK and is available on DVD and Blu Ray in other countries, including a comprehensive remastered set of all three seasons released by Paramount Home Entertainment.

This is Part 2 of our Episode about BALANCE OF TERROR which is one of Ken's favorite episodes. He gives us a nice little history of the Federation and the Romulans. Matt heaps more love for Shatner than anyone should. (But he deserves it) Plus we get a little symbolism of the Cold War which was happening in the world at the time. We get a wedding, some deaths, the introduction of some Romulans. Ken also spends the last few minutes discussing how the Captain's change from show to show. all that and so much more in an epic 1 hour and 25 minute episode!
