Big news out of Marvel Comics today: Stephen Wacker has been named the company's new Editor-in-Chief. Given all the executive changes Marvel has gone through in recent years, it's encouraging to see someone with deep comic book experience taking the reins of the publishing line.Wacker's résumé extends well beyond editing comics. In addition to overseeing some of Marvel's biggest publishing initiatives, he also served as Vice President of Marvel Animation and later as Vice President of Marvel New Media, helping guide projects like the Marvel Audio Universe on SiriusXM, including Wolverine and other serialized Marvel audio dramas. To celebrate the news, we're going back to this 2012 Word Balloon conversation with Stephen. It's a fascinating snapshot of Marvel during one of its most creative periods. We talk about the birth of Spider-Man's Brand New Day era, Dan Slott's early run on Amazing Spider-Man, Greg Rucka's Punisher, and Mark Waid's acclaimed Daredevil. Stephen also gets into the weeds on major crossover events like Spider-Island, Shadowland, and DC's The New 52, while pulling back the curtain on Marvel's creator retreats and the collaborative process behind building the Marvel Universe.Ok, yes, this conversation is now more than a decade old, but I think it still provides a valuable window into how Steve Wacker thinks about comics—how he approaches storytelling, editorial decisions, and working with creators. Until I have the chance to sit down with him again, this interview answers a lot of the questions newer readers may have about the philosophy and instincts of the man now leading Marvel Comics. Enjoy this 2012 conversation with Marvel's new Editor-in-Chief, Stephen Wacker.

This week on Fantastic Forum, we are celebrating the return of one of Marvel Animation's biggest hits and the long-awaited comeback of one of comics' greatest crime sagas. First up is X-Men '97 Season 2, as Marvel's beloved mutants return for another season of action, drama, and world-shaking consequences. Featuring the returning voice cast led by Ray Chase (Cyclops), Jennifer Hale (Jean Grey), Alison Sealy-Smith (Storm), Lenore Zann (Rogue), George Buza (Beast), A.J. LoCascio (Gambit), and Cal Dodd (Wolverine), the new season picks up after the explosive finale of Season 1 with the X-Men scattered across time and space. We are breaking down the premiere, the new direction for the team, and whether the series continues to honor the legacy of the original while forging its own path. Then we turn to 100 Bullets: The U.S. of Anger #1, marking the return of the acclaimed Vertigo crime saga from Brian Azzarello and Eduardo Risso, with lettering by Clem Robins. Set years after the events of the original series, this new chapter follows Brother Lono as he emerges into an America more divided and volatile than ever before. Told in stark black and white, Azzarello and Risso revisit the brutal world that earned 100 Bullets multiple Eisner Awards, delivering a noir thriller that examines violence, vengeance, and the state of a nation on the edge. X-MEN '97 SEASON 2 & DC GREEN LANTERNS OFFICIAL TRAILER REACTION & BREAKDOWN!! Check out the DC Studios: Showcase Podcast HERE https://app.magellan.ai/listen_links/... Greg & Coy dive into two of the most exciting trailer drops in the comic book world: Marvel Animation's X-Men '97 Season 2 and HBO/DC Studios' upcoming Green Lantern series, Lanterns. From nostalgic mutant mayhem to cosmic detective drama, we break down all the biggest moments, reveals, and what they could mean moving forward. First up, the X-Men '97 Season 2 trailer teases the next chapter following the shocking events of Season 1. Fan-favorite mutants return, including Cyclops, Jean Grey, Rogue, Storm, Beast, Gambit, and Wolverine—with voice talent like Ray Chase (Final Fantasy XV, Demon Slayer) as Cyclops and Jennifer Hale (Mass Effect, The Last of Us) as Jean Grey continuing to lead the charge. The footage hints at deeper fallout within the team, escalating threats, and the possible rise of iconic villains like Mr. Sinister and Apocalypse, all while maintaining the bold, retro animation style that made the revival a hit. We also break down the first look at Lanterns, the highly anticipated DC series centered on the Green Lantern Corps. The show stars Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights, Bloodline) as veteran Lantern Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre (Rebel Ridge, Krypton) as John Stewart, pairing two iconic ring-bearers in what's being described as a grounded, True Detective-style mystery on Earth. The trailer hints at a darker tone, intergalactic stakes, and possible connections to the broader DC Universe, with teases of the Guardians of the Universe and the emotional spectrum mythology. Other confirmed Characters for X-Men '97 S2 include: Scott Summers / Cyclops, Jean Grey, Ororo Munroe / Storm, Logan / Wolverine, Morph, Rogue, Dr. Henry “Hank” McCoy / Beast, Erik “Magnus” Lehnsherr / Magneto, Professor Charles Xavier, Apocalypse / En Sabah Nur, Kurt Wagner / Nightcrawler, X-Force, & more... Join us as we react to every standout moment, speculate on what's coming next, and discuss how both Marvel and DC are shaping the future of their on-screen universes. The X-Men '97 Season 2 trailer just dropped and there is a lot to unpack, from Rogue's mission to get back to Gambit to a three-timeline structure that pulls in the past, the 90s, and the future. Apocalypse appears across every timeline, Deadpool gets a transition moment that opens the door for bigger things, and a Rama-Tut appearance raises real questions about how Marvel handles a Kang variant after the Jonathan Majors situation.Frank also covers the behind-the-scenes shakeups, including Beau DeMayo writing most of season two before his departure, a nod to the iconic 1982 Wolverine cover, and the July 1st release plan that kicks off at the Tribeca Film Festival. Plus, a heads up on a long-awaited sit down with Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, the voice behind Uncle Iroh in Netflix's Avatar: The Last Airbender, Carson in The Mandalorian and Grogu, and Appa in Kim's Convenience.00:00 X-Men '97 Season 2 Trailer Drop and Rogue and Gambit00:14 Three Timeline Structure and Team Splits00:32 Deadpool Transition and Rama-Tut Casting Question00:47 Beau DeMayo Writing Season 2 Before Exit01:06 Apocalypse Across Timelines and 1982 Wolverine Cover Nod01:21 AJ and Lenore Voice Actor Interviews on YouTube01:32 Paul Sun-Hyung Lee Interview PreviewRogue trying to get back to Gambit is shaping up as a major season two thread, and Gambit is clearly not staying gone. The season is structured across three timelines, the past, the 90s, and the future, with the X-Men split into different teams.Apocalypse appears to be the main villain in every timeline.Rama-Tut shows up in the trailer, raising questions about who voices the Kang variant after Jonathan Majors' Marvel exit.Beau DeMayo wrote most of season two before leaving, so the writing tone should feel consistent with season one.The series releases July 1st with an early premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival."X-Men 97 season two trailer just released.
