On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got an episode for the drummers and those who like a great story: Jon Wurster and Stewart Copeland. Copeland is of course the drummer for the legendary, gazillion-selling Rock and Roll Hall of Famers the Police, who were called “the biggest band in the world” during their mid-'80s heyday. Their hits have endured over the decades, too, and that's in no small part due to the special chemistry the trio enjoyed—and that chemistry, as you'll hear, often manifested itself in fights between Copeland and his old bandmate Sting. Copeland has made a fascinating career for himself since; he directed a documentary about his old band that made interesting use of their music, and he's got a new album and tour called Police Deranged for Orchestra, which features those classic songs redone in wild new ways. As you'll hear in this chat, Copeland also found a side career as a film composer, working on everything from Oliver Stone's Wall Street to the classic Francis Ford Coppola movie Rumble Fish. Check out a little bit of “Every Little Thing She Does is Magic“ from Police Deranged for Orchestra right here. Now the other half of this conversation is a drummer from a later era and, as you'll hear, a huge fan of Copeland's work. Jon Wurster is a renaissance man who's played most regularly with Superchunk, the Mountain Goats, and Bob Mould, but whose list of credits goes way beyond those amazing acts. He's also a comedy writer and half of the duo Scharpling and Wurster, which gave birth to some of the funniest characters in radio comedy ever. This summer, Wurster will tour with both Mountain Goats and Bob Mould, so chances are good that he'll be in a city near you. In this conversation, Wurster—as I had hoped he would—gets deep into specifics with Copeland, asking him right off the bat about a gig from the early 1980s. They also chat about how Copeland's orchestral tours actually work and about his forays into the soundtrack world—I had never heard the term “shit chord” before. They get into the fights that Copeland had with Police frontman Sting, and about how band therapy helped sort that all out. Wurster also gets a chance to ask about the lyrics to a deep cut called “On Any Other Day.” Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Jon Wurster and Stewart Copeland for chatting. If you liked what you heard, please follow Talkhouse on your favorite podcasting platform, and check out all the great stuff at Talkhouse.com. This episode was produced by Myron Kaplan, and the Talkhouse theme is composed and performed by the Range. See you next time!

Gregg Gethard (@FinancialGuruGG) takes us through his early days in comedy performing in backyards and dive bars and writing one man shows based on The Wire and the autobiography of Darryl Strawberry, who Gregg would later meet. We also get the full story of the infamous New York is Better Than Philly show that pitted Gregg vs. his brother Chris, including an ending involving the Milkshake of Death. Then, Gregg details his relationship with Tom Scharpling and The Best Show on WFMU, why Scharpling wouldn't do Chris' show unless Gregg was there and meeting Ilana Glazer shortly before Broad City.
Today we talked with Jon Wurster of Superchunk, The Best Show, Bob Mould Band, The Mountain Goats and many many more. We spent about an hour just talking about how he got to NC and his musical and comedic life. Definitely a great interview for fans of indie music and indie comedy. Phil goes negative in the intro about MLK day and rants on Jesse Helms. Shannon redeems it by an eloquent discussion of Rev. William Barber. Plus, stomach bug!

Jon Wurster first made his name as the drummer for Superchunk, and over the past twenty years, he's become of rock's most in-demand and versatile drummers. He's played with everyone from Bob Mould to Katy Perry, but his creative output isn't limited to music. Jon is one half of the acclaimed and bizarrely hilarious comedy duo Scharpling & Wurster. He talks to Joe about setting ambitious goals at a young age, the power of projecting your intentions into the universe, sobriety, and the relationship between comedy and music.

As a musician, Jon Wurster is best-known as the drummer for Superchunk, The Mountain Goats, New Pornographers and The Bob Mould Band. He’s also half of the comedy team Scharpling and Wurster. Tom Scharpling was the host of a radio show which originally aired on WFMU. Scharpling and Wurster struck up a friendship, and Wurster started regularly calling into Scharpling’s radio show, voicing different characters. The Best Show aired for 13 years, and an exhaustive collection of the show’s shenanigans featuring Wurster’s crazy personnas, has just been released as a box set. We talk to Wurster about his early days in the Philly punk scene in the 1980s, becoming a professional musician and coping with life on the road. Wurster also reveals the surprising inspiration for the voice of one of his most notorious Best Show characters, Philly Boy Roy. The “Best Show” box set by Jon Wurster and Tom Scharpling is now available at Amazon, and includes 16 CDs, a book and lots of bonus material. You can listen to new “The Best Show” as a webcast and podcast through TheBestShow.net

Tom Scharpling and Jon Wurster rarely analyze why their brand of two-man radio comedy is so potent. Today on the Gist, they pause to consider 13 years of hilariously weird phone calls from Newbridge, NJ. Their box set The Best of The Best Show is available from the Numero Group. It must be around 11PM by the time Tom Scharpling arrives at my apartment, and he’s predictably exhausted. We’d scheduled something for earlier in the evening, but he found himself sitting though four hours of traffic making his way into Queens, making the executive to skip directly to the live podcast he’s appearing on a ten minute ride away. He’s tired, but ready. This is his moment of triumphant, one of the final few podcast appearances on a victory lap before ending The Best Show’s year-long self-imposed hiatus, resurrecting the beloved public radio program as an internet-only concern. It’s a world the comedian has (somewhat) lovingly ribbed, but later this month, after a dozen-plus years as a terrestrial radio show, WFMU’s former tent pole program joins the ranks of standalone podcasts. Scharpling and indie rock drummer turned comedy partner Jon Wurster have spent the past year piecing together the infrastructure for a proper relaunch, taking a much needed break to pursue other avenues of expression and reflecting on the program’s strange and steady transformation from music-based radio program to one of the purest and most unique pieces of on-going comedy in the last 20 years. The intervening months have also seen a number of Best Show-related projects that have afforded further reflection, including the suitably off-kilter Adult Swim one-off The Newbridge Tourism Board Presents: “We’re Newbridge, We’re Comin’ To Get Ya!” and the forthcoming Scharpling and Wurster Numero Group boxset, which collects 79 of the duo’s best bits over a massive 16 CDs. Even after all that, I still managed to squeeze around an hour or so out of Scharpling to talk social media, success and Donald Sterling.

in January of 2010, two novice comedians - Andy and Mark - started Beginnings as a way to cut through the layers of mythos that surrounded having a career in entertainment. How does one *actually* have a career in comedy? What are the realities about getting into show business? Three years and 106 episodes later, Beginnings has shed its original intent and morphed into a Freudian talk show that examines where creative people come from and what their childhoods were like.On today's episode, Mark and Andy look back over the first 100 episodes and pick out some of their favorite moments with guests such as Daily Show-writer Elliott Kalan, Pete Holmes, Matt Besser, Ian Roberts, Tom Scharpling, Gabrielle Bell, Ethan Berlin (Totally Biased, Bunk), John Lee (Wonder Showzen), Devin Clark (Ugly Americans), Jesse Moynihan (Adventure Time), David Rees, and Jon Glaser. As Mark is also departing the show, it's also a chance to say good-bye to him and revel in melancholy!Check out our new website for Beginnings, subscribe on iTunes and see some live dates: Andy will be in conversation with J.J. Sedelmaier on July 30th at UCB East, and the next live episode will be August 6th with Ari Shaffir and more!

Over the last few years, the three have created a large number of funny and interesting music videos for acts such as The New Pornographers, Ted Leo, Ben Gibbard and Aimee Mann.Over the weekend, Rob and Puloma came over to the Wrestling Team apartment to get in deep about music (John Vanderslice, Midlake, Bob Mould, Husker Du, Parquet Courts and Palma Violets!), and chat about how Puloma used to run with Indian street musicians, Andy's childish palette, as well as Rob and Puloma's collaborations with Tom Scharpling. We close out Muriel Awards Week (I recently wrote a piece over at the official blog) here with a convo with Muriels voter Philip Tatler IV. We talk a lot about old and new movies, especially movies that Tatler, a Tennessee-based, reality-show film editor and cinephile, feels has some remarkable editing. We also discuss the sort of reality shows he has no choice but to edit. We close it out with Tatler and I sifting through Film Comment's Top 50 of last year and seeing which films we thought were Muriels-worthy. By the way, for all those Best Show on WFMU fans, we also talk about unfortunate-yet-sidesplitting moment when I called into the show and got "Bad Companyed" by none other than Tom Scharpling.
Ken Plume has another chat with writer Will Stegemann about, Billy Joel, epiphanies, Piano Ham, Oral support, Sal's IROQ, and floating.

Tom Scharpling is the host of the weekly-call in program The Best Show on WFMU. Tom is also one of the best straight men in comedy, and uses his skills in the duo Scharpling and Wurster. Recently Tom has begun to direct music videos for groups like Ted Leo and the Pharmacists and The New Pornographers, and on this episode of Field Guide we talk about the trailer he made for John Hodgman's new book. Tom Scharpling is the host of the critically-acclaimed weekly-call in program The Best Show on WFMU. Grounded by Tom's sardonic glee, the show features phone calls, comedians and a weekly call between Tom and his comedy partner Jon Wurster, where Wurster plays numerous characters, usually from the made-up town of Newbridge, NJ. Tom was also a writer and executive producer on USA's Monk, and most recently, he has been directing a number of well-received videos for everyone from The New Pornographers to John Hodgeman. A few weeks ago, we sat down with Tom in Studio C of WFMU hours before The Best Show. On this episode: we spend ten minutes accidentally depressing Tom! Tom becomes Andy's impromptu therapist! Andy downgrades his crippling fears! We maybe learn the origins of soda! And Tom challenges us to a game of Make Me Laugh!
Episode thirteen, our almost-anniversary, features Wrestling Team favorite Jon Wurster. When he's not drumming for Superchunk or A.C. Newman or The Mountain Goats or any other number of acts, he is one-half of the comedy duo Scharpling and Wurster. Along with producer and director Tom Scharpling, host of The Best Show on WFMU, the two create partly-scripted phone calls where Wurster plays different characters, from unabashed Philly fan Philly Boy Roy to geriatric Fonzie-inspiration The Gorch and hundreds more. Grounded by Scharpling's straight-man incredulity, the two have built up a vast fictional world centering around the made-up town of Newbridge, NJ. Jon sat down with us over Skype in mid-December to talk about Chris Elliott, SCTV, world-building, coming to comedy from being a professional musician and former MTV VJ Smash.
In our first ever seventh episode, we go on an adventure with Tom Scharpling (Best Show on WFMU, Monk) to the magical land of New Jersey! ; You will get to drive with us on New Jersey’s freeways, walk with us through New Jersey’s Princeton University campus, eat with us at New Jersey’s Ican’trememberthenameoftherestaurant and more!
