Are you in love with the jungle in this world?
This Friday in Brooklyn, New York, Cheap Trick, Chicago, Deep Purple, Steve Miller and N.W.A will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. We've been profiling the inductees. Today, it's Miller time. The singer and guitarist became eligible for election in 1993 and, like Chicago and Cheap Trick, was elected the first time he was nominated. He was aided by the fan ballot, where he got 25.5-million votes, placing him fifth behind Chicago, Yes, The Cars and Deep Purple. Miller was born in Milwaukee where his father was friends with Les Paul. The guitar innovator was very encouraging to Steve and gave him lessons. Miller began his professional career in Chicago, playing blues. He moved out to San Francisco and started to absorb the psychedelia that would lead him in a more pop-rock direction with songs like "Livin' in the U.S.A.," "Fly Like an Eagle," "Rock'n Me," "Take the Money and Run," "Jet Airliner" and "Jungle Love." His Greatest Hits 1974-78 is one of the best-selling albums of all-time. Miller is still writing, recording and touring. Miller says he hopes the outpouring of support for him and his fellow inductees this year makes the Rock Hall's nominating committee take notice.

In Minneapolis, the Peterson family musical dynasty goes back decades. Paul Peterson didn't even have to think about what he'd do with his life. In his late teens, he was pegged to join Morris Day and the Time for their Ice Cream Castles album which became their biggest and featured hits like "Jungle Love" and "The Bird". From there, Prince decided to build The Family, one of his many 80s side projects, around the voices of Paul and Susannah Melvoin. But, after one album The Family ended and Paul went solo. For over 30 years, Paul has been making his own music (new album Break On Free just came out) and working as an in demand hired gun for people like Steve Miller, Kenny Loggins, Oleta Adams and Donny Osmond. In addition to his excellent new album, Paul has a great podcast called Music on the Run about staying in shape on the road. It's a unique and fascinating story you have to hear! www.paulpeterson.com www.patreon.com/thehustlepod

AS A MEMBER OF THE LOCAL BAND FLYTE TYME, HIS KEYBOARDS PROVIDED A DRAMATIC BACKDROP FOR SUCH MINNEAPOLIS SUPERSTARS AS ALEXANDER O'NEAL AND CYNTHIA JOHNSON, THE DIVA VOICE WHO LOFTED LIPPS INC TO THE TOP OF THE CHARTS WITH “FUNKYTOWN” IN 1980. HIS TRACK RECORD AS A COMPOSER AND PRODUCER INCLUDES “THE PLEASURE PRINCIPLE”, ONE OF JANET JACKSON'S BREAKTHROUGH HITS FROM “CONTROL” IN 1986. Moir remains one of the core members of the Time, the band who played comedic and funky foils to Prince in “Purple Rain”, and the group now elevated to cult hero status in the new film, “Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back”. While still in college, Moir began playing with the outfit, which was retooled by Prince into the group fronted by Morris Day and featured another set of musical legends-in-the-making, bassist Terry Lewis and keyboard player Jimmy Jam. After releasing tow stellar records (their self-titled first album and What Time Is It?) and barnstorming the country as the opening act for Prince, they hit their commercial stride with “Ice Cream Castle”, the album which featured both of their Purple Rain singles, “Jungle Love” and “The Bird”. Even Prince was taken aback by the group's success. In 1986, he told a Detroit radio interviewer, “They were, to be perfectly honest, the only band I was afraid of. They were turning into, like, Godzilla.” Buoyed by their success, Jam and Lewis left the Time to concentrate on producing, guitarist Jesse Johnson and front man Morris Day also enjoyed solo success, and Moir struck out on his own as well. He became the man behind the scenes of such records as “If You Were Here Tonight” by Alexander O' Neal and Deniece Williams' Dove Award nominated CD, “From the Beginning”, which featured Moir's “All I need”. In the years since, Moir has divided his schedule between roadwork with The Time (a reunion album in 1990 called Pandemonium yielded another hit single in “Jerk Out”) and writing and production work with some of the most stellar names in R&B. To date, Moir has collaborated with Gladys Knight and the Pips, Junior, Thelma Houston, Deja, Mica Paris, St. Paul, Ruby Turner, Cheryl Lynn, Force MDs and Patti Austin. He has received tow platinum and seven gold record awards for his work. Years of forging hits for others convinced Moir to step out on his own into the limelight, and “This Side of Paradise” brims with the promise of the memorable compositions which have gone before. “Here”, he says, “I'm able to take a musical idea from conception all the way through to completion and express myself in ways I sometimes can't when writing for others. Also, being able to step outside of the box that the music industry likes to place around people is empowering.” Songwriting remains first and foremost for him. “Songs, especially personal ones, are a reflection of thoughts and emotions a person feels about his or her condition at a particular time. The process of translating those thoughts and emotions into a musical from has always fascinated me,” he muses. ___________________________ Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Prince featured the "Upper Room with Joe Kelley and Gi Dussault" on his official website www.npgmusicclub.com. This is the first radio show to have ever received that honor. "Joe Kelley Radio" has been on the radio airwaves since 1982. When you think of the word "time," what comes to mind? Days, hours, minutes, seconds? The title of a magazine you seldom see outside of your dentist's waiting room? Did the familiar strains of "Jungle Love" start playing in your head, bringing you that good, strong Minneapolis sound from Morris Day and the Time? (O-e-o-e-o, the song is a bop, as most things Prince wrote were. RIP to a real one.) Well, our boys Sid and Keith take on the concept of time in this week's Overlap Podcast, which is something relevant to everyone on God's green earth, regardless of what business you may find yourself in or what your title may be. It is a universally acknowledged truth that when someone asks another person "How are you doing," with a 99.76 percent response rate, their answer will be either "Good" or "Busy." (The remaining 0.24 percent is your Great Aunt Gladys, who simply says "Why do you care? You never come visit anyway" and then usually starts into some rant about why Spiro Agnew got a bum deal.) In a world that seems divided on almost every major issue, we all seem to agree that we're all incredibly busy all of the time, even though some of us appear often to be doing nothing at all (mainly Keith, to be honest). Rather than trying to find a DeLorean with a flux capacitor or hoping you hear the woosh of the Tardis to help you understand all this wibbly-wobbly timey-wimey stuff (or God forbid having to learn quantum mechanics or some weird experimental physics), our boys have got you covered with how to free yourself from the Bridle of Busy - simple, straight-forward time management. Finding a way to better effectively manage your time will pep up your steps and keep you from feeling overwhelmed by what seems like a plethora of professional pursuits that pop up every day. Now, we could, of course, just give you all of our tremendous tips here in the podcast notes for easy digestion and dissemination, but ... yeah, not gonna happen #NoSpoilers . So, to find out how to defeat the ticking clock of wasted time, you're going to want to take time to tune in and turn it up for this week's Overlap Podcast. (And to defeat the aforementioned Morris Day and The Time, you're going to need to figure out how to throw a musical group together, which would include bringing Apollonia out of retirement, and learn how to do a banger version of "Purple Rain" and ... well, write us and let us know how that goes for you.) Captain Dreamboat: Live at Yonder Festival, Mary Valley, 30 November 2019 Captain Dreamboat began as an idea, a nickname, and a tattoo. Singer Ofa Fanaika - whose other project C H U R C H was featured in episode 349 of Live Delay - played in reggae/dub band Chocolate Strings throughout the 2000s and always had a dream of forming a soul and R'n'B band out of jazz musicians. At some point she was given the nickname "Captain Dreamboat" and she tattooed the name on her arm as a commitment to one day get that other band together. A year later, in 2012, the dream came to life. Since then Captain Dreamboat has been a staple of West End's music community, and have played festivals including Jungle Love, Island Vibe and the Woodford Folk Festival. In 2014 they released the EP "Fallin' For You", which has been followed with a string of occasional singles since then. Recorded by Taine Josephson Mixed by Nathan Melvin-Tong This set was mixed by an audio production student from the Queensland University of Technology as part of their course. Show production, engineering and host: Scott Mercer Originally aired via Zed Digital, 7-8pm, 8 August, 2021

The Jensens + Luminescence: Live at Yonder Festival, Mary Valley, 29 November 2019 Singer/guitarist Joe White first began making music after returning from a year spent living in Uganda with his parents on a Christian mission. He met bass player Bodi Lowrie and guitarist/vocalist Nathan Kendall while in high school on the Sunshine Coast and together they played in various projects as teenagers. Moving to Brisbane to study music at the Queensland University of Technology, White met guitarist Jordan Aston and drummer Phillip Fabros. Together, the five formed The Jensens in 2013. Their name was allegedly the only one of pages and pages of ideas that all five members could agree on, taken from a brand of speaker seen at a local music shop. Soon realising they were getting more out of music by playing it than studying it, they dropped out of uni to put more time into the band. The Jensens' early style could be characterised as boisterous indie rock, and they became a live mainstay around Brisbane and eventually Australia, playing festivals such as Valley Fiesta, The Blurst of Times, Deadlam, Jungle Love, The Big Pineapple Festival, Grampians Music Festival and Splendour in the Grass. The Jensens released the EPs "Everybody Talks" in 2016 and "Sexless" in 2017 before their music took on a larger scope with the albums "Hyacinth Haze" in 2019 and "Hammer & Blush" in 2021. The band's influences expanded and Joe White's lyrics began incorporating themes of conflict between his religious upbringing and his adult identity as a queer man. Luminescence are a Brisbane string group formed in 2018, covering classical, contemporary and experimental genres. They are made up of Toukie Wood and Liz Young on violins, and Emma Hales and Anitah Kumar on cellos, with Kumar also serving as the group's creative director. They have played several arts events, including GOMA Up Late, Anywhere Festival, Jungle Love and the Brisbane Street Art Festival. For the recording of The Jensens' second album, "Hammer & Blush", Luminescence were brought onboard to write and record string parts, and the sessions went so well they were invited to join The Jensens onstage for their appearance at Yonder Festival in 2019, where Luminescence were also performing a collaboration with artist/designer Chris Mangos. Accompanied by saxophonist Joel Aspinall, The Jensens and Luminescence delivered a unique performance for the Yonder crowd that Live Delay was very fortunate to capture for posterity. Paul is joined by special guest Mateo Pallamary to discuss love and if there's a simple way to describe and define such a small word which has massive implications and meanings – especially if you can do it through songs and music or shamanism. KEY TAKEAWAYS We're all living our story, we can't change what's going on in the world outside of us but we can control how we interpret it and how we react to it and in the end the definition of awareness is being present and in the moment. Which matters most: time, love or money? They're all energy which can be manipulated and mastered through shamanism. Becoming vulnerable is a massive challenge because if you do that you may get judged or people may intentionally hurt you, but you have to realise that it's not you, they're projecting onto you. You can't have light without dark. You have to experience both of them in life to find the centre and, in fact, they enhance each other. BEST MOMENTS ‘True love, like the Sun's energy, is unconditional.' ‘The heart has a greater density of receptors than the brain.' ‘The essence of love is pure unconditional openness and giving.' ‘Following you heart is the path home.' C H U R C H Live at Yonder Festival, Mary Valley, 29 November 2019 C H U R C H is on ongoing improvisational collective with a cast of rotating members that sprung out of Brisbane's soul, funk and jazz scenes. Led by Ofa Fanaika from Captain Dreamboat and Chocolate Strings, C H U R C H started in February 2017 as a regular jam night at The Bearded Lady in West End. The band's music is largely improvised, with Fanaika encouraging audience members to take the stage if they're feeling the vibe. C H U R C H gained early notoriety when touring Guns N' Roses drummer Frank Ferrer sat in with the band for a session while in Brisbane on a world tour. Eventually C H U R C H moved their regular gig from The Bearded Lady down the street to the Rumpus Room, and have since played at larger venues and festivals, such as Island Vibe, Jungle Love and Earth Frequency. They've also featured special tribute nights playing the music of artists such as Prince and Nirvana. Jacquie Ramsey joins Britt and Betsy this week to tell her incredible story about being a contestant on the hit show, Survivor. Not only did Jacquie voluntarily give up the comforts of home to go live in an African jungle, eat bugs to stay alive, and form alliances… she also met her true love and now-husband (famed artist and producer Tyler Ramsey) while filming and their forbidden love affair led them to flee into the jungle for a few days while mercenaries and the heads of the TV network searched for them. We can’t make this sh*t up… THIS STORY DESERVES A MOVIE! In addition to being a wife and mom, Jacquie is also the creator and founder of The Fresh Test… a natural, much healthier and more delicious alternative to that horrible orange drink every pregnant mother loathes during their glucose test. Jacquie saw a need in the market and took her idea all the way to the top to becoming the ONLY alternative to that nasty, outdated liquid. Doctors and patients all over the country and now clamoring for this better, fresher way to test! We want to thank Jacquie for going on the loose with us! We also want to thank our listeners for your support! If you want to help us out, please leave us a 5-star review and follow us on Instagram and Facebook @themomsontheloose. Your Brain on Facts is a half-hour podcast of things you didn’t know, things you thought you knew, and things you never knew you never knew, covering topics as diverse as science-fiction, funerals, food origins, heroic animals, and the strategic butter reserve. Before she started the Your Brain On Facts podcast to safely vent the copious bonus facts in her brain, Moxie LaBouche performed and produced burlesque, specifically "nerd-lesque." It was her privilege to produce the only George R. R. Martin-approved burlesque tribute to Game of Thrones and even to play for the man himself. Moxie has presented a local TED talk, is the prolific author of unfinished fiction, knows seven words of Latin, and previously earned her living as a goat farmer and soap maker. She is also the creator and co-host of the Science With Savannah, Age 7 podcast and YouTube channel. Moxie lives in Virginia with her husband and a dozen or so pets. http://yourbrainonfacts.com/ TRANSCRIPT You might know Prince wrote Sinead O’Connor’s "Nothing Compares to You," but he also wrote Chaka Khan’s "I Feel For You," "Manic Monday" by The Bangles, "Jungle Love" by The Time, Sheila E’s "The Glamorous Life," Alicia Keys’ "How Come You Don’t Call Me," and a whole lot more.
U know songs like Sheila E's “The Glamourous Life” and The Time's “Gigolos Get Lonely Too.” Now, hear these songs as performed by “Jamie Starr” himself – Prince by a different name. Also includes Jungle Love, The Dance Electric and Sex Shooter.
Tykee and Tony discuss how they became brothers from another mothers. Whether he went by his official name Prince Rogers Nelson, The Artist Formerly Known as Prince, a symbol that represents both the male and female genders or just The Artist — we all know the man by Prince. Prince was an American singer, songwriter, musician, record producer, dancer, actor and filmmaker. He was a prolific writer and recorded so many songs that his fight with Warner Brothers lead them to put the breaks on his releases for fear of oversaturation. He often gave songs away for free under different pseudonyms like "Manic Monday" by the Bangles (Christoper), "Sugar Walls" by Sheena Easton (Alexander Nevermind), "Jungle Love" and "The Bird" by the Time (The Starr ★ Company). Also, his music was covered by other artists — most notably "I Feel For U" by Chaka Khan, "Nothing Compares 2 U" by Sinead O'Connor and even the John Cougar Mellencamp produced "When You Were Mine" by Mitch Ryder among many others. Prince also produced several acts like the Time (mentioned above), Sheila E (Glamourous Life) and Vanity 6 (Nasty Girl) as well as a host of others. Ultimately, Prince was one of a dozen artists that literally provided the soundtrack to the eighties. With musical styles that ranged from Funk, Rock, New Wave, Soul, Psychedelia, and pop, he was the considered the quintessential artist in that he drew his inspiration from people like David Bowie, James Brown, Sly & the Family Stone, Jimi Hendrix, George Clinton, Miles Davis among many others and it showed in his music and performances. In 1985, I was living in Austin, TX and working as a copy clerk for the Austin American Statesman and part-time for Hastings Records in the mall. We frequently received free tickets to concerts and Bruce Springsteen and Prince were playing within weeks apart from each other. I was a fan of both artists but there were only so many tickets to go around so I opted for the Prince tickets. These were for his Purple Rain tour and my best friend Dan and I went to the concert where he put on a 2-hour funk and rock extravaganza like we had never seen. His performance was a once in a lifetime experience and has stuck with as one of the most memorable I had ever attended. There is just way too much to cover about this man and his genius that hasn't already been written. The contributions that Prince has made to music, his guitar skills, his songwriting his production, his everything makes him one of the most admired if not influential artists of all time. While most of the tracks in this set stay fairly close to the originals — they are presented in their long form and re-edited for easy DJ mixing along with some notable modern-day remixes by Kue who did an outstanding job modernizing "Controversy" and "Purple Rain" for the dance floor. It is with much love and admiration for the man known as Prince that Party Favorz finally pays him his due respect with this tribute. RIP my friend. Prince also produced several acts like the Time (mentioned above), Sheila E (Glamourous Life), and Vanity 6 (Nasty Girl) as well as a host of others. Ultimately, Prince was one of a dozen artists that provided the soundtrack to the eighties. With musical styles that ranged from Funk, Rock, New Wave, Soul, Psychedelia, and pop, he was considered the quintessential artist in that he drew his inspiration from people like David Bowie, James Brown, Sly & the Family Stone, Jimi Hendrix, George Clinton, Miles Davis among many others and it showed in his music and performances. In 1985, I was living in Austin, TX, and working as a copy clerk for the Austin American Statesman and part-time for Hastings Records in the mall. We frequently received free tickets to concerts and Bruce Springsteen and Prince were playing weeks apart from each other. I was a fan of both artists but there were only so many tickets to go around so I opted for the Prince tickets. These were for his Purple Rain tour and my best friend Dan and I went to the concert where he put on a 2-hour funk and rock extravaganza as we had never seen. His performance was a once-in-a-lifetime experience and has stuck with me as one of the most memorable I had ever attended. There is just way too much to cover about this man and his genius that hasn't already been written. The contributions that Prince has made to music, his guitar skills, his songwriting his production, and his everything make him one of the most admired if not influential artists of all time. While most of the tracks in this set stay fairly close to the originals — they are presented in their long form and re-edited for easy DJ mixing along with some notable modern-day remixes by Kue who did an outstanding job ...

This week, we crawl over the finish line on our conversation about our favourite idiots. We fight valiantly but the heat gets the better of us. Alex tries to get us involved in a pyramid scheme, uttering the words "Man in the Coil", the bait and switches. David just wants protagonists to keep their personal belongings on them at all times. Gavin gets really excited to talk about a book. (He's just proud he can read) But wait! There's more. The heat has us tangent wildly, like being off-topic was somehow keeping us cool. Alex and Dave get into how highschool Music made them better liers and Gavin disappoints Alex with his complete lack of discipline. All in all, we made it to the other side completely different people. Enjoy. ;) You can follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram under Geek Theory Podcast. September 1977 — Meat Loaf — “Bat Out of Hell” Is it Opera? Is it Rock? Is it toxic masculinity - or maybe adolescent half-formed not-too-deep masculinity? From the beginning, Bat Out Of Hell has been hard to define, and it took a long time for Meat Loaf, composer Jim Steinman, and producer Todd Rundgren to get the concept album picked up. However, the staying power of this evergreen album is undeniable, with over 43 million sold to date, and 200,000 albums sold per year even today. If you found that overwhelming, well, you took the words right out of my mouth! We hope you enjoy our journey into the depths of this so-uncool-its-cool debut studio album. “Bat Out of Hell” This opening title track comes in at an epic 9:52 run time, and it is not the only long track. This album is great to hear as a whole. Todd Rundgren does the “motorcycle guitar solo” you’ll hear. Meat Loaf certainly has a distinctive, almost operatic voice. “Two Out of Three Ain't Bad” Meat Loaf got his start in theater, and this pop hit single gives credence to his theatrical influence. Meat Loaf won a lot of fans for his role as Eddie in “The Rocky Horror Picture Show.” Several tracks off this album were made into videos, which helped drive the popularity of the album. “Paradise By the Dashboard Light” This track is a cheeky take on parking make-out sessions. There is a Rocky Horror feel to this almost comedic multi-movement work. The song is filled with double entendres, plot twists, and a Phil Rizzuto baseball sequence. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK: “Theme from CHiPs” This cop show debuting in 1977 launched Erik Estrada's career STAFF PICKS: “In the City” by The Jam Wayne highlights a British punk band, reminiscent of the Kinks and the Who. While they made a big splash in the UK, they never took off in the States. “Cat Scratch Fever” by Ted Nugent Brian shares a pick from the Motor City Madman is easy to identify from the screaming guitar intro. Nugent often took the stage wearing only a loincloth back in the day. “We Just Disagree” by Dave Mason Rob's staff pick takes a more mellow direction with the second single released off Mason's album. Great harmonies and a 12-string guitar make this Traffic alum's hit memorable. “Jungle Love” by the Steve Miller Band This hit off the tenth studio release from Steve Miller only took only 30 minutes to complete on the last day of recording, says Bruce. "You treat me like I was your ocean - you swim in my blood when it's warm." LAUGH TRACK: “Grandmother’s Song” by Steve Martin Steve Martin's comedy takes us out on this week's podcast.

Imzadi. Will Riker and Deanna Troi: throughout the run of Star Trek: The Next Generation, it was clear there was a deep connection between these two characters. However, they never truly "got together" until 2002's Star Trek Nemesis. What is the history between Will and Deanna? What drew them together and made them "Imzadi"? At last we look at the story that tells the tale of TNG's greatest romance! In this episode of Literary Treks, hosts Dan Gunther and Bruce Gibson are joined by Amy Nelson of Earl Grey and The Edge to talk about Imzadi by Peter David. We discuss how we first read Imzadi, Riker's life without Deanna, Will's behavior as a young man, how Will and Deanna first got together, the Guardian of Forever, temporal shenanigans, and wrap up with our final thoughts and ratings.
