It's our first-ever Trans Canada Christmas - starring the Trans Canada Highwaymen. Steven Page - BNLadies and Steven Page Trio Moe Berg - Pursuit of Happiness Craig Northey - Odds and Steven Page Trio Chris Murphy - Sloan They are great friends, each with his band and career. What they have in common is a sense of the music they grew up with and a welcome sense of humour. These Christmas sessions began in the '70s at CBC Vancouver with Producer Susan Englebert: Shari Ulrich, Valdy, Terry Frewer, Roy Forbes, and several guests. 5-6 years of gathering around a series of microphones, playing Christmas songs and telling Christmas stories. Such fun. Sadly, we lost our friend Susan to cancer and the Christmas show to time itself. The concept returned at Roundhouse Radio in Vancouver in 2015 and we enjoyed three years of Christmas in the Round with Barney Bentall and his assorted friends. We've played all three years on past Christmas Stews. Now comes CKUA's turn to host the same tradition. Each Highwayman brings a Christmas song and stories of past Christmas tales. 5 songs in total. Craig Northey's was co-written with Brent Butt of Corner Gas. Steven's is about cheese logs. Chris's is about kids coming home and Moe's is the Christmas Classic Mistletoe and Holly. They finish with Do they know it's Christmas. Thank you to Arianne, Duke, Jasmine, and Bren for their production skills in bringing this show to air. Amazing work. And to Corey Wood for his skills and friendship in the edit and graphic studio here on Vancouver Island.

Today on Eyewitness History I have the privilege of sharing an interview with Comedian, Writer, Director, Producer and the creator of my favorite Sitcom, Brent Butt! In addition to creating "Corner Gas" which is the number one Canadian Sitcom in history, he continues to produce content that has uncharacteristic staying power and an international audience. This has uniquely positioned him to understand the role of entertainment in culture as well as the responsibility (and whether or not there really is one) for those who have large platforms. This was a great conversation that entertains and informs while motivating you to stream another episode of "Corner Gas." On the Saturday December 23, 2023 edition of the Richard Crouse Show we have look at some of the greatest Christmas songs of all time. First we meet Moe Berg, one forth of the Trans-Canada Highwaymen, a new band that consists of four of this country's best rock singer-songwriters, Sloan's Chris Murphy, Odds' Craig Nothey and former Barenaked Ladies frontman Steven Page. The album, “Explosive Hits Vol. 1,” is covers of Canadian AM rock radio hits from the 1960s and 70's and it's super fun. Moe Berg and I talk about the new album, and then get into the spirit of the season as Moe talks about a Christmas song he wrote with the Pursuit of Happiness and a tune he loves so much, he has a plaque with the lyrics. “Furious Devotion” author Richard Balls joins me to talk about “Fairytale of New York,” a song that is an Irish folk-style ballad and was written as a duet, with the Pogues' singer Shane MacGowan and Kristy MacColl as bickering former lovers on Christmas Eve. A song about their youthful hopes crushed by alcohol and drug addiction doesn't sound like a Christmas cracker, but in the UK it was the most-played Christmas song of the 21st century and re-enters the music charts every December. We'll also get to know Larry Weinstein, director of the documentary “Dreaming of a Jewish Christmas,” a musical documentary about the amazing story of a group of Jewish songwriters who wrote the soundtrack to Christmas, and we'll learn how the Cuban Missile Crisis inspired one of the most popular Christmas songs of all time. Finally we wrap with Brent Butt, the star, writer and/or producer of TV shows such as “Corner Gas,” “Hiccups” and “Corner Gas Animated,” and the author of the best-selling thriller “Huge,” and home designer, television host and producer, best-selling author, sought-after public speaker, and host of her own special Tuscan getaways Debbie Travis on their favorite Christmas songs and stories.

On the Saturday November 25, 2023 edition of the Richard Crouse Show we meet two Canadian legends. First up is stand-up comedian Brent Butt, the star, writer and/or producer of TV shows such as “Corner Gas,” “Hiccups” and “Corner Gas Animated.” He recently added a new line to his resume, thriller author. His debut novel is “Huge,” and it is indeed a huge bestseller. Set in 1994, the darkly comedic psychological thriller follows a trio of comics on a tour put together by a shady Winnipeg-based comedy booker, through small-town Manitoba and Ontario. The situation goes from bad to worse to downright frightening and violent as they try and get off the road in one piece. Then, we'll meet Canada's sharpest and funniest political satirist, Rick Mercer. His latest project is a book titled “The Road Years: A Memoir, Continued…” It's a look at the his wildly popular show The Mercer Report, it's beginnings, it's end and everything in between, including Every living prime minister. Rock and roll royalty from Rush to Randy Bachman. Olympians and Paralympians. A skinny-dipping Bob Rae. And Jann Arden, of course, who gets a chapter to herself.

This was a bucket list type interview for me and I think it shows. I did my best to keep my cool but a certain element of fandom comes through. From BrentButt.com: Brent Butt has long been considered one of the funniest people in Canada, with a career in stand-up comedy that stretches into five decades, including numerous appearances at major festivals in multiple countries and being voted Best Male Stand-Up in Canada by his peers in the profession. He also created and starred in two successful sitcoms – CORNER GAS and HICCUPS. When you add in two theatrical comedy films (NO CLUE, CORNER GAS: THE MOVIE) and four seasons of an animated TV spinoff, it may seem surprising that Brent's new venture has taken a rather dark turn. THE DARK TURN… Brent has written his debut novel – an intense, gritty psychological thriller called HUGE (from Doubleday Canada – Oct. 2023). The story follows three comedians on a rough run of shows through a remote stretch of rural countryside, as their priorities shift from getting laughs to fighting for their lives. October 11, 2023 - In this episode, our time machine welcomes aboard Brent Butt, who those of you in the Great White North know as the creator and star of the sitcom "Corner Gas," so beloved by Canadians that it has spawned an animated version and a movie. He's also host of the Butt Pod, which — since you probably have your phone out right now — I suggest you swipe over and subscribe to for some really insightful interviews. Brent Butt puts his talents to work on the thriller genre in "Huge: A Novel." The story hits the circuit of nameless clubs in Western Canda where two comedians — one, a veteran in the business from America; the other, a lady newcomer from Ireland — meet the aspiring headliner who'll change their lives, and perhaps end them. You can read more at HugeTheNovel.com and — speaking of our guest always growing, refusing to be pigeonholed by one genre — these days, Brent Butt is transitioning to publishing more content on Substack as he transitions away from @BrentButt on Twitter.

There are likely very few people from Tisdale, Saskatchewan who have thrown out the first pitch at Wrigley Field or performed for Queen Elizabeth. Brent Butt has done both. In this episode of The Digging Deep Podcast, the writer, actor, and performer best known for his hit TV show Corner Gas talks about growing up the youngest of seven kids, his semi-competitive arm wrestling career, and how he pursued the only job he ever wanted. Through it all, he holds onto the belief that you don't learn from success, and that you have to stumble, fall, and take some punches along the way. Brent also talks about his next venture – a novel that he says is not what people will be expecting from him. We learn why stubbing your toe is worse than being punched in the face, why The Catcher in the Rye is actually a comedy, and that life is gonna kick you in the teeth no matter what, so you might as well take the beating in pursuit of your dream. You would be hard-pressed to find a more impressive cross-border comedy resume than that of writer-producer Tim McAuliffe. The Montreal native's list of credits includes The Office, The Last Man on Earth, Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, MacGruber, This Hour Has 22 Minutes and Corner Gas.His latest production is co-creating Son of a Critch, which is already off to an impressive start on CBC. The Tuesday night sitcom stars Mark Critch and is based on his memoir about growing up in Newfoundland. McAuliffe and Critch first met as writers 16 years ago on 22 Minutes. After Critch wrote his book, McAuliffe said that is a TV show, and the two made it so.McAuliffe did not set out to write for the likes of Critch, Will Forte, Jimmy Fallon, Brent Butt or Steve Carell. He was working in advertising when a video he made in an effort to unload his clunky '88 Dodge Aires went viral. Soon he was helping to launch Video on Trial and other shows for MuchMusic.Without an agent or a manager (or a Green Card) he managed to land a job writing for Fallon. It all started when he dropped off a package full of jokes at the 30 Rock reception desk in Manhattan. The rest of that story is one of the great eye openers of a fun conversation. Listen to it now at Brioux.tv the podcast.

Incredibly talented comedian, writer, actor and hero Brent Butt returns to discuss underrated movies, dog goofs and his upcoming 90's psychological thriller!
Even though Brent Butt grew up in rural Saskatchewan, his path to comedy is similar to American comics, except it was exclusively Canadian. He was a directionless youth who was taken in by comedy on Canadian TV, he booked gigs throughout the Canadian countryside to hone his act, he dealt with monopolistic club owners and did sets in lousy environments like curling rinks. It all led to him being the first native Canadian with a #1 comedy series in Canada, Corner Gas, which was turned into a hit movie and now a cartoon. Brent tells Marc about his journey, and why he has no regrets that he remains fairly anonymous in America. This episode is sponsored by Turo.
