On the Saturday December 23, 2023 edition of the Richard Crouse Show we have look at some of the greatest Christmas songs of all time. First we meet Moe Berg, one forth of the Trans-Canada Highwaymen, a new band that consists of four of this country's best rock singer-songwriters,  Sloan's Chris Murphy, Odds' Craig Nothey and former Barenaked Ladies frontman Steven Page.  The album, “Explosive Hits Vol. 1,” is covers of Canadian AM rock radio hits from the 1960s and 70's and it's super fun. Moe Berg and I talk about the new album, and then get into the spirit of the season as Moe talks about a Christmas song he wrote with the Pursuit of Happiness and a tune he loves so much, he has a plaque with the lyrics. “Furious Devotion” author Richard Balls joins me to talk about “Fairytale of New York,”  a song that is an Irish folk-style ballad and was written as a duet, with the Pogues' singer Shane MacGowan and Kristy MacColl as bickering former lovers on Christmas Eve. A song about their youthful hopes crushed by alcohol and drug addiction doesn't sound like a Christmas cracker, but in the UK it was the most-played Christmas song of the 21st century and re-enters the music charts every December. We'll also get to know Larry Weinstein, director of the documentary “Dreaming of a Jewish Christmas,” a musical documentary about the amazing story of a group of Jewish songwriters who wrote the soundtrack to Christmas, and we'll learn how the Cuban Missile Crisis inspired one of the most popular Christmas songs of all time. Finally we wrap with Brent Butt, the star, writer and/or producer of TV shows such as “Corner Gas,” “Hiccups” and “Corner Gas Animated,” and the author of the best-selling thriller “Huge,” and home designer, television host and producer, best-selling author, sought-after public speaker, and host of her own special Tuscan getaways Debbie Travis on their favorite Christmas songs and stories.

Seventeen years ago, Brent Butt was a 30-something stand-up comedian with an idea for a TV show about the zany residents of a prairie town named Dog River located 40 km from nowhere. Brent was admittedly surprised when his show idea – ultimately titled Corner Gas – was picked up by CTV, and downright shocked when it became a hit. Corner Gas is one of Canada's highest-rated comedy brands of all-time, spawning a live action series, a movie, an animated series, two chart-topping books, sold-out comedy tours, a successful line of merchandise, a top-selling series of DVDs, a theme song, a holiday single, and a thriving tourist industry in Rouleau, Saskatchewan, where the live-action sitcom and movie were filmed on location. But all good things must come to an end, even for the residents of Dog River and the viewers who love them. On July 5, the fourth and final season of Corner Gas Animated kicked off on CTV Comedy. On the eve of the premiere, four of the stars of Corner Gas – Brent Butt, Lorne Cardinal, Nancy Robertson, and Tara Spencer-Nairn – visited the YVR Screen Scene Podcast to talk about their time in Dog River, how they reacted to learning that Corner Gas was a big hit, what happened when a certain Canadian Prime Minister made a cameo on the show, and whether it's really the end. The creator, writer, executive producer and star of Corner Gas Animated returns to brioux.tv:the podcast to set up the fourth and final season of his series. The spin-off from the live-action version of Corner Gas is the No. 1 Canadian original on CTV Comedy. So why is this the fourth and final season?  Butt, who has been making TV shows for CTV since 2004, comes up with what he thinks is the answer. He also talks about getting back on the road after his standup comedy act has been shut down for a year-and-a-half due to the pandemic (a tour starts in Ontario this fall). What did he do with his time off the road? Write a book of course. Not the book you'd think he'd write, either.  As for Season Four, several guest star voices are featured, including Mark McKinney in the opener as well as Kim Coates, Simu Liu, Rick Mercer, and former Barenaked Ladies frontman Steven Page. There's even a surprise Hollywood superstar who recorded a voice for the final episode. Who? Butt drops a hint or two but we'll have to wait to find out. The new season of Corner Gas Animated premieres Monday, July 5 on CTV Comedy.

You'd be forgiven for not associating Brent Butt with Vancouver, and instead picturing him behind the counter of a gas station in Dog River, Saskatchewan, AKA the setting for Corner Gas, the iconic comedy series turned movie turned animated series. But the road to Dog River includes some significant stops in Vancouver, and Brent remains a mainstay of the Vancouver film and television scene. In this special episode of the YVR Screen Scene Podcast, Brent reflects on lessons learned from stand-up and growing up in a small town, his lifelong passion for comic books, why the animation realm is a good fit for Corner Gas, what to expect from Corner Gas Animated's third season, and how he responds to people who criticize the show's diverse characters. Also: what Brent says about raw cauliflower that leaves Sabrina flabbergasted! Episode sponsor: UBCP/ACTRA

Vincent Tong is one of the hardest working humans in the Vancouver screen scene – so hard working that, a couple of years ago, he was nominated for three separate performances at the UBCP/ACTRA Awards in the voice acting category. He's voiced all manner of beasts and animals and aliens and humanoids and inanimate objects on shows like My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu, Mega Man Fully Charged, Bob the Builder, Slugterra, Corner Gas Animated, multiple Barbie movies, and Nerds and Monsters, and he's also a musical theatre geek who has lived out his Broadway dreams in shows like Footloose, Mamma Mia, The Lord of the Rings, and in a wildly popular stint as Le Fou in the Arts Club's 2017 production of Disney's Beauty and the Beast. In this rousing episode of the YVR Screen Scene Podcast, Vincent talks about #cartoonlife, on-screen representation, how he finds his voices, and his enduring love for Bronies. Peter Kelamis is a comedy legend, a voice actor, and a dramatic actor who slays in sci-fi roles. His voice can be heard all over some of the biggest cartoon hits of the last two decades, including My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, Beat Bugs, multiple Barbie movies, and Dragon Ball Z. He brought a searing, sneering intensity to his character the Man in the Yellow Jacket on Freeform's sci-fi series Beyond, and infused Adam Brody, the character he played on Stargate Universe, with humanity and wit. His recent work includes The Man in the High Castle, GLOW, When Calls the Heart, Corner Gas Animated – and he somehow finds time to attend anime and Stargate conventions and host the final night of the Leo Awards, AKA the toughest room in town, year after year. Peter kicks off the second season of the YVR Screen Scene Podcast by joining Sabrina Furminger for a hilarious and fascinating interview that touches on stand-up comedy, sci-fi, immigrant parents, and the anatomy of funny.

Veena Sood comes from a culture where girls are told to keep quiet. But Veena has a big voice, and she chooses to use it to teach, to perform, and to inspire, both as an improviser and as an in-demand actress. Over the course of her illustrious career, Veena has played comedic and dramatic roles in feature films like The Accused, Anne Wheeler's Loyalties, and Welcome to Marwen, television shows like Ghost Wars, The Indian Detective, and Corner Gas Animated, and web series like Yoga Town. In recent years, Veena has been recognized for her craft by her community: with UBCP/ACTRA's Sam Payne Award in 2014, the Lorena Gale Woman of Distinction Award in 2017, and a 2018 Leo Award nomination for Best Performance in a Music, Comedy, or Variety Program or Series for playing the principal of a school that's hired a robot to teach a kindergarten class in Android Employed.
