Who knew that Ki , as it is related to the Japanese martial art Aikido, would make into a Cider Chat! It all began when four words "Bravey, Wisdom, Love and Friendship" were spoken at New York Apple Camp in the summer of 2023. Apple Historian, author and well known apple dectective John Bunker was the key note speaker at camp who also happened to have a book all about Aikido. He had found those four inspiring words in a book titled "The Art of Peace'. The book was written by Morihei Ueshiba, the Founder of Aikido, and was translated into English by John Stevens who was a student of the Founder. The Founder , or Ōsensei as he was lovingly spoken often of Ki and its power. In short it is a universal life force that is present in all of us and all living things, including apple trees, orchards and cider. Michael Fairbrother started Moonlight Meadery in 2010 to bring ultra-premium meads and ciders to the market. He previously worked at Fairbrother Software Consulting LLC as a Co-founder and CTO and was the President of Brew Free or Die, New Hampshire's first homebrew club. Sr. Director of Demand Generation at Workhuman, Jill Crawford, joins Mike Wood on WorkHuman Radio for this week’s episode of Humans of Workhuman. They chat about company culture, her Frenchies and homebrewing. Jill’s Tenure at WorkhumanJill joined the company almost two years ago after responding to a job post for Director of Global Programs on LinkedIn. She felt that she could do the job and interviewed for the position. She was even more impressed with the company since a friend who worked there only had good things to say. When she was subsequently hired, she fit right in and fell in love with the company culture right away. Take Care of YourselfMike tells Jill that he admires her sense of humor, because just like him, she cracks a joke whenever there is tension in the room. Jill agrees that humor is needed and how great it is that their company advocates bringing your whole self to work. The official company policy is to take care of yourself: do what is best for yourself and your family. Both Mike and Jill share stories of how their managers insisted that they take care of themselves during difficult family situations. They felt supported and cared for by the company in those stressful times, and Mike can’t wait to get back to work. Fun With FrenchiesMike asks Jill about her French bulldogs. She shares funny stories about their antics and many ailments. She agrees with John Mulaney of SNL that having a Frenchie is like having a toddler that’s in your grandmother’s body. Her dogs are her children: she tells Mike about celebrating Fugsy’s 4th birthday party and having movie nights with her husband and their 4 dogs. An Award-Winning HomebrewerMike congratulates Jill on brewing this year’s Workhuman beer. He asks her about her homebrewing hobby. Jill is President of New Hampshire’s oldest homebrew club, Brew Free or Die. She relates the fun they have brewing, going on field trips and hosting competitions. She and her husband even constructed a replica of Old Man in the Mountain and added a mechanical arm so that he appears to be sipping a homebrew. Jill is also an award-winning homebrewer. She Brew is a competition for female amateur brewers. She entered with her own recipe 11 years ago, and won the category. She continues to enter each year, and continues to refine her recipe each time. WorkHuman LiveMike reminds listeners to join them at WorkHuman Live next May. Salubrious salutations to you, dear listener! We've talked enough about it, so now it's time to dive in... to the very first episode of... The Food Court of Nerds! (Or FCON, for short) In this, the inaugural episode, we discuss the impossibility of Impossible Foods making an Impossible Steak (egads!) A local New England chain becoming bigger (oh my!) And Oreo's improbably stuf new cookie (gadzooks!) Introducing our very first very special guest: 21st Amendment Brewing's co-founder and Brewmaster Shaun O'Sullivan! Wherein we discuss his favorite beers, 21st Amendment's brewing philosophy... and plane-watching! This month's Beer: 21st Amendment Brewing's Brew Free or Die IPA And of course, the Pièce De Résistance... This month's Recipe! Courtesy of Jon: Pepper's Spicy Clams (and Pasta) by Chrissy Teigen Ingredients: Kosher Salt 12 ounces dried linguine 1 stick (4 ounces) unsalted butter 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 8 cloves of garlic, minced (Jon says: "More like 24 full cloves) 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes 1/2 cup dry white wine 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 2 pounds Manila clams, scrubbed 1/2 cup chopped fresh parsley, (plus garnish, if you'd like) Directions: 1. First, cook the linguine al dente, keeping about 1/4 cup of the pasta water. Drain the pasta, then return to the pot. 2. Heat the butter + olive oil in a large skillet (medium heat) 3. When the butter begins foaming, toss in that gaggle of garlic + red pepper flakes. Cook until the garlic is fragrant and golden in color (don't burn it!) -- should take about 2 minutes. 4. Add the white wine and pepper -- cook until it all starts bubbling. 5. Add in the clams, increase the heat, and cover. You'll cook until the clams open (should take about 3 minutes). 6. Take those bad boys and dump 'em into the pasta pot - ditching the few that don't open. Cook it all for another few minutes. Add salt to taste. 7. Throw all of the remaining clam juice and pasta water in, warming on medium heat. 8. Dump the parsley in... mix a bit, and you're done! Make sure you like, subscribe, rate, review, tweet, or Facebook at us as you wish! Got a recipe suggestion? Link us, son!
