Tom Salinsky (Best Pick podcast) and Rob Miller (Creative Industry Insight podcast) join Flixwatcher to review Tom's choice Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio. Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio is a 2022 stop-motion animated musical fantasy, directed by Guillermo del Toro and Mark Gustafson. Loosely based on the 1883 Italian novel The Adventures of Pinocchio by Carlo Collodi, this version reimagines the story of Pinocchio, set in fascist Italy between World War I and II. It won the 2023 Oscar for Best Animated Feature. Geppetto (David Bradley) is a woodcarver who tragically loses his beloved son Carlo, who is killed during a bombing raid. He carves a wooden boy which The Wood Sprite (Tilda Swinton) brings to life and assigns Sebastian J. Cricket (Ewan McGregor) to teach and guide him. Geppetto is initially terrified by Pinocchio and then frustrated by his antics and is forced to send him to school. But on the way he is tricked by Count Volpe (Christoph Waltz) and his monkey Spazzatura (Cate Blanchett) and ends up in their circus. Not surprising then that Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio shares many visuals and themes found in his other works like The Devils Backbone or Pan's Labyrinth. The stop-motion is unbelievably detailed and clearly a labour of love. Scores for recommendability were mixed, Pinocchio looks beautiful but some of the songs don't land and it is on occasion too terrifying and sad to be a children's film, however it still manages to score a very respectable 3.33 overall. Director Guillermo del Toro has a strong as hell track record of consistently amazing films including the likes of Pan's Labyrinth, The Shape of Water, and Hellboy. His latest is a shadow-soaked film noir about a man who goes from grifter to lauded psychic medium. Drama ensures. Bradley Cooper leads an all star cast. It was a controversial subject a few years ago but the stigma of "selling out" to a macro brewery has mostly subsided.Head Retention spoke with Devils Backbone COO, Hayes Humphreys just after their acquisition by AB InBev in 2016 and he's back to give Roche and Lashelle an update on what life is like for a craft brewery that has been bought by one of the big boys.Hayes discusses the (mostly) positives that have come from being part of the Anheuser-Busch umbrella including the better (and safer) working conditions for DB employees, the increase in charitable work by Devils Backbone, and more.

“Some of the things that continue to draw me back to the outdoors are the connections I make with others, which tend to be richer when I'm connecting with them outside. The connections I make with myself tend to be more introspective and fuller when I'm outside, and the spiritual connections I have with nature are things my eyes are significantly more open to when I'm lacking the distractions of the front country.” -Kristen Musselman, Chief Hiking OfficerImagine your outdoor dream job.
Back for a third time this week, and I'm talking ghost stories, but very much like The Devils Backbone, there's a mystery to solve along the way. Certainly more Supernatural Thriller then horror, but not in a The Conjuring type way. However in a very Conjuring 2 / Annabell Creation way, this film has great performances by the two young girls (Kiera Thompson & Sienna Sayer) as both the ghost and the daughter solving the mystery.Hat's off to Ruth Platt for a having a really interesting and original ending - I didn't see it coming, but then I'm thick. Don't worry though, its not spoiled, so go watch the movie first, then come back here and listen to the show.If you enjoyed the show please leave a review here, it helps us grow.Podchaser - https://www.podchaser.com/podcasts/kids-what-are-we-watching-toni-1324747You can also find us in the following places. It's a new month and that means a new LIMITED series on TCR. For the month of August the Nobodies are dipping into the wonderful wide world of International horror films in a series titled RANT Around the World. They kick off this trip around the globe with a little film by visionary director Guillermo del Toro, The Devil's Backbone. Meanwhile Jacinto, a young man raised at the home since he was a boy, has his eyes set on a stash of secret gold, and will stop at nothing to get it. This is modern gothic horror told only the way del Toro can. Also, Horror Hornshoe Headlines, and Rants Recommends. Plus next's week's title revealed.

On our first official Cinco De Mayo episode we're talking about The Devil's Backbone. It's the super happy tale of a young man who's parents are killed in the Spanish Civil War and he gets sent to an orphanage where he encounters a ghost child who was brutally murdered by a guy who looks a lot like Eli Roth. We've reinvented the concept of Christmas presents this year. Instead of handing out actual tangible gifts, Tanavi, Dave and Richard – aka the Robby The Robot's Waiting podcast team – have each chosen a favourite movie or TV show for the other two to watch. The only rule is that they can't have seen it before. Following Dave's pick of Hawk The Slayer, Richard has gone for early Guillermo del Toro masterpiece The Devil's Backbone, a Spanish Civil War-set story about a haunting in an orphanage. And an unexploded bomb. We've also invited along Den Of Geek UK editor (and horror expert) Rosie Fletcher to help us discuss a kids' adventure movie with a very dark edge. It’s Guillermo del Toro week. Tuyet and Robin are summoning spirits—namely the super vengeful one in 2001’s The Devil’s Backbone—with writer Pilar Duralde. The crew talk out dark secrets, young allies, and how disappointing it is when hot guys turn out to be so, so evil. Sigh.
