This is a good episode! I recently had the chance to chat with Pope & Young Club's past President, Jim Willems. Jim is an outstanding traditional bowhunter whose passion for bowhunting takes him far and wide. He's taken numerous world-class animals with his recurve and speaks eloquently about taking back the word "trophy hunter". That discussion alone, and hearing his take on hunting big bucks and bulls, is enough to make this episode great, but then we get to talking about ways that folks can access hunting opportunities around them. It is one thing to pick up a new bow and get geared up and proficient with arrow accuracy, and then it's a whole other thing to actually get out hunting. Hopefully, this episode helps you with that. Welcome to the Traditional Bowhunter's Journey...brought to you in cooperation with the Traditional Bowhunter Magazine. This episode is also brought to you by the fine folks over at Novem Archery. I am shooting one of their finger tabs right now, and I like it a lot. Something new! We've launched a YouTube channel... "John Schneider's Wild Life". Opening the episode with Evan explaining his violent cartoons, his story of experimenting with batches of cumbers, and his multiple stays in "The Cage". At the age of 21, Evan has experienced more than most grown adults. Austin asks Evan a few questions as the "Young Club" about roast battles, making fun of others, being authentic and being able to get people to laugh at the darkness. Evan gets passionate about his addictions, from reptiles to magic, he gets overly obsessed. Evan explains his feelings about magic, how it teaches you to not believe everything you see, and how a good joke on stage, is comparable to a good magic trick at the mall. After a dive into Evan's sad suicide attempts, (carrying the bullet that didn't fire, filling pockets full of rocks, and tacking a tack to his wrist) Austin and Evan talk about the difference between a bit and a lie and the only time Austin thinks lying is acceptable. Evan tells us about the difficulty his mom went through trying to raise such a rebel and the group talks about some very violent things. Guests on the show are encouraged to be genuine, while no subject is off the table. It is a judgment free space to talk about those subjects that aren't normally discussed in everyday life. Guests open up about those stories and personal experiences that maybe they haven't shared before or would like to get off their chest. The goal is to be unrestricted and transparent.

An Alberta bowhunter named Shawn O'Shea killed an incredible 449 4/8-inch non-typical bull in September 2020. Even though that bull is an all-time world record, the story of the hunt went mostly untold until the Pope & Young Club unceremoniously posted about it in late March. In this episode, Hunting Editor Andrew McKean tells the story of O'Shea's hunt and explains why the modest bowhunter ultimately decided to get the bull scored and entered into the record books. Whoa! Hold on boys and girls of the hunting scene, this is going to be a HOT TOPIC!! On this episode of the Ryan Furrer Podcast I'm joined by past President and current Board Member Jim Willems from Pope and Young. The main topic of discussion was the highly debated issue of the modern day Crossbow. Yes! There I said it- we're actually sitting down having a discussion about crossbows and if they have a place in the actual bow season. Let's be honest if you're a bowhunter the advancements in crossbow technology in the last few years really has to leave you scratching your head. Just the other day I saw a crossbow ad where their marketing read "Meet your next rifle!" HA! So why not sit down with one of the top guys at Pope and Young. I mean P&Y is the organization that is actually responsible for us as bowhunters having an actual bow season in the first place, so I would think their opinion would be valid.I've said it before, and I'll say it again. I'm personally not anti-crossbow, I am however starting to question how far this is actually going to go. Where does it end? So this isn't a crossbow bashing podcast, It's a discussion that more hunters should be having. Hopefully from this episode they do. If you don't stand up for something, you'll fall for anything. We said it in the podcast- speak up, become heard, get involved with Pope and Young, or your State Bowhunting Organization. As the great Fred Bear said, "If you're not working to protect bowhunting, you're working to destroy it" Please, as always have a listen and feel free to share your comments or questions.

Dennis Dunn joins the show to discuss his 40 years of hunting experience.  We also cover predator management, the politics of hunting, and porcupine love making.   Read Dennis’s bio below and be sure to check out his webpage (http://barebows.com/) Born in Seattle in May of 1940, Dennis Dunn went on to graduate cum laude from Harvard University in 1962, with a B.A. degree and a major in Romance Languages and Literature. He became a middle and senior high school French language teacher, and during this period he earned a Masters Degree in Romance Languages from the University of Washington. He married the late Jennifer Blackburn Dunn in 1965 and fathered two sons: Bryant in 1969, and Reagan in 1971. Both boys are avid bowhunters and firearms hunters. Bryant currently owns and operates a very successful Outfitter/Guide Service in the back-country of Idaho. He specializes in elk and deer — bow or rifle, as well as in grouse hunting and flyfishing. Sun Valley Outfitters can be viewed on the web at: (http://www.sunvalleyoutfitters.org/) Intrigued with politics, Dunn left the teaching profession in 1970, when he was elected Chairman of the King County Republican Party. He served in that position for 6 years, and in 1976 he was elected as the GOP National Committeeman for the state of Washington. He ultimately rose to be a Vice-Chairman of the Republican National Committee, before finally resigning his various Party positions in 1983 and becoming a securities broker. By then, his attention to bowhunting had become a major avocation in life. In 1988, he moved to Vancouver, B.C., where he met Karen, who became his beloved bride in 1989. A year before returning to Seattle in 1999, Dunn began pursuing actively his passion for opera, and he soon accepted appointment as the Northwest Regional Chairman of the Metropolitan Opera National Council. To this date, he still serves as a leader in that organization’s quest to find and promote gifted young opera singers onto the stages of the world’s opera houses. He joined the Pope & Young Club in 1972, and he has been a Senior Member of that organization since 1985. In September of 2004, Dunn completed a 40-year odyssey when he harvested a male Alaskan Brown Bear on Baranof Island in S.E. Alaska and completed what has become known in hunting circles as the North American Super Slam: the taking of all 28 huntable big-game animals recognized by the Pope & Young Club. Although six other bowhunters had managed to accomplish that feat prior to Dunn, he was the first to complete the Super Slam barebow — meaning no pins, no sights, or other aiming devices. In short, his arrows were guided only by instinct. Of the 29 Pope & Young species, 17 of Dunn’s original 29 have been listed in the Club’s records. Since the fall of 2004, he has added five more species to the records listings. Dave Hewett, Vice President of Compton Traditional Bowhunters, joins the podcast to discuss the growing community of traditional bowhunters.   Compton Traditional Bowhunters Traditional bowhunters talked about having their own organization for years, but it wasn't until May of 1999, at the Pope and Young Club Awards Banquet, that a meeting of interested bowhunters was held to discuss the possibilities of such an organization. An article by Glenn St. Charles, “IT’S TIME,” appeared in the Dec/Jan 1996 issue of TRADITIONAL BOWHUNTER MAGAZINE encouraging traditional bowhunters to form their own organization, and to create a separate identity distinct from the modern bowhunter. Many bowhunters agreed with Glenn, feeling it was, indeed, time. Out of this initial meeting came a second, smaller, meeting held in conjunction with the “Traditional Bowhunter’s Nationals,” which were held each year in Cloverdale, Indiana. The 15 to 20 bowhunters who attended this meeting became the nucleus of the steering committee which formed COMPTON TRADITIONAL BOWHUNTERS. Glenn St. Charles attended both meetings and was a major contributor to the formation of the organization. Glenn also formed the famed Pope and Young Club in the late 1950's to show the hunting world of the day that the longbow and recurve bow and arrow was a worthy hunting weapon and should be taken seriously...goals that few of today’s bowhunters recognize as necessities in that era.
