Takeaways Weather is a powerful and often misunderstood aspect of the coffee industry. El Niño and La Niña significantly influence coffee production and market dynamics. The impact of weather on coffee is not uniform; it varies by region and time. Coffee trees require specific weather conditions at critical growth stages. Understanding weather patterns helps in assessing risks in coffee production. El Niño can create both risks and opportunities for coffee growers. Regional data is crucial for understanding the specific impacts of weather on coffee. Having a contingency plan is essential in coffee. The conversation emphasizes the importance of separating signal from noise in weather-related news.   Part of The Covoya Coffee Podcasting Network TAKE OUR LISTENER SURVEY Visit and Explore Covoya!

In this episode, I sit down with Jamie Walden — founder of Omega Dynamics, former Marine infantryman, police officer, firefighter/paramedic, missionary, and resilience trainer — for a powerful conversation about faith, discernment, and navigating uncertain times. We begin by discussing unusual global weather patterns and why many people are paying closer attention to environmental shifts happening around the world.Jamie shares how he views these changes through a biblical worldview and why conversations around awareness, preparedness, and spiritual grounding are becoming more relevant. We also explore the long tradition of watching for “signs in the heavens,” and how faith communities have historically interpreted natural events, cultural shifts, and global instability as reminders to stay spiritually anchored and discerning.More than anything, this conversation centers on how to remain steady when the world feels uncertain. Episode OverviewThe Articulate Fly kicks off 2026 with the first Southwest Virginia Fishing Report featuring guide Matt Reilly, who breaks down winter musky strategies for navigating January's unpredictable conditions in Southwest Virginia's river systems. Matt explains how musky concentrate in specific locations during cold water periods (upper 30s to low 40s) and why cloudy, warm days create ideal winter fishing opportunities. The conversation covers tactical approaches for fishing through temperature swings, managing variable weather fronts and the concentrated fish behavior that makes winter musky fishing productive when anglers fish intentionally. Matt also discusses his 2026 booking calendar, upcoming smallmouth pre-spawn season and his appearance at the Buckeye United Fly Fishers show in Cincinnati. This report delivers practical insight for serious predator anglers targeting musky during the challenging but rewarding winter season, with additional perspective on spring striper opportunities and the year ahead without periodical cicada hatches.Key TakeawaysHow to locate winter musky by understanding that colder water temperatures concentrate fish into specific, predictable locations rather than spreading them throughout a system. Why cloudy, warm days with water temperatures in the upper 30s to low 40s create optimal winter musky conditions despite variable January weather patterns. When to adjust your approach for cold water musky fishing by being more intentional about location selection rather than avoiding winter conditions altogether.Techniques & Gear CoveredMatt Reilly emphasizes the importance of intentional, location-focused fishing during winter musky conditions. The discussion centers on tactical approaches for cold water periods when fish are concentrated rather than dispersed, requiring anglers to be strategic about where they invest their time and energy. Matt explains how water temperature fluctuations between the low 30s and low 40s influence fish behavior and how managing frontal systems and variable weather conditions factors into successful winter musky pursuits. The report also touches on Matt's smallmouth fly patterns and his approach to pre-spawn smallmouth tactics as the calendar moves toward late winter and early spring transitions.Locations & SpeciesThis Southwest Virginia Fishing Report focuses on Matt Reilly's home waters in Southwest Virginia, primarily targeting musky during the winter season. The discussion covers river systems experiencing variable January conditions, with water temperatures ranging from the low 30s (with ice) to the low 40s during warming trends. Matt also discusses upcoming opportunities for pre-spawn smallmouth bass in late winter and early spring and striper fishing scheduled for April and May. The region's fisheries demonstrate the characteristic boom-and-bust weather patterns of mid-Atlantic winters, where 70-degree days can give way to frozen conditions within a week, making day-by-day assessment critical for successful winter fishing.FAQ / Key Questions AnsweredHow do cold water temperatures affect winter musky location and behavior?Matt explains that cold water and ice don't necessarily shut down musky fishing but rather concentrate fish into very specific locations. The colder conditions are, the more packed fish tend to be in predictable spots. When water temperatures start warming up during comfortable weather windows, these concentrated fish can become quite active while remaining in those same predictable locations, making winter fishing productive for anglers who understand where to focus their efforts. What are the...

The Failure of Precision Bombing — James M. Scott — Scott explains the systematic failure of Hansell's precision bombing doctrine: Japan's notoriously unpredictable weather patterns and the unexpected discovery of violent jet streams traversing the Pacific islands rendered high-altitude precision bombing operationally nearly impossible. Scottdocuments that the B-29, which cost approximately $3.7 billion in development expenditures—exceeding the financial investment in the atomic bomb—suffered chronic mechanical defects including catastrophic engine fires and structural failures compromising operational reliability. Scott details that early raids targeting Japanese aircraft manufacturing facilities failed to destroy critical industrial targets, resulting in the grim nickname "Flack Alley" for the densely defended airspace above Nagoya and Tokyo. Scott notes that General Arnold, demonstrating impatience with mounting losses and facing escalating political pressure to produce quantifiable military results, replaces the intellectual Hansell with the pragmatic Curtis LeMay after merely 44 days of failed operations. 1930 TOKYO

The primary focus of today's briefing is the current weather conditions across the United States, particularly the anticipated storm system that is expected to bring substantial precipitation to California and the Pacific Northwest. I report that there are no active tropical cyclones in either the Atlantic or Pacific basins, nor is any formation expected in the forthcoming week. Additionally, wildfire activity remains low nationally, with only a significant incident reported in Arizona, where the Stanford Fire continues to be monitored. Furthermore, I highlight the establishment of resource centers in Alaska to assist survivors of recent storms, underscoring the ongoing recovery efforts in affected areas. As we assess the current seismic activity, I note that no damaging earthquakes have been reported, reflecting a period of relative stability in that regard.Takeaways:* The National Hurricane Center reports no active tropical cyclones across the Atlantic or Pacific basins, indicating a period of calm in these regions. * Heavy precipitation is anticipated in California and the Pacific Northwest, necessitating awareness of potential winter weather impacts in elevated terrains. * Wildfire activity in the United States remains at a preparedness level of one, with only a single significant incident reported in Arizona. * Alaska's State Emergency Operations center is actively supporting survivors of the 2025 West Coast storm through a multi-agency resource center in Anchorage. * A quick-moving winter storm is currently affecting the Sierra Nevada region of California, prompting winter storm warnings for high elevation areas. * Montana is experiencing high wind warnings that are set to remain in effect throughout the day, particularly in the north-central region. How has the weather impacted the end of this year's crop? And what does our winter weather outlook say?   Find out as Mike Howell sits down with Nutrien Ag Solution's Sr. Science Fellow and Atmospheric Scientist, Eric Snodgrass, to unpack what's shaping up to be quite a familiar story; La Niña is back, and this winter's weather patterns are looking a lot like last year's.   Eric breaks down why the Bermuda High has shifted and how that's fueling dry conditions across the mid-south, and what farmers can expect heading into another La Niña winter. He explains the odd episodes of drought we've witnessed in the last three years, the current moisture pattern we're in, and his long-range weather outlook around the globe, from Europe and Australia to North and South America.   Plus, he shares his biggest watch out this season. The jet stream, a fast-moving river of air thousands feet above Earth, steers storms and weather systems around the globe.Scientists have been studying how climate changes impact the jet stream for decades. Now, one study in the scientific journal Nature, discovered a jet stream behavior change.“The jet streams are shifting,” said Larry Di Girolamo, professor and climate researcher with the University of Illinois. Di Girolamo worked with NASA to gather statistics from Earth's atmosphere through the launch of a satellite carrying a Multi-angle Imaging SpectroRadiometer. Over the span of 25 years, his research showed that both subtropical and polar jet streams are shifting position and speed, leading to a change in weather patterns. “And this will continue as long as we continue to increase carbon dioxide in the atmosphere,” Di Girolamo said.To hear the full conversation, click play on the audio player above or subscribe to the Climate Cast podcast.
