Bronson Strickland is arguably one of the leading extension deer biologists in the entire country. Robbie and Bronson used to be in the same Wildlife and Fisheries department at Mississippi State University, and so Bronson was invited onto the show by Robbie for this special second installment of our CWD Series to explore some of the major questions around the management of white-tailed deer with Chronic Wasting Disease. With this series we wanted to explore first the private land owners perspective (Doug Duren) on CWD, and then talk to an extension biologist and their landscape level purview of the issue and management implications around it. Doug Duren of Blood Origins fame (kidding, but he is a frequent guest of ours and we love him!) joins us for the landowner perspective in Wisconsin - one of the hot beds of the Chronic Wasting Disease crisis affecting our nation, where 80+% of counties are testing positive for CWD. Doug shares what he's seen from his decades of hunting the same piece of land. The CWD discussion is a very hot topic right now, especially with what is happening all over the United States, from Georgia to North Dakota. Deer hunting is the most common thread in the fabric of American hunting culture, and once you've had a good taste of it, it's easy to see why that is. But just as all other enjoyable pursuits have become commercialized so has deer hunting. So much so that sometimes it's simplest components that make it such a great part of the human experience are lost within the market driven perspectives, products, and trends. My good friend Doug Duren joined me to discuss this reality, and provide his insight on the issue. Reid joins Doug Duren of Meateater fame and Dave Simonett, frontman of Trampled by Turtles, to discuss hunting, touring, and the creative process of writing prose and music. Dave and Doug both hail from the upper midwest, and reflect on the mystery behind all that goes into bird hunting over dogs. Moreover, they dig deep into how creative acts of storytelling inform music and writing, and perhaps how those days afield both fuel the process and provide a welcome break.
Curt Meine is a Senior Fellow at the Aldo Leopold Foundation and one of the world's foremost experts on the life, work, and legacy of conservation icon Aldo Leopold. Curt is the author of the biography “Aldo Leopold: His Life and Work,” and he also works as a conservation biologist, a professor, a senior fellow with the Center for Humans and Nature, and much more. - Since the very beginning of Mountain & Prairie, Aldo Leopold has been one of the most referenced, admired, and influential conservation thinkers whose name and ideas have been referenced over and over on the podcast. Whether I'm talking to people in agriculture or entertainment, writing or athletics, history or politics, there always seems to be a thread of thinking that connects many Mountain and Prairie guests to the Land Ethic of Aldo Leopold. - So, I was long overdue in devoting an episode exclusively to Leopold, and I was thrilled to have the opportunity to chat with Curt, one of our most admired and trusted Leopold scholars. Whether you are brand new to the work of Leopold or you've read A Sand County Almanac a hundred times, I think you'll learn a lot from this episode. Curt has a real gift for discussing the details of Leopold's life in an amazingly engaging way, while also helping us to understand Leopold's legacy in the context of the broad history of North American conservation. - We start the conversation with an overview of Leopold's early years and upbringing, and his eventual enrollment in the Yale School of Forestry. We discuss Leopold's formative years in the American Southwest, how his outside-the-box ideas about wildlife sometimes clashed with the status quo, and his eventual move back to Wisconsin. We talk a lot about Leopold's personality and how it compares to other conservation icons, how his work was received both in his lifetime and after his death, his surprising challenges finding a publisher for A Sand County Almanac, and that book's long-lasting influence. We also discuss criticisms of Leopold's work, some of his ideas that may not hold up as well today as they did in their time, and Leopold's abundant curiosity and willingness to change his mind. We also discuss books, the very important work of the Aldo Leopold Foundation, and much more. - Be sure to check out the episode notes for a full list of topics and links to everything. And also, I want to thank my friend, the great conservationist and all-around amazing human Doug Duren for so generously introducing me to the team at The Aldo Leopold Foundation and being such a steadfast champion of Leoplod's legacy. Food plotting is a major aspect of the hunting world, and much of it is as Doug Duren says "bringing sand to the beach." In this episode we discuss topics ranging from the Driftless Area of the United States, to the history of the famed Duren Family Farm, and even the management of Chronic Wasting Disease in deer populations. Most importantly though the theme of conserving the land we are made of serves as the undertone to the whole conversation.

Doug Duren is one of the most dedicated conservationists of our time. He's an Aldo Leopold fan, and his passion for conservation led him to coining the catchy phrase, “It's not ours, it's just our turn.” He is a contributor to MeatEater and is a regular guest on the MeatEater podcast. Doug joins Nick and the Doctor to discuss a range of hunting and conservation topics and he shares why he is particularly dedicated to getting the word out about chronic wasting disease when so many others shy away from it. He talks about managing his family farm that has been in the family for 120 years, and how his management of the property differs from that of his father. Part of that management involves sharing it with his friends and also as a tool to recruit new hunters. He believes private landowners can do more for conservation and he is leading by example. Also in this episode we answer three Ask NDA Anything questions ranging from food plots to fawns to saddle hunting. Nick shares the story of his not so incredible journey home from a recent trip to Austin, TX and the guys rehash their turkey hunting adventures, which are always more entertaining than productive. We hunters and anglers are often lost, these days, in a thicket of questions about public land and private land, loss of access, too much access, conservation priorities, conflicting desires and goals. One person who is forging a path through this thicket is Doug Duren, hunter-conservationist, multi-generational Driftless Area landowner in southern Wisconsin, and somewhat unlikely conservation and hunting media star. Join us for a deeply inspiring conversation about something overwhelmingly positive that is happening right now – when it matters – because, as Doug reminds us, when it comes to land, water and wildlife, “It's not ours, it's just our turn.” Join Us: Backcountry Hunters and Anglers
This episode of the Seek Outside Podcast, we talk with Doug Duren. We dove into the topic of private land hunting in America and how radically it has changed. Doug has a new concept called "Sharing the Land" in which people can trade manual labor, helping the land owner out, for hunting access. We also spoke about the pivotal role that land owners have in conservation.Check out Dougs website for more info here: https://www.dougduren.com
In this episode we sit down with both Doug Duren, who is a famed deer hunter and landowner in Wisconsin, as well as Megan Lee who is a biologist who has done work in the Chronic Wasting Disease field. We were able to get multiple different perspectives on the effects of CWD as well as its current place in the eco system. Greg and Eric drove up to Doug Duren's family farm to have a chat about conservation. Doug talks about the legacy of his family farm, the gentrification of the land in the Wisconsin Driftless area, what his definition of conservation is, how all of that impacts Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD), what Doug has been able to do to minimize the risk and spread of CWD and what we all can be doing to support conservation. Overall it's a great episode with some great philosophical perspectives, good laughs, and meaningful conversations about what is important to our hunting heritage. Overnight winds had swept the oaks below, blowing fresh snow into drifts higher than a whitetail's brisket. I knew the snow's depth because a doe crossing the woods below me was plowing a furrow in the fluffy blanket as she approached. The doe paused occasionally in her midmorning stroll to browse buds and stems, and finally walked broadside at 100 yards into a shooting lane. I put the riflescope's crosshairs on her shoulder blade and fired my...

Doug Duren — passionate hunter, farmer, land manager and conservationist — is a national voice in the conservation movement, and in particular, in the conversation around Chronic Wasting Disease in the North American deer herd. His guiding principle is simple: It's not ours, it's just our turn. We cover a lot of ground in this interview — from the impacts of big ag on the wild game we harvest to getting new hunters access to good hunting grounds, how chronic wasting disease is changing the hunting space and what we can do about it, and, ultimately, what it really means to be stewards of the landscapes we care for during our short visit here on earth. You might have heard or seen Doug on a few MeatEater podcasts alongside Steve Rinella and on the Back40 episodes with Mark Kenyon. Joe Rogan also has had a great conversation with Doug. You might have heard Doug speak so passionately about land management and ethical responsibility. Doug actually has come alongside some of my very own West TN landowners to talk about CWD.Today, Doug Duren joins me for a heavy conversation about CWD and our responsibility as "land owners" to the holding at bay the spread of this disease within our herds. We talk numbers, science, awesome things that in the works to make it easier to dispose of carcasses that are infected...dumpster programs... and being a part of the testing process. We talk about what it is like from a land owner perspective of inviting others on your property to hunt and help with managing numbers to the hunters who are helping landowners with management to the public land hunters. How are apps like OnX joining the fight? We are all fighting CWD in one way or another; either to actively fight in the middle of it or fight to keep it at bay! Join us for this conversation and let us know how you and your state are involved in keeping CWD from eradicating your deer and elk herds.
