The marketplace is no stranger to speculation and unpredictability, with investors often left to navigate the highs and lows of the financial rollercoaster. As more investors seek to balance risk and reward, defined outcome ETFs present an enticing solution that marries the quest for growth with the imperative for protection. They will give you the maximum you can get from the options market on the upside over two years. It removes all the middlemen, all the banks, all the annuities, all the funds, and all these people that get their hands in the pot." ~ Bruce Bond [23:38] - "The defined outcome category is gaining a lot of traction. This controlled exposure to the marketplace is where we will see a lot of growth in the future." ~ Bruce Bond Links Bruce Bond Innovator ETFs One Thing At A Time by Morgan Wallen The Blessing by Elevation Worship First Trust Nuveen Connect with our hosts Rusty Vanneman Robyn Murray Subscribe and stay in touch Apple Podcasts Spotify Google Podcasts 1856-OPS-7/11/2023

Thirty years ago today, the very first exchange-traded fund started trading on the American Stock Exchange. At the time, Bill Clinton had just moved into the White House and America was trying on a new role as the world's lone superpower. On Wall Street, an entire industry soon realized that the ETF was a revolution all its own. Today, there are more than 3,000 ETFs listed in the US, plus another 6,000 international ones, and together they hold $6.8 trillion in assets. In “The ETF Story,” a special six-episode series originally published five years ago, Eric and Joel explore the origins of the first ETF and how it's come to dominate investing. Among those interviewed are Jack Bogle, Kathleen Moriarty, Bob Toll, Howard Kramer, Rob Arnott, Dave Ritter, Reggie Browne, Dave Nadig, John O'Brien, Bruce Bond and more. Here's episode 1. On Monday Oct. 19, 1987, the stock market fell 23 percent, the worst day ever for stocks two times over. It was in the aftermath of that crash that the idea for exchange-traded funds was born. And it came from a very unlikely place: the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Most of us can agree that finding common ground is a good thing, but we desperately struggle to put it into action. My guest this week is Bruce Bond, the CEO and Co-Founder of the Common Ground Committee, one of many organizations working to provide the "spark of inspiration" needed to help us come together in more meaningful ways. Bruce says that without an outside common enemy, we often turn on ourselves and polarize, and this is why its so important for the so-called "exhausted majority" to find its voice. We are roughly six months into the pandemic. Equity markets have regained nearly all of their losses following their precipitous decline in March. But the economy remains in a recession. Some are even calling it a depression. Advisors and their clients want downside protection, but also want to participate in the upside if markets continue to perform well. That has made defined-outcome ETFs the most popular product type among ETFs. Here today to talk about how those ETFs work is Bruce Bond of Innovator ETFs, the leading provider of defined-outcome ETFs.

In a time of an extremely divided America, Bruce Bond works with his team to develop common ground and inspire others to create positive change. Bruce Bond has always had a love of politics; he studied it in college and has found great value in political engagement. But over the past several years, American politics has morphed into a new beast, something very different from what he had studied and admired. “It had come to the point where there was a lot of demonizing going on, where if you disagree with me politically, then there’s something wrong with your character,” Bruce explains. “We just felt that was a really dangerous thing.” He and his childhood friend, Erik Olsen, developed an idea of putting people from opposing viewpoints on stage together and then asking them to find points of agreement. The Common Ground Committee was first a side job, something Bruce and Erik would do when they had some spare time. But after two extremely successful events — one in the wake of the 2018 Charlottesville protests and another with John Kerry and Condoleezza Rice — the side job started to gain traction. Not long afterwards, Bruce quit his decades-long IT career to develop Common Ground into a full-time nonprofit. As the country grows more divided over the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and other Black Americans, the national response to the coronavirus pandemic and the upcoming presidential election, Bruce hopes that the public uses these meetings of the minds as the foundation for difficult but civil conversations. “When people are awakened to the seriousness of a problem or what is possible either way, they start to move differently and they start to think and act differently and speak differently than what they've done in the past,” he says. “We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.” Listen to the complete episode with Bruce Bond to hear more about Common Ground Committee’s “grass-tops” approach, the exhausted majority and Bruce’s high school experience with the notion of try, try, try again. If you're feeling low, turn up the radio. This was a very fun half hour. At one point in Bruce Bond's career he was one of the most popular radio personalities in the country, and my colleague and good friend Sean Daly was along for the ride telling me that Bruce "raised" him. Years later, I'd do several guest spots on Bruce's show while I was an anchor in Harrisburg, PA. Sean stops by the studio and we pick Bruce's brain about his successes, favorite guests, and more. We all share a lot of laughs and probably too many compliments. Watch the video version of this episode on my YouTube Channel. Find me on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook.

Ed Shill chief investment officer at QCI Asset Management, says in the Market Call that as the market has moved from overbought in January to dramatically oversold in March, investors should have started looking for opportunities to buy and take small steps to take money off the sidelines and start taking advantage of the bargains. Also on the show, Paula Fleming of the Better Business Bureaus talks about increasingly popular -- and dangerous -- cryptocurrency scams, Bruce Bond of Innovator ETFs discusses defined-outcome investing and how it has held up in the down market, and Mike Brown of LendEDU.com covers Americans' financial condition as they entered the shelter-at-home economy.

Anger, hate and a general disconnect from society seems to pervade our everyday lives more and more. We saw it this weekend in Dayton and El Paso. We hear it in statements from our elected leaders. We see it on the streets of Charlottesville, Washington DC and other places. One group, Common Ground Commitee, led by Bruce Bond is trying to "bring light, not heat to public discourse." We sit down with Bond to get his take. We can all make a difference by increasing voter turnout in primary elections so that all voices are heard, Bond says, and we need to focus on the 70% exhausted majority in the US and get them reengaged.
Markus Schomer, chief economist at Pinebridge Investments, said that while job growth and economic activity are slowing, the anticipated interest rate cuts should reboot business activity and leave the economy at an equilibrium point it can maintain through 2020. Buck Klintworth of Chase Investment Counsel -- while discussing technical analysis rather than the economy -- came to a similar conclusion, noting that while the market is currently 'ahead of itself' and could be due for a short-term setback, declines will be buying opportunities from now through most of the election year, suggesting that investors ignore the noise and instead see the market's potential. Also on the show, Bruce Bond of Innovator ETFs discusses defined-outcome investing, which effectively crosses indexed-annuity products with exchange-traded funds, and Judith Ward of T. Rowe Price discusses a recent survey showing how far behind Baby Boomer women are compared to men when it comes to retirement savings.
Bruce Bond is co-founder of the Common Ground Committee. It is a citizen-led initiative free of a political agenda and financial influences that is committed to “Bringing Light Not Heat To Public Discourse”. Bruce brings together thought leaders and influencers of opposing opinions to show that people can work together and find common ground on important issues without compromising values. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/brianwilliamsmd/message
