This month we're talking to an author and publisher/manager about audiobooks and how they approach to audiobooks. We cover how they chose narrators for their books, and how audiobooks affect the writing and management of their business.  We also have the long awaited re-introduction of ‘News From Equity' with Annette Rizzo.   C.K. (Caimh) McDonnell is the paranormal pen name of Irish bestselling author Caimh McDonnell. He is a former stand-up comedian and TV writer who now spends all his time writing books as his dogs don't like it when he leaves the house.  When not writing about the adventures of the staff at The Stranger Times, he is the author of the increasingly inaccurately titled ‘Dublin Trilogy' series (eight books and counting) and its various spinoffs, all of which have been Amazon bestsellers on both sides of the Atlantic. The Dublin Trilogy has been optioned for TV by Avalon (Breeders, Taskmaster) with Chris Addison at the helm. The Stranger Times has been optioned by Playground (Wolf Hall, The Undeclared War) who are working on the series with Peacock. The Stranger Times won Best Audio at the 2023 British Fantasy Awards, a fact Caimh constantly endeavours to drop into casual conversation. He lives in Manchester, where The Stranger Times series is set.   Elaine Ofori After over two decades of collecting seemingly random skills across publishing and marketing/communications, Elaine is finally putting them to good use at her publishing company McFori Ink as Head of Stuff/Chief Wrangler, where she spends her days mulling over words. She's taken this love of words one step further and has turned them into fully constructed sentences that are slightly more creative than the reports and strategies she's spent most of her career writing. Her debut novel, co-written with her husband, author C.K. McDonnell, will be published in Germany in 2025.    News From Equity links - Equity Game On campaign details - https://www.equity.org.uk/news/2024/equity-solidarity-rally-with-sag-aftra-at-uk-games-industry-agm   The story about Dan Dewhirst, which includes links to the AI Toolkit and info on the Stop AI Stealing the Show campaign, is here - https://www.equity.org.uk/news/2024/actor-s-experience-of-ai-gone-wrong   The radio commercials campaign and survey email is titled ‘ Radio Commercials - help shape Equity's work' and will have come from ssailing@equity.org.uk    Cambridge VO Social facebook page is here. Caimh McDonnell is the internationally bestselling author of the Dublin Trilogy which is set in his hometown. His debut novel A Man with One of Those Faces – a darkly comedic crime thriller – was published in 2016. It went on to spawn the increasingly uncountable Dublin Trilogy (seven and a half books and counting) and the McGarry Stateside series. The books have been ranked #1 in their Amazon categories in the UK, Ireland and the USA, have been translated into several languages and optioned for television. He also writes the critically acclaimed The Stranger Times series under the name of C.K. McDonnell. These books combine his distinctive dark wit with his love of the weird and wonderful to deliver a celebration of how truth really can be stranger than fiction. We had great fun chatting with Caimh and hearing about why he left stand-up comedy for novel writing. He gave some great tips on how to be successful in self-publishing and also explains why he enjoys being both self-published and trad published, and why he went down that route.Links:Buy Caimh's books now!Follow Caimh on Twitter/XVisit Caimh's websitePage One - The Writer's Podcast is brought to you by Write Gear, creators of Page One - the Writer's Notebook. Liz and Ben are joined by guest author Caimh “C. K.” McDonnell as they read a very early and very short chapter in the history of the Watch: Terry Pratchett's 1993 short Discworld story, “Theatre of Cruelty”. When the Watch discover a murdered entertainer with pockets full of change, a string of sausages round his neck, and no witnesses to the crime, the Clues are very unhelpful. But Corporal Carrot is on the case - and when it comes to solving the crime, he knows the way to do it... Written for W H Smith's free Bookcase magazine - a pristine copy of which now fetches a few hundred dollars - “Theatre of Cruelty” was published not long before the second Watch novel, Men at Arms. It packs more jokes into 1,000 words than most people write in a lifetime, and is also a delightful extra outing with the original officers of the Ankh-Morpork City Watch. But don't take our word for it: you can read it yourself at the L-Space web. Is it a satisfying murder mystery? Why does Pratchett seem to have a thing for Punch and Judy? And how on Earth did we talk for nearly two hours about such a short piece of writing? Join the conversation - and send us your favourite short stories and cruel bits of theatre - using the hashtag #Pratchat70. Guest Caimh McDonnell is a comedian, writer and author best known for two series of books. The first is the “Dublin Trilogy” comic thrillers, starring Bunny McGarry and a cast of loveable rogues, beginning with A Man With One of Those Faces in 2016 (though see the reading order on his website). The other - as C. K. McDonnell - is the comic urban fantasy series The Stranger Times, about a weird newspaper called The Stranger Times, and beginning with the novel titled...er...The Stranger Times in 2021. Aside from his books you can hear his writing on two podcasts: The Bunnycast for further crime stories, and The Stranger Times Podcast for more Stranger Times. You might also catch him live this Halloween via his Facebook or YouTube accounts! Caimh is on Twitter at @caimh, and his website is whitehairedirishman.com. Now, against all odds, it seems he may actually be proved right; but what lengths will he go to in an attempt to rescue her? With Banecroft distracted, the shock resignation of assistant editor, Hannah Willis, couldn't have come at a worse time. It speaks volumes that her decision to reconcile with her philandering ex-husband is only marginally less surprising than Banecroft and his wife getting back together. In this time of crisis, is her decision to swan off to a fancy new-age retreat run by a celebrity cult really the best thing for anyone? As if that wasn't enough, one of the paper's ex-columnists has disappeared, a particularly impressive trick seeing as he never existed in the first place.Floating statues, hijacked ghosts, homicidal cherubs, irate starlings, Reliant Robins and quite possibly several deeply sinister conspiracies; all-in-all, a typical week for the staff of The Stranger Times.CK McDonnell: Born in Limerick and raised in Dublin, C K (Caimh) McDonnell is a former stand-up comedian and TV writer. How to write humour - with Caimh McDonnell

We speak to Caimh McDonnell about humour. Caimh is a comedian and writer. He's written for TV shows such as Mock The Week and Have I Got News for You. He was also a professional stand-up comedian and has written a dozen books under the names Caimh and CK McDonnell.  Being funny in fiction is hard, so we wanted to ask the Manchester-based Irishman how to do it - or at least, how he does it. The cover of The Stranger Times says: What if the weird news was the real news? An apt way to describe the premise.  The book is the first in a series of novels set in Manchester in which the weird phenomena of the Fortean Times is alive and well - from mythical beasts to UFOs. We get to explore this weird world through the staff of the namessake newspaper and the result is a Pratchett-esque treatment of the supernatural thriller/mystery genre. And it is funny. Some things are easier to teach than others. You might argue that being funny is the hardest thing of all. Nonetheless, the conversation will hopefully give you some insights into how to bring humour to your writing. The conversation covers characters, dialogue, conflict, genre and the inversion of expectation. Find out more about Caimh at whitehairedirishman.shop

It's the start of a brand new comic supernatural thriller series from C.K.We talk about the post-it notes all over the office that let him know when he's taken a wrong turn, how jokes sometimes get in the way of the plot and why he watches out for that constantly. You can hear about a writing year for Caimh, and why he's been so productive since stopping stand-up, and also about the difference between craft and inspiration. You can grab a copy of 'The Stranger Times' here - https://amzn.to/3pRMZczAlso, please have a look at the wonderful book 'The Pink Coffee Shop' by podcast fan Ellie Barker. This week, Caimh McDonnell, author of the best-selling Dublin Trilogy, the McGarry Stateside books and Stranger Times joined Jarlath for a conversation about how rejection paced the way for his success. Caimh opens up about his journey to self-publishing success including the doors that were slammed for the most ridiculous of reasons. We hear how the motivation to move to London struck him when he realised how fast his life was passing away in Dublin without very much happening. Jarlath finds out about the “not in front of people I know” route into standup, the successful TV writing career he built and how he chose to end it. The friendship with Gary Delaney that changed everything for him, the buzz of getting his work optioned for TV, the exciting bidding war which ensued and much more, this is a thoroughly heart-warming conversation with one of Ireland's true creative writing talents. Today you'll be hearing a belter of a podcast with Irish stand-up comedian and author, Caimh McDonnell. This is a long one as tends to happen when you get two Irish lads on the phone together, clocking it at nearly an hour. I had a great time talking to Caimh, his stand-up is fantastic, he's got a great talents for telling hilarious stories and being spontaneous with the crowd as well. We spoke about how his show has changed over the years, how he has honed his comedic talents while writing for other comedians and performers thanks to his time writing for a multitude of British TV panel shows. We also chatted about his first book "A Man with One of Those Faces" and how it came about. We spoke about his recent Edinburgh Show "Bride and Prejudice" and his experiences with racism. Rugby gets a mention, Caimh is the stadium announcer for London Irish, as does football, former Irish manager Giovanni Trapattoni gets a mention when Caimh asked him what happened when Nigeria scored a goal against Ireland. We also spoke about the podcast he puts out with British stand-up comedian Gary Delaney called Panel Beaters, a panel show where the losers die as the game progresses. We spoke too about Pet Squad.....Dodge the beagle, Sheeba the tabby cat and Bingo the guinea pig - three domestic pets who lead a thrilling double life as unlikely superheroes....a CBBC cartoon Caimh wrote many moons ago. As I said, this interview is a long one but it was fascinating to speak to someone who is still totally in love with comedy and who is a successful stand-up, comedy writer and author
