Julian, Madeline, and Emilio are joined by Brendan McDonald, the producer of 'WTF with Marc Maron,' to finish off their cycle of New York City movies with a "Close-Up" on the works of legendary cinematographer Owen Roizman. A versatile visual talent ready for whatever came his way, Roizman burst out of the gate with William Friedkin's crime drama "The French Connection" (1971), in which he unforgettably and frantically photographed a plethora of New York locales. This showcase of his skills made him the perfect choice to shoot "The Taking of Pelham One Two Three" (1974), the Joseph Sargent-directed, subway-set thriller infused with workplace humor that indelibly captures a timeless spirit of New York. But Roizman's aptitude also extended beyond the grimy streets and subway tunnels, and rose up to the broadcasting towers of Midtown Manhattan in "Network" (1976), the darkly prescient media satire written by Paddy Chayefsky and directed by Sidney Lumet. Blending their eyes for detail with their lived experience as New Yorkers, the group get into how Roizman's visual sense cemented the iconic status of these films, and why they stand the test of time even as they were made just a few years apart from one another. It's Die Hard in a hockey arena! This time on the show, Phil and Liam pile on the cringeworthy hockey puns with special guest Brendan McDonald, producer of the WTF podcast with Marc Maron and an avowed action movie aficionado. Together they analyze the 1995 action movie SUDDEN DEATH – a fondly-remembered film with a classic ‘Die Hard on a Blank' premise. After failing to save a young girl during an inferno, troubled former firefighter Darren McCord (Jean-Claude Van Damme) now works as a Fire Marshal for the Civic Arena in Pittsburgh. In an effort to mend fences with his estranged kids, McCord scores them tickets to Game Seven of the Stanley Cup Final…but this dream outing soon turns into a nightmare when the stadium is taken over by a group of terrorists led by ruthless bad guy Joshua Foss (Powers Boothe), who holds the visiting Vice President (Raymond J. Barry) for ransom along with various other hostages. Phil, Liam and Brendan are all card-carrying members of the Peter Hyams Fan Club, and the guys eagerly discuss their mutual affection for the multi-talented director/writer/cinematographer who helmed SUDDEN DEATH. They also talk about the mysterious appeal of JCVD, Powers Boothe's divisive performance, and the impact of ice hockey on the zeitgeist in the 1990s (including the NHL Sega games). After taking a cue from the film's tuxedoed villain Joshua Foss, the guys then skate over to the ‘Die Hard Oscars' to dispense some action movie awards! This week on the Men at the Movies podcast, we're running a three man weave as we talk about Hustle. In order to become men who can mentor others, we must first receive affirmation of who we are. But it's difficult to trust the mentor because so many uninitiated men manipulate and abuse their power. And even though the only way to improve is through adversity, we find that when we engage and risk in what we believe in, even the setbacks and adversity are part of the best time of our lives. Never back down, and let's discover God's truth in this movie. Questions Who has seen your potential? Where do you feel invisible? Did you lose the person who believed in you? What does that feel like? How did you respond when you “had a bad game?” How can you learn from your worst days? Where do you feel like you belong? Where have you been fathered/led/mentored? Where are you being invited to father/lead/mentor others? Soylent Green was released in 1973 but takes place in 2022, RIGHT NOW! They're joined by Podcast Royalty, Brendan McDonald, Movie Trivia Champion & Super Producer of WTF with Marc Maron... Every Heard Of Him?So yeah, these past movies thought they knew what the world would or could be in our present. What did they get right? What's completely wrong, and how do we engage with these themes. Anyway, just listen and enjoy!
In this, the final episode of series two of the pod, Caimh does a lot of thanking, reveals a bit of exciting news and an idea for a unique way to write a short story for series 3 that might be a total car crash but you'll get to watch. Then - he chats with narration legend and all-round top man Brendan McDonald about his career and narrating The Stranger Times audiobooks.
Marc Maron is the host of a successful podcast, and when he and some other pioneers started out he didn't have to think much about the layers of technology he was using, until a patent troll came to call, asking for thousands of dollars to pay for the “rights” to podcasting because of a patent they were mis-using to get money from the nascent podcast world. Marc and his producer Brendan knew that if they didn't take up the fight to stop the trolls, then all of podcasting would be under threat, so they joined up with some EFF lawyers and a whole lot of listeners to win their fight. In this episode you'll learn about: The prior art, or evidence of earlier technology that EFF was able to present to courts to prove that the so-called “podcasting patent” was invalid. How the landmark Alice v. CLS Bank Supreme Court decision has helped make patent law better, but still didn't solve the problem of patent trolls Why patent trolls are a drain on innovationHow we should think about which ideas should be building blocks for the public good, and which should be owned Why the community that came together around the podcasting patent fight was critical to EFF's victory How EFF prevailed when the patent troll tried to get the names of EFF donorsThis podcast is supported by the Alfred P. Paul McDonald and his son Brendan get into the ring with Creed, the 2015 movie starring Michael B. Jordan, Sylvester Stallone, and Tessa Thompson. We talk about our struggle with the question of being worthy. We see identity bestowed with love and affirmation. As in all Rocky movies, we discover that our biggest fight is the one with the man inside of us. Join us as we discover God's truth in this movie. Questions What have you said “yes” to that makes you say “no” to other things (think kid's activities, work, date nights, etc)? What message did your father give you regarding your identity? What about your mother? Others? How have the things that hurt you made you a better person? What are you good at? What are your strengths? How do those strengths also frustrate you, or become a weakness? Example: You might be a passionate person, but criticize yourself for being over emotional. How would you define legacy? What legacy was handed down to you? What legacy are you giving your children? If you don't have children, what legacy would you like to pass on? What legacy have you established? When facing a change or challenge, what would you hope to hear from those closest to you? What are you afraid to hear? What makes your heart come alive? On episode #6 of the Dark Horse podcast I spoke to Brendan McDonald - the guy that launched Maron Maron’s super-successful WTF podcast. Brendan got his start in college radio, then moved on to NY public radio, where he botched the declaration of the Iraq War live in front of millions of listeners. But that didn’t stop him. Brendan now runs one of the most successful, profound, and interesting podcasts run out of the world’s most famous garage. Listen to the full episode to hear some of the things he’s learned about listening, engaging with an audience, and the art of the interview. Comedian Paul Mecurio is my guest co-host for this episode as he shares with us probably the best story I’ve ever heard - the time Paul McCartney agreed to be on his podcast and his hilarious scramble to try to make it happen.

Marc Maron says he “didn’t know anything about anything” when he began working in radio. But producer Brendan McDonald can tell you the moment he knew Maron could be a radio star. It was during a morning show on the ill-fated Air America network, and then-host Maron was ranting about overcooked lentils. “The phones lit up,” said McDonald. The two went on to create WTF With Marc Maron, the podcast now known for intense interviews with comedians, many of whom Maron quarreled with in the past. Maron’s latest book, Waiting for the Punch, is a collection of interview excerpts. In the Spiel, a few things Mike doesn’t understand about other people. Learn more about your ad choices. Brendan McDonald is the co-creator and executive producer of "WTF" with Marc Maron. He is an Emmy-winning producer and veteran of television, radio and digital media. He lives in Brooklyn with his wife and son. Brendan McDonald, Emmy Award winner and co-creator/producer of "WTF" with Marc Maron, discusses the evolution of their ground-breaking podcast and how they made history when President Obama came on the show. Brendan grew up in a family devoted to the arts and the seeds were planted at an early age to appreciate and create art with integrity. His own performance background and his encyclopedic knowledge and obsession with "Saturday Night Live" all played a part in his becoming the co creator of "WTF." He met Marc Maron in the early days of Air America when they were hired to create a live radio show together and it was clear to Brendan that Marc was the next Howard Stern. As a kid, Brendan performed in school plays but he understood early on what it would take to chase a career as a performer. So he set his sights on producing and he has done so for decades working with some of the biggest talents in news, but with Marc and the 'WTF" podcast, he has gained international recognition as a pioneer in the world of podcasting. His is a great success story where a labor of love and a passion for hard work has made something uniquely special. Together with Marc Maron, he has written and edited a book creating an oral history of life by weaving together stories from the podcast called 'Waiting for the Punch."

It's not entirely accurate to say this episode has never been heard by anyone before. About 700 people were in the room at the Now Hear This podcast festival in Anaheim this past October to hear Marc and his producer Brendan McDonald reveal the secrets behind WTF. It's the first time Marc and Brendan ever did anything like this together in front of a live audience. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information. This limited series dives deep into the WTF Vault (aka a shoebox under producer Brendan McDonald's bed) to present lost Marc Maron material that has never been heard by anyone else. In this episode, hear an unaired test show Marc and Brendan created ten years ago for a nighttime variety program on Los Angeles radio, featuring Patton Oswalt as the guest and Jim Earl as Marc's sidekick. However, despite considerable research underlining its importance, what is often missing or underplayed in discussions and initiatives relating to both these topics is that of the safety, security, and wellness of humanitarian staff and volunteers. The number of aid workers who are victims of attacks have almost tripled over the past ten years and research has repeatedly demonstrated a strong relationship between deployment to humanitarian crises and conditions such as depression, anxiety disorders, and posttraumatic stress disorder. Apart from being of grave concern in itself, this also seriously affects the effectiveness of humanitarian response. In this consultation event, the focus was on the following questions: What is the relationship between staff and volunteer wellness and humanitarian effectiveness? What current good practice exists for improving staff and volunteer wellness? What gaps currently exist relating to ensuring staff and volunteer wellness? What concrete improvements could be made?Read more at https://phap.org/WHS-30Jul2015

This week I talk to Brendan McDonald, producer of WTF with Marc Maron. We talk about the finer points of producing a world-class podcast, including booking the President of the United States, Barack Obama on their show. Brendan is the yin and Marc is the yang in making WTF get made. Brendan explains in details of the operations and production around creating their podcast, how they work together, and how booking President Obama was a year in the making. Additionally we learn about how collaboration is key when building a successful podcast, and how having no agenda when creating a show like WTF is what makes it stand-out in the podcast world. Great quotes from Brendan “Having the White House reach out to us is the reason that (the interview) happened. We wouldn’t have been so bold as to go the other way. I think that was just a huge win for podcasting in general. He has his pick of media outlets, a lot of options at the disposal of the President if he wants to communicate to the country and the world. So it’s very validating to know that podcasting had achieved a level of acceptance in the media landscape.” “That kind of yin and yang makes the relationship work—not just as professional colleagues. We’ve been friends for eleven years now.” “In the six hundred plus episodes we’ve done, we won’t do promotional interviews for the full episode... Mark will graciously have his friends over sometimes and do ten minutes at the beginning of an episode to help somebody that has a book out or a movie out, or something like that. His feeling about that is it’s kind of like an everybody can help everybody out situation. It’s not that we go requesting promotional stuff. It’s that people were gracious enough to appear on our show, which helped raise our tide quite a bit, so of course we’re going to pay the favor back.” Find out more about The Influencer Economy book: http://www.influencereconomy.com/
I’m really happy to be a podcaster today because today’s interviewee is Brendan McDonald, the producer of the WTF with Marc Maron podcast. Brendan was a really great guest. There were many times he could have just easily given me a yes or no response, but I could tell he went out of his way to give me an elaborate answer at times when it felt like maybe I didn’t ask the right question. We talk about Marc Maron and the famous Obama interview in his garage, Brendan’s background, and so much more on today’s podcast episode. Show Highlights 03:45 – Technically Brendan isn’t a podcaster. 07:45 – After Marc and Brendan got fired from Air America, they both knew they still wanted to work with each other. 09:00 – When did Brendan first meet Marc? 12:15 – Why did Brendan get into radio? 19:35 – At the time, there was nothing similar to what Marc and Brendan were doing. 24:15 – The WTF Podcast really starting taking off about 7 months in. 27:20 – Marc can really showcase his personality on the mic. 34:45 – The audio that’s in there has been left in there for a very valid reason. 39:55 – Marc knows how to prep people before the interview and the pre-interview parts are always being recorded. 41:35 – Brendan touches on the Obama interview and what it was like. 48:55 – This was the first time Obama did an hour long interview with a podcaster. 51:15 – Feel free to contact Brendan on Twitter @ProducerMcD 51:45 – It was such an awesome feeling to get a guy like Brendan on the show. 53:55 – Brendan is just an awesome producer and I think this kind of stuff comes naturally to him. Though he is rarely heard from on his own, Marc Maron says he considers WTF producer Brendan McDonald, “half of the show.” On this episode of The Wolf Den Brendan steps out of the producer's chair and in front of the microphone. He tells Jeff how his five-year relationship working with Marc at Air America turned into them creating WTF together, and how their successful collaboration relies on a shared vision. Brendan then shares how producing WTF means he had to become a businessman and entrepreneur, learning lessons along the way, like which responsibilities he should do himself and which are better to be outsourced. Make sure to watch the bonus video http://blog.themidroll.com/twd-55-bonus-video /) where Brendan reveals what he's most excited about in podcasting, his favorite podcasts, and what keeps him up at night.
