We like to hear stories of Ahavat Yisrael that inspire us, especially when they occur with regular every day people. The Skolener Rebbe was a great Sadik, whole we call a Poel Yeshuot, who brought about wonders, who lived in Boro Park. People would wait, late at night, in lines outside of his house to get blessings from him. I myself was zoche to go a few times. There was once a man on line who didn't quite fit in with the rest of the people in this Hasidic area of Boro Park. He was in jeans and a polo shirt. After some curious looks by the others in line, he finally got in to see the Rebbe and asked for a beracha for Refuah for “Shimon ben Leah.” The gabbai/ rabbis aid wondered about the name- it was his son's name. He thought maybe it was a coincidence, but on the man's way out, the gabbai decided to ask him whom the beracha was for. He explained that he was a counselor in Camp Simcha, a camp for children with a dreaded disease, which is a tremendous example of Ahavat Yisrael run by Rabbi Scholar and Chai Lifeline. It's an unbelievable Hesed machine. Shimon ben Leah was this man's camper. He wanted to give him a gift for his birthday, but he couldn't think of what to get him, a religious, Hasidic boy, that would make him happy. Then he thought of getting the boy a beracha from the Rebbe. So he waited on line to bring the boy a beracha . The gabbai burst out crying. He told the man that Shimon ben Leah was his son! This was a fellow that the people were looking at, wondering if he belongs or if he doesn't. But there is no belonging . It's just just two Jews loving each other, even if they don't know who they are. Just trying to spread Achdut . It's a beautiful story that shows that you never know what's what, or who's helping who. Have a wonderful day.
Sim Shain, Founder and CEO of ParaFlight EMS and Aviation, has led a remarkable 27-year career working in the pre-hospital emergency medical space. He is a noteworthy leader who takes on challenging responsibilities leading corporate, medical, and charity flights and missions specializing in organ transplants. As a volunteer paramedic, Sim's passion for facilitating surgical teams and harvested organs safely and efficiently to hospitals for procedures was born out of the atrocities of 9-11. A very close friend of Sim's was a philanthropist who had his own jet and outfitted it with a stretcher and oxygen ─ and sent Sim on missions. This same friend was near ground zero on 9-11 and was struck with cancer. Before he passed away, he urged Sim to carry on his dedication. Sim is surging forward with this endeavor in his memory. Sim's own experience driving an ambulance into ground zero on 9-11 has further fueled his mission for saving lives. He is on the official list of first responders and fortunately has not experienced any health issues thus far. Sim is a devoted volunteer who contributes towards numerous well-known organizations such as Chai Lifeline's Camp Simcha, United Hatzalah of Israel, The Special Children's Center, Birthright Israel, and providing Hatzolah EMS, in-flight medical support to children with cancer and disabilities, free of charge. ABOUT THIS EPISODE Rabbi Elimelech Goldberg was a young father when he received the call every parent dreads. His toddler daughter passed away a short time later. Years later, he found a profound way to channel his grief by directing Camp Simcha, a camp for children with cancer. In that role, he discovered that the marriage between martial arts and ailing children could be a transformational one, thus beginning the Kids Kicking Cancer revolution. Today deployed in dozens of locations around the world, the program - instructing people to "breathe in the light and breathe out the darkness" - has also been applied to military veterans suffering from PTSD, obese children and those with various other maladies. And in a unique but critical twist, the children come to see themselves as teachers and heroes, lighting up with the world as they practice the program principles and impart them to others. "Rabbi G" has poured his life into this fascinating mission, which continues to grow in many directions. What started out as a small summer camp for children with cancer has become a huge organization that provides emotional, social and financial support to these children and their families. Chai Lifeline offers year-round programming and the staff and volunteers never stop helping. Chai Lifeline provides meals, both in the hospitals and at home, big brothers/sisters for seriously ill children, family weekend retreats, trips, support groups, bereavement support, parties, financial guidance, after school help for siblings… the list goes on and on. One of the most spectacular aspects of the organization is Camp Simcha and Camp Simcha Special, where kids can go to a sleep away camp, which is essentially a hospital in disguise. Kids can get their treatments and feel like kids again, while parents get a much-needed break.
Rabbi G - Episode 42 No matter what you're facing in your life, you can breathe in the light and blow out the darkness. Today's episode of Martial Arts Radio is a bit different. You may have noticed that from the title - we haven't had a guest that uses a religious title over a martial arts one. However, today is special. We're joined by Rabbi Elimelech Goldberg who prefers to be called Rabbi G. We've mentioned the organization Kids Kicking Cancer on the show before, but this time we have the founder as our guest. Rabbi G is a martial artist, but he's taken his martial arts training in a very different direction. Rather than attempt to summarize his story, you should just listen. Rabbi G speaks at length about his past and the various occurrences that ultimately led to his founding of the Kids Kicking Cancer organization. Show Notes Book: A Perfect God Created an Imperfect World Perfectly: 30 Life Lessons from Kids Kicking Cancer The Pfizer / Jonas Brothers video that Rabbi G mentioned kidskickingcancer.org - The organization that Rabbi G founded You can find Rabbi G on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. He first provided a therapeutic martial arts program when he was the Director at Camp Simcha from 1990 to 2002. Having lost his first child to leukemia at 2 years old, Rabbi Goldberg brings his personal experience and sensitivity to dealing with children and families facing life-threatening illness. His commitment to ease the pain of very sick children and his dream of bringing healing through the empowering focus of the martial arts resulted in the creation of the Kids Kicking Cancer organization in June, 1999. Rabbi Goldberg was a recipient of the Robert Wood Johnson Community Health Leader's Award (2004) and the McCarty Cancer Foundation's Humanitarian of the Year Award (2004). He is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at Wayne State University School of Medicine. Rabbi Goldberg received his BA from Yeshiva University, summa cum laude.
