In this episode, I asked Rabbi Bergman for a bit of advice in what remains a consistently difficult part of Jewish life: davening. How can we get good at prayer? You may recall that Rabbi Aryeh Lebowitz gave us an excellent and useful bit of guidance in our very first episode. We are revisiting the question now and Rabbi Bergman gives us a bit of help that works not only in davening but, in fact, in a wide variety of challenging tasks. Take a few minutes to listen.Rabbi Sammy Bergman is the rabbi of the Young Israel of Fort Lee, a rebbe at TABC and Heichal HaTorah, and a good friend.

The teenage years can be a challenging time, both for kids and for parents...but there is a way to make things easier, and to actually create a great relationship with your teenager. Rebbetzin Shifra Fried, Empowerment Coach and the rebbetzin of Young Israel of Bedford Bay, in Brooklyn, New York, shares with us that the real work begins by us parents working on ourselves. We need to love and value OURSELVES, BEFORE we love and value our teenagers. The way that we think and feel about ourselves reflects in the way we treat others, especially our children. We need to take care of ourselves and show ourselves compassion. Most importantly, we need to recognize who we are, which leads us to the question, "Who are WE?" We are a divine piece of Hashem (G-d). We have a spark of divinity within us. When we recognize this divinity, this piece of G-d within ourselves, we begin to see it in others, including our children. When we learn to love and respect ourselves, we learn to love and respect our children. This is the turning point in our relationship with our teenagers. Rebbetzin Shifra encourages us to approach our children with a loving energy. Teens can read our energy, even if our words don't match the energy we are giving off. We can be really angry and still have a smile on our face, but our teens know that something is off. We need to be ok with dealing with our emotions privately, without judging our emotions. We need to feel whatever it is that we need to feel so that we can process our emotions and not repress them. Once we are able to regulate our emotions, we are in a much better position to be able to smile at our teenager warmly, while also radiating that warmth. We also need to listen to our children and acknowledge and validate their feelings. We need to hold back from fixing their issues, offering advice, saying "I told you so," and JUST LISTEN TO YOUR TEENAGER so that they feel heard and validated. If you have a teen that doesn't want to talk, remind them constantly that you love them and that you are always here for them. Even if they never talk to you about their challenges, feeling your love and them knowing that you love them makes a huge difference in their inner world. Our family was blessed with a new baby boy this past Sunday evening. With the help of the almighty, he will be joining the covenant of Abraham and receive his Bris tomorrow morning, Monday the 15th of January, in the Young Israel of Houston. In this special, celebratory podcast, I share what I said on Friday night during the Shalom Zachor that we held in our home. As is customary, we got together on the Friday night after the baby was born for an evening of festivities, food, and of course words of Torah. I spoke about the concept of the Shalom Zachor, about the nature of this custom, and share several fascinating and profound takeaways.– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –DONATE to TORCH: Please consider supporting the podcasts by making a donation to help fund our Jewish outreach and educational efforts at https://www.torchweb.org/support.php. Shemot | The Mystery Behind Moshe's Name, by Rav Yitzchak Etshalom Is "Moshe" a Hebrew name or an Egyptian name? We explore the first 10 verses of Shemot 2, detailing the birth of the baby who would prove to be the agent of salvation - his being hidden in the reeds of the Nile, the role of his sister and the princess in saving him and his naming. We review the passage carefully, noting each unusual twist in the text, including unexpected additions and surprising omissions from the story. Along with numerous methodological parenthetic observations, we analyze the Egyptian and/or Hebrew meaning of the name of this baby who ultimately leads Bnei Yisrael from Egypt to Sinai to the east banks of the Jordan. The Young Israel of West Hempstead burgeoned to a community of 750 families under the dynamic leadership of Rabbi Yehuda Kelemer of blessed memory. Referred to as the “Rabbi's Rabbi,” this title does no justice to the overwhelming impact that he had upon anyone he encountered. It wasn't charisma, and it certainly wasn't hip coolness; it was the rarest blend of mastery of every facet of Torah, exquisite sensitivity, and how a God-fearing individual must consistently conduct themselves. Anyone who required assistance, whether it was requested or not (usually the latter) was blessed by Rabbi Kelemer taking them under his wing, making them feel honorable and important. The Rabbi had a very liberal ‑ nigh incomprehensible ‑ interpretation of assistance. With never a thought for his personal comfort or dignity, no obstacle could prevent his treasured and cherished uplifting intervention. Because of his Torah scholarship recognized by the world's most prominent roshei yeshivah, dynamic leadership, and extraordinary care for everyone, the Young Israel of West Hempstead where he was the Mara D'asra swelled to a membership of 750 families. Young and old, disaffected youth, ardent secularists and yeshivah graduates revered Rabbi Kelemer and lovingly heeded his counsel. Listen to some of the amazing stories concerning one of this generation's most noble rabbis.

In this episode of the 18Forty Podcast, we talk to Rabbi Yosef Zvi Rimon, the esteemed Israeli posek, about the role of halacha during a war. Additionally, we are joined by Rabbi Shmuel Ismach, a rebbe at Yeshiva University and a rabbi at Young Israel of Great Neck. Amid the darkest and most chaotic times, we require the guidance of halacha even more than usual. And we see from Rabbi Rimon that halacha is not just a set of laws, but also the poetry that enables us to move forward. In this episode we discuss:What kinds of halachic questions does a rabbi need to answer when a war breaks out?Should a soldier donate a kidney during a war? Can a couple get married when people are dying? Should we really believe that God is with us when we're being attacked? What kinds of questions does Rabbi Yosef Zvi Rimon ask to the soldiers?Tune in to hear a conversation about the redemption we can find even when it seems out of reach. Rabbi Shmuel Ismach joins at 15:22.Interview with Rabbis Shmuel Ismach and Yosef Zvi Rimon begins at 23:13.Rav Yosef Zvi Rimon is a prolific author of Halachic books which reflect his unique approach, taking the reader from the sources to the practical application of Halacha in our modern reality. An extended treatment of this topic by Rabbi Broyde in a groundbreaking essay can be found here “For everything there is a season, and a time for every object of desire under the heavens. … A time to be silent and a time to speak. A time to love and a time to hate.A time for war and a time for peace” (Koheles-3:1 and 3:7-8).….. Indeed, there is a time to speak of war and of peace and a time when political and military considerations augur for silence…. determination of the halakhic propriety of any Israeli incursion is contingent both upon accurate analysis of points of fact as well as resolution of questions of Jewish law. Nevertheless, it is beyond dispute—both as a matter of fact and as a matter of Halakhah—that, once hostilities have commenced, Israel must prevail because the State of Israel cannot afford the luxury of losing a war. Military defeat would assuredly entail the loss of a countless number of Jewish lives. When such threat looms, military action assumes the guise of a “Milchemes Mitzvah” “to deliver Israel from the enemy”.Under such circumstances any action—indeed any word—that gives support to the enemy is an action that endangers Jewish lives…” Rabbi J.David Bleich Contemporary Halachic Problems Volume 3-Part 2-Chapter 11 The Issur Ben Tzvi Hersh Tshuvos and Poskim Shiur was honored to present one of the leading Jewish scholars of our day Rabbi Michael J.Broyde professor of law at Emory University School of Law senior fellow and projects director at the Center for the Study of Law and Religion who at this dark difficult time in our history discussed through a Torah and secular lens Milchemes Mitzvah The Intersections of Jewish Law, International Law and The Laws of War Rabbi Michael J. “ The reasoning of AI is unlikely to take the place of district court judges – those trial court judges who make factual determination based on the demeanor of the witnesses and so many more visible cues. So too, they are unlikely to replace Supreme Court judges, since much of the Justices do is decide when they ought to change the rules and replace one rule of interpretation with another – delegating this decision to a computer is no different than delegating the role of Congress to AI and is unlikely. On the other hand, the strengths of AI reasoning could take the place of United States Court of Appeals judges, who are (1) rigidly bound by precedent, (2) functionally interchangeable with each other, (3) randomly assigned to cases, (4) sit in panels, and (5) do almost all their work based on a written record. These five characteristics are more easily AI supplanted given the current state of technology that either policy decisions about the law ought to be or credibility determinations .” Michael Broyde The Issur Ben Tzvi Hersh Tshuvos and Poskim Shiur was honored to present a conversation with one of the leading Jewish scholars of our day Rabbi Michael J.Broyde professor of law at Emory University School of Law senior fellow and projects director at the Center for the Study of Law and Religion Using AI for Psak Halacha Ramifications and Recriminations Plus-Results of a Relevant Test Case Rabbi Michael J. Gita Lisker MD is board certified in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine and an associate professor in the department of medicine at Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell Health. She grew up in Queens, NY and graduated valedictorian from Stern College in 1995. She taught AP biology at Shevach during her gap year and then attended Einstein School of Medicine. She did her residency in internal medicine at LIJ in a shomer shabbos program followed by a fellowship in pulmonary/critical care at LIJ. After fellowship, Dr. Lisker was hired as an attending at LIJ/North Shore (which had merged at that point) where she works in both the inpatient and outpatient setting and has been there since. While originally, inpatient responsibilities included both ICU and pulmonary/RCU, Dr. Lisker eventually decided to stop working in the ICU for a more flexible work-life balance. During her time as attending, she has started and run several initiatives and units, including a Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) program at North Shore and a Respiratory Care Unit (RCU) at LIJ. At the start of the pandemic, she was in the unique position of being able to offer hospital-type pulmonary care in the outpatient setting, which was desperately needed. Thus, she founded the CROWN (Coronavirus Related Outpatient Work Navigators) Program, which used telehealth with pulmonary doctors, homecare RN visits, home 02, home IV infusions and blood draws, and the most up to date medical treatments to treat COVID patients at home. The program serviced nearly 4,000 patients. Dr. Lisker was also involved in the set up of the Shor Yoshuv site in Far Rockaway as a field hospital in March/April 2020 and joining it with Northwell Health. She also served as a medical advisor to SAR Academy and High School, Yeshiva Har Torah, and the Young Israel of Jamaica Estates during the pandemic. Her work during the pandemic led her to start a new initiative for Northwell, the HOME (Hospital Outpatient Management Experience), project to use what was learned from CROWN and COVID to treat other pulmonary diagnoses as well. Dr. Lisker met her husband, Jay, at camp Morasha when they were both 15, went through YU/Stern together as pre-meds, got married during a gap year and then attended Einstein medical school and LIJ internal medicine residency together. They currently live in Jamaica Estates where they are active members of their community and have three daughters, ages 12, 18 and 22 and a son in law! _______________________________________________________ Become a JOWMA Member! www.jowma.org Follow us on Instagram! www.instagram.com/JOWMA_org Follow us on Twitter! www.twitter.com/JOWMA_med Follow us on Facebook! https://www.facebook.com/JOWMAorg/ Stay up-to-date with JOWMA news! Rivka is an Israeli Haredi political administrator. Since 1999, she has worked for Israeli politician Reuven Rivlin, first as his bureau chief and campaign adviser, and, since his election as President of Israel in 2014, as his chief of staff. She has received extensive media coverage for being a frum mother of 12 in a high-profile political position. Ravitz considers her high-profile position an opportunity to display her religious commitment and make a Kiddush Hashem (sanctification of God's name). She wears modest clothing, and covers her hair with a wig. She does not fraternize with male colleagues or participate in "staff-consolidation days", and refrains from shaking hands when greeting men, in keeping with halacha. During Rivlin's 2015 visit to the Vatican, a photograph showing Pope Francis bowing to Ravitz. Despite it being a high profile visit, the Pope had bowed to her in respect of her religious resilience. During Rivlin's visit to the United States towards the end of his term, President Biden kneeled before Ravitz upon hearing that she is a mother of 12 children. She has incredible stories with Putin, Wonder Woman and other high profile kings, queens and leaders of the world. With his appointment as congregational rabbi of the Young Israel of Rugby in East Flatbush in 1947, Rav Avigdor Miller embarked on the most famous aspect of his storied career. He saw his role as rabbi primarily as a teacher of Torah, and he envisioned a community committed to Jewish observance and Torah study. To that end he focused on teaching Torah, engaging in the delivery of classes for beginners in Gemara and a myriad of other topics. With the demographics changing in East Flatbush in the early 1970's, Rav Miller took the unprecedented step of moving his entire congregation to Flatbush. In his later years his impact and influence exponentially increased beyond the confines of his congregation through the publication of his books, the increased attendance of his lectures - especially his Thursday night lecture - and the dissemination of his recorded lectures on cassette tapes. The Story of Rabbi Zev Leff - Moshav Matisyahu | Meaningful People #75 Rabbi Zev Leff is one of Israel's most popular Torah educators. He is the Rabbi of Moshav Matisyahu, a small religious community located in central Israel. Rabbi Leff was born in the Bronx, where he attended public school before his family relocated to Miami, where he enrolled in a conservative school before subsequently transferring to a yeshiva. He received semicha from the Telshe Yeshiva in Cleveland Ohio, where he studied under Rav Mordechai Gifter. He married Rivkah Minkoff of Ellenville, New York. During a Pesach visit to Miami, Rabbi Leff stepped in to help the Young Israel of Greater Miami in North Miami Beach with some speeches. His talks were received so well that after Pesach, he was invited to apply for the position of rabbi. During a Pesach visit to Miami, Rabbi Leff stepped in to help the Young Israel of Greater Miami in North Miami Beach with some speeches. His talks were received so well that after Pesach, he was invited to apply for the position of rabbi. In 1983, Fulfilling a life-long dream, he moved with his family to Eretz Yisrael, eventually settling in Moshav Matityahu. Today, in addition to his communal duties, Rabbi Leff is also Rosh Yeshivah of Yeshiva Gedolah Matisyahu, and oversees the Kollel on the Moshav. In addition to the shiurim he gives seven days a week at Matityahu, Rabbi Leff is constantly traveling to speak at schools, yeshivas, seminaries, and events throughout Israel and abroad. He has been a featured speaker at the conventions of the Orthodox Union, Agudas Yisrael, and Torah Umesorah. In November 2018, a Sky News video of Rabbi Leff engrossed in a sefer at a Scotland–Israel UEFA soccer game, oblivious to the excitement in the stadium after Israel scored its first goal, went viral. Rabbi Leff and his wife had been visiting their family and accompanied them to the game. As he personally had no interest in the match, Rabbi Leff brought his Gemara along to learn. The sight of the rabbi enjoying his sefer during the game made an indelible impression upon millions of people worldwide.
