A new three-part documentary series called “The Manhattan Alien Abduction” premiered on Netflix on Oct. 30 and it details the incredible true story of Linda Napolitano, who was abducted from her Manhattan apartment by extraterrestrials on Nov. 30, 1989. The event is notable because 23 witnesses saw Napolitano floating in the sky toward a hovering UFO. Late UFO researcher Budd Hopkins investigated the case for years, and it was the subject of his 1997 book, “Witnessed: The True Story of the Brooklyn Bridge Abduction.” However, Napolitano and the estate of the late Budd Hopkins filed a lawsuit on Monday for damages. The suit, among other things, claims Hopkins ex-wife, Carol Rainey, is featured prominently in the series although it was promised that she would not be a key player in it. Rainey, who divorced Hopkins in 2006, disparages both Napolitano and Hopkins in the series. CW: Sexual abuse When it comes to the alien abduction phenomenon, no two figures have played a greater roll in its shaping than Budd Hopkins and David Jacobs. And shaping, I think, is the perfect word, because, as we've covered on this series, before this point, abductions were very different animals. It was through Hopkins that it became an intergenerational phenomenon, that its captors all looked the same with slight variations, and that those captors were lying, deceiving assholes with an agenda that could be gleaned through hypnosis. Alien-human hybrids dominated the field because of Budd Hopkins. In short, the phenomenon that you know as alien abductions is the product of Budd Hopkins' research, and the proliferation of that research from other figures, like David Jacobs. In an interview with Ed Conroy, for his book Report on Communion, Whitley Strieber had this to say about Hopkins and Jacobs: "'He and Jacobs are censoring the experiences of people with visitor experiences in order to fit them into a theory they have about extraterrestrials,' Strieber told me in a December 1988 interview. 'If some of the experiences in people's lives don't fit with their theories, they just exclude them. In my books, I have maintained an account of the experiences which is very close to how strange and bizarre they really are. That is why my books have gotten such a tremendous response, while Intruders was a failure.'" Carol Rainey is a writer and filmmaker who has produced, written, and directed award-winning PBS and independent documentaries on medicine and science. She was awarded grant funding for fifteen documentary films from the National Institutes of Health. Once the films were complete, Rainey developed marketing and distribution strategies for the new products. Her narrative short film, “Momma Gets Her Ready,” won a National Endowment for the Arts Regional Fellowship and toured European museums with Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibits. Married to artist and UFO researcher Budd Hopkins from 1996 to 2006, Rainey co-authored with him the non-fiction book Sight Unseen: Science, UFOs and Transgenic Beings (Atria, 2003). In Sight Unseen, paranormal experience is used as an entrée into complex and startling breakthroughs in such fields as transgenics, bioengin-eering, neurobiology, and quantum physics. Rainey was a featured speaker at Cosmos and Consciousness VI, 2008; at the International UFO Congress, 2004; and has appeared in radio satellite tours on Westwood One and ABC Radio. She lives in Brooklyn, New York.
