There's some new data on teenagers and vaping that deserves our attention. Published in the journal Pediatrics, the data looks at trends in vaping behaviors among our eighth, tenth, and twelfth graders. Near daily vaping was admitted by one-point-seven percent of eighth graders, four-point-two percent of tenth graders, and almost eight percent of twelfth graders. When asked why they vape, the three top reasons are these: to relax and relieve stress was number one, cited by over seventy percent of those kids who vaped daily. Second on the list was experimentation, and coming in at third was vaping to relieve boredom. Other reasons cited include the taste, feeling good, convenience, and to have a good time. Parents, be aware that there are numerous health issues related to vaping. It is not safe. Take the time to raise your awareness of the consequences of vaping, warn your kids, and direct them to the Lord who promises to minister to them in their stress and anxiety.
I recently read a piece in the New York Times written by Callie Holterman. The headline read, “In candy shades and eggy shapes, many of today's most popular vaping devices look like toys. Experts worry they will hook a new generation of users.” After reading the article, I went online to look through one of the many online vape outlets that serve as clearinghouses for a host of vaping devices and supplies. I was greeted with everything Holterman's article discussed, along with four hundred and twenty different products from which to choose. I was invited to shop by brand or type, along with an option for shopping by flavor, with flavors listed being too long to mention here, but including things like Banana, Grape, Lush Ice, and Blue Razz. . . all designed to attract new young users. Parents, you need to know that vaping is not a safe alternative to smoking conventional cigarettes. They are addictive and dangerous. Teach your kids to steward their bodies to God's glory.

More than a decade after electronic cigarettes became broadly available in the United States, their merits are still being debated. Do these products help people quit smoking? How serious are the health risks associated with these products? In a two-part series, we hear from two researchers in tobacco control about their views. In part two, Stan Glantz, the Truth Initiative Distinguished Professor of Tobacco Control at the University of California San Francisco talks with Dr. Josh Sharfstein about his research into the harms of electronic cigarettes and the dangers of "dual use" of electronic cigarettes and traditional cigarettes. In an epilogue, Public Health On Call audio producer Matt Martin talks with Lindsay Smith Rogers about his personal history of tobacco use – including his efforts to quit with electronic cigarettes. There is a new alert on E-cigarettes
This week, we give Henry the day off, leaving Kate, Mark and Gary to discuss a new app to reduce unhealthy alcohol use, whether e-cigarettes can help you quit smoking, and whether taking stimulant meds for ADHD increases the risk of substance use down the road. And the quiz, and a book recommendation ("A Voyage for Madmen").
One of my sons is a high school physical education teacher. I recently asked him about his experiences with students and discipline over the course of the first couple of months of this school year. He reported that the students have been quite easy to handle with the exception of one particular issue: vaping in the bathrooms. The latest research says that over two-and a half million youth here in the United States are currently vaping. One fifteen year old student from New Jersey recently told Yahoo life, “You walk into the bathroom and it smells like fruit and people are passing around a vape and asking people who look chill if they want a hit. Some sit on the floor, but most go into the stalls with their friends. Everyone does it.” Another student describes his bathrooms as being nothing but a cloud of fog in there. Parents, we need to prepare our kids to steward their God-given bodies. Warn them about the addictive nature of vaping and the associated health risks.
It's the largest study of its kind in the United States, which shows e-cigarettes are effective in helping smokers to quit—just don't call it "cessation." In many countries, making smoking cessation claims in advertising and marketing is illegal. And, for tobacco control researchers writing funding applications, investigating cessation is a non-starter. Government health agencies say the evidence to recommend e-cigarettes for smoking cessation is insufficient. But is this truly the case? Joining us today is the lead author of this ground-breaking study, tobacco control researcher Dr. Matthew Carpenter, professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Medical University of South Carolina and co-leader of the cancer control program at Hollings Cancer Center. Carpenter says, "No matter how we looked at it, those who got the e-cigarette product demonstrated greater abstinence and reduced harm compared to those who didn't." Nicotine, smoking, and vaping- did you know that cigarettes are the leading cause of preventable deaths? It's true. Despite public health efforts to promote abstinence, quitting nicotine can be a lot harder than it looks. The problem itself seems to have passed onto the new generation as well as they have their own version of cigarettes: the e-cigarette. In this podcast, I'll be discussing the harms that e-cigarettes produce and why you shouldn't ignore the evidence found in your patients.

Associate Professor Jamie Hartmann-Boyce and Dr Nicola Lindson discuss the emerging evidence in e-cigarette research and interview Dr Leonie Brose, King's College London. This podcast is a companion to the electronic cigarettes Cochrane living systematic review and shares the evidence from the monthly searches. In the October episode Jamie Hartmann-Boyce interviews Dr Leonie Brose, Reader in Addiction Education and Nicotine Research at King's College London. Leonie Brose talks about the findings of a randomised controlled trial carried out with Dr Markos Klonizakis and the team at Sheffield Hallam University on the medium- and longer-term cardiovascular effects of e-cigarettes in adults making a stop-smoking attempt. The study compared cardiovascular effects in smokers attempting to quit smoking using e-cigarettes with or without nicotine or prescription nicotine replacement therapy (NRT). The study concluded that smokers attempting to quit experienced positive cardiovascular impact after both a 3- and 6-month period. None of the groups (i.e., nicotine-containing and nicotine-free e-cigarettes or NRT) offered superior cardiovascular benefits to the others. https://doi.org/10.1186/s12916-022-02451-9 Dr Brose also discusses the findings of the report by the Office for Health Improvements and Disparities (OHID) on Nicotine vaping in England: 2022 evidence update summary. The report aims to summarise the evidence on vaping products and to inform policies and regulations. It is a large body of work with 16 chapters covering policy and regulation, vaping and youth and presents the evidence on biomarkers of exposure and biomarkers associated with cancer, respiratory, cardiovascular and other health outcomes. The report also has chapters on fires, poisons and explosions linked to ECs, heated tobacco products and perceptions of harm. The headline from the report was that vaping poses only a small fraction of the risk of smoking combustible cigarettes. Jamie and Nicola also bring us up to date with the literature search conducted in October 2022. The October search identified 1 new study (https://doi.org/10.1186/s12916-022-02451-9), 3 ongoing studies and 1 record linked to a previously identified study. We will include the studies we have found in future updates of the Cochrane review. I grew up in a day and age where commercials and ads trumpeting the joys of smoking tobacco were everywhere. News broadcasts and television shows often included the camera catching the smoky haze of cigarettes smoldering in ash trays or from a smoker's exhale. It wasn't until 1966 that the surgeon general's warnings first appeared on cigarette packages. In 1970, cigarette commercials were banned from tv and radio. Smoking was banned on domestic flights in 1988. We've come to understand that smoking is both addictive and dangerous. The latest numbers on teens and smoking from the annual Monitoring the Future Survey found that youth cigarette smoking dropped to record lows, with 4.1% of high school seniors reporting cigarette use in the past month. But vaping rates continue to be high, with almost 1 out of five high school seniors reporting vaping nicotine in the last month. Parents, educate your kids to the dangers of smoking and vaping.

As the vaping epidemic continues in Minnesota, we bring you a preview of our upcoming video documentary: stories from the people on the front lines of this fight against big tobacco. The 2019 Minnesota Student Survey found more than a quarter of Minnesota 11th-graders and 11 percent of 8th-graders used an e-cigarette in the past month. From 2016-2019, the 8th-grade vaping rate nearly doubled. The commercial tobacco industry uses flavors to attract these kids. Two thirds of current high-school tobacco users in Minnesota reported using a flavored product. The deliberate marketing tactics used by the tobacco industry have made vaping popular among youth. The Minnesota Student Survey also found that Eighty-eight percent of Minnesota high-school students are exposed to e-cigarette ads. Investigations have revealed e-cigarette maker JUUL targeted kids as young as eight with marketing including a summer camp, school programs and social media influencers. The state of Minnesota has sued JUUL Labs for illegally advertising to youth and engaging in deceptive practices. Flavored tobacco products are driving the youth nicotine epidemic, which has erased nearly two decades of progress to reduce youth tobacco use. The alarming rise of youth vaping goes hand-in-hand with the insidious impact of predatory marketing the commercial tobacco industry has targeted at marginalized communities – including African Americans, American Indians, and LGBTQ people. In the podcast we'll hear from Laura Smith, Senior Public Affairs Manager at ClearWay Minnesota. Will Gitler and Claire Hering share their personal experiences with vaping. These experiences led them to join local action and advocacy work to reverse this epidemic and protect the health of all Minnesotans. Watch for more on vaping epidemic in our upcoming documentary, where we continue with these conversations. We'll also explore how vaping is impacting Native American youth from the Lower Sioux Indian Community and how tribal leaders are addressing the problem. We'll learn more about the serious health impacts of vaping from Dr. Brook Moore, a pediatric pulmonologist at Children's Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota.

Is the FDA putting e-cigs and vapor products out of business? Yesterday, the FDA's “Deeming Rules” took effect. The rules will force e-cig manufacturers to undergo an expensive and time-consuming approval process unless their products were on the market — or very similar to products on the market — prior to the “predicate date” of February 15, 2007, long before modern e-cigs were introduced. If e-cigs are helping people quit harmful tobacco cigarettes, why is the FDA doing this? How will this impact the industry? Evan is joined by Lori Sanders and Caroline Kitchens of the R Street Institute. For more, check out their event on harm reduction.
