Two remarkable young women are showing what's possible when friendship and fierce determination go hand in hand. Highland Park High School's 2025 Valedictorian Anna Q and Salutatorian Lakshmi Vemula first met at a spelling bee in fifth grade—and instead of becoming rivals, they became lifelong friends. From that moment on, they've supported and celebrated each other every step of the way.In this uplifting episode of The Bubble Lounge, Anna and Lakshmi open up about what it really takes to succeed at the highest level—without losing your joy, your sanity, or your social life. They talk candidly about balancing advanced classes with Friday night football games, leadership roles like Homecoming Queen and Drum Major, and why mutual encouragement between women can make all the difference.Their journey is a powerful reminder that success doesn't have to be cutthroat—and that two young women can rise to the top together, lifting each other up in the process. As they head off to Yale and Brown, their advice to younger students is refreshingly grounded: work hard, take care of your mental health, and lean into the friendships that fuel you. This episode is a celebration of academic excellence, personal growth, and the kind of female friendship that inspires us all. Tune in—and don't forget to share it with others who could use a reminder to always surround yourself with positive people who support you! This episode is sponsored by: Kathy L Wall State Farm Agency Long Cove, Mother Modern Plumbing and SA Oral Surgeons Please show your support for the show by visiting our amazing sponsors.

In concert with Martin Luther King Jr. Day Monday, the oldest black church in the Merrimack Valley this Saturday offers its third annual celebration of the life and legacy of the slain civil rights leader.Haverhill's Calvary Baptist Church holds “Sounds of a Movement,” featuring music, history, services and the awarding of the Drum Major for Justice award to Dennis D. Everett Jr. Rev. Kenneth Young of Calvary Baptist Church, who recently appeared on WHAV's “Win for Breakfast” program, says Everett is being honored for his work in prison reform, youth empowerment and restorative justice.“The award is someone who is doing either social justice work in the community or racial justice working in the community. Trying to uplift people living in the margins. We know that Dennis has work not only in Haverhill but in the Merrimack Valley for some time and we appreciate the work that he has done, and wanted to highlight the things that he's doing and make sure he knows that someone is appreciative of the work that he's doing.”Young notes the afternoon program involves singers Christina DeVaughn, who has a master's in opera performance from the Boston Conservatory, gospel singer Kylisha Farris and actress Remani Lazana.“One thing you're going to hear about is Mahalia Jackson—someone who not only he collaborated with, but she collaborated with him. When you hear ‘I have a dream,' speech she's the one you hear in the background who yells out to him ‘tell them about the dream,' and then he starts the repetition of ‘I have a dream today.' So, we want to highlight her in the songs they were singing and those who were participating, whether they were younger or were older. That's the theme for this year,” he adds.“Sounds of a Movement” takes place this Saturday, Jan. 18, opening at 2:30 p.m. and program at 3, at Calvary Baptist Church, at 13 Ashland St., Haverhill. An offering will take place with proceeds going to the Church's scholarship fund and outreach program.Support the show

Renaissance person? Or just casting her net really wide?   A chat about a beginner-band teaching strategy which Ms. Stinson piloted at her East Windsor (Connecticut) teaching gig, which she calls “Culture Before Technique”.   STINSON BIO: Zoe Stinson is a music educator and instrumentalist originally from the Capitol Region of New York, and currently teaches grade 5-8 Band, Chorus, and General Music at East Windsor (CT) Middle School. Zoe grew up studying saxophone, cello, and voice, but always gravitated towards saxophone. In 2016, Zoe was selected to perform at NYSSMA Conference All-State, and to perform in the International Performance Series at Carnegie Hall. Zoe furthered her saxophone studies at Eastman, Crane, Hartt, and University of Oklahoma summer programs throughout high school and college, and has performed in masterclasses for virtuosos such as Arno Bornkamp, Chien-Kwan Lin, and Christopher Creviston. In 2017, Zoe attended the University of Massachusetts Amherst for Saxophone Performance. While she studied at UMass, Zoe was heavily involved in numerous activities as a student musician. Zoe was initiated into Tau Beta Sigma, National Honorary Sorority for Collegiate Bands, and has since become a life member. Zoe performed in the University Wind Ensemble, Symphony Band, University Choral, Chapel Jazz Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble I, Marimba Bands, and the University of Massachusetts Minuteman Marching Band, for which she served as a Drum Major for two seasons. Aside from larger ensembles, Zoe was also associated with several notable chamber ensembles including the 4/4ths Saxophone Quartet, and the Rebel Saxophone Quartet, which traveled to Virginia for the Navy Band Saxophone Symposium in 2019 with their tour program. As a soloist, Zoe has performed multiple solo recitals and been invited as a guest performer at many others. Her most recent recital, “A Showcase of the Baritone Saxophone”, was performed entirely on the baritone saxophone in effort to legitimize the instrument in the classical medium. Zoe was also a concerto competition winner at UMass in Spring 2020 performing Rhapsody by Andre Waignein on the alto saxophone. Zoe has recently begun her professional career as a music educator, and is a member of the Gordon Institute for Music Learning. Specializing in instrumental instruction, Zoe applies Music Learning Theory in her classroom with a focus on ear training. Outside of the classroom, Zoe still enjoys playing her cello to this day, and plays baritone saxophone with recreational ensembles such as the “Salsa Train” salsa band in Springfield, and “The Onlys,” her fusion rock trio in New York. On the weekends, she occasionally likes to hop into the driver seat and drive for PVTA in Amherst, MA. “Prison reform is the attempt to improve conditions inside prisons, improve the effectiveness of a penal system, or implement alternatives to incarceration.[1] It also focuses on ensuring the reinstatement of those whose lives are impacted by crimes.[1] In modern times the idea of making living spaces safe and clean has spread from the civilian population to include prisons, on ethical grounds which honor that unsafe and unsanitary prisons violate constitutional (law) prohibitions against cruel and unusual punishment. In recent times prison reform ideas include greater access to legal counsel and family, conjugal visits, proactive security against violence, and implementing house arrest with assistive technology.” “Psychiatric hospitals, also known as mental health hospitals or behavioral health hospitals, are hospitals or wards specializing in the treatment of severe mental disorders, including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, eating disorders, dissociative identity disorder, major depressive disorder, and others. Psychiatric hospitals vary widely in their size and grading. Some psychiatric hospitals may specialize only in short-term or outpatient therapy for low-risk patients. Others specialize in the temporary or permanent confinement of patients who need routine assistance, treatment, or a specialized and controlled environment due to a patient's psychiatric disorder. Patients often choose voluntary commitment, but those who psychiatrists believe pose significant danger to themselves or others may be subject to involuntary commitment and involuntary treatment.[1][2] Psychiatric hospitals are sometimes referred to as psychiatric wards/units, psych, wards, or units when they are located in a hospital. Modern psychiatric hospitals evolved from and eventually replaced the older lunatic asylum. The treatment of inmates in early lunatic asylums was sometimes brutal and focused on containment and restraint.[3][4] With successive waves of reform, and the introduction of effective evidence-based treatments, most modern psychiatric hospitals emphasize treatment, usually including a combination of psychiatric medications and psychotherapy, that assist patients in functioning in the outside world. Many countries have prohibited the use of physical restraints on patients, which includes tying psychiatric patients to their beds for days or even months at a time,[5][6] though this practice still is periodically employed in India, Japan, and other countries.[7]” -Wikipedia. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/antonio-myers4/support

Jesus avoided the drum major instinct. Jesus consistently exemplified the message of humility. Even when his followers wanted him to make a stand and overthrow the government, his response was, my time has not come. Why, because the strongest strategy for progress and success, is humility and servitude.Support the showThanks for listening! Follow us on Facebook or Instagram more info colonialkc.org

The C.O.W.S. welcomes Dr. Bethan V. Jones. An independent scholar whose work examines the relationship between fans, objects of fandom, and producers, Dr. Jones has published extensively on digital media, gender, antifandom and toxicity. Her work has appeared in the Journal of Transformative Works and Culture, Participations, and Sexualities, as well as edited collections for Palgrave and Routledge. She's also a board member on the Fan Studies Network. We'll discuss her 2022 paper on the White fandom around the cowardly Columbine shooters. Apparently, the Colorado killers are big news across the pond too. We'll relate this to Dr. Jones' report on her trip to Atlanta, Georgia. She attended an academic conference and made time for the Walking Dead tour. We'll discuss the racial demographics of the folks on these tours and what they reveal about White culture. We'll also see if she stopped by the King Center to pay her respects to the “Drum Major for Justice.” We heard about Dr. Jones from our recent conversation with Dr. Judith Fathallah, who's also in Whales. It seems they are pals. Alabama: “Million Dollar Band”  Today I honor my father, Benjamin Colon  - otherwise known as Benny or Dad  Dad was the Drum Major at Dominguez High School, and he LOVED bands and music! A college marching band adds tradition, pomp and circumstance, fight song, the alma mater, and the memories of college football, basketball, and those crazy pep rallies. Alabama's marching band is known as “The Million Dollar Band”  My research led me to Alabama Alumnus, William Champ Pickens, who bestowed the name on the band after the 1922 football game against Georgia Tech. The Crimson Tide lost 33-7 to the Yellow Jackets. Atlanta sportswriter commented to Pickens, “You don't have much of a team, what do you have at Alabama?” To that, Champ proudly answered, “A Million Dollar Band.” And so the name stuck.  That was in 1922 – hard to believe Alabama ever had a losing season! You might know the name “Bear” Bryant. For 25 years, he coached the Alabama football team. Coach Bryant's collection of 323 collegiate wins includes 13 Conference Championships and 6 National Titles with the University of Alabama.  What I love about this legendary coach is this: he often gave the Million Dollar Band partial credit for the many football victories. What a true gentleman!  University of Alabama Large, public institution - With at total of over 32K students 7500 freshmen – that's big! To celebrate Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr's birthday Dr. Campbell explores Dr. King's “Drum Major Instinct” sermon he delivered on February 4, 1968 at Ebenezer Baptist Church. This sermon is an important lesson to understanding Dr. King's theory of service. He wanted us all to work to create a more just, democratic society and how his thoughts continue to resonate in contemporary struggles. Many of which we still battle today. As a reminder this episode is part of season 4 of the Dust + Dignity Podcast. A  special season entitled: Black Music's Roots in Social Justice Advocacy.  Dr. Campbell was one of 5 awardees of  CASAA's Inaugural Scholar-Advocate Program.  CASAA is the Center for Anti Racist Scholarship, Advocacy, and Action at Arcadia University.  This season will triangulate archival research, storytelling and strategies of Black music as a tool for change.

This episode will be very different from our previous ones. As many of you know by now, our Hawkeye Marching Band family lost one of our greatest legends, Dave Woodley, who passed away on the morning of May 21. He was an HMB member, Drum Major, Assistant Director, and the 9th Director of the University of Iowa Hawkeye Marching Band. Dave also led the marching bands at the University of Louisville and Indiana University during his career. The overarching theme of this podcast series – based on our visits with several guests who have spanned many periods of the HMB's modern era – is that HMB is family. At a time like this, we wanted to bring this family together to remember Dave, honor his accomplishments and talents and share stories and memories of him. As a family, we are heartbroken over his passing. He leaves a huge void in HMB lore, and we would be remiss if we didn't take time to show our appreciation, respect and love for Dave and his tireless work for this family. On this episode, we will be visiting with Dr. Eric Bush, Dr. Timothy Todd Anderson, and Arlene and Andy Houk who offer their thoughts and memories of Dave and what he meant to them and to the Hawkeye Marching Band. We close with a recording of "There Are Giants Among Us" by the Indiana University Wind Ensemble, conducted by Rodney Dorsey, and arranged by Dr. Timothy Mahr. It is our way of saying “thank you” to him for all he did for us.

LIVE: Lee Greenwood -- The Story Behind "God Bless The USA" LIVE: Lee Greenwood -- The Story Behind "God Bless The USA" Music has always been a part of Lee Greenwood's life. He started playing the piano when he was seven and the saxophone at 12. In junior high, he started his first group called the Moonbeams. His sister Patricia was the piano player in the band. By the time, he finished High School he played most all the instruments in the orchestra and was the Drum Major for the marching band.   Greenwood was born in Los Angeles California & finished high school in Sacramento in June 1960. He passed on track & music scholarships to the College of the Pacific along with a professional baseball career to pursue his passion for music. He also elected to skip his high school graduation ceremony to begin work at the Golden Hotel & Casino in Reno Nevada with his own band, the “Apollos”. That turned out to be a great choice. The California native was discovered in 1979 by Larry McFaden, who saw him performing in a show at the Nugget Casino in Sparks, Nevada. Larry was the bass player and bandleader for Mel Tillis. He brought the singer to Nashville and got him signed to the Halsey Agency, who booked The Oak Ridge Boys. He began working with producer Jerry Crutchfield who would record with Lee for the next 20 years.   “Choosing songs to record is always exciting,” says Greenwood. “I'm a songwriter as well and I love lyrics that have depth and emotion. I'm thankful for the many writers & artists who have contributed to my career”.   With seven #1 songs & 25 charted singles to his credit, choosing songs proved to be a success for Greenwood. His country hits include: “It Turns Me Inside Out”, “Ring On Her Finger Time On Her Hands”, ”She's Lying”, “I Don't Mind the Thorns If You're The Rose”, “Dixie Road”, “Somebody's Gonna Love You”, “Going Going Gone”, “You Got A Good Love Comin”, “Fools Gold”, and “Mornin Ride” while he already garnered several crossover hits such as “Touch & Go Crazy”, “IOU” and the duet with Barbara Mandrell, “To Me”.   Lee Greenwood has won numerous industry awards including, Male Vocalist of the Year from the Academy of Country Music in 1983, two Male Vocalist of the Year awards from the Country Music Association in 1983 & 1984 and a Grammy for Top Male Vocal Performance in 1985 for “I.O.U.”. The CMA also named “God Bless The U.S.A.” its Song of the Year in 1985.   “God Bless the USA” went far beyond what Greenwood expected when he wrote it in the back of his tour bus in 1983. The song has been in the top five on the country singles charts three times (1991, 2001 and 2003), giving it the distinction of being the only song in any genre of music to achieve that feat. It was also #1 on the pop charts after 9/11/01. In addition, CBS News voted “God Bless The U.S.A.” the most recognizable patriotic song in America. In 2011, Beyonce offered her version of “God Bless the U.S.A.” as a download, with the proceeds going to the 9/11 firefighters fund in NYC. It has been performed by contestants on “American Idol” twice & was the winning song in the 2011 “Dancing with the Stars” competition on ABC. It is performed at all military and patriotic events throughout the year all across America. “USA” has also been in several movies and is now part of the film shown by The Department of Homeland Security when new citizens are sworn in to the United States.   Greenwood says; “USA is the song I always felt the need to write. I wanted to have something that would unite Americans from coast to coast and to instill pride back in the United States. The song represents my family, my community and those men and women who have paid the price for the freedoms we all love and enjoy.” President George W. Bush appointed Greenwood to serve on the National Endowment of the Arts Council and his appointment was U.S. Senate approved. That Presidential Appointment continued under President Obama and still continues under President Trump.   In 2012, Greenwood released a children's illustrated book, “Does God Still Bless the U.S.A.,” and ranked #1 on many of the notable Best Sellers Lists. It features a 30 day calendar, “Prayers of a Patriot” and includes two songs, written by Greenwood, free for download in the back of the book. One is a new version of “God Bless the U.S.A.,” and the other is a Praise & Worship song, “Show Me The Way”.   Lee and his wife, Kimberly, a former Miss Tennessee, fell in love on his 1989 USO/DOD tour. They were married in Nashville in 1992 and have two sons, Dalton and Parker.   Lee's Website: https://leegreenwood.com/ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Help us fund the operation here: www.ToddCoconato.com/give Get up-to-the-minute news here: www.Remnant.News Download our new app at www.ToddCoconato.com/app Follow Pastor Todd here: www.toddcoconato.com/findme Go to our store for special deals for Remnant Warriors here: https://remnant.news/hanews/deals-for-remnant-warriors/
