Birds of prey have an interesting relationship to humans, having been both competing predators and avian companions for leisure pursuits. They've provided omens through the practice of augury, or divination by flight pattern. They appear in heraldic badges or become associated with deities in mythology. But they also have links with ordinary people who shared the landscape with these fascinating hunters. Who wouldn't be stunned by the speed of an osprey as it accelerates towards a lake, pulling free of the water with a huge fish in its talons? Or marvel at the flight prowess of a kestrel, hovering in mid-air even in the face of a gale? Let's find out more about the folklore of red kites, falcons, hawks, buzzards, ospreys, and shrikes in this week's episode of Fabulous Folklore! Today's show is a review and discussion of Scott Derrickson's coming-of-age horror thriller film, The Black Phone.Joe King is an American author better known by the pen name Joe Hill. He chose the pen name after not wanting to capitalize on his father's name, the legendary author Stephen King. Hill's first novel was a collection of short stories that was first published in October 2005 in the United Kingdom titled “20th Century Ghosts.” Saddled right in the middle of this collection is the 30-page short story called The Black Phone. Originally published in the Autumn 2004 edition of The Third Alternative, a quarterly published high production magazine that features cutting-edge speculative fiction, The Black Phone tells the story of child abduction by a man aptly called “The Grabber.” Trapped in a basement room, the boy's only hope lies in a mysterious disconnected black phone that hangs on the basement wall. When the phone rings, the child hears the whispers of the kidnapper's previous, and now dead, victims. Produced by horror powerhouse Blumhouse studios and distributed by Universal Pictures, Scott Derrickson's adaptation of this short story turned into a major motion picture leaned into his own middle school experience growing up in the 1970s in Denver, Colorado. The film incorporates many items from Derrickson's memory of that period, including the overcast skies, chain link fences, and the violence that existed for him inside and outside the home.In this show, we do more than a movie review by delving into the lives of the cast and crew, fan theories, trivia, scene breakdowns, and anything related to the film itself. Needless to say, our shows are a little longer than your average movie review show, but we can assure you that our shows are jam-packed with entertaining and interesting discussions. Joe Hill is more than just the son of horror icon Stephen King, and Scott Derrickson's adaptation of his short story helps showcase what makes him a powerhouse in his own right. In episode 235, Luke & James talk about how authors can approach writing taboos, what they might risk, exploring childhood trauma, Ethan Hawke's standout performance, catharsis through horror, and using True Crime as an inspiration. They end by casting their votes for what version is better: the short story or the movie! This week we went to see The Black Phone, starring Ethan Hawke and directed by Scott Derrickson, based on a Joe Hill short story (from the collection 20th Century Ghosts, if anyone wants to check it out.) Remember that scene in Jumanji when Robin Williams' legs can be seen sticking out of the ceiling from the floor below? That's what happened to Jonny as a result of the jump scares in The Black Phone. We also get a bit serious about stuff. I know, it's completely off brand and complaints can be posted in the complaints box. It's the big bowl filled with water in that small room over there. Seriously though, TRIGGER WARNING as we talk a bit about physical abuse of children, which this movie deals with quite a bit. ALSO - SPOILER ALERT!!! As usual, we have games, trivia and movie talk, it's all in this episode, so click on it and listen to it! Don't forget to like, review, rate and subscribe! This week, the boys go off script (thankfully) as they talk about Joe Hill's short story collection and make some obvious comparisons to his more famous father. While Hill is known for his comic strip LOCKE & KEY, and novels like HORNS and N0S4ATU, this short story collection shows why he's one of the true up-and-comers in the horror game. Pitting romance novels against each other just didn't prove to be enough of a battle for our bloodthirsty selves, so we came up with a different mix to throw into the ring: father versus son in the combination of Stephen King and his son, Joe King or as the literary world knows him, Joe Hill. You may remember him from an earlier episode as the author of a horror anthology, "21st Century Ghosts", which had mixed reviews from the group. This week, we decided to take each of their first full-length novels and see how they compared. For the "King of Horror" that ended up being "Carrie", so naturally we had to settle down with our blood orange cocktail, "The Favorite," and watch the movie as well. Joe Hill's first novel went by the name "Heart Shaped Box", and in what was deemed to be a purposeful break from his father's favorite book setting of Maine, our characters traveled up and down and around and across the South of the good old USA, blood and destruction following. Therefore, our Southern Spiked Peach Iced Tea helped to wash away the gore just a little bit. Listen on to find out who our favorite was!

You can tell from the state of the copy pictured that it's a favorite recipe in Carrie's family. For a less sweet pie, use 3/4 cup of sugar instead of a full cup. Carrie recommends Nellie & Joe's key lime juice, which you can usually find at Kroger. The pie is also great when served frozen. The kolaches mentioned in My Ántonia are still enjoyed in areas of the United States where Czech immigrants settled. Read more about the history of this Czech pastry and find a recipe on toriavey.com. Try the recipe from the website Caroline's Cooking for the Trinidadian snack Pineapple Chow. It's just like the dish Tommy Tester enjoyed at the Victoria Society. Try the Jabberwock cocktail from the Savoy Cocktail Book in honor of the Vorpal's Special that Tuesday Next orders in The Eyre Affair.
