This Week on Multiverse News! Between last weekend's New York Comic Con and the regular news cycle, this week has treated us to some tasty, and maybe not so tasty, Marvel morsels. The most substantial news impacting the MCU was the official March 4, 2025 release date for Daredevil: Born Again on Disney Plus and, per an exclusive with Collider, the Russos confirmed Avengers: Doomsday will begin filming next spring. Elsewhere, while speaking on the Rich Roll Podcast, Tom Holland chimed in with his excitement after having read the script for his upcoming, fourth Spider-Man film, saying that there were still things for the writers to figure out and work on, but that it is a real movie, worthy of the fans' respect. Finally, today Disney removed Blade, which was slated for November 7, 2025, from its release calendar. Taking a hard left turn, let's talk some DC, where James Gunn debuted the official trailer for Creature Commandos. During the Comic Con panel, cast and crew, including Gunn, executive producer Dean Lorey and Alan Tudyk to name a few, highlighted the animated series' mature, violent tone and Eastern European aesthetic, even comparing it to the TV show Lost; and cited how voices were cast with live action appearances and integration specifically considered. While celebrating the series' unique identity in the context of the DCU, Gunn of course couldn't miss the opportunity to provide minor updates for Peacemaker Season 2, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, Lanterns and Superman, promising, “It won't be too long before we see a trailer, but it also won't be too soon.” HBO's Dune: Prophecy treated fans with a new trailer and an official release date coming out of NYCC: the series will premiere Sunday, Nov. 17. The official logline for the series reads, “From the expansive universe of ‘Dune,' created by acclaimed author Frank Herbert, and 10,000 years before the ascension of Paul Atreides, ‘Dune: Prophecy' follows two Harkonnen sisters as they combat forces that threaten the future of humankind, and establish the fabled sect that will become known as the Bene Gesserit.” The season is made up of six episodes and will release on Sundays on HBO and Max. Netflix has released the official trailer for the Russo Brothers' upcoming sci fi action movie “The Electric State,” starring Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt. The film begins streaming on March 14th, 2025. Shrinking has been renewed for season 3 at AppleTV+. Josh Brolin and Lee Pace are currently in final negotiations to star opposite Glen Powell in The Running Man, Paramount's adaptation of the Stephen King novel. Both actors will portray villains in the film. Amazon MGM Studios is reportedly casting new leads in their 20s for Mr. and Mrs. Smith Season 2, with singer Billie Eilish among rumored contenders for the one-year roles of John and Jane. At New York Comic Con, AMC released the first trailer for Season 2 of Walking Dead: Dead City and announced that it will begin streaming sometime in the spring of 2025. Blumhouse showcased exclusive MEGAN 2.0 footage, with the killer doll teasing she's received an "upgrade" in a special NYCC message. With production complete, the sequel is set to release on June 27, 2025. Blumhouse also unveiled a new trailer for Leigh Whannel's The Wolfman starring Julia Garner and Christopher Abbott. Also during the Blumhouse NYCC panel, Director Mike Flanagan spoke about his new version of The Exorcist, which he considers "the scariest movie ever made." Beyond Flanagan expressing his excitement to tackle the iconic property, no additional details about the project were revealed at the NYCC panel. Following the success of the original film, director Scott Derrickson and writer C. Robert Cargill are returning for The Black Phone 2, bringing back Ethan Hawke and the original cast for what Derrickson describes as a "high school coming-of-age film" based on an idea from author Joe Hill.

“I like that you made the movies longer, they are better this way.”Scott Derrickson's nightmare after watching The Ring sparked the creation of Sinister, a chilling tale that taps into the growing fascination with true crime. Co-written with his frequent collaborator C. Robert Cargill, Derrickson's film follows a true crime writer who moves his family into a house with a brutal past, only to uncover a sinister supernatural force at work. Released in 2012, Sinister arrived just as the true crime craze was gaining momentum, with podcasts and television shows exploring the darker side of human nature. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we continue the 2013 Fangoria Chainsaw Awards Best Actor Nominees series with a conversation about Sinister.Ethan Hawke's Descent into DarknessIn Sinister, Ethan Hawke delivers a brooding and moody performance as a true crime writer determined to unravel the mystery behind a series of disturbing home movies. As he delves deeper into the investigation, Hawke's character becomes increasingly obsessed, putting his family in danger and blurring the lines between reality and the supernatural. We discuss how the film uses jump scares and horrific imagery to create a sense of dread and unease, keeping the audience on the edge of their seats.Haunted Houses and Demonic DeedsOne of the key points we explore in our discussion is how Sinister subverts the "haunted house" trope. Instead of the horror being confined to a single location, the film has the demon Bughuul's influence follow the family even after they leave the murder house. This raises questions about the logic of Bughuul's actions and whether the film needed to provide a clearer explanation for his behavior. We debate the effectiveness of this approach and how it contributes to the overall sense of unease that permeates the film.Sinister Sounds and Creepy KidsThe film's effective use of sound design and lighting to create a creepy atmosphereThe unsettling portrayal of the ghost children and their role in the murdersThe challenges of working with child actors in horror films and how Sinister handles their creepy scenesThe Verdict on SinisterSinister is a film that effectively taps into the growing fascination with true crime and delivers a creepy and unsettling horror experience. While the logic of Buhguul's actions may not hold up under scrutiny, the film's strong atmosphere, effective scares, and thought-provoking themes make it a standout entry in the horror genre. We have a great time discussing the film's strengths and weaknesses, so check it out and then tune in to hear our full conversation. On The Head of the Serpent 1987).
In this week's episode of The Discourse, host Mike DeAngelo pops in a tape to discuss “V/H/S/85” with director Scott Derrickson (“Doctor Strange,” “Sinister,” “The Black Phone”). The sixth installment of the beloved horror anthology series follows five sinister found footage tales that delve into the grim underbelly of 1980s America. The film stars James Ransone, Freddie Rodriguez, Jordan Belfi, Dashiell Derrickson, and more. During the interview, the modern horror master discussed joining the V/H/S franchise through his wife, Maggie Levin, who had done a short for “V/H/S/99.” Derrickson also spoke about leaving Marvel's 'Doctor Strange 2' over creative differences and 'Ghost Rider.' --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/theplaylist/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/theplaylist/support

Today's show is a review and discussion of Scott Derrickson's coming-of-age horror thriller film, The Black Phone.Joe King is an American author better known by the pen name Joe Hill. He chose the pen name after not wanting to capitalize on his father's name, the legendary author Stephen King. Hill's first novel was a collection of short stories that was first published in October 2005 in the United Kingdom titled “20th Century Ghosts.” Saddled right in the middle of this collection is the 30-page short story called The Black Phone. Originally published in the Autumn 2004 edition of The Third Alternative, a quarterly published high production magazine that features cutting-edge speculative fiction, The Black Phone tells the story of child abduction by a man aptly called “The Grabber.” Trapped in a basement room, the boy's only hope lies in a mysterious disconnected black phone that hangs on the basement wall. When the phone rings, the child hears the whispers of the kidnapper's previous, and now dead, victims. Produced by horror powerhouse Blumhouse studios and distributed by Universal Pictures, Scott Derrickson's adaptation of this short story turned into a major motion picture leaned into his own middle school experience growing up in the 1970s in Denver, Colorado. The film incorporates many items from Derrickson's memory of that period, including the overcast skies, chain link fences, and the violence that existed for him inside and outside the home.In this show, we do more than a movie review by delving into the lives of the cast and crew, fan theories, trivia, scene breakdowns, and anything related to the film itself. HAPPY HALLOWEEN THE DEVIL MADE ME DO IT: For the annual Pop Art Halloween Show, join me and my guest, teacher by day, horror aficionado by night, Lisa Leaheey, as we discuss two films about exorcisms, The Exorcism of Emily Rose and Requiem, both films based on the same real life incident. “Crazy people don't know they're crazy” You have a friend. They seem fine, normal, just like the next person. Then, suddenly, they start having fits. They start hearing and seeing things. They speak in foreign languages. Is it epilepsy? Is it schizophrenia? Or is it, could it be, maybe it's…Sounds like it's time for Episode 87 of Pop Art, where we find the pop culture in art and the art in pop culture. It's the podcast where my guest chooses a movie from popular culture, and I'll select a film from the more art/classic/indie side of cinema with a connection to it. For this episode, I am happy to welcome back as my guest, teacher by day, horror aficionado by night, Lisa Leaheey, who has chosen as her selection The Exorcism of Emily Rose, while I have chosen the German film Requiem, both films, not just about exorcisms, but about exorcisms based on the same real life incident. Lisa has been my guest twice before. So be sure to check out Episode 59 where we talked Memento and Spellbound, and her first time on for Halloween, Episode 67, where we talked Hell House, LLC and Man Bites Dog. And in this episode, we answer such questions as: Who did Jennifer Carpenter's contortions? Who is a fan of Deep Purple? Why did Derrickson choose Boardman to help write …Emily Rose? What's a Lola and would you want to be one? What urban legend has sprung up relating to …Emily Rose? What is true horror? Who are Campbell Scott's parents? What is it about exorcisms anyway? What is the coincidence behind Carpenter being cast? Why are there no MRIs in the two movies? The film incorporates many items from Derrickson's memory of that period, including the overcast skies, chain link fences, and the violence that existed for him inside and outside the home. In this show, we do more than a movie review by delving into the lives of the cast and crew, fan theories, trivia, scene breakdowns, and anything related to the film itself. Needless to say, our shows are a little longer than your average movie review show, but we can assure you that our shows are jam-packed with entertaining and interesting discussions. From the ashes of a Raimi-less Doctor Strange sequel from another multiverse comes Scott Derrickson and C. Robert Cargill's exemplary adaptation of Joe Hill's THE BLACK PHONE, which gifts us a new horror icon in Ethan Hawke's THE GRABBER and some of the best child performances since IT! Cody and Mike ring up some ghosts themselves to dive into the 70s trappings, heady themes, the ways Derrickson and Cargill expand and improve the short tale, and for some reason debate whether or not the LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT remake should have included the chainsaw massacre or not.Pick up that damn phone, you naughty boy, and download the episode now!Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/BoxOfficePulpPodcast/Twitter: https://twitter.com/BoxOfficePulpApple Podcasts: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/box-office-pulp/id577338641Amazon Podcasts: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/7c11ff8b-2875-454d-8770-8b1d36d04b52Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/534ZPRmDoZzNs5GtiAhOEcStitcher: http://www.stitcher.com/s?fid=37192&refid=stpr
Chris and Taylor review the supernatural horror film "The Black Phone" written by Scott Derrickson and C. Robert Cargill with direction by Derrickson. An abducted teenager uses a mysterious telephone to communicate with the former victims of his captor. The film stars Mason Thames, Madeleine McGraw, Ethan Hawke, Jeremy Davies, E. Roger Mitchell, Troy Rudeseal and James Ransone.
In honor of the show's 10th episode, Lee & Jenna discuss two of their favorite flicks from the last decade: the psychological horror/thriller Sinister from 2012 and the 2021 adaptation of Joe Hill's short story of the same name, The Black Phone. Both movies were created using the same winning formula: they both starred Ethan Hawke and were both produced by Jason Blum, directed by Scott Derrickson, and written by dream team C. Robert Cargill and Scott Derrickson. If you enjoyed this episode, please leave us a review on Apple, Spotify, or wherever you listen to your podcasts! It truly does help & means the world!
This week, we discuss one of the most hyped and anticipated horror movies of the year, Scott Derrickson's The Black Phone. 10 years ago, Derrickson and frequent collaborator C. Robert Cargill terrorized us with snuff films and Bughuul in Sinister, a film that science has deemed "the scariest movie ever." Now, their new film, The Black Phone, aims to recapture that magic with Ethan Hawke once again. Does it succeed? Tune in and find out!
Almost twenty years ago, director Scott Derrickson was in a book store when a story by Joe Hill captivated him to the point where he KNEW he had to be the one to adapt it. But as his career caught fire with fare like Sinister and the huge Marvel film Dr Strange, it was becoming more and more clear that Derrickson was not going to have time to do the project that was so close to his heart...

When are people going to learn? When you see a creepy van with no windows you run as fast as you can the other way! That's part of the creepy, suspenseful plot of Scott Derrickson's The Black Phone starring Ethan Hawke. Derrickson directed the first Dr. Strange movie but has also mostly directed horror films like Sinister and The Exorcism Of Emily Rose and he sort of returns to that with this movie. Hawke plays a psychotic child abductor in the late 1970s in this but listen to this spoiler-free review to hear more about the plot and whether you should see it or run as fast as you can the other way. Alright, this is the big one, arguably the next most anticipated major movie event after the Batman. Marvel returns in two forms, first in the television format with Moon Knight, and now it's back to the movies with the much anticipated sequel to 6 previous MCU properties, Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness! This film functions as a sequel to Dr. Strange, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, Wandavision & Spider-Man: No Way Home, as we follow the titular Doctor dealing with a multiversal threat when he finds himself having to protect a young girl with the ability to traverse the multiverse from Wanda Maximoff, who is hell bent on using her powers to bring back her children from another universe. In addition to Benedict Cumberbatch & Elizabeth Olsen reprising their roles as Dr. Strange and the Scarlett Witch, the film also sees the return of Benedict Wong, Rachel McAdams & Chiwetel Ejiofor, as well as newcomer Xochitl Gomez as America Chavez. Doctor Strange director and co-writer Scott Derrickson had plans for a sequel by October 2016. He signed to return as director in December 2018, when Cumberbatch was confirmed to return. The film's title was announced in July 2019 along with Olsen's involvement, while Jade Halley Bartlett was hired to write the film that October. Derrickson stepped down as director in January 2020, citing creative differences, with Loki showrunner Michael Waldron and Sam Raimi joining the next month and starting over. Filming began in November 2020 in London but was put on hold in January 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Dom & Chris sit down with Matt of Basic Entertainment and Luk Reviews to discuss whether this film lived up to the hype or was yet another Marvel misfire. Let's get strange, baby - today's episode of the Movie Quest podcast focuses on 2016's Doctor Strange! I'm not sure whether I'm shocked or not, but (SPOILER) this was Julianne's favorite MCU film so far, and she rated it an astounding 9.5 Cummerbunds! In addition to this rating, Julianne and I ask critical questions like: Was Joaquin Phoenix almost cast ad Dr. Strange? Was the role of The Ancient One whitewashed when they cast Tilda Swinton? What's the deal with Stephen and Christine? What is the Mirror World? Is Dormammu a dragon? It would seem that Julianne's only criticism of the film is that they didn't show Dr. Strange bargaining with Dormammu enough - Apparently she wanted truly endless loops. YA HEAR THAT, DERRICKSON!?!? We are SO CLOSE to wrapping up Phase 3 of the MCU - next up in our series is one of my all-time favorites: Taikia Waititi's Thor: Ragnarok. A nightmare after watching ‘The Ring’ inspired writer Christopher Robert Cargill to pen his own screenplay following visions in his head that he once found a film in his attic that contained disturbing footage of an entirely family being hanged. Eventually he teamed up with writer and director Scott Derrickson to flesh out the idea of a demonic creature, who lured children into his wicked web and an evil being later known as Mr. Boogie was finally born. Cargill and Derrickson finished a script that centered around a true crime writer named Ellison Oswalt, who finds a box of Super 8 films stashed in the attic of his new home that brings him closer to a set of gruesome murders than he could ever possibly imagine. The film became a breakout hit for a new studio called Blumhouse that was dedicated to featuring new voices in horror. A scientific study was then conducted in 2020 that sought to find the scariest movie in history with viewers hooked up to heart rate monitors to find out what truly terrified them. In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we’re going to pour ourselves some whiskey, turn on the projector and talk about what is now called the scariest movie of all time, the 2012 film “Sinister”…

I take a look back at Guardians of the Galaxy as part of my Marvel Movie watch through. But first we have more Disney+ show news, and some rumors for Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness
On this episode of Next Level Minds I had the opportunity to sit down with Bryan Derrickson, the Founder of BDVibez—a company that lives with passion and purpose, spreading positive “vibez” through hats. Bryan has an amazing story of turning a very tragic situation into a company that has impacted thousands of people. Him and I chat about mental health, depression, positivity, and how to grow in your sufferings. Check out the BD Vibez website here: https://bdvibez.com/ Bryan’s Instagram: @bdvibez
There's a bunch of backlog of news that I have to run down quickly for you. Plus, for the main topic, I talk about an old Iron Man villain who has already been hinted at in the MCU, the Mandarin.
New trailers, new movie news, and new Doctor Who! 00:49 – Let's talk trailers! We start off with MYTHIC QUEST: RAVEN'S BANQUET, a TV show on a video game company head with an oversized ego, who bases a game's hero on himself. 02:59 – The next one is a spin-off. PENNY DREADFUL: CITY OF ANGELS will be dropping on us soon. Brian recalls that the original was fun but got “lost” towards the end. 05:05 – And then there's a Vin Diesel movie BLOODSHOT where nano-McGuffins make him an indestructible assassin whose memories are being manipulated by secret government agents. Interesting premise, although it feels like Vin has played this before. 08:37 – We also got another BLACK WIDOW trailer where the Taskmaster makes a more substantial appearance. Brian and Mandy discuss the Easter-eggs in the trailer. 09:53 – NEW MUTANTS will be coming out on February 7th. This one has long been in production and nobody expected it to make it to release, but here we are. 12:31 – MORBIUS also made a splash with Jared Leto back on the screen playing a super-powered vampire. There are references galore to spider-man, but fans are conflicted about which spider-verse the movie plans to be in. 14:45 – The unfortunate earthquake in Puerto Rico has indefinitely halted the production of FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLDIER. So, fans of the characters won't be seeing them on Disney + any time soon. 15:35 – In other Marvel news, Director Scott Derrickson has left the production of DOCTOR STRANGE: MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS. Brian brings up Derrickson's past tweets as we try to understand why he might be leaving. 21:29 – Brian's predictions about ENDGAME receiving the Oscar nod was for naught. Instead, the JOKER bagged 11 nominations, while ENDGAME had to make do with 1. However, we are very excited by THE IRISHMAN and THE MARRIAGE STORY getting Netflix a whopping 24 nominations. 26:21 – Scarlet Johansson was nominated for two movies this year – THE MARRIAGE STORY and JOJO RABBIT. We're hoping this is the beginning of streaming platforms bringing new stories into Hollywood. 28:04 – Build-A-Bear will soon be making a killing from Baby Yoda toys. They also just signed a contract with BBC to bring you adorable teddy versions of your favorite Doctors. 30:13 – Finally, we discuss (with spoilers) the third episode of DOCTOR WHO – Orphan 55.
