This week on The Whiskey Trip Podcast, Big Chief heads to Newport News, Virginia and visits with Owen King, co-founder, co-owner and Master Distiller of Ironclad Distillery. They chat about the historic naval battle between the two Ironclad Warships that would change the way ships were built and the fact that American sailors preferred drinking whiskey instead of rum. Big Chief and Owen enjoy a blueberry mead cask finished bourbon and a bottled in bond bourbon for the first half. Then, for the second half the big man and Owen sip on a four grain Betrayal Rye that Owen kept hidden from his sister and father. They finish off the show with an amazing glass of The Old Kernel Straight Bourbon Whiskey made with Pungo Creek Mills heirloom Indian corn from the Eastern Shore of Virginia. This whiskey blows Big Chief's palate out the the water just like one of the old ironclads. This ride on The Whiskey Trip will have you hunting for a bottle from Ironclad once you hear Big Chief's excitement. Cheers!

Military Historians are People, Too! A Podcast with Brian & Bill
Today's guest is David Morgan-Owen. Dave is a Reader in the History of War in the Defence Studies Department at King's College, London. From 2019-2021, he served as Academic Programme Director for the Intermediate Command and Staff Course (Land) and the MA in Military and Security Studies. He received all of his degrees from the University of Exeter and has a park bench on campus named in his honor after having spent so many years there (not really, but we could start a campaign?). He has held fellowships at the Modern War Institute at West Point, the National Museum of the Royal Navy, and the National Maritime Museum. Dave is a fellow of the Royal Historical Society and the Higher Education Academy. In 2016, he won the Julian Corbett Prize in Modern Naval History. Dave's first book The Fear of Invasion: Strategy, Politics, and British War Planning, 1880-1914 (Oxford) was awarded the Templer Medal for best first book from the Society for Army Historical Research in 2017. In 2020, he co-edited with Louis Halewood Economic Warfare and the Sea: Grand Strategies for Maritime Powers (Liverpool). Dave's articles have appeared in the English Historical Review, The Journal of Modern History, War in History, and War & Society, among others. His current project examines how the First World War challenged ideas of Britain as a ‘sea power', and what these discussions meant for the prosecution of the conflict. Dave's greatest accomplishment, however, is having convinced Season I guest Aimée Fox to become his partner, and along with Aimée is one of MHPT UK Podcast Dog Freddie's Human Feeding Units. Join us for an interesting and fun chat with David Morgan-Owen. We'll talk about rolling cannonballs on HMS Victory, being Jeremy Black's chauffeur, having tea with Sir Michael Howard, Riddle in the Sands, and Oasis, as well as some good military history. Check it out! Rec.: 02/17/2023

From Sunday Times bestselling author Owen King comes a Dickensian fantasy of illusion and charm where cats are revered as religious figures, thieves are noble, scholars are revolutionaries, and conjurers the most wonderful criminals. At first glance, the world has not changed: the trams on the boulevards, the grand hotels, the cafes abuzz with conversation. The street kids still play on the two great bridges that divide the city, and the smart set still venture down to the Morgue Ship for an evening's entertainment. Yet it only takes a spark to ignite a revolution. For young Dora, a maid at the university, the moment brings liberation. She finds herself walking out with one of the student radicals, Robert, free to investigate what her brother Ambrose may have seen at the Institute for Psykical Research before he died. But it is another establishment that Dora is given to look after, The Museum of the Worker. This strange, forgotten edifice is occupied by waxwork tableaux of miners, nurses, shopkeepers and other disturbingly lifelike figures. As the revolution and counter-revolution outside unleash forces of love, betrayal, magic and terrifying darkness, Dora's search for the truth behind a mystery that she has long concealed will unravel a monstrous conspiracy and bring her to the very edge of worlds. In The Curator, Owen King has created an extraordinary time and place - historical, fantastical, yet compellingly real, and a heroine who is courageous, curious and utterly memorable.

Popa HALLics #90 "From Dickens to Dictators"Just in time for the holidays comes a new high-spirited, self-aware musical that reimagines Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol" from the ghosts' perspective. Meanwhile, Kate is fascinated by a podcast that explores the origin stories of "the worst humans in history." First up: Hitler. Steaming:"Spirited," Apple TV +. Will Ferrell and Ryan Reynolds sing and even tapdance as the Ghost of Christmas Present (Ferrell ) tries to convince an "unredeemable" PR sleazeball (Reynolds) to change his ways. With Octavia Spencer."The Crown," Netflix. Season 5 finds the royal family struggling to show their relevance in the 1990s, as Prince Charles and Princess Diana spar in the media. Imelda Staunton now plays Queen Elizabeth, Elizabeth Debicki is Princess Di, and Dominic West is Charles. "Andor," Disney +. The most grown-up, complex, nuanced "Star Wars" offering yet traces how a roguish thief (Diego Luna) eventually becomes a hero willing to lay his life on the line for the Rebellion. "House of The Dragon," HBO Max. This worthy prequel to "Game of Thrones" features intrigue, sex, and dragons during the reign of House Targaryen.Podcast:"Behind the Bastards." This podcast delves into the bizarre stories of history's greatest real-life villains, from Hitler forming his monstrous ideology from young adult novels to Saddam Hussein's side gig as a trashy romance novelist. Books::"The Death of Jane Lawrence," by Caitlin Starling. In this acclaimed Gothic horror novel, a young woman's marriage of convenience turns creepy when her new husband forbids her to visit his family estate—and she does."Jade City," by Fonda Lee. This clever mix of "Godfather"-style gang intrigue and fantasy finds clans in an Asian-like nation struggling for power. Contact with jade makes them faster, stronger, more alert—but can also drive them crazy."Sleeping Beauties," by Stephen and Owen King. This page turner asks the question: What would happen to the world if women disappeared from it? Women begin falling asleep, a weird cocoon covering their heads, and not waking up. The men left alone turn to violence. ...Music:The "Spirited" soundtrack got us thinking about all the other holiday musicals we love. Popahallics #90 Playlist contains gems from "A Muppet Christmas Carol," "Elf," "Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer," and more—including "Spirited." Listen to it here.

This week we're visiting a new state for the podcast - Virginia. When it comes to Virginia distilleries, you'll probably think of A. Smith Bowman or Mount Vernon first, but Ironclad should be your next visit. Owen King, distiller and son of the distillery's founder, is playing with corn and mashbills the same way Middle West, Mammoth, and other innovators are exploring. Some of it isn't ready for market - he's dedicated to at least four years in the barrel, then however long is needed afterwards - but some of it is, like the Monitor Blend and Old Kernel. Then there's the finishes - if you find a Petit Verdot, shout me out immediately - and the story itself. Newport News, VA is home to aircraft carriers and a huge US Navy presence, plus the story of the Monitor itself. Owen is passionate about making the best and most creative whiskey in Virginia - and he just might be succeeding. _________________ Before we jump into the interview just a few quick notes: If you haven't joined the Patreon community yet, please consider doing so! This episode features Owen King of Iron Clad Distillery. Stephen King purchased the building, a dry goods warehouse built in 1913, approximately 15 years ago. To best utilize the space, the decision was made to try to store bourbon barrels. This led to acquiring a 26 gallon still. From there, they began to get more serious and bought 5 more 26 gallon stills. This expansion gave them the opportunity to fill one 53 gallon barrel a week. This slow process encouraged Stephen and Owen to seek advice from other distillers in the industry. Conversations and experiences brought them to their next step which was to upgrade the entire operation to a 500 gallon still. Now they had the keys to their own system of producing high quality bourbon in larger batches. Owen shares that the vision has been to use Virginia based grains. Their base is a 4 grain mash bill. The King's have always been big fans and lovers of bourbon. So, opening a distillery made sense that this was the direction that the family was headed. You will hear and understand how the bourbon gene is a part of the families history. Acknowledging history is in the forefront of how they communicate the Iron Clad story. Today they make history with their many expressions. They plant their own flag by creating unique and one of a kind bourbons. Also, paying homage to the well established distilleries out there too. 124 23rd St, Newport News, VA 23607 - (757) 245-1996 - www.ironcladdistillery.com - Facebook Highlights from our discussion: Affordable Distilling Equipment Kings County Distillery Delilah's Bardstown Bourbon Company Evan Williams Bourbon Wild Turkey Ferm Solutions Four Roses Bourbon Neeley Family Distillery Stoll and Wolfe Distillery Silver Hand Meadery Redwood Smoke Shack Bill Savage Big Thirst Marketing

Our Story Kelly Braffet reads to us from her novel The Broken Tower's preface, which reads like a myth. These initial pages serve to (re)introduce readers to the characters and their struggles in a fantastic world of magical bonds, warring kingdoms, and a power beyond reckoning. Our Guest Kelly Braffet is the author of the Border Lands novels, including The Broken Tower and The Unwilling, as well as the novels Save Yourself, Josie and Jack and Last Seen Leaving. Her writing has been published in The Fairy Tale Review, Post Road, and several anthologies. She attended Sarah Lawrence College and Columbia University and currently lives in upstate New York with her husband, the author Owen King. You can purchase a signed copy of The Broken Tower from https://www.oblongbooks.com/autographed-books (Oblong Books & Music) or anywhere you love to buy books. Our Conversation In the discussion that follows the story, we explore the themes from the book and the choices an author makes, particularly when creating her own fantasy world: Themes of power, not just the magical sort, and how this is central to all of Kelly's work Written in 2020 and 2021, this is a real “pandemic novel” that responds to the moment during it which it was written The dual meaning of “Work,” which describes the magic in this world and the factories that make the book “a capitalist dystopia” The question of whose stories get told and feeling haunted by all the people whose stories were never told The conscious inclusion of differently abled people as well as well as folks across gender identities and sexualities The question “who am I writing for” and how the author's choices can hurt certain readers, particularly those with marginalized identities. Why Kelly chose to create a mythic world that does not replicate our own Our Music Music on the show is by the wonderful Beth Sweeney and Billy Hardy, a Celtic Fiddle and multi-instrumental Duo based on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. The traditional Irish reel we play at the start of the show is called The College Groves.
Tonight we’re chatting with Rio Youers, author of the new book Lola on Fire, which releases 2/16 from William Morrow. People have called the book a mix of Killing Eve, John Wick and Kill Bill. About the book:Brody Ellis is short on luck and even shorter on cash to buy the medication his sister Molly needs. Desperate, he robs a convenience store, but on the way out, he bumps into a young woman and loses his wallet. Just when he expects the cops to arrive, the phone rings. It’s Blair Mayo—the woman he bumped into—and she’s got the missing billfold. Brody will get it back, but only if he does her a favor: steal her late mother’s diamonds from her wicked stepmom. But when he gets to the house, he finds a gruesome crime scene—and a security camera. Brody knows he’s been framed. Back home, the terrified young man gets another call. The police won’t get the incriminating video footage, Blair says. Instead, her daddy, the notorious mobster Jimmy Latzo, will exact his own kind of revenge. Brody and Molly realize that they’ve become pawns in a mysterious game—one that involves a notorious enforcer named Lola Bear who brutally crossed paths with Jimmy Latzo twenty-six years before. . . a ghost from the past who is intimately connected to their lives. Stephen argues that good ideas come from nowhere. It might be two unrelated ideas in your brain that will suddenly collide and create something beautiful. Your job is not to find these ideas but to recognise them when they show up. So you need to be ready, to listen, look around and see where those ideas might appear. This means turning off the TV and putting away other screens to start noticing things in order to be ready for the good ideas to arrive. He also talks about readiness by taking writing seriously, being intentional and approaching the blank page with meaning. BIG IDEA 2 (8:21) – Kill your darlings (and your adverbs). Creating a space between the original writing and your final draft can make a world of difference. When it comes to editing, Stephen said that when you write a story, you are telling yourself the story. But when you re-write, your main job is to take out the things that are not the story. Editing involves killing the words, paragraphs and even characters that you put in and that you are so attached to, but you have to let go of in order to tell the best story. One of the quotes in the book says that “writing is refined thinking.” It is not just talking on paper. This also includes killing your desire to use longer words than necessary. He said that the best words you should use are the first ones that come to your mind, if they do the job. And whilst you are busy killing your darlings, you should be killing your adverbs too. They are a lazy way of describing an action or dialogue which should have been made obvious by the preceding prose. BIG IDEA 3 (12:13) – Read a lot, write a lot. Reading equals writing. Stephen said that if you don’t have the time to read, you don’t have the time, or the tools, to write. Reading broadly let’s you work out what you do and don’t like and can help you find your style. Joining writing classes might not give you the silver bullet to writing, but helps you find good critics. There is no secret ingredient, just read a lot and write a lot. This goes back to the big idea number one about being serious and not coming lightly to the blank page. It takes intent and a lot of practice to write well. Sleeping Beauties is such a beautiful story! It is one of my favorite novels I’ve ever red with a very interesting idea about why the world is so troubled (& and how to potentially fix it)! Episode 74 FINALLY reviews the ending, Parts 2 & 3, of Stephen and Owen King's exciting and super twisty novel, “Sleeping Beauties”. I try my best to refresh everyone's memories of ALL the characters involved in this massive tome, relish in the creative manner in which the King men take on the battle of the sexes and create these scenarios that thematically represent them, and dedicate this show to every woman I know, all of whom have had to find her own version of “Our Place”. Maya and her friend Joe discuss the Stephen King short story collection Night Shift, which includes such gems as The Lawnmower Man and The Mangler. Joe tries to wrap his head around how Stephen King was writing connections into his stories before he wrote any of his books, and Maya spreads some Stephen King propaganda, and makes up some lies about Owen King's childhood. Also, lots of rats.
Author Owen King talks to Sean Tuohy about what inspired his novel Double Feature, collaborating with Stephen King on Sleeping Beauties, the value of writing workshops, and what he has planned next. To learn more about Owen King, visit his official website, like his Facebook page, or follow him on Twitter @OwenKingwriter. Today's episode is sponsored by OneRoom and NovelClass.
Co-author of 'Sleeping Beauties', Owen King tells us this week's writer's routine! In writing terms, Owen King could not have found himself in a better place. His dad, Stephen King, is one of the world's most successful authors, publishing over 50 books across horror and fantasy, he has sold over 350 million copies, and he's co-written the brand new 'Sleeping Beauties' with his son, Owen! So, if you're here to get writing tips from the best, this week's guest has learned his craft from the absolute master.'Sleeping Beauties' is a story about the aftermath of every woman on the world falling asleep, seemingly forever. No one knows why, or where they may have gone, and we find out how many different sets of characters react to the mystery, and what that means for modern gender politics. Owen talks about where the idea came from, why it was originally meant to be on the TV, and what the pressure of writing for a Stephen King level of fanbase is really like. Also, you can find out the only real struggle Owen and his dad had along the way, was who would hand in the final manuscript! Our Distinguished Diary today is the weird and wonderful writing routine of WH Auden, and we'll find out exactly what helped him sleep for barely more than 6 hours, and still work for 10 hours a day - he did love his routine, but there's something... else in play too.@writerspodwritersroutine.com See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Lucy had good reason for not being her usual organised self so emulated an impala leaping around between subjects which made the podcast even more entertaining than usual. The monologue did major on teeth and geese, and she accurately replayed the worst successful job interview in history. Lots of predictions this week – the Sterlings do not return but the Grundies move to Grange Farm as caretakers; Roy gets together with either Lizzie or Kirsty; although the betting is on Kirsty (aided by Fallon and Kathy who knows about violence at the hands of Owen King) sorting Rob with a Christmas termination of the baby for Helen before Kirsty settles down with Tom. Roifield is predicting that DTD will soon be starting a TV channel. Technology was discussed at length as no iphone can detect Rob’s edging and anyway a deleted video can always be recovered and mobile phones have undermined popping round to see people – which still happens in The Archers. Owen King is the guest. His new novel, Double Feature, is now available from Scribner. Karen Russell raves “What a kinetic, joyful, gonzo ride—Double Feature made me laugh so loudly on a plane that I had to describe the plot of Sam's Spruce Moose of a debut film (it stars a satyr) to my seatmate by way of explanation. Booth and Sam are an unforgettable Oedipal duo. A book that delivers walloping pleasures to its lucky readers.” And Larry McMurtry says “Double Feature is a beautiful, wrenching beginning, and Owen King is a young writer of immense promise.” Monologue topics: listener feedback, overdoing gender politics, Bad Sex in Fiction Award.
