We chat about the recent Valisure paper on benzoyl peroxide, the use (and overuse??) of niacinamide and hyaluronic acid, the amount of sunscreen we ACTUALLY need to be using, retinol's partial ban in the UK, and the benefits of different vitamin C derivatives. They debunk so many skin myths, I was taking notes myself. If you don't follow Chemist Confessions on Instagram you should. Former formulation chemists Victoria Fu and Gloria Lu also have a new book Skincare Decoded which is a must-read. Lauren talks to them about clean beauty (and if it's really better), how to properly layer skincare products together, if the expensive products really worth the money and their strict no-no list.
Returning to the show today are Victoria Fu and Gloria Lu, co-founders of Chemist Confessions and authors of the new book Skincare Decoded: The Practical Guide to Beautiful Skin. When we last spoke with Victoria and Gloria, they were busy running an online skincare platform and developing new skincare products. Somehow in the middle of all that, they managed to squeeze in writing a book as well. If you ask them, they initially thought it wouldn't be much more than repackaging everything they'd already written on their blog. They couldn't have been more wrong. But the same effort and care that they've put into their blog went into their book, and as a result, sales are spiking. Listen in as we cover everything from having to navigate the launch of the book on their own, why Gloria's excitement about finding her book at her local bookstore was not shared by the cashier, and what humans have in common with guinea pigs when it comes to skincare.
This week's episode featured a conversation with Gloria and Victoria from Chemist Confessions. We covered A LOT: What it’s like to be a cosmetic chemist, tips to become one, effectively communicating science, managing an online platform - navigating brand partnerships while still keeping true to your message is tough. Launching a brand, and keeping the brand going during the pandemic is too - we’re all surviving the supply chain disruptions that have become the norm. For anyone looking to jump into something with both feet, the start of Chemist Confessions should give you some inspiration. Enjoy! Interested in supporting our podcast on Patreon? The Chemist Confessions dynamic duo is back AGAIN! Chemists, brand owners, and fan favorites Victoria Fu and Gloria Lu make their annual return to Natch Beaut, and this time they are answering the hunnies (and Jackie’s) questions! How long does it take for a skincare product to actually work? Is eye cream a scam? Should we retinol our necks and eyelids? What's the deal with the Purito sunscreen scandal? Does Vitamin C serum have to smell like dirty hot dogs for it to be effective? All this, and way more! For a list of products mentioned in this episode, go to www.natchbeaut.com. I sat down for an educational and inspiring conversation with Victoria Fu (UCSD BS in chemical engineering '12, MS in nanoengineering '13). Our wide-ranging conversation covered her upbringing and education, trajectory in the chemical and beautycare industries, the stories behind the founding of Chemist Confessions, and advice for young scientists and engineers headed out into the world on their own.
Today’s guests are Gloria Lu and Victoria Fu, co-founders of Chemist Confessions, the skincare brand that started as an attempt to break down the overly complicated and purposefully confusing world of beauty products. They were industry insiders working at L’Oréal, and they were fed up with the lack of transparency in how the Big Brands marketed to consumers. Since they’re both actually chemists (hence the name), when they tackled misconceptions and broke down the basics of healthy skincare, people listened. They were able to amass a passionate and loyal fanbase before eventually expanding into their own line of skincare products. Listen in as we cover everything from what would happen if you only applied sunscreen to one half of your face consistently over ten years, the three most basic and essential skincare products, and—in accordance with one of their most popular hashtags—we decode that ingredient list.
Our conversation with the brilliant chemists behind Chemist Confessions, Victoria Fu and Gloria Lu, continues! They explain the differences between AHA and BHA, mechanical vs. chemical exfoliants, how to start a basic skincare routine and then how to build it up, how oil cleansing works, and more! Plus, is Jackie’s favorite 300 dollar serum worth the price? For a list of everything mentioned in this episode, go to www.natchbeaut.com. Learn more about your ad choices. What AHA do YOU need? The brilliant chemists behind Chemist Confessions, Victoria Fu and Gloria Lu, are back! They are answering all the hunnie’s questions, including the best versions of Vitamin c’s, what product expiration dates actually mean, how to combine serums like a pro, and why we shouldn’t be afraid of sulfates.
