Welcome back to Beauty is a Bitch, where we get real about aging, confidence, and owning your power in midlife and beyond. Today's episode is extra special because I got to sit down with the one and only Julia Haart. You probably know her from the hit Netflix series My Unorthodox Life, but she's so much more than that. Julia is a total force—a self-made entrepreneur, author and advocate for women's empowerment. She's lived a life of radical reinvention, going from an ultra-Orthodox community to becoming the CEO of major fashion brands and now launching her own shapewear line, Body by Julia Haart—which, by the way, includes my new favorite bra. Seriously. We got into it all—what it really means to feel sexy and confident as we age, how to break free from limiting beliefs, and why it's time we stop shrinking ourselves just because society expects us to. We talked body image, personal style, reinvention, navigating criticism, and how to rewrite your story at any age. Oh—and we got on like gangbusters. I now consider her one of my besties (not in a creepy way, I promise). This conversation is honest, empowering, and full of truth bombs you don't want to miss. In midlife, our bodies start speaking louder—whether through hormonal shifts, chronic inflammation, or the wear and tear of years of stress. Western medicine often focuses on treating symptoms, while Eastern healing philosophies emphasize root-cause healing, balance, and longevity. But what if we could blend the best of both worlds for a truly comprehensive, patient-centered approach to health? This week, I'm joined by Dr. Anuradha Lala-Trindade (Anu Lala), a renowned cardiologist specializing in heart failure management, cardiometabolic disease, and holistic patient care. She believes in a patient-centered approach, integrating medical advancements with emotional and spiritual well-being to create personalized treatment plans. Dr. Lala serves as Deputy Editor of the Journal of Cardiac Failure, leads research for major cardiology networks, and has been recognized by the American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology for her contributions to cardiovascular education and awareness. In this episode we discuss; How Western medicine & Eastern healing complement each other in midlife health Why treatment ≠ healing and how to shift from symptom management to whole-body wellness The role of chronic inflammation in aging & how to reduce it naturally How stress, trauma, and emotional health impact heart disease and longevity The best lifestyle strategies to balance hormones, improve metabolism & boost energy How to navigate medication vs. lifestyle interventions to create the best health plan If you're ready to explore a more balanced, integrated approach to health and healing in midlife, this episode is for you.
Sleep is one of the most essential components of our health, yet so many women struggle with getting quality rest—especially in midlife. In this episode, I'm joined by Dr. Carleara Weiss, Ph.D., MSH, RN, a sleep expert, researcher, and advocate for women's health. Dr. Weiss brings over 15 years of experience as an Adult-Geriatric Nurse and is currently a Research Assistant Professor at the State University of New York in Buffalo. She has been featured in Buzzfeed, Insider, EatingWell, Women's Health and on the Well+Good podcast, and she's here to help us uncover why so many women are struggling with sleep—and what we can do about it. From the impact of hormones and life changes to the lack of sleep resources in healthcare, this conversation is packed with must-know insights and practical solutions. We dive into the findings of Aeroflow Sleep's recent survey on women's sleep health and what the results reveal about our well-being. Why do so many women feel exhausted even when they're getting the recommended amount of sleep? Dr. Weiss helps us break down the most common sleep disorders affecting women in midlife and explains why more than half of women have never spoken to their doctor about sleep. If you've been struggling with fatigue, we talk about how you can start that conversation with your healthcare provider and what practical steps you can take to improve your sleep quality. We also explore the strong connection between poor sleep and mental health, and why women are particularly vulnerable to this link. Hormonal shifts and life changes in midlife play a huge role in sleep disruptions, and we discuss why sleep resources and supplies are often underprovided by doctors—and how to advocate for better access. Dr. Weiss also sheds light on the use of CPAP machines and other sleep aids, explaining why they're often underutilized by women and how they can be game-changers for those struggling with sleep apnea. Finally, we examine what changes need to happen in healthcare to bridge the gaps in women's sleep health. Don't miss this essential conversation on sleep, health and self-care! Welcome to the 100th episode of Beauty is a Bitch! It would seem dementia is on the rise, and that is a scary realization. The truth is, women have a greater risk of developing dementia during their lifetime. In fact, around twice as many women have Alzheimer's disease – the most common type of dementia – compared to men. The main reason for this greater risk is because women live longer than men, and old age is the biggest risk factor for this disease. However, other factors also play a role. Some of these risks can be mitigated, which begs the question, "What can we do for better brain health?" Health coach Susan Saunders, specializes in helping women over 50 reduce dementia risk and optimize brain health through science-backed habits. She is the author of three books on healthy aging and longevity, with her most recent being The Power Decade: How to Thrive After Menopause. Susan holds a high-level qualification as a dementia prevention coach under the guidance of neuroscientist Dr. Dale Bredesen, author of The End of Alzheimer's. She was among the first in the UK to qualify as a coach in his program. Susan has successfully coached hundreds of people globally, helping them build habits scientifically proven to reduce dementia risk. Please join Lauren and Susan as they dig deep into: the single most important thing we can do to look after our brains as we age; the six pillars of better brain health; why Susan started on this journey to better brain health; why we need to emphasize healthy habits to reduce our dementia risk; why more women than men get dementia; what happens to our brains during menopause; and what a coaching session looks like. According to the latest research, life expectancy has risen dramatically, increasing 26 years since the mid-20th century. However our healthspan (healthy years free of disease) has not followed suit. There is a significant gap between our lifespan and healthspan driven by the pandemic of chronic diseases afflicting a growing aging population. The current overburdened and reactive health care system is compounding this lag in quality of life, where health risks linger for years and are detected late. The age-old quest for healthy longevity begins with predictive healthcare. And while AI may seem a bit scary to us GenXers, its potential could prove very helpful when it comes to analyzing biomarkers on healthspan and longevity. So now it's trendy to buy Drunk Elephant Bronzing Drops with peptides for $34 or Dior Lip Glow Oil for $40 or even Summer Fridays Midnight Ritual Retinol Renewal Serum for $69! Yes, tweens are putting anti-aging retinols and Vitamin C's and other acids on their face because it's trendy and aspirational, but it's also hurting their skin. Why are we as middle aged women told to embrace aging and yet teens fear it? How did we get here? Elena Frankel and Carolyn Barber are the founders of Flyte.70, a beauty brand that focuses on grown-up skin. They believe life is about embracing, not fighting, change and that we are as youthful as we feel...not by the numbers on our birthday cake. They understand that no matter how many layers of full-coverage concealer or contour sticks we apply, we won't magically transform into our 20-year-old selves and that we need to be okay with that. Join Lauren, Elena and Carolyn as they discuss: what lead to this irrational fear of aging; if TikTok or parents are driving the bus; who is paying for this expensive skincare and why; how stores might deal with this (if they can) and calm the dopamine needs of our tweens and teens; how we can talk some sense into teenage girls to not buy into the hype; how teens are ruining their skin; ingredients teens needs to stay away from, and so much more. Can you suddenly develop food allergies in midlife? You bet! As we age, our immune system may weaken naturally (not to mention our out-of-whack hormones) which may be why you're suddenly struggling with foods you were always able to eat before. But maybe what you are experiencing is actually a food intolerance and not a food allergy. It can be difficult to differentiate between the two. And we need to, because in order to feel our best, it's important to know which foods to avoid. Dr. Gill Hart is a PhD Biochemist and the Scientific Director at YorkTest Laboratories. Her passion for science and helping people improve their health has guided her entire career. From managing a hospital hormone testing lab to developing unique "at home" fertility tests for men and women. Since 2005 she has been with YorkTest where her food sensitivity testing came to be. She says seeing the difference that it makes to everyday lives is the pinnacle of her career. YorkTest Laboratories Inc pioneered the first IgG based food sensitivity in the 90's, and can boast that as of today, they have tested over half a million people. Listen as Lauren and Dr. Hart talk about: the main differences between food allergies and food intolerance; why it seems food allergies on are the rise; the age range when food allergies and intolerances typically develop; if both can change as you get older; the most common food allergies and food intolerances in middle aged women; how our hormones impact our reactions to certain foods; the most common symptoms of both food allergies and food intolerances in middle aged women; and the best ways to manage food allergies and intolerances in our daily lives. If you want to recapture that fresh-faced youthful, radiant glow, love just may be the drug you're looking for. Yes, popular skincare ingredients like Bakuchiol, squalane, green tea, vitamin C, etc. are helping aging skin, but board-certified dermatologist, Dr. Nicole Hayre is taking a different approach. That little makeup bag you keep in your handbag may be more dangerous that you realize. If you toss in makeup, beauty blenders, hair ties (and band-aids) and rarely remove anything, you are far from alone. But you could potentially be harming your health. Guest Hanieh Sigari who is a biochemist, entrepreneur and anti-aging industry disruptor explains how the bacteria that breeds in that bag can possibly lead to skin infections, blood poisoning and extreme cases, death. Yikes! Join Lauren and Hanieh as they discuss: what in our makeup bags is causing the problem; how bacteria and mold grow in there and how to get rid of it; how to properly clean your beauty bag; what types of makeup can potentially be the most dangerous; how to figure out when your makeup and skincare expires (this will surprise you); what to toss out and if there a general rule of thumb; and what should be in a "good" makeup bag. Lauren even goes through her makeup bag and shares what's hiding in there. They also discuss Hanieh's holistic, personalized skincare brand Qyral (pronounced Ky-roll) and how it empowers women.
