Amy Liu's journey to redefining clean beauty started in her own skin. As someone with eczema, she knew firsthand the struggle of finding beauty products that were both safe and effective. The industry was full of promises, but few products delivered results without irritation. After years of working behind the scenes at Smashbox, Kate Somerville, and Josie Maran Cosmetics, Amy found herself at a crossroads. She had built brands for others, but what about a brand built for people like her? People who wanted beauty without compromise? At 40, she took the leap and launched Tower 28, the first and only beauty brand 100% compliant with the National Eczema Association's ingredient guidelines. In this episode, Nancy and Amy unpack the highs and lows of entrepreneurship—overcoming the fear of failure, scaling a business while staying true to her mission, and bringing her husband on board as CFO. Recognized as Ernst & Young's Entrepreneur of the Year for Greater Los Angeles and one of Goldman Sachs' most exceptional entrepreneurs, Amy has proven that success doesn't have to come at the cost of integrity. This is a conversation about resilience, leadership, and the power of collaboration over competition. Above all, it's a story about turning a personal struggle into a movement that's changing the face of beauty.Timestamps:[00:00] Introduction[04:26] Struggling with eczema and the need for safe beauty products[05:52] Discovering the flaws in clean beauty[07:38] Why it took her so long to start her own business[08:54] Getting her first investment and launching Tower 28[10:42] Why launching at 40 was the right decision[11:58] The myth of overnight success and why experience matters[13:21] The role of a CEO and why she chose to stay in the position[14:47] Challenges of balancing leadership with business growth[16:32] Bringing her husband in as CFO and working with a spouse[18:15] Breaking through the crowded beauty market[19:44] The philosophy behind Tower 28's product development[21:18] Why sensitive skin testing sets Tower 28 apart[22:53] Expanding at Sephora and becoming a top-performing brand[24:36] When to raise money and how to choose the right investors[26:24] Private equity, beauty playbooks, and scaling successfully[28:10] The challenges of hiring and building the right team[30:28] Leadership lessons and learning from mistakes[32:42] Creating Clean Beauty Summer School and supporting founders[34:20] The importance of representation in the beauty industry[36:08] Why collaboration is more powerful than competition[38:35] Advice for struggling entrepreneurs in a competitive marketResources Mentioned:Tower 28 | WebsiteNational Eczema Association | WebsiteSephora Clean | WebsiteGoop Clean | WebsiteCredo Clean | WebsiteClean Beauty Summer School | WebsiteFollow Nancy Twine:Instagram: @nancytwinewww.nancytwine.comFollow Makers Mindset:Instagram: @makersmindsetspaceTikTok: @themakersmindset

Amy has worked in the beauty industry for years, working under top beauty organizations such as L'Oreal, Kate Somerville, Smashbox - the list goes on! We talk to Amy about how she thought about the risk she was talking in starting her career with a successful corporate career under her belt, three kids and a mortgage. Amy also shares her perspective on why there's never a “right time” to get started, why we should never fall into the trap of comparison, the power of fostering real relationships in life and in business, and so much more.In this episode, we'll talk to Amy about:* Where Amy's aversion to risk originated. When it comes to celebrity estheticians in Hollywood, Kate Somerville is the OG. I have personally been a longtime fan of Kate and her products like her legendary ExfoliKate, as well as her clinic on Melrose Place in Los Angeles. Kate opened her first Skin Health Clinic back in 2004 and women immediately fell in love with the personalization Kate and her team provided, giving hope to those who couldn't find skin solutions anywhere else. Word quickly spread through the entertainment industry and she became the go-to for the world's most famous and photographed faces. It was because of one of these celebrities that her holy grail product the ExfoliKate Intensive was born and evolved into her clinically perfected luxurious formulas sold worldwide.  But there is a lot more to the woman behind this amazing brand. She's passionate about helping others who - like her - come from humble beginnings, have faced unimaginable setbacks, and are determined to chase their dreams and defy impossible odds.  In this episode you'll learn: How Kate's childhood influenced her desire to launch a skincare brand Kate's approach to beautiful skin and wellness The story behind the one product that catapulted her skincare brand Why exfoliation is important Tips to avoid aging skin The 5 Daily Dos for healthy skin  Skincare essentials every woman needs  Why peptides are important Unhealthy skincare trends to avoid  Number one laser skin treatment Follow Kate on Social Media www.Instagram.com/katesomervilleskincare www.TikTok.com/katesomervilleskincare www.Facebook.com/katesomervilleskincare www.YouTube.com/c/katesomervilleskin Learn more about Kate  www.katesomerville.com/ Shop Kate Somerville Products  https://www.katesomerville.com/us/en/shop/  Discount Code: KISS20 for 20% off your first order of products Or enjoy 20% off your first facial at Kate Somerville Skin Health Experts Clinic on Melrose Place with code KISS20 To book an appointment call 323-655-7546 or visit www.katesomerville.com/us/en/clinic-page.html  Connect with Christine on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/christinebullock/ Connect with Christine on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ChristineBullockFitness Follow Christine on Pinterest: https://www.pinterest.com/chrissybullock/_created/ Text Christine questions at 1-310-361-8697 Join Brooke Burke Body App and get 2 weeks free with code "KISS22": https://kayobodycare.com/pages/bbbapp Sponsored by Kayo Body Care Kayo Body Care was the first to create Face Grade Body Care® products. Redheads are prone to melanoma more than any other hair color. Sunscreen knowledge is so essential and if you've listened to our podcast (or read HowtobeaRedhead.com for the last decade), you know we're passionate about skincare for redheads. The month of May is the beginning of Melanoma Awareness Month and we're kicking it off with a very special Saturday episode! Our guest is Evelynn Moz from VERTRA Premium Suncare. She is the Product Line Manager and passionate about sunscreen. It's scary because a recent study found that many of the American sunscreen products labeled as “broad spectrum” block UVB rays but don’t block UVA rays. UVA penetrates the skin more deeply than UVB. Vertra is committed to creating a premium sunscreen line that is infused with non-nano, mineral UVA/UVB blockers that meet the maximum 80-minute FDA water and sweat resistance ratings. They’re also paraben-free and great for redhead skin. *Hint, Hint*: The May H2BAR Box ships today and VERTRA is one of the sunscreen brands inside! Subscribe: www.h2barbox.com For over a decade now Vertra has provided the ocean’s best athletes with superior UV protection with a patented processes. Vertra is now considered the ultimate skincare for anyone who enjoys the outdoors. We talk with Evelynn about her work with Dior, Chanel, Estee Lauder, Kate Somerville and now VERTRA. As an athlete herself, she was a competitive soccer player in her teens and even played in two world cup tournaments in Europe, so she knows how bad sunburns can be. We discuss about the following: 1. Let’s talk about VERTRA! Tell us a bit about the brand? Why was it created? 2. Although the brand has roots in the professional surf industry, the products that Vertra makes can be used not only for any sport, but also for daily wear.  Vertra is so beneficial for young athletes, so that they are better protected and more knowledgeable than the generations that came before us. We heard you were a competitive soccer player in your teens and even played in two world cup tournaments in Europe! 3. We’re so excited to have your Pearl White Sticks 50+ a part of our May H2BAR Box. It’s an amazing product. Why is this product so unique? 4. Why is reef-safe important? 5. Not a lot of consumers know the difference between all the ingredients in sunscreen. Why is Octinoxate & Oxybenzone harmful? 6. We know the VERTRA products are 80 minute water-resistant. What does that exactly mean? 7. What are some tips for after-sun care? Want to help us spread the news about the How to be a Redhead brand and this podcast? Please give us a 5 star review and tell your friends (redheads and everyone else) to subscribe! You can listen to this podcast directly on HowtobeaRedhead.com, on Apple iTunes, Spotify or wherever you listen to podcasts. Amy Liu, founder and CEO of Tower 28, had dreams of being a beauty founder, in large part because she watched her father live out his own entrepreneurial dreams. But instead, she chose to work for some of the biggest founder-led brands before starting her own clean makeup company in 2019. "I sought out founder-based brands here in Los Angeles, and prestige ones, color, skin care. I worked at Kate Somerville, Smashbox Cosmetics, Josie Maran. And really, with all the companies -- I went to went from bigger company to smaller company -- my role kept getting bigger. The hope there was that I just wanted to see what it was like to have a seat at the table," she said on the most recent episode of the Glossy Beauty Podcast. Because of Liu's own chronic eczema, Tower 28 was created to go beyond the proposition of clean. "I tried to make the switch to clean beauty, but a lot of clean beauty felt like it was actually pretty hard on my sensitive skin because there are essential oils and plant botanicals in it." Moreover, there were few clean color cosmetics options when Liu was conceiving of her brand. Layering a youthful and accessible positioning has been a boon for the new brand --- products are all under $28. It's ranked No. 7 at Sephora, and it's penetrating 1% of Sephora sales worldwide. "One percent of all Sephora customers are buying Tower 28, which is actually a feat that a lot of big brands never get to; that is partly because of the fact that our price point is low, so then a lot of people can have the ability to try our products."

The Art of Serendipitous Innovation On this episode of the Reboot Chronicles Podcast, Rose Fernandez, CEO of Algenist, and I explored how her company was accidentally discovered and born in a lab, and instead of being cast aside, it was repurposed, carved out and acquired. Throughout Rose's career, she's helped build a handful of well-known beauty companies in executive roles, including Murad, Kate Somerville, and Jurlique. She joined around the time it was being spun out its parent company and acquired by Tengram Capital Partners, and eventually she took on the (her first) CEO role. Her journey was not easy, as she stepped up to the plate with much to learn about running a company, creating ingredients—and the legal, governance and growth issues that followed. Algae Lab Experiment to Beauty Brand Their core ingredient, alguronic acid, was accidentally discovered for another project and later turned into a patented skincare ingredient, expanded and imbedded into their broad productline. Unlike other health, wellness and beauty brands, Algenist was born from robust biotechnology, and turned into a culture that gets the science, and can actually make the ingredients, not just source it like most brands. They pride themselves on being a safe and clean brand with natural, quality ingredients suited for the emerging mass-market. Health, Beauty & Food Today consumers are more educated and informed about the foods they buy and the products they put on their bodies, a trend that is headed to the mass-market. Whole Foods paved the way, informing the average consumer on quality ingredients and what is going into their bodies. This is becoming the overarching theme in the health, wellness and beauty sectors, with many brands taking the initiative to provide consumers with quality ingredients while informing and providing clarity on the benefits. Larger CPG companies are also jumping on the bandwagon, building and acquiring brands in order to leverage these new ingredient claims—but they have a way to go. Entrepreneurial Tips Rose shared some tips she has learned about building a business. First, know your customer. This is key to draw them in and create appealing products. Second, find the best distribution options for your customer—DTC is just one. Three, do not just do what's currently trending. This can be a distraction; one you may have to undo later. Lastly, do not try and do everything, I have made this mistake as a CEO. Do what is true to you; this will set you apart from the rest. I might add, having some unique and patented products in your portfolio doesn't hurt either! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/rebootchronicles/message

On today’s episode of the Journeywomen podcast, I’m chatting with Jill Atogwe on the topic of submission. We talked about everything from submitting to the Lord, to how doing so actually enables us to joyfully submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.   Here’s what Jill said about doing that, “Submission is an ugly word in the culture. People don’t want to say it, people certainly don’t want to do it, but we are all created equal. It’s not to say that anyone is less-than. We are all created equal in the image of God, and yet, we willing choose to submit to one another out of love for Christ and each other.”   So you’ll know her a little better, Jill is the woman behind the lifestyle blog Gold & Graphite and her goal is to make her life beautiful and glorify God with everything he has entrusted to her. She has been married to her husband Oshiomogho, for 7 years and she is mama to her 3.5 year old son, Oshiolema, and her nearly-2-year-old daughter, Keogena. There are few people I love following on social media as much today's guest. Dana Cowin's enthusiasm for food, career, and life as a whole are a delight.  As editor in chief of Food & Wine Magazine for 21 years, a judge on Top Chef, a cookbook author, the host of the podcast Speaking Broadly, a chief creative officer at Dig Inn, just to name a few--on paper she's clearly extremely accomplished. In person however, she far exceeded her impressive resume she was present, welcoming, inspirational, wise, and warm when I visited her Manhattan apartment to record. Dana made us tea, gushed about her best friend Cheryl, and made sure I had a cozy pillow to sit on before diving into the interview. She was not only easy to talk to but allowed the conversation to organically meander wherever I  led us. We chatted about female friendship, the evolution of food culture and her role in that, food culture and trends now, what a day in the life of a editor in chief is actually like, career transitions (Dana was EIC for 21 years before leaving in 2017), the power of story and her new love of podcasting, food as pleasure and connection, her advice to mentors and mentees, and so much more. I loved everything about Dana and it was a delight to have her on the podcast.    Notes from the Show:-Dana Cownin on The Web | Instagram | Twitter |- Dana's Ted Talk-Dana's Podcast Speaking Broadly-Dana's Top Chef Episode- Season 5, Episode 5- Cheryl Miller Houser's episode on the podcast-NYC Restaurants we talked about: Egg House (pop-up), ABCV, Frenchette, Dig Inn Cool Things to Check-Out:-Interested in learning how to launch your own podcast? Live(ish) from Beautycon 2017. We came. We saw. We Contoured. If you missed the event, don’t worry because this is the next best thing. We interviewed reps from a handful of amazing brands including Kopari, Morphe, Tammy Taylor Nails, Pinkie Swear, Carol’s Daughter, Kate Somerville, Jergens, NYX and Beauty Blender (finally, a definitive answer on how to use those spongy things!). One week later, we discuss our reflections from the event and what we realized is the easiest way to learn the best tips and tricks from all of your favorite brands. This is probably our most informative episode yet. And yes, we recorded all of this in the VIP Room. Who do you think we are?
