Texas Republicans are about to answer a question that has been hanging over the party since 2024: is partial loyalty to Trump enough anymore, or do you either become fully absorbed into MAGA or get pushed out entirely? Because both John Cornyn and Chip Roy represent different versions of Republicanism that tried, in different ways, to coexist with Trump without completely surrendering to him. And right now it looks like both experiments are failing. Chip Roy backed Ron DeSantis and spent years cultivating the image of an ideological purist who would occasionally buck leadership. Cornyn, meanwhile, did the exact opposite. He spent the last few years trying to carefully stay inside Trump's orbit, hiring Trumpworld operatives and constantly reminding voters how aligned he was with the president. One strategy was confrontation, the other was accommodation, and both may end in political extinction.Politics Politics Politics is a reader-supported publication. MAGA voters have absurdly long memories when it comes to perceived disloyalty during the DeSantis challenge. Roy spent the last year trying to re-enter the fold by being more cooperative, less antagonistic, more visibly aligned with the movement, but the suspicion never really disappeared. In a normal political environment, Roy's résumé would make him a strong favorite for statewide office in Texas. Instead, he now looks like somebody who made one unforgivable career calculation at exactly the wrong moment. If the polling is right and Mays Middleton wins comfortably, then the lesson Republican politicians will take from this is brutal: you do not get credit for eventually coming home after backing an alternative to Trump. The scarlet letter sticks.Cornyn's downfall is more interesting because he actually played the game correctly, at least according to the old rules. He built institutional support. He raised enormous amounts of money. He aligned himself with Trump operationally. For a while it even looked like it might work. He outperformed expectations in the initial round of voting and there were persistent rumors that Trumpworld had seriously considered endorsing him. But the problem with trying to survive inside Trump politics is that eventually survival itself becomes weakness. Ken Paxton understood this instinctively. He didn't need to prove he was more effective than Cornyn. He just needed to remain more emotionally connected to the base long enough for Trump to make a final decision. Once the endorsement landed, the race effectively stopped being about qualifications and became a referendum on who belonged more naturally inside the MAGA coalition.What's fascinating is that this same dynamic is now showing signs of strain elsewhere. South Carolina Republicans refusing to immediately fall in line on redistricting suggests at least some elected Republicans are beginning to quietly calculate for a post-Trump future. Not necessarily because Trump lacks influence — he very clearly still has it — but because the timing starts to matter. If Trump cannot personally destroy you until after the next election cycle, then maybe you can survive long enough for his attention to move elsewhere. That's the first real symptom of lame-duck politics: not open rebellion, but selective hesitation. Politicians start making small bets that enforcement may become inconsistent.And that's probably the deeper story underneath all of this. Trump still absolutely has the power to end Republican careers. Thomas Massie just learned that. Cornyn is probably about to learn it. Roy may learn it too. But the coalition is also beginning to subtly adapt around the reality that Trump's political clock is finite. The question is whether Republicans are entering a transition period where fear of Trump remains dominant but no longer universally paralyzing. The SPLC then raised over $800,000 in donations in the aftermath of that very march — a march their own paid source helped organize. They set up fictitious corporate entities to funnel the payments, opened fraudulent bank accounts, made false statements to financial institutions, and paid their informants to commit state and federal crimes including theft and breaking and entering. We explain why the bank fraud charges are the strongest part of the case, what the IRS is likely looking at next, and why the SPLC's response — blaming the Trump administration for targeting political opponents — conspicuously failed to deny the actual crimes. We also dig into the midterm landscape and Joy Reid's accidental case for Republicanism — she described the GOP as wanting no income tax, no regulations, earning what you want, and families inheriting everything. We ask why that sounds like freedom and why the Democrat Party has become openly opposed to it. In this episode we talk to Eugene McCartan. Originally from Co. Down, Eugene has been an activist with the Communist Party of Ireland since joining in Dublin in 1974. He served as the party's Chairperson from 1989 to 2001 and then General Secretary until his retirement from that role in 2023. We discuss Eugene's background and joining the Communist Party of Ireland (CPI); the short-lived Left Alliance between the CPI, Workers' Party and Liaison Committee of the Labour Left around that time; the history of the Communist Party of Ireland and its development since the 1920s – through key periods of the conflict in the North, the tensions in organising North and South, the dissolution of the Soviet Union, and subsequent organising; the CPI's positions on Imperialism and Republicanism; and the contemporary international conflict and political position.

About the Lecture: This talk will address the Pugachev Rebellion (1773-1775) in the Russian Empire, the most massive popular uprising in eighteenth-century Europe which brought together Cossacks, Russian serfs, and Bashkir nomads (to name just the major groups) in a common uprising against the Russian Empire and its colonization of the steppe. Arguing against the common theory of “naïve monarchism”, the talk will aim to uncover the idioms of democratic empowerment and universal rights which so far have been hiding from scholars in the plain sight of the rebellion's massive published archive. These idioms could take two forms: a secular, juridical form, which combined official concepts of law with those of the unwritten common law in order to affirm democratic self-governance; and the form of a heretical political theology which questioned feudal social hierarchies, established forms of property over land, and the official absolutist vision of authority. About the speaker: Kirill Ospovat is an associate professor of Russian at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is the author of two books on eighteenth-century Russian culture and literature: "Pridvornaia slovesnost': institut literatury i konstruktsii absolutizma v Rossii serediny XVIII vekaPridvornaia slovesnost': institut literatury i konstruktsii absolutizma v Rossii serediny XVIII veka" [Courtly Letters: Russian Literature and Visions of Absolutism in the Mid-Eighteenth Century] (Moscow: Novoe literaturnoe obozrenie, 2020), and "Terror and Pity: Aleksandr Sumarokov and the Theater of Power in Elizabethan Russia" (Boston: Academic Studies Press, 2016). The Hunger Strikes had led to a surge in support for Republicanism and in October 1984, Margaret Thatcher herself, narrowly escaped death in the Brighton bombing. Her intelligence chiefs were clear; they weren't going to defeat the IRA by purely military and security means – she decided something had to be done. Meanwhile in Dublin, fears over the rise of Sinn Féin and frustration with a lack of progress in advancing nationalists' interests led to an openness to fresh ideas. The stage was set for secret talks which led to the Anglo-Irish Agreement, signed on the 15 November 1985. Ulster's Unionists were outraged by what they saw as a betrayal. As the people of the kingdom began to struggle against these ancient bonds, the unspeakable question was posed: could there be a Spain without the church? The 2025 Presidential inauguration of Donald Trump has been painted with the broad brush of hero, the return of the king, and the start of a golden age in America. But the whole thing is marred with caesar-augustus worship, executive orders, and pardons from the previous administration. Biden pardoned people for unspecified crimes and Trump wants to investigate Biden's executive orders while issuing a slew of his own during his first day in office. Meanwhile, the sheer cost of an inauguration for any party leader reaches into the quarter-billion dollar territory. [SEGMENT 2-1] From Ruin to Renewal 1 Where are the Trump naysayers? I know many still exist, though most have been silenced. This includes RINOs who aided Democrats in plotting the demise of Trump and MAGA. I spoke of the NeverTrumpers recently. They now want back on the wagon, as they continue to plot against President Trump and his agenda. Still, many of them have been silenced, as they watch the difference between competence and failure. Look at what the Left have learned about Biden over the past year. And what of all the reveals to come? How could you possibly have supported this idiot and his agenda. While many on the Left continue with their muscle-memory to oppose Trump, they now catch themselves, course-correct, and rethink their knee-jerk lunacy. Take for example all the outspoken entertainers and Hollyweirdos. For the most part, they have kept a sock in their pie holes as it relates to Trump. It's difficult to criticize the man when you have Biden to whom you can compare him. Also, we know that most of these Tinseltown twits virtual-signal publicly while privately supporting Trump's policies. Even they look at the hard-core idiots like DeNiro and Stephen King as too far gone. Many of these pansy-asses exist, awaiting the moment they can proclaim that they never supported Biden, Kamala, or the Democrats. Trump will be the new fashion for 2025, as the closet-MAGA fakes simmer. As soon as Trump does something “Trumpian”, they will pretend they've been down with Trump since circa 2016. “We had his back!” And Trump will have many opportunities. He could end Biden's proxy war with Russia. He's already making moves on the Chinese with trade and the Panama Canal. And on the horizon, a brighter future glimmers, with opportunities to rebuild on the foundation of accountability and common sense. Leaving the Past in the Dust  [SEGMENT 2-3] From Ruin to Renewal 3   Barack Obama's legacy is finally unraveling. Once hailed as a transformative figure, his impact now reveals cracks in the facade. From economic stagnation to divisive rhetoric, Obama's tenure ultimately set the stage for his handpicked successor, Joe Biden, who amplified the damage. Biden's presidency—a product of the political maneuvering orchestrated by Obama—exemplifies the erosion of American leadership. Together, they'll be remembered as the "Dynamic Duo Dingbats," emblematic of what went wrong. The Clintons, too, have been relegated to history's dustbin. Their attempt to align their name with families like the Rockefellers or the Kennedys faltered under the weight of corruption and scandal. Hillary's loss to Trump was the final nail in the coffin for Clintonism, a political dynasty undone by its hubris. Gone, too, is the outdated notion that Trump can't lead Republicans to victory. The old-guard Republicanism—rooted in compromise and tepid policy—has been supplanted by a new era of bold, unapologetic conservatism. MAGA has meaning, and unlike the Tea Party movement, MAGA has staying power. Americans have also turned their backs on the once-trustworthy media, preferring MAGA influencers for their truth. Years of lies and selective reporting have shattered any credibility these institutions once held. Few people believe the NY Times, WaPo, CNN, and the like. The numbers prove it and Van Jones said it recently [X] SB – Van Jones on media     "Belief in the science," as weaponized by Leftists, has similarly crumbled. From gender ideology to the mishandling of COVID-19, the so-called experts—whether in the FDA, NIH, or DOJ—have proven untrustworthy. Their failures are etched into the collective memory of a populace betrayed by those they were told to trust. Likewise, Leftist platitudes such as "saving democracy" and "for the greater good" have lost all meaning, exposed as cynical tools to silence dissent.     Perhaps most importantly, the tide is turning against the Left's normalization of the sexualization of children and the creeping acceptance of pedophilia. Criminals in government and culture will find their time is up as the public demands accountability. Lessons We Must Remember Julian Assange's plight stands as a stark reminder of what happens to those who challenge the status quo. His detention stifled stories that could have unveiled further corruption, particularly surrounding the Biden family. Similarly, the Left's denial of Biden's incompetence and corruption remains a damning testament to media complicity. How is it that the Bidens managed to dodge scrutiny while seemingly laundering half of Beijing's treasury? The Biden crime family's antics could fill a Netflix series—and probably should. As you consider what Assange might have accomplished if not tethered to the Ecuadorian embassy, remember all that our media didn't do. Meanwhile, the DOJ's relentless targeting of Trump, aided by state-level cronies in New York and Georgia, underscores the weaponization of the justice system. Their lawfare campaign has been nothing short of historic—an epic quest to find something, anything, to pin on Trump. Yet every grand charge against him has collapsed like a Jenga tower at a kid's birthday party. It's almost comical to watch prosecutors argue, “This time, we've got him!” only for Trump to moonwalk out of the courtroom. And then there's Trump himself, the ultimate troll. Who else could turn working at McDonald's into a political flex? While Leftists mocked him flipping burgers, Trump spun it as a symbol of his connection to the average American. Let's not forget his sanitation stint—cleaning up the political trash Leftists left behind—a metaphor so on point it deserves an Emmy. Every one of Trump's antics serves a purpose: to troll, to entertain, and most importantly, to expose the absurdity of his detractors. Speaking of absurdity, remember when Ketanji Brown Jackson couldn't define a woman during her confirmation hearings? That moment alone should be preserved in the Smithsonian as a cultural artifact of wokeism's peak. Meanwhile, Biden's record-setting pardons—37 criminals off death row and counting—have set a new standard for tone-deaf governance. By the time he's done, Biden's pardon list might include the guy who stole your lunch at work. And let's not forget Hollywood's Diddy scandal and the still-unreleased Epstein list. These dark secrets promise to unravel networks of power and corruption, implicating everyone from studio execs to politicians. Tonight on The Last Word: Democrats seek to put the Supreme Court on the ballot in November. Also, Donald Trump maintains his grip on the GOP despite recent incoherent campaign speeches. Today, I continue to make the case for why Speaker Johnson needs to be removed and why Trump must be forced to drop his support for him. Johnson placed a dumb hate crimes bill on the floor yesterday, which has forced conservatives into a false choice. I warn how Johnson's brand of Republicanism is actually fueling more anti-Semitism on the reactionary Right by stupidly making support for Israel about money and hate crimes legislation rather than about ending Islamic immigration and foreign funding of universities. That would synergize pro-Israel and pro-Jewish initiatives with America first.
